Spouses' existential loneliness when caring for a frail partner late in life: a hermeneutical approach.2020In: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, ISSN 1748-2623, E-ISSN 1748-2631, Vol. 15, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Spouses are in a vulnerable situation when caring for a frail partner late in life. Exploring their existential loneliness can be a way to understand more about their existential needs.Method: A hermeneutic approach was used. Multistage focus group interviews were conducted with two groups consisting of five spouses, respectively, who met three times each. To work with the text, an approach was adapted where quotations are converted into poems in a linguistic manner. Results: Existential loneliness can be understood as the following: 1) being in a transition from us to merely me, 2) being forced to make decisions and feeling excluded, 3) navigating in an unfamiliar situation and questioning oneself, and 4) longing for togetherness but lacking the energy to encounter other people. The main interpretation is that existential loneliness emerges when one is in moments of inner struggle, when one is forced to make impossible choices, when one is approaching and is in limit situations, and when one is experiencing the endless loss of the other. Conclusion: For health care professionals to achieve a holistic picture, person-centeredness can be a way to make the spouses' existential needs visible and to provide support based on their needs.

”How do you say that in Swedish?”: en litteraturstudie om patienters upplevelser av att kommunicera med hjälp av tolk2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Exploring health professionals´ experiences of being involved in a research project2020In: Knowledge Management Research & Practice, ISSN 1477-8238, E-ISSN 1477-8246Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The involvement of health professionals in research may ensure the acquisition of relevant and sustainable knowledge that is applicable in practice. However, knowledge is lacking about how professionals experience being involved. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how health professionals experienced the process of being involved in a project related to research on ageing and health. Data was collected through seventeen interviews and analysed using a grounded theory approach. The findings illustrate the health professionals’ experiences of an adaptation process that occurred, e.g., adapting practice and research to facilitate collaboration and the ability to co-create. Influenced by circumstances and through ongoing negotiations and breakthroughs, co-creation was experienced, based on the health professionals’ and researchers’ trustful relationships. In conclusion, this new knowledge may be useful in designing and implementing future studies that involve health professionals in research projects on ageing and health.

Involvement of professionals in research: knowledge integration, development of practice, and challenges: a group concept mapping study2021In: Health Research Policy and Systems, ISSN 1478-4505, E-ISSN 1478-4505, Vol. 19, no 1, p. 1-17, article id 115Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Research and practice are often considered as two different worlds with different values, which causes a gap between them. Involving professionals such as practitioners, managers, decision-makers, and policy-makers in research on ageing and health might address the gap between research and practice, strengthen the healthcare system, and increase older people's possibilities for healthy ageing. The aim of this study was to conceptualize professionals' involvement in research on ageing and health from the perspective of the professionals themselves.

METHODS: A mixed method called group concept mapping was used. Professionals with experience being involved in research on ageing and health participated in qualitative data collection through brainstorming sessions (n = 29) and by sorting statements (n = 29). Afterwards, they participated in a quantitative data collection by rating statements according to how much each statement strengthened practice (n = 30) and strengthened research (n = 28). Multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis were used to conduct quantitative analysis. Latent qualitative analysis was also conducted.

RESULTS: Analysis resulted in eight clusters which illustrated conceptual areas of professionals' involvement in research projects. The qualitative latent construct of the cluster map resulted in the themes: challenges for professionals; prerequisites and professionals' learning can contribute to development of practice; and integrated knowledge benefits older people. There was a strong correlation between what strengthens practice and research (r = 0.92).

CONCLUSIONS: This study illustrates conceptual areas of professionals' own perspectives on what their involvement in research can lead to. Their involvement may lead to knowledge being integrated, and the professionals may learn through their involvement, which can contribute to the development of practice. However, there can also be challenges that need to be handled when professionals are involved in research. The study can be useful for improving the understanding of and actual involvement of professionals in research, and for optimizing the involvement of professionals.

Conceptualizing researchers' perspectives on involving professionals in research: a group concept mapping study2021In: Health Research Policy and Systems, ISSN 1478-4505, E-ISSN 1478-4505, Vol. 19, no 1, p. 1-17, article id 39Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Researchers have shown an increased interest in involving professionals from outside academia in research projects. Professionals are often involved in research on ageing and health when the purpose is to address the gap between research and practice. However, there is a need to acquire more knowledge about what the involvement might lead to by exploring researchers' experiences of involving professionals in research on ageing and health and developing conceptual areas. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify conceptual areas of professionals' involvement in research on ageing and health, from the perspective of researchers themselves.

