Munhygien- och kostvanor hos gymnasieelever2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The effect of a decontamination protocol on contaminated titanium dental implant surfaces with different surface topography in edentulous patients.2018In: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6357, E-ISSN 1502-3850Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVES: To investigate if it is possible to achieve complete decontamination of dental implant surfaces with different surface characteristics.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve implant pieces with an Osseotite® surface and 12 implant pieces with a Ti-Unite® surface were attached on to the complete lower dentures of six patients and were allowed to accumulate plaque for 30 days. When retrieved, the implant decontamination protocol used, involved both mechanical (PeriBrush™) and chemical (3% H2O2) decontamination. The number of colony forming units per millilitre was determined and the dominant micro-organisms in selected samples was identified by 16s rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The effect of the titanium brush on the implant surface was examined by SEM.

RESULTS: Complete decontamination was achieved in five out of 24 implants (four Osseotite® and one Ti-Unite®). The mean CFU/ml detected after decontamination were 464.48 for Osseotite® and 729.09 for Ti-Unite® implants. On the surface of the implants in which complete decontamination was not achieved, all of the predominant bacteria identified were streptococci except for one which was identified as micrococcus. SEM images revealed that the surface features of the decontaminated implants were not significantly altered.

CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical decontamination using a titanium brush supplemented with chemical treatment for one minute (3% H2O2) can achieve complete decontamination of implant surfaces in edentulous patients.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual parents' experiences of nurses' attitudes in child health care: a qualitative study2017In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 26, no 23-24, p. 5065-5071Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe lesbian, gay and bisexual parents' experiences of nurses' attitudes in child health care.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are often reluctant to disclose their gender identity for fear of discrimination. This fear may lead to avoidance of healthcare for themselves or their children and may negatively affect families' health and well-being.

DESIGN: A qualitative inductive design was employed.

METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 lesbian, gay or bisexual parents (11 mothers and 3 fathers) with child health care experiences in southern Sweden. Interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis.

RESULTS: Two themes were identified. One, a 'sense of marginalization', included lesbian, gay and bisexual parents' experiences of heteronormative attitudes among child health care nurses which led them to feel alienated and questioned as parents. Another, 'being respected for who you are', included experiences of being respected and included at child health care appointments.

CONCLUSIONS: Findings paint a complex picture of lesbian, gay and bisexual parents' interactions with child health care nurses in that they experienced both positive and negative attitudes. Knowledge gaps about lesbian, gay and bisexual families within the child health care field must be filled.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Child health care nurses should work with the entire family to provide the best care for the child; however, discrimination in health care is common and often caused by a lack of knowledge. The number of children living with same-sex parents has increased more than ten-fold since the end of the 1990s. It is therefore important to explore lesbian, gay and bisexual parents' experiences with child health care nurses' attitudes to improve quality of care.

    Abstract [sv]

Emotionellt stöd inom palliativ slutenvård: närståendes erfarenheter2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cyberbullying and traditional bullying among Nordic adolescents and their impact on life satisfaction2019In: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1403-4948, E-ISSN 1651-1905Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of cybervictimization in the six Nordic countries and to assess its overlap with traditional bullying. A further aim was to examine potential associations between life satisfaction, on the one hand, and traditional bullying and cyberbullying on the other.

METHODS: Analyses were based on data from the 2013⁄2014 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. It included 32,210 boys and girls, aged 11, 13, and 15, living in the six Nordic countries.

RESULTS: The prevalence of cyberbullying by both pictures and by messages was around 2% in all the Nordic countries except Greenland. There it was considerably higher. The prevalence of being bullied in a traditional manner varied widely by country. For boys, this type of bullying was most frequent in the youngest age group and then decreased steadily in the older age groups. Girls were on average more likely to be cyberbullied. Cyberbullying was more common among 13- and 15-year-olds than 11-year-olds. Higher family affluence was unrelated to the risk of cyberbullying. However, it was related to traditional bullying and combined forms of bullying. Compared with intact families, cybervictimization was commoner among single-parent families and stepfamilies. Adjusting for age, gender, family affluence, and family structure, those subjected to cyberbullying had lower life satisfaction than those who were not bullied.

CONCLUSIONS: We found relatively little overlap between cyberbullying and traditional bullying, indicating that the two may be separate phenomena stemming from different mechanisms, at least in the Nordic context.

