Participation in the learning disability school : ten pupils and four special education teachers´ thoughts and working methods on participation (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

During our studies, to special education teacher, deeper understanding has incurred about the importance of the pupils´ participation, for their learning outcome. But what is the definition of participation and what does it look like for pupils with learning disability school? The purpose of the study is to investigate perceived participation of a group of pupils in special school for pupils with severe learning difficult in their education. The study intends to show how a group special education teacher work with the pupils’ participation. The participation concept is complex and can be defined in different ways. We have chosen to base the concept of participationon SPSM’s participation model, based on Janson´s study, that contain the following six aspects; availability, accessibility, coordinated actions, acknowledgement, engagement and autonomy. The study is based on qualitative semi structured interviews consisting of ten pupils in the school year 7-9 in the learning disability school and four special education teachers active in the learning disability school. The reliability of the study has been verified using the criteria; credibility, transferability, reliability and the possibility to strengthen and confirm the results. The research ethnics of The Swedish Research Council have been followed continuously. The result and conclusion of the study shows that the pupils experience their participation as relatively good, with only a few areas that may be improved. The special needs education teachers for instance work with the pupils participation by having a clear structure and purpose, vary their teaching, using AKK and other learning tools, enrich several senses, make use of the pupils interests, create a we-feeling, decide pair- and group division and different ways of repeatation. The areas that may be improved are mainly the participation aspects; autonomy, coordinated actions, acknowledgement and engagement. To offset further research a more extensive study with more pupils and special education teachers would be of interest, but also to perform the same study with pupil assistants, guardians and principals.