METHODS: Group concept mapping, a participatory and mixed method, was used to conceptualize areas. Researchers with experience of involving professionals in research projects on ageing and health participated in qualitative data collection through brainstorming sessions (n = 26), and by sorting statements (n = 27). They then took part in quantitative data collection, where they rated statements according to how much a statement strengthened research (n = 26) and strengthened practice (n = 24). Data were analysed using multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. In addition, a qualitative analysis of the latent meaning of the cluster map was conducted.

RESULTS: Analysis of the sorting stage generated five clusters illustrating conceptual areas of professionals' involvement in research projects on ageing and health. The five clusters are as follows: complex collaboration throughout the research process; adaptation of research to different stakeholders, mutual learning through partnership; applicable and sustainable knowledge; legitimate research on ageing and health. The qualitative latent meaning of the cluster map showed two themes: the process of involvement and the outcome of involvement. A positive strong correlation (0.87) was found between the rating of strengthened research and practice.

CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals conceptual areas on a comprehensive and illustrative map which contributes to the understanding of professionals' involvement in research on ageing and health. A conceptual basis for further studies is offered, where the aim is to investigate the processes and outcomes entailed in involving professionals in research on ageing and health. The study also contributes to the development of instruments and theories for optimizing the involvement of professionals in research.

Psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the Person-Centred Care Assessment Tool2020In: BMJ Open, E-ISSN 2044-6055, Vol. 10, no 7Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to test a Chinese cross-cultural adaptation of the English version of the Person-Centred Care Assessment Tool (P-CAT) and evaluate its psychometric properties.

DESIGN: P-CAT was translated/back-translated using established procedures before the psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version was made.

SETTING: Two hospitals covering urban and suburban areas of Kunming in the Yunnan province of China.

PARTICIPANTS: 152 female hospital staff completed the survey.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Construct validity and reliability, including internal consistency and test-retest reliability, were assessed among a sample of hospital staff.

RESULTS: The factor analysis resulted in a two-component solution that consisted of two subscales. The corrected item-total correlations for all of the items ranged from 0.14 to 0.44, with six items not meeting the cut-off level for item-total correlation (>0.3). The Chinese P-CAT demonstrated strong reliability, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.91-0.94 for the scales and a test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.88 for the overall scale scores. The intraclass correlation was 0.92 (95% CI 0.90 to 0.95).

CONCLUSION: P-CAT appears to be a promising measure for evaluating staff perceptions of person-centredness in Chinese hospital environments. The results show that P-CAT can be a useful tool for improving the quality of healthcare in terms of person-centred care in the Chinese context.

Impact of the first health dialogue meetings with newly arrived child migrants and their families in Sweden2019In: British Journal of School Nursing, ISSN 1752-2803, E-ISSN 2052-2827, Vol. 14, no 9Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As a part of its health-monitoring programme, Sweden invites all children to access health services. In this qualitative study, first meetings with newly arrived child migrants and their families are described from the perspective of primary school nurses through three themes: methods and strategies in use, impact of the first health dialogues, and dedication of the school nurses. With many newly arrived migrants and scarce support within the school system, the nurses felt abandoned in balancing their available work hours with their own ambitions and conducting the meetings, including health checkups and mapping the vaccination status of the children.

Factor structure and psychometric properties of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 among adolescents and young adults in Danish, Portuguese, and Swedish2018In: Body image, ISSN 1740-1445, E-ISSN 1873-6807, Vol. 26, p. 1-9Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, the study of body image shifted from focusing on the negative aspects to a more extensive view of body image. The present study seeks to validate a measure of positive body image, the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2; Tylka & Wood-Barcalow, 2015a) in Denmark, Portugal, and Sweden. Participants (N = 1012) were adolescents and young adults aged from 12 to 19. Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the one-dimensional factor structure of the scale. Multi-group confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the scale was invariant across sex and country. Further results showed that BAS-2 was positively correlated with self-esteem, psychological well-being, and intuitive eating. It was negatively correlated with BMI among boys and girls in Portugal but not in Denmark and Sweden. Additionally, boys had higher body appreciation than girls. Results indicated that the BAS-2 has good psychometric properties in the three languages.