“En ytlig bransch”: en kvalitativ studie om upplevd hälsa och kroppsuppfattning bland träningsinstruktörer som arbetar på gym2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: A poor body perception can affect well being in a negative way and lead to detrimental results for both physical and mental health. Previous research about the phenomenon body perception is limited, especially work related, which makes it harder to understand how work can affect body perception. Purpose: To study body perception and the existence of well being amongst training instructors working at the gym. The objective is to increase the understanding of potential factors that may affect body perception and well being. Method: The study was implemented by using a qualitative methodology in the form of individual semi-structured interviews with a total of ten participants. Results: In summary the result shows that most of the participants experienced both negative and positive thoughts about their own body, although the positive thoughts were more common. A well conditioned body was considered a valuable asset in attracting clients since this was preferred. Some of the participants also competed in bodybuilding; however, this tended to have a negative impact on their well being. In a social setting there is a greater expectation about a women’s appearance than it is for men. The participants view on health can be summarized as a holistic approach where several components contributed. Conclusion: Due to the existence of limited research, there is a need for further studies about body perception from a qualitative and quantitative point of view to give a better picture of possible additional factors that affect it.

Behandlingsmetoder för dental erosion: En kvantitativ litteraturstudie2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Linking youths' mental, psychosocial, and emotional functioning to ICF-CY: lessons learned2017In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 40, no 19, p. 2293-2299Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

PURPOSE: Linking ready-made questionnaires to codes within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version with the intention of using the information statistically for studying mental health problems can pose several challenges. Many of the constructs measured are latent, and therefore, difficult to describe in single codes. The aim of this study was to describe and discuss challenges encountered in this coding process.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire from a Swedish research programme was linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version and the agreement was assessed.

RESULTS: Including the original aim of the questionnaire into the coding process was found to be very important for managing the coding of the latent constructs of the items. Items from the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version chapters with narrow definitions for example mental functions, were more easily translated to meaningful concepts to code, while broadly defined chapters, such as interactions and relationships, were more difficult.

CONCLUSION: This study stresses the importance of a clear, predefined coding scheme as well as the importance of not relying too heavily on common linking rules, especially in cases when it is not possible to use multiple codes for a single item. Implications for rehabilitation The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version, is a useful tool for merging assessment data from several sources when documenting adolescents' mental functioning in different life domains. Measures of mental health are often based on latent constructs, often revealed in the description of the rationale/aim of a measure. The latent construct should be the primary focus in linking information. By mapping latent constructs to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version, users of the classification can capture a broad range of areas relevant to everyday functioning in adolescents with mental health problems. The subjective experience of participation, i.e., the level of subjective involvement, is not possible to code into the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version. However, when linking mental health constructs to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version codes, the two dimensions of participation (the being there, and the level of involvement) need to be separated in the linking process. This can be performed by assigning codes focusing on being there as separate from items focusing on the subjective experience of involvement while being there.

Kost och munhygienvanor hos skiftarbetare2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Det insamlade materialet analyserades i statistikprogrammet Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0.

    Measuring person-centred care in nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics2018In: Musculoskeletal Care, ISSN 1478-2189, E-ISSN 1557-0681, Vol. 16, no 2, p. 296-304Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Measurement of person-centred care (PCC) outcomes is underdeveloped owing to the complexity of the concept and lack of conceptual clarity. A framework conceptualizing outpatient PCC in rheumatology nurse-led clinics has therefore been suggested and operationalized into the PCC instrument for outpatient care in rheumatology (PCCoc/rheum).

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to test the extent to which the PCCoc/rheum represents the underpinning conceptual outpatient PCC framework, and to assess its measurement properties as applied in nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics.

METHODS: The 24-item PCCoc/rheum was administered to 343 persons with rheumatoid arthritis from six nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics. Its measurement properties were tested by Rasch measurement theory.

RESULTS: Ninety-two per cent of individuals (n = 316) answered the PCCoc/rheum. Items successfully operationalized a quantitative continuum from lower to higher degrees of perceived PCC. Model fit was generally good, including lack of differential item functioning (DIF), and the PCCoc/rheum was able to separate individuals with a reliability of 0.88. The four response categories worked as intended, with the exception of one item. Item ordering provided general empirical support of a priori expectations, with the exception of three items that were omitted owing to multidimensionality, dysfunctional response categories and unexpected ordering. The 21-item PCCoc/rheum showed good accordance with the conceptual framework, improved fit, functioning response categories and no DIF, and its reliability was 0.86.

CONCLUSION: We found general support for the appropriateness of the PCCoc/rheum as an outcome measure of patient-perceived PCC in nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics. While in need of further testing, the 21-item PCCoc/rheum has the potential to evaluate outpatient PCC from a patient perspective.

Person-centred care in nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics: conceptualization and initial development of a measurement instrument2018In: Musculoskeletal Care, ISSN 1478-2189, E-ISSN 1557-0681, Vol. 16, no 2, p. 287-295Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Person-centred care (PCC) is considered a key component of effective illness management and high-quality care. However, the PCC concept is underdeveloped in outpatient care. In rheumatology, PCC is considered an unmet need and its further development and evaluation is of high priority. The aim of the present study was to conceptualize and operationalize PCC, in order to develop an instrument for measuring patient-perceived PCC in nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics.

METHODS: A conceptual outpatient PCC framework was developed, based on the experiences of people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), person-centredness principles and existing PCC frameworks. The resulting framework was operationalized into the PCC instrument for outpatient care in rheumatology (PCCoc/rheum), which was tested for acceptability and content validity among 50 individuals with RA attending a nurse-led outpatient clinic.

RESULTS: The conceptual framework focuses on the meeting between the person with RA and the nurse, and comprises five interrelated domains: social environment, personalization, shared decision-making, empowerment and communication. Operationalization of the domains into a pool of items generated a preliminary PCCoc/rheum version, which was completed in a mean (standard deviation) of 5.3 (2.5) min. Respondents found items easy to understand (77%) and relevant (93%). The Content Validity Index of the PCCoc/rheum was 0.94 (item level range, 0.87-1.0). About 80% of respondents considered some items redundant. Based on these results, the PCCoc/rheum was revised into a 24-item questionnaire.

CONCLUSIONS: A conceptual outpatient PCC framework and a 24-item questionnaire intended to measure PCC in nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics were developed. The extent to which the questionnaire represents a measurement instrument remains to be tested.

Measuring person-centered care in nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics2018In: International Conference on Probabilistic Models for Measurement, 2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Person-centered care (PCC) is a key component to effective illness management and high-quality care but conceptually underdeveloped in outpatient care settings for long-term disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and there is a lack of instruments measuring patient perceived PCC.

AIM: To conceptualize and operationalize outpatient PCC as a basis for measuring patient-perceived PCC in nurse-led outpatient rheumatology clinics.

DESIGN: A conceptual outpatient PCC framework was developed based on theory and patient experiences. The resulting framework was operationalizedinto items that were tested regarding their accordancewith the theoretical framework and their measurement properties according to Rasch measurement theory (RMT) using the RUMM2030 software.

RESULTS: The conceptual framework comprised five intermingled domains (personalization, shared decision-making, empowerment, communication, and social environment) that were operationalized into a 24-item PCC instrument for outpatient care in rheumatology (PCCoc/rheum). RMT analyses found items to successfully map out a quantitative continuum from lower to higher PCC levels, with generally acceptable model fit and a reliability of 0.88. Three items exhibiting multidimensionality, dysfunctional response categories, and/or unexpected hierarchical ordering were omitted. The revised PCCoc/rheum showed good accordance with the conceptual framework, improved fit, functioning response categories, and no DIF; reliability was 0.86.

SUMMARY AND IMPLICATIONS: We found support for the PCCoc/rheum as a conceptually based outcome measure of patient perceived PCC. Results implied minor theoretical reconsiderations, and related scale revisions improved theoretical and clinical clarity. While in need of further testing, the PCCoc/rheum has great potential as a measure of outpatient PCC from a patient perspective.

Kroppbildsuppfattning och användning av sociala medier bland ungdomar.: En kvantitativ undersökning ur ett salutogent perspektiv.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study's introduction is given as an overall picture of the fact that Swedish youth generally estimate their health as high but the psychosocial health is estimated to be lower, which includes being satisfied with themselves. Being content with yourself and your body is covered by the body image perception. Social media takes more time and it's used to a greater extent as a communication medium. Living habits, the environment and the conditions of early life have a bearing on the individual's health. The aim of this study was to investigate the body image of young people and the use of social media and to investigate the relationship between them. Method: A quantitative cross-sectional study was performed. The survey was used as a data collection method among Scanian students in grades 1-3 in high school, where 249 students answered questionnaires. The result showed that 33 percent of girls had a higher body image than boys (14 percent) and that 38 percent of boys had a lower body image than girls (18 percent) (p = 0.001). The way girls and boys used social media differs. Girls use social media to a greater extent than boys. The way girls and boys used social media differed. Girls had more different roles on social media than boys, and boys played more online games than girls. Conclusion: Since the boys in this study had lower body image perception and played more online games than girls, it is appropriate from a gender and gender perspective to study boys' body image perception in relation to online gaming. Therefore, further research with a focus on boys' body image should be conducted on the basis of both a qualitative and quantitative method aspect, with the aim of trying to understand which factors underlie their body image perception.