    Abstract [en]

Among assistant nurses in the elderly care setting, the health-promoting perspective may be preferable to reduce the risk of a poor psychosocial work environment. Previous studies showed that work motivation increase if both well-being and job satisfaction exist. The aim of this study was to investigate how assistant nurses experience their psychosocial work environment from a health promoting perspective. The study had a qualitative approach with focus group interviews as a method. In total, three focus group interviews were performed with assistant nurses at two different elderly homes. There were 19 participants in the study. The analysis showed three themes that illustrated important aspects of the psychosocial environment. The categories were work motivation, a committed leadership and job satisfaction. The assistants nurses were generally satisfied with their working environment. They described a good fellowship at work and experienced a balance between the demands placed on them and the available resources. The results also showed that the workplace leadership was of great importance for the well-being of the staff. Most assistant nurses considered the nursing work with caretakers meaningful and that it felt motivating to help others. Since their workplaces are constantly being met by saving demands through hard-pressed budgets and organizational changes, a focus on the work environment of assistent nurses is recommended. Prior to future health promotion interventions in the elderly care, it is important to increase the well-being of the staff and to continue to find solutions for a sustainable quality of care.

    Abstract [en]

More interventions with physical activity and movement during school time, have positive effects on the students health and performance in class, and reduces the time spent on sedentary activities. Physical activity is a health-promoting activity which decreases the risk of becoming ill in common public diseases and creates good opportunities for the public health. Sedentary lifestyle increases in the society and is a risk factor for developing chronic diseases and further to early death. physically active decreases, regarding both everyday- and intentional activities. The school is a suitable arena for increasing the physical activity, since it contains a wide target group and can offer equal conditions. The aim was to study secondary teachers attitudes to physical activity and movements during the school time for students in age 13-16, as a health-promoting intervention for a good public health. The empirical data was collected through individual interviews and a final focus group interview with the same participants. Further an inductive qualitative content analysis was conducted. The result showed that the participants were aware of the positive effects of physical activity on the students health, but the individual teacher wasn't responsible to implement more physical activity at school time. physical activity was connected to pulse-raising activities, which should be scheduled or should take place outside the lessons, suggested during the breaks and be arranged by a leisure teacher. The responsibility for the students to be less sedentary and more physically active during the school day, lays on other actors than the teachers themselves. The teachers expressed a need to gain deeper understanding and increased knowledge of physical activity and how they could continue with implementation of it to improve the conditions for the students. Increased implementation of physical activity in school with the teachers as a resource, may be of great importance to further public health interventions and individuals health. The result from the study can increase awareness of health promoting interventions, which could be applied in schools for a better public health.

Challenges faced in daily life by persons with type 2 diabetes: a meta-synthesis2019In: Chronic Illness, ISSN 1742-3953, E-ISSN 1745-9206, Vol. 15, no 3, p. 167-186Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Objectives

To derive improved understanding of the implicit meanings of challenges in daily life from the perspective of persons with type 2 diabetes.

    Methods

A meta-synthesis was conducted with an interpretive and constructivist approach. Four databases were searched for articles published between 2007 and 2011, producing 37 articles for analysis. Van Deurzen's life world theory was applied as an analytic grid.

    Results

Challenges in daily life with type 2 diabetes could be understood as living in a tension between opposing forces, implying a struggle with inevitable paradoxes: living in the present and for the future, trusting oneself while relying on others, and being normal while feeling changed and different.

    Discussion

This synthesis adds knowledge to previous understanding of living with type 2 diabetes, revealing the complexity of daily life when struggling with a lifelong illness. Person-centred care could be used to understand what challenges diabetes may cause in family and working life and the ambivalent feelings the illness can lead to. Future research is needed to implement and evaluate a person-centred care in practice. Since new qualitative research is continuously added to this topic, metasyntheses should be undertaken regularly.

Longitudinal prediction of falls and near falls frequencies in Parkinson's disease: a prospective cohort study2021In: Journal of Neurology, ISSN 0340-5354, E-ISSN 1432-1459, Vol. 268, no 3, p. 997-1005Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Several prediction models for falls/near falls in Parkinson's disease (PD) have been proposed. However, longitudinal predictors of frequency of falls/near falls are poorly investigated. Therefore, we aimed to identify short- and long-term predictors of the number of falls/near falls in PD.

METHODS: A prospective cohort of 58 persons with PD was assessed at baseline (mean age and PD duration, 65 and 3.2 years, respectively) and 3.5 years later. Potential predictors were history of falls and near falls, comfortable gait speed, freezing of gate, dyskinesia, retropulsion, tandem gait (TG), pain, and cognition (Mini-Mental State Exam, MMSE). After each assessment, the participants registered a number of falls/near falls during the following 6 months. Multivariate Poisson regression was used to identify short- and long-term predictors of a number of falls/near falls.

RESULTS: Baseline median (q1-q3) motor (UPDRS) and MMSE scores were 10 (6.75-14) and 28.5 (27-29), respectively. History of falls was the only significant short-time predictor [incidence rate ratio (IRR), 15.17] for the number of falls/near falls during 6 months following baseline. Abnormal TG (IRR, 3.77) and lower MMSE scores (IRR, 1.17) were short-term predictors 3.5 years later. Abnormal TG (IRR, 7.79) and lower MMSE scores (IRR, 1.49) at baseline were long-term predictors of the number of falls/near falls 3.5 years later.

CONCLUSION: Abnormal TG and MMSE scores predict the number of falls/near falls in short and long term, and may be indicative of disease progression. Our observations provide important additions to the evidence base for clinical fall prediction in PD.

Factors associated with fear of falling in people with Parkinson’s disease2014In: BMC Neurology, E-ISSN 1471-2377, Vol. 14, p. 19-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    BACKGROUND:

This study aimed to comprehensibly investigate potential contributing factors to fear of falling (FOF) among people with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD).

    METHODS:

The study included 104 people with PD. Mean (SD) age and PD-duration were 68 (9.4) and 5 (4.2) years, respectively, and the participants' PD-symptoms were relatively mild. FOF (the dependent variable) was investigated with the Swedish version of the Falls Efficacy Scale, i.e. FES(S). The first multiple linear regression model replicated a previous study and independent variables targeted: walking difficulties in daily life; freezing of gait; dyskinesia; fatigue; need of help in daily activities; age; PD-duration; history of falls/near falls and pain. Model II included also the following clinically assessed variables: motor symptoms, cognitive functions, gait speed, dual-task difficulties and functional balance performance as well as reactive postural responses.

    RESULTS:

Both regression models showed that the strongest contributing factor to FOF was walking difficulties, i.e. explaining 60% and 64% of the variance in FOF-scores, respectively. Other significant independent variables in both models were needing help from others in daily activities and fatigue. Functional balance was the only clinical variable contributing additional significant information to model I, increasing the explained variance from 66% to 73%.

    CONCLUSIONS:

The results imply that one should primarily target walking difficulties in daily life in order to reduce FOF in people mildly affected by PD. This finding applies even when considering a broad variety of aspects not previously considered in PD-studies targeting FOF. Functional balance performance, dependence in daily activities, and fatigue were also independently associated with FOF, but to a lesser extent. Longitudinal studies are warranted to gain an increased understanding of predictors of FOF in PD and who is at risk of developing a FOF.

The clinical significance of 10-m walk test standardizations in Parkinson's disease2018In: Journal of Neurology, ISSN 0340-5354, E-ISSN 1432-1459, Vol. 265, no 8, p. 1829-1835Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: The 10-m walk test (10MWT) is a widely used measure of gait speed in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it is unclear if different standardizations of its conduct impact test results.

AIM OF THE STUDY: We examined the clinical significance of two aspects of the standardization of the 10MWT in mild PD: static vs. dynamic start, and a single vs. repeated trials. Implications for fall prediction were also explored.

METHODS: 151 people with PD (mean age and PD duration, 68 and 4 years, respectively) completed the 10MWT in comfortable gait speed with static and dynamic start (two trials each), and gait speed (m/s) was recorded. Participants then registered all prospective falls for 6 months.