Upholding an ideal image of palliative work in the face of obstacles2018In: International Journal of Palliative Nursing, ISSN 1357-6321, E-ISSN 2052-286X, Vol. 24, no 12, p. 611-617Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: Homecare workers play a pivotal role in palliative care, but research on their experiences is limited. The aim of this study was to describe how homecare workers in Sweden experience their work in palliative homecare.

METHOD:This qualitative study used open-ended interviews with a purposive sample of 15 homecare workers. The data was analysed by means of qualitative content analysis.

RESULTS: One main theme emerged from the analysis: upholding an ideal image of palliative work. This had four subthemes: doing good; doing their best work; feeling work satisfaction; and facing difficulties.

CONCLUSION: Palliative care performed by homecare workers is demanding. Homecare workers need more practical support and would benefit from a care model that involves working with registered nurses, as a team, to provide humanistic care to dying patients and their relatives.

Sjuksköterskors upplevelse av att möta patienter med ett aktivt självskadebeteende: En litteraturstudie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sökningarna gjordes i tre olika databaser.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Previous research has shown that body image can have an impact on wellbeing. A negative body image can increase psychological suffering and have physical implications on health. A positive body image can provide protection against external factors that could lead to a negative body image. Aim: The aim of the study is to explore high school students body image and which situations and environments that has an impact on their body image. Method: The study was conducted through a qualitative method with semi structured interviews, the high school students was in the age range of 15-18. The data was gathered without any pre decided codes for analyzing. Result: The study showed that body image was not static within the high school students, body image could change from day to day and from situation, often depending on the mood. Negative body image could have effect on wellbeing overall, like thinking less of themselves, and also limit the high school students in their everyday life. Most high school students felt strongly that the body is something that you can control, with the right amount of motivation, physical activity and limited food intake, everybody could achieve their dream body. Social media had a negative impact on many of the high school students but could, for some work as a way of controlling what images they meet by unfollowing accounts that made them feel bad about themselves. Conclusion: The result of this study shows that body image can be fluid and strongly affected on the situation. Further research, focusing on what influences body image in this specific target group, could have a great impact on future interventions to improve body image.

Peri-implant diseases and conditions: consensus report of workgroup 4 of the 2017 world workshop on the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions2018In: Journal of Clinical Periodontology, ISSN 0303-6979, E-ISSN 1600-051X, Vol. 45, no S20, p. 286-291Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A classification for peri-implant diseases and conditions was presented. Focused questions on the characteristics of peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, peri-implantitis, and soft- and hard-tissue deficiencies were addressed. Peri-implant health is characterized by the absence of erythema, bleeding on probing, swelling, and suppuration. It is not possible to define a range of probing depths compatible with health; Peri-implant health can exist around implants with reduced bone support. The main clinical characteristic of peri-implant mucositis is bleeding on gentle probing. Erythema, swelling, and/or suppuration may also be present. An increase in probing depth is often observed in the presence of peri-implant mucositis due to swelling or decrease in probing resistance. There is strong evidence from animal and human experimental studies that plaque is the etiological factor for peri-implant mucositis. Peri-implantitis is a plaque-associated pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, characterized by inflammation in the peri-implant mucosa and subsequent progressive loss of supporting bone. Peri-implantitis sites exhibit clinical signs of inflammation, bleeding on probing, and/or suppuration, increased probing depths and/or recession of the mucosal margin in addition to radiographic bone loss. The evidence is equivocal regarding the effect of keratinized mucosa on the long-term health of the peri-implant tissue. It appears, however, that keratinized mucosa may have advantages regarding patient comfort and ease of plaque removal. Case definitions in day-to-day clinical practice and in epidemiological or disease-surveillance studies for peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis were introduced. The proposed case definitions should be viewed within the context that there is no generic implant and that there are numerous implant designs with different surface characteristics, surgical and loading protocols. It is recommended that the clinician obtain baseline radiographic and probing measurements following the completion of the implant-supported prosthesis.