RESULTS: Absolute mean differences between outcomes from the various test conditions ranged between 0.016 and 0.040 m/s (effect sizes, 0.06-0.14) with high levels of agreement (intra-class correlation coefficients, 0.932-0.987) and small standard errors of measurement (0.032-0.076 m/s). Receiver operating characteristic curves showed similar discriminate abilities for prediction of future falls across conditions (areas under curves, 0.70-0.73). Cut-off points were estimated at 1.1-1.2 m/s.

CONCLUSIONS: Different 10MWT standardizations yield very similar results, suggesting that there is no practical need for an acceleration distance or repeated trials when conducting this test in mild PD.

Evaluating the usability of two salutogenic instruments on health and work experience, using cognitive interviewing2018In: Journal of Workplace Behavioral Health, ISSN 1555-5240, E-ISSN 1555-5259, Vol. 33, no 3-4, p. 241-259Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Workplace surveys are used in workplace health promotion as a basis for improvements at the workplace. But there is lack of psychometrically and qualitatively validated work-health related instruments with a salutogenic approach. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the two instruments, the Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale and the Work Experience Measurement Scale, among staff of different professions in a healthcare setting. These instruments were evaluated with cognitive interviews conducted at a hospital in Sweden. The respondents were purposefully selected from various criteria such as profession, age, and sex (N = 14). The respondents read the items aloud and then spoke about how they experienced the items. A deductive (partly inductive) content analysis was done from Tourangeau's four concepts of respondent actions: comprehension, retrieval, judgment, and response. Two main categories emerged: (1) interpreting and (2) responding, and an additional six subcategories: difficulty, essence, direction, keywords, strategy, and alternatives. The results showed strengths and weaknesses of the instruments. The results were discussed from various validity aspects: face validity, content validity, and user validity. The validity aspects were connected to concepts of respondent actions as well as to questionnaire and respondent factors for motivation.

Association between sleep habits and being overweight among adolescents in Southern Sweden.: A cross-sectional study.2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The link between sleep and Body Mass Index (BMI) is poorly understood and existing literature on the topic is contradictory. Aim: To investigate the association between Body Mass Index [BMI] and sleep habits in adolescents in Sweden. Methods: This cross-sectional study uses data obtained from the self-reported questionnaires of 1518 (50.7% female) 13- to 15 year-olds in southern Sweden. Questions were on sleep and lifestyle habits and general demographics including height and weight. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to analyze sleep duration, bedtime and rising time, controlling for covariates. Results: The only sleep related variable associated with overweight/obesity was sleep duration on weekends, where longer sleep duration decreased the likelihood of being overweight or obese. Conclusion: This study found that longer sleep duration during weekends was associated with not being overweight. Modifying sleep habits in adolescents is a potential target for obesity intervention and this information is particularly well-suited for school nurses to disseminate to students and their parents.

Association between sleep duration, obesity, and school failure among adolescents2020In: Journal of School Nursing, ISSN 1059-8405, E-ISSN 1546-8364, Vol. 36, no 6, p. 458-463Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between sleep duration, overweight/obesity, and school failure using data obtained from self-reported questionnaires completed by 13- to 15-year-olds in Sweden (n = 1,363; 50.7% female). The height and weight of the participants were measured by school nurses. A multiple logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between sleep duration and overweight/obesity, school failure, and perceived economic situation. A short sleep duration (<7 hr) was associated with overweight/obesity (p = .001), school failure (p = .007), and poorer perceived economic situation (p = .004). Modifying the sleep habits of adolescents is a potential target for obesity intervention as well as for improving school success. This information is particularly well suited for school nurses to disseminate to students and their parents.

Everyday life in a Swedish nursing home during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative interview study with persons 85 to 100 years2021In: BMJ Open, E-ISSN 2044-6055, Vol. 11, no 6, p. 1-7, article id e048503Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: To understand and report on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the everyday lives of frail older persons living in nursing homes by exploring their experiences of how the pandemic-related restrictions had influenced them and in what way.

    DESIGN: Empirical qualitative interview study.

SETTING: A publicly run nursing home in an urban area in Sweden in June 2020. The nursing home had visitor restrictions, cancelled activities and physical distancing requirements since March 2020.

PARTICIPANTS: A total of 10 persons, 85-100 years, living in a Swedish nursing home during the COVID-19 pandemic, were recruited through nursing home management and interviewed in June 2020 using medically approved visors and physical distancing.

ANALYSIS: Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis, which involves familiarisation, coding and definition of themes. Transcripts were coded into data-driven categories before being organised into categories that described and explained the data.

RESULTS: The analysis resulted in the main theme 'It is like living in a bubble', that describes everyday life in the nursing home during the pandemic as a world of its own in which the older persons felt both protected and isolated. This is described in four subthemes: living 1 day at a time, without fear of the virus; feeling taken care of; having limited freedom and missing out on the little extras.

CONCLUSIONS: Contributing to the growing area of COVID-19-related research, our findings provide novel insights into how pandemic-related restrictions in nursing homes represent a risk of isolating older people from the outside world and diminishing their freedom. Put in relation to the previous research, these findings could be applied beyond the pandemic, to develop research and practice that puts focus on how to support older people to decide for themselves how to spend the rest of their lives.

Upplevelse av munhygien hos personer med demens: Undersköterskors perspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Nyhetsmediernas rapportering om mördare: En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av svenska tidningsmedier2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to create a deeper understanding about how male- and female murderers are depicted in the news and to see if there is any difference in the depiction. The focus is to see if there is a pattern between four murderers, two female and two males, and how they are depicted in the media. We also want to see if there is a difference between male and female murderers who committed similar crimes. Previous research shows that there is a difference in how the depiction of male and female murderers. Female offenders are more often befouled then their male counterpart. To examine how the media depict the murderers this study originates from a qualitative content analysis. The material that we base our study on is 40 Swedish articles from different media, ten articles on each murderer from different newspapers. The results we found were that the female murderers are portrayed by media by their crime and norm-breaking behavior. The male murderers are portrayed only after their crime. The conclusion is that we can see a pattern in how media depict male and female murderers and that there is a differs in-between male and female murderers. Swedish newspapers tend to describe female murderers in a more complex way by depicting their crimes and norm braking behavior which leads to a bigger focus and more articles revolving female murderers in the news then male murderers.

Sjuksköterskans bemötande vid hjärtinfarkt: En litteraturöversikt utifrån patienternas perspektiv2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Adolescents’ experiences of staying overnight at family-centered pediatric wards2020In: Sage open nursing, Vol. 6Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Sleep is essential for health and recovery. Hospital stays may affect adolescents’ sleep quality negatively as routines in the ward are not adapted for adolescents’ developmental status or sleep habits. The aims with this study were to (a) explore and describe how adolescents experience sleep in the family-centered pediatric ward, (b) explore and describe how adolescents experience the presence or absence of a parent during the hospital stay, and (c) identify circumstances that the adolescents describe as influential of their sleep in the pediatric wards.

    Methods

This is a qualitative interview study employing thematic analysis with an inductive and exploratory approach. Sixteen adolescents aged between 13 and 17 years participated in the study.

    Results

Three themes were found: the importance of good sleep, safety as a prerequisite for sleep in hospital, and circumstances influencing adolescents’ sleep in hospital.

    Conclusion

The adolescents described their sleep at the pediatric ward positively, but mentioned disturbing factors associated with pain, nightly check-ups, noises, and inactivity. Parental presence was perceived as very positive both during the night and the day.

Social och situationell prevention i praktiken: En studie om Skellefteå och Ekerö kommuns lokala brottsförebyggande arbete med barn och ungdomar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Neutralizing Ljungan virus antibodies in children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes2021In: Journal of General Virology, ISSN 0022-1317, E-ISSN 1465-2099, Vol. 102, no 5Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ljungan virus (LV), a Parechovirus of the Picornavirus family, first isolated from a bank vole at the Ljungan river in Sweden, has been implicated in the risk for autoimmune type 1 diabetes. An assay for neutralizing Ljungan virus antibodies (NLVA) was developed using the original 87-012 LV isolate. The goal was to determine NLVA titres in incident 0-18 years old newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes patients (n=67) and school children controls (n=292) from Jämtland county in Sweden. NLVA were found in 41 of 67 (61 %) patients compared to 127 of 292 (44 %) controls (P=0.009). In the type 1 diabetes patients, NLVA titres were associated with autoantibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA) (P=0.023), but not to autoantibodies against insulin (IAA) or islet antigen-2 (IA-2A). The NLVA assay should prove useful for further investigations to determine levels of LV antibodies in patients and future studies to determine a possible role of LV in autoimmune type 1 diabetes.