Measuring self-efficacy, aptitude to participate and functioning in students with and without impairments2018In: European Journal of Special Needs Education, ISSN 0885-6257, E-ISSN 1469-591X, Vol. 33, no 4, p. 572-583Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Including vulnerable groups of students such as students with learning disabilities in mainstream school research, require ethical considerations and questionnaire adaptation. These students are often excluded, due to low understanding or methodologies generating inadequate data. Students with disability need be studied as a separate group and provided accessible questionnaires. This pilot study aims at developing and evaluating student self-reported measures, rating aspects of student experiences of school-based Physical Education (PE). Instrument design, reliability and validity were examined in Swedish secondary school students (n = 47) including students, aged 13, with intellectual disability (n = 5) and without impairment and test–retested on 28 of these students. Psychometric results from the small pilot-study sample were confirmed in analyses based on replies from the first wave of data collection in the main study (n = 450). Results show adequate internal consistency, factor structure and relations between measures. In conclusion, reliability and validity were satisfactory in scales to measure self-efficacy in general, in PE, and aptitude to participate. Adapting proxy ratings for functioning into self-reports indicated problems. Adequacy of adjustments made were confirmed and a dichotomous scale for typical/atypical function is suggested for further analyses.

An explorative study comparing the knowledge of tobacco use and tobacco cessation program among school going boys and girls: A study in Ahmedabad district in Western India2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Tobacco use is high in India. Previous studies have shown that awareness of health risks of tobacco use, and adolescents’ behavior are strongly associated with adolescents’ knowledge and perceptions towards tobacco use. There are only a few studies being conducted that assess school going boys’ and girls’ tobacco-related health knowledge, and their awareness related to tobacco control programmes. A questioner base cross-sectional study with 276 students had been conducted from four different schools (2 private and 2 government) in Ahmedabad district, Gujarat state, India. The results include from the group comparison (hypothesis testing) between the boys and girls. More than two thirds of boys’ and girls’ participants agreed tobacco use (also in all forms) is harmful to the body including the transitory use of the tobacco and its products. More than one third boys and one quarter girls believed that media plays an important role in promoting anti-tobacco messages. Around 50 % of the girls preferred strict anti-tobacco laws and policies in curbing the tobacco pandemic.  More than two thirds of the boys and girls in the study sample had no knowledge of any organizations or programs that assisted individuals to get rid of the tobacco habit. This study gives an overview of the knowledge regarding the tobacco use among the young school going boys and girls. Promoting school and community-based intervention programs and reviewing of the existing anti-tobacco policies could prove to be beneficial in curbing the tobacco consumption habit in adolescents.

    Abstract:

Introduction: Dermatoglyphics is the study of finger prints from toes, fingers palms, and soles of animals and humans. Dermatoglyphic examination is opening up as an exceptionally tool for initial investigations into circumstances with an alleged genetic basis. The current study was conducted to determine worthiness of dermatoglyphics in prophesying genetic vulnerability of children to dental caries via cost-effective means.

Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study was undertaken on 100 children of age group between 4–14 years divided equally into two groups namely: Caries-free group (def/DMF score “0”) and Caries group (def/DMF score more than or equal to “5”). Both were subdivided into 25 males and 25 females. Each child’s handprints were taken and observed for dermatoglyphic pattern; total finger ridge count TFRc and atd angle.

Results: Whorls were found more in caries group whereas ulnar loops were more common in caries free group. Total finger ridge count was significantly higher in caries group. The atd angles did not show any significant differences among caries and caries free group.

Conclusion: Dermatoglyphic pattern variation may be an impor-tant tool in identification of people at risk of developing dental caries, which will enable an early detection and prevention of the disease.