    Abstract [sv]

Factors associated with participation and change over time in domestic life, peer relations and school for adolescents with and without self-reported neurodevelopmental disorders: a follow-up prospective study2018In: Frontiers in Education Conference, Conference Proceedings, ISSN 1539-4565, Vol. 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Even though participation in everyday events is a vital part in the fulfilment of human rights, adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders often face participation restrictions in every-day activities. Few studies have investigated the predictors for participation in different contexts, over time and in relation to the same outcome variables. The objective of the current study was therefore to investigate predictors of change in participation operationalized as frequency of attendance and perceived importance in domestic life activities, peer related activities, and school activities as experienced by adolescents with and without self-reported neurodevelopmental disorders. Method: Associations with participation, both in terms of frequency and perceived importance, in domestic life, peer relations, and the school setting were investigated using six independent variables measuring experience of time and self, sex, age, stress, support from siblings, and atmosphere in family at two-time (with approximately 2 years in between). The sample consisted of adolescents with and without self-reported neurodevelopmental disorders (n= 916). Adolescents with self-reported neurodevelopmental disorders were n=154 and adolescents without self-reported neurodevelopmental disorders was n= 762. Data was collected via self-reported questionnaires administered in schools. Results: Three key findings are presented. 1) more factors were associated with participation outcomes at time1 for adolescents without NDD than for adolescents with NDD, but this difference in the number of factors decreases with time; 2) few associations were related to time for both adolescents with and without NDD; and 3) patterns of predicting variables were different for adolescents with and without NDD. Conclusion: The findings indicate that the factors related to participation in and outside school differs between groups, when the impairment or disability is not considered as a predictor for participation. This study supports the need for using a multidimensional developmental and contextual perspective in addressing enhanced participation for adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Tandvårdsrädsla hos tredje års elever på gymnasiet2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

En begreppsanalys av shinrin yoku (skogsbad): en relevant naturterapi i distriktssköterskans hälsofrämjande arbete?2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim was to clarify the meaning of shinrin yoku by identifying the concept’s antecedants, defining attributes and consequences in order to possibly expand the district nurse’s health enhancing competence and treatment options. Background: Swedish healthcare is facing a number of considerable challenges and improvement requirements and investments are made to prevent illnesses and enlarge the primary care. In the future the distict nurse will probably work with second nature related ill health in a larger extent. More science illuminates the positive and health enhancing effects of nature and evidence shows that nature works relaxing and promotes recover after stress but also of the immune system. Paradigm changes is making room for nature in health care. Science has shown that the concept and nature therapy of shinrin yoku gives plenty of health enhancing effect but shinrin yoku’s definition is unclear and changes meaning depending on context which is confusing. Method: Walker and Avant’s concept analysis in eight steps. Findings: Shinrin yoku is defined by its attributes forest visit, slow walk, activating the senses, mindfulness, phytoncides and no achievement. Its antecedents are a forest-style environment, serenity, switched-off technology and guide. Consequences: shinrin yoku brings health enhancing effects in six different areas: heart and blood vessels, psyche and mood, the endocrine system, the immune system, the brain and the autonomic nervous system and inflammation. Conclusion: Shinrin yoku can be considerable from a public health perspective though it can be seen as a stress relieving factor as well as a health enhancing resource. The therapy can be used as prevention, complement or separate treatment depending on the needs. It is a holistic way of feeling better that makes the most of nature without harming it.

Doctoral students’ experiences of being affiliated with an interdisciplinary graduate school in aging and health2021In: Teaching in Higher Education, ISSN 1356-2517, E-ISSN 1470-1294, p. 1-16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim is to describe the development of a novel interdisciplinary graduate school, using the Swedish National Graduate School for Competitive Science on Ageing and Health (SWEAH) as a case example. We explore doctoral students’ perceptions of being part of SWEAH and provide implications for practice. Written self-reports reflecting 78 students’ experiences and perceptions were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that affiliation with SWEAH is highly valued. The students emphasized the tailored courses and learning activities and reported that it was instrumental in deepening their knowledge and broadening their research perspectives. The findings demonstrate how students navigate between disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts and become enculturated with intellectual mindset and understanding of the importance of network building. The graduate school adds an interdisciplinary layer of learning, influenced by peers and researchers, and demonstrates the importance of community building within interdisciplinary environments and how it can be achieved.

Det obekväma samtalet: en litteraturöversikt om sjuksköterskors kommunikation kring sexualitet2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Att möta patienter i livets slutskede i den somatiska slutenvården: sjuksköterskors upplevelse2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Measuring life satisfaction in Parkinson's disease and healthy controls using the satisfaction with life scale2016In: PLOS ONE, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 11, no 10, article id e0163931Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The 5-item Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) was designed to measure general life satisfaction (LS). Here we examined the psychometric properties of the SWLS in a cohort of persons with Parkinson`s disease (PwPD) and age and gender matched individuals without PD. The SWLS was administered to PwPD and controls from the Norwegian ParkWest study at 5 and 7 years after the time of diagnosis. Data were analysed according to classical test theory (CTT) and Rasch measurement theory. CTT scaling assumptions for computation of a SWLS total score were met (corrected item-total correlations >0.58). The SWLS was reasonably well targeted to the sample and had good reliability (ordinal alpha, 0.92). The scale exhibited good fit to the Rasch model and successfully separated between 5 statistically distinct strata of people (levels of SWLS). The seven response categories did not work as intended and the scale may benefit from reduction to five response categories. There was no clinically significant differential item functioning. Separate analyses in PwPD and controls yielded very similar results to those from the pooled analysis. This study supports the SWLS as a valid instrument for measuring LS in PD and controls. However, Rasch analyses provided new insights into the performance and validity of the SWLS and identified areas for future revisions in order to further improve the scale.

Transsexuella personer och sjuksköterskor möten i vården: en litteraturstudie2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Police officers’ and police students’ beliefs about deception in the framework of the Truth-Default Theory2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The ability to detect deception is of critical value in criminal and investigative contexts. This study has investigated beliefs about deception detection held by police officers (N = 63) and police students (N = 130). The results show that there are inconsistencies when comparing the beliefs to empirical research findings. One example is the belief that liars avert their gaze. The results are discussed and contrasted with the Truth-Default Theory. Instead of a focus on cues that are probabilisticallyassociated with deception, the Truth-Default Theory focuses on contextualized communication content. The theory recognizes that people are truth biased. Truth-Default Theory proposes that reliance on cues pushes the accuracy of deception detection to the level of chance.

Riskfaktorer som skapar arbetsrelaterad stress bland sjuksköterskor: en kvalitativ litteraturstudie2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Shared decision making (SDM): patienters upplevelse av delat beslutsfattande2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Health related resources among older persons that receive preventive home visits: implications for further recommendations on health promotion2019Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the sustainable development goals for 2030 the emphasis is on health promotion to enable healthy lives and wellbeing for all. Health promotion from an individual perspective focus on enabling the person to take control and improve health, by focusing on positive health related resources. Health promotion can be applied to older persons during a preventive home visit (PHV). Most of the studies made on PHVs to older persons have focused on risk factors. Suggestions for improvement of the PHV would be to add recommendations that promote health related resources, not only look at risk factors. In order to develop health promotion for older persons there is a need for research about positive health related resources. Therefore this study aim for exploring health related resources that could be found among older persons that have received a PHV.

Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used including older persons age ≥75 years old, living in their own homes, and that had received PHV. Data were collected during a period of nine months, in two municipalities in the south of Sweden. Questions covered wellbeing, nutrition, physical health, functional ability, housing and economy. Binary logistic regression was used to analyse data.

Results: In total 625 older persons were included in the study, 55.4 % were women, mean age was 80.6 (standard deviation 2.2 years). Preliminary results indicate that following factors are significantly associated with good general health (adjusting for age and gender): being able to do things that make one feel valuable, satisfied with existence, physically active several times per week, having no physical problems to participate in social activities, not feeling sad, not having reduced energy and not having reduced endurance.

Conclusion: This results indicate that it can be of importance to pay attention to some specific health related resources when giving health promotion advices during the PHV.