När sjukdomen skiljer oss åt: en litteraturstudie om närståendes upplevelser när partner med demenssjukdom flyttar till boende2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Livet efter Sepsis: En litteraturöversikt2019Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The relationship between reported pain and depressive symptoms among adolescents2018In: Journal of School Nursing, ISSN 1059-8405, E-ISSN 1546-8364Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Pain and depressive symptoms are common reasons for adolescents to contact the school nurse. The aim was to describe the prevalence of pain (headache, abdominal pain, and back pain) and depressive symptoms among adolescents and to examine whether there is an association between pain and depressive symptoms. This cross-sectional survey included students ( N = 639) in Sweden (median age: 16 years). Over half of the female participants (56%) and one third of male participants (33%) had weekly headaches, abdominal pain, or back pain. Almost every second girl (48%) and one in four boys (25%) had depressive symptoms (as measured by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, scores ≥ 16). There was a significant association between having pain (headache, abdominal pain, or back pain) and having depressive symptoms. It is of great importance for school nurses to adequately identify and treat the cause of pain and other factors contributing to depression.

Resources needed: professionals about appearance issues in nursing situations2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Dissatisfaction with appearance is a common phenomenon, more frequent among women than men (Frisén & Holmqvist 2010, Neighbors & Sobal 2007) but so common that it can be considered a norm (Tantleff-Dunn, Barnes & Larose 2011). Health professionals are therefore in contact with the phenomenon on a regular basis in different health settings. Previous research have shown that health professionals experience time constraints and lack of confidence in relation to patients’ appearance issues (Persson et al 2009; Konradsen et al 2009). Little is however known about the resources needed from the professionals’ point of view. The aim of the study was therefore to explore the phenomenon from a nursing perspective in general and with particular emphasis on resources needed.

    Methods

Five semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 24 health professionals in total (19 women and 5 men). Their age varied from approximately 20 to 45 years, with adherent variation in professional experience from a variety of health settings. The interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed through thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The study was done in accordance with the Swedish Law of Research Ethics, SFS 2003:460.

    Findings

The analysis resulted in the two themes knowledge development and operative support, representing different resources needed according to the respondents. The respondents own knowledge and professional competence was constantly referred to as the most important resource. The findings showed the importance of appearance being included in their education, the need for a continuous process of reflection and learning on an individual level but also on group level in terms of collegial learning. In order for the knowledge and competence to be put into practice there was also need for operative support. Sufficient time for communicating with the patients and the need for appropriate technical support in some nursing situations were emphasized by the participants.

    Discussion

The findings clearly shows the central role that health professionals have in relation to patients’ appearance issues and their need for resources. The findings adds to existing body of knowledge and can be used as a framework for health promotion strategies in health settings, with regards to patients’ appearance issues and distress. More research as well as action is needed from a nursing as well as public health perspective.

Att operera bort livmodern i fertil ålder: en litteraturstudie om kvinnors erfarenheter2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A national Swedish self- management program for people with Parkinson’s disease: patients and relatives view2017In: Movement Disorders, 2017, Vol. 32, p. 175-176Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To identify and describe experiences that people with PD and their relatives after participation inthe self-management intervention NPS (National Parkinson School) find valuable for managing daily life.

Background: A self-management program called NPS was developed as a collaboration of healthcare providers, researchers and patient organizations. NPS is aiming to provide tools and strategies for people with PD and their relatives to increase ability to manage symptoms and consequences of disease and thereby improving conditions for a good life. Self-monitoring and self-management are central concepts. NPS focuses on life with PD, which via 7 sessions consisting of education/lectures and group discussions are mediated. Home assignments make participants practice the new skills in their own life.

Methods: The last session, evaluation of the NPS, was audio recorded in its whole and transcribed verbatim. Data was collected from five separate clinics and analysed both inductively and deductively using Thematic Analysis and by applying the Self-and Family management theory.

Results: Through inductive analysis three themes; Exchanging experiences and feeling support, Adjustment and acceptance of PD for managing daily life and Promoting life satisfaction, were identified and described. The themes are capturing the meaning, value and experience of being a participant of NPS. Deductive analysis indicated thatthe Self-and Family management theory was useful and valid for this group of patients and generated a modified framework applicable for patients with PD and their families [figure1].

Conclusions: Living with PD affects patients as well as relatives. Meeting others in the same situation gives support and strengthen their self- image. Having the opportunity sharing experiences and practical advices showed that there was a hopeful future to come. Techniques to accept and manage life with PD included seeking information about disease and treatments, self-monitoring in order to adjust to new situations and improve symptoms of disease and having a positive mind-set. Living an active life, participating in enjoyable social, cultural, and physical activities were important to feel happy and satisfied with life. Participation in NPS covered many areas of importance for the ability of self-management in PD. The framework for self-management in chronic disease was found relevant also for the PD population

Om trygghet och övervakningssystem: Enkätstudie om medborgares attityder till kamera- och IT-baserad övervakning2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

'I would never have done it if it hadn't been digital': a qualitative study on patients' experiences of a digital management programme for hip and knee osteoarthritis in Sweden.2019In: BMJ Open, ISSN 2044-6055, E-ISSN 2044-6055, Vol. 9, no 5Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the experiences of a digital management programme for hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA), including education and exercises as well as an option to chat with an assigned physical therapist for feedback, questions and support.

SETTING: This study was conducted at a regional hospital in the southern part of Sweden.

METHODS: Nineteen patients (10 women), median age of 66 (q1-q3, 57-71) years, with confirmed hip or knee OA were interviewed after completing their first 6 weeks in the programme, using a semistructured interview guide. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and were qualitatively analysed using systematic text condensation.

RESULTS: Three categories emerged during the interviews:(1) Management options for mitigating the consequences of OA; (2) Experiences of the digital programme and (3) Perceived effects of the digital programme over time. The participants had mostly positive experiences of the programme. Particularly important for these experiences were no waiting list, the flexibility of taking part in the programme with regards to location and time and the possibility to have daily contact with a physical therapist. These aspects were also emphasised as advantages compared with traditional care.

CONCLUSIONS: Digital management of OA, including education and exercise, was experienced as a valid alternative to traditional treatment in enabling the implementation of OA guidelines in a wider community. Easy access, exercising at one's own convenience, flexible options, daily follow-up and support by a physical therapist were mentioned as the most important features. In addition, the results will contribute to further development and improvement of digital OA management programmes.

"I was considering surgery because I believed that was how it was treated": a qualitative study on willingness for joint surgery after completion of a digital management program for osteoarthritis.2019In: Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, ISSN 1063-4584, E-ISSN 1522-9653, Vol. 27, no 7, p. 1026-1032Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: To explore, using a qualitative approach, reasons for patients' continued willingness or their shift in willingness for total joint replacement (TJR) surgery, following participation in Joint Academy, a Swedish, digital, non-surgical treatment program for osteoarthritis (OA).

DESIGN: Nineteen patients with hip or knee OA were interviewed after finishing their first six weeks in the treatment program, using a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using a systematic text condensation method.

RESULTS: Analysis of the interview data revealed three main categories of reasons provided for the participants' decisions regarding surgery: 1) Various reasons for participating in Joint Academy with three sub-categories: (a) longstanding pain affects daily life, (b) last chance for improvement and (c) mandatory treatment to be eligible for TJR; 2) Willingness for TJR following treatment, which included four sub-categories: (a) surgery - the last resort, (b) reduced pain and improved functioning, (c) no perceived improvements after treatment, and (d) trust in healthcare providers; and 3) Expectations of TJR. The shift in willingness towards or away from TJR was mainly due to the perceived success of Joint Academy in improving their functioning.

CONCLUSION: Several patients reconsidered their options and had changed their attitude to TJR after participation in a digital program aimed at reducing OA symptoms and improving functioning. These results highlight the importance of providing patients with adequate information about non-surgical management options to facilitate shared decision-making, and possibly reduce the need for surgery.

Prescribed physical activity maintenance following exercise based cardiac rehabilitation: factors predicting low physical activity2019In: European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, ISSN 1474-5151, E-ISSN 1873-1953, Vol. 18, no 1, p. 21-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is important to reduce mortality, morbidity and risk factors in patients with coronary heart disease. This report evaluates to what extent patients are still physically active following an exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programme 12-14 months post-myocardial infarction and factors predicting why not.

METHODS: Data from the National Quality Registry Swedeheart with post-myocardial infarction patients ( n=368) admitted from July 2012 to November 2014 were collected with outcomes of physical activity after 12-14 months. Baseline data included demographics, clinical variables, participation in exercise programmes, prescribed physical activity, health-related quality of life and self-reported health (EQ-5D-3L/EQ-VAS). A direct binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify indicators of low physical activity.

    RESULTS: Physical activity frequency per week (PA/week) was low, i.e. zero to three times, in older patients over 64 years ( P=0.00) and in those having problems with pain/discomfort (138 PA/week vs. 195) ( P=0.01), problems with mobility (60 PA/week vs.273) ( P=0.04) and anxiety/depression (128 PA/week vs. 205) ( P=0.04).

CONCLUSION: Indicators predicting low physical activity can be used targeting improved post-myocardial infarction care outlining person-centred rehabilitation programmes and specialist nursing-led programmes.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Regular physical activity is a resource for health and can reduce the risk of several conditions caused by ageing and physical inactivity. A large part of the seniors in the community do not live up to the daily physical activity directions. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate internal and external motivational forces regarding seniors ́, over 60 years of age, engagement in physical exercise from self-determination theory (SDT). Method: The study adopted a qualitative approach, including 11 individual semi structured interviews. The participants attended a group based physical exercise program once a week. Results: The result showed that seniors ́ motivation for physical exercise was a mix between both internal and external motivational forces. The internal motivation manifests as wellbeing, enjoyment and social inclusion. The external motivation includes the voilition to stay well, to retain the mobility and also the accessibility and costs regarding the physical activity. Conclusion: From a public health perspective the study can provide useful information when developing interventions promoting seniors ́ physical, pshycological and social health.

    Abstract [sv]

"Man ger mer än vad man tar": En kvalitativ intervjustudie om medberoende i nära relationer2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Previous studies have shown that in every drug addicted person’s life there is about five relatives which risks developing co-dependency. Therefore, the riskfactors affect the relative’s mental health and increase the risk of developing other illnesses such as depression, anxiety and emotional issues. The aim of the study was to investigate how co-dependency in close relationships can develop self-destructive behavior and mental illness. With the use of a qualitative method and interviews as a data collecting method, the aim for this study became fulfilled. The study was based on semi-structured interviews, performed by six participants. The results showed similar outcomes for all interviews, such as the prevalence for mental illness, self-destructive behaviour and the importance of introjective identification. These three categories complement each other in the order written. The results indicates that a co-dependent individual could not, without the phenomenon introjective identification and self-destructive behaviour acquire mental illness. However in order to acquire some kind of mental illness the co-dependent person would have to develop self-destructive behaviour, and the results showed that it is not possible without introjective identification in the context of a close relationship. Although, with the use of attachment theory and coping-strategy, the conclusion showed that not every co-dependent developed mental illness. The prevalence of illnesses was affected by the individuals early life attachment-pattern and coping skills. The study led to a conclusion that mental illness is a big issue among co-dependent individuals. Co-dependency is not a determined as a disease, despite the risk of possibly developing mental illness. It is still not a prioritization among public health authorities.

Exploring existential loneliness among frail older people as a basis for an intervention: protocol for the development phase of the LONE study2019In: JMIR Research Protocols, ISSN 1929-0748, E-ISSN 1929-0748, Vol. 8, no 8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: International research concerning end-of-life issues emphasizes the importance of health care professionals (HCPs) being prepared to deal with existential aspects, like loneliness, in order to provide adequate care. The last phase of life is often related to losses of different kinds, which might trigger feelings of isolation in general and existential loneliness (EL) in particular. There is a large body of research concerning loneliness among older people in general, but little is known about the phenomenon and concept of EL in old age.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the framing, design, and first results of the exploratory phase of an intervention study focusing on EL among older people: the LONE study. This stage of the study corresponds to the development phase, according to the Medical Research Council framework for designing complex interventions.

METHODS: The LONE study contains both theoretical and empirical studies concerning: (1) identifying the evidence base; (2) identifying and developing theory through individual and focus group interviews with frail older people, significant others, and HCPs; and (3) modeling process and outcomes for the intervention. This project involves sensitive issues that must be carefully reviewed. The topic in itself concerns a sensitive matter and the study group is vulnerable, therefore, an ethical consciousness will be applied throughout the project.

RESULTS: The results so far show that EL means being disconnected from life and implies a feeling of being fundamentally separated from others and the world, whether or not one has family, friends, or other close acquaintances. Although significant others highlighted things such as lack of activities, not participating in a social environment, and giving up on life as aspects of EL, the older people themselves highlighted a sense of meaningless waiting, a longing for a deeper connectedness, and restricted freedom as their origins of EL. The views of HCPs on the origin of EL, the place of care, and their own role differed between contexts.

CONCLUSIONS: The studies focusing on identifying the evidence base and developing theory are published. These results will now be used to identify potential intervention components, barriers, and enablers for the implementation of an intervention aimed at supporting HCPs in encountering EL among older people.

Inga beslut om dig utan dig: faktorer som påverkar patientens autonomi inom palliativ vård2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I Sverige behöver årligen 22000 patienter vårdas palliativt.
