Dental status in nursing home residents with domiciliary dental care in Sweden2017In: Community Dental Health, ISSN 0265-539X, Vol. 34, no 4, p. 203-207Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: To describe the dental health status of elderly people in nursing homes receiving domiciliary dental care.

    DESIGN: Case note review.

CLINICAL SETTING: Nursing homes in 8 Swedish counties.

PARTICIPANTS: Care dependent elderly people (≥65 years).

METHODS: Clinical data, including the number of remaining natural teeth, missing and decayed teeth (manifest dental caries) and root remnants, recorded by dentists according to standard practices. Medical and dental risk assessments were performed.

RESULTS: Data were available for 20,664 patients. Most were women (69.1%), with a mean age of 87.1 years (SD 7.42, range 65-109). The mean age for men was 83.5 years (SD 8.12, range 65-105). Two or more medical conditions were present in most of the population. A total of 16,210 individuals had existing teeth of whom 10,974 (67.7%) had manifest caries. The mean number of teeth with caries was 5.0 (SD 5.93) corresponding to 22.8% of existing teeth. One in four individuals were considered to have a very high risk in at least one professional dental risk assessment category.

CONCLUSIONS: Care dependent elderly in nursing homes have very poor oral health. There is a need to focus on the oral health-related quality of life for this group of frail elderly during their final period of life.

The invisible work with tobacco cessation: strategies among dental hygienists2012In: International Journal of Dental Hygiene, ISSN 1601-5029, E-ISSN 1601-5037, Vol. 10, no 1, p. 54-60Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective:  This study elucidates dental hygienists’ experiences of work with tobacco cessation among patients who smoke or use snuff.

Methods:  Data were obtained and categorized by interviewing 12 dental hygienists, who worked actively with tobacco cessation interventions. Qualitative content analysis was used for analysis.

Results:  The latent content was formulated into the core category ‘the invisible oral health promotion work’. The informants thought that they had a responsibility to work with tobacco cessation. They perceived the financial system in which they perform the activity as frustrating, because tobacco cessation has no treatment code in the dental care insurance. This was one of several reasons why they had to integrate it in other treatment procedures. The results identified three categories: ‘balance in the meeting’, ‘possibilities and hindrance’ and ‘procedures’. In the narratives, both positive and negative aspects were displayed.

Conclusions:  The financial conditions for tobacco cessation interventions need to be reformed and the activity has to be given a higher priority in the organization of dental care. Practical training in performing tobacco cessation interventions is important during the dental hygiene education; otherwise, tobacco cessation interventions will remain invisible in oral health promotion in the future.

Tobacco cessation activities among dental hygienists in Sweden2010In: Abstracts for ISDH 2010, 1-3 July 2010, Glasgow, UK / [ed] Editor-in-chief Marjolijn Hovius, 2010, p. 190-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate current practice and perceived barriers regarding tobacco cessation activities among Swedish dental hygienists (DHs). A secondary aim was to study knowledge about the importance of tobacco cessation in relation to different oral health conditions.

Methods: A questionnaire including twenty-five questions was mailed to 400 randomly selected DHs in Sweden asking them about their tobacco cessation routines and perceived barriers. Questions were also included regarding knowledge about the importance of tobacco activities in relation to different conditions: caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, and dental implants. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee at Kristianstad University, Sweden.

Results: The response rate was 57% n = 229). Forty-five percent n = 103) of these had received courses in tobacco cessation during or after their dental hygienist graduation. Tobacco cessation services were given by 64% n = 146) of the DHs. To improve the work with tobacco cessation 53% n = 121) of the DHs expressed a need for written guidelines and 37% n = 84) wished for courses. Of those DHs (n = 83) who did not provide tobacco cessation advice, 69% (n = 57) reported insufficient competence, while the remaining 31% (n = 26) reported other obstacles to offering the service.

Conclusions: The present study indicates that to provide tobacco cessation advice in clinical practice, DHs require theoretical knowledge and clinical experience in this topic.

Självupplevd oral hälsa hos patienter som strålats mot huvud- och halscancer2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to illustrate how patients radiated against head and neck cancer, experience their oral health after ending radiotherapy. The study is qualitative and considers interviews with eight informants. The interviews were conducted using an interview guide. The interviews were recorded on a tape recorder and lasted about 10-20 minutes. The interview data were then analysed using a qualitative content analysis. The results of this study show that a majority of the respondents experience their oral health negatively after ending radiotherapy; these are mentioned in physical effect and mental limitation. The informants experienced pain and dry mouth after completing radiotherapy. The results also showed that they had trouble eating, including swallowing and chewing difficult and that they were forced to make dietary changes. The informants experienced generally it was hard to eat at large surroundings because the fear of choking occurred. Radiotherapy had also affected the informants psychologically, as they often was in low mood. The conclusion of the study shows that these patients experience pain, have trouble eating and that they are affected psychologically as well as inhibited socially.

Att vara eller inte vara hållbara?: En eventstudie om effekten av ny hållbarhetsinformation2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Stickrädsla och nålfobi hos vuxna: En litteraturstudie utifrån ett patientperspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease that breaks down the muscles of the body. This debilitates the functions of the body. In order to get through everyday life the dependence on help from both aids and people increases. Aim: The aim is to elucidate experiences of being dependent on help because of ALS. Method: A qualitative content analysis was used and the data was gathered from blogs and biographies describing persons living with ALS. Results: The result describes following categories: Being dependent on help from aids, relatives, formal helpers and the community. Discussion: The main findings were that persons could feel powerlessness and as if they no longer were involved in their own lives. There was a fear that strangers would involve and take care of the personal needs and because of that feelings of inferiority could occur. Several persons were dissatisfied with the lack of help from the community and the feeling of being questioned often came up.

Hur resonerar klienten?: Klient–revisor relationen utifrån ett klientperspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Långvarig smärta: personers erfarenheter av smärtbehandling2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

I have with this literature study closer studied the term immersion and it's connection to user interfaces within video games in the FPS-genre (First-Person Shooter). The study first presents previous research that has occurred in the fields of immersion, user interfaces and video games. Three things are then, from this, later lifted up in the problem specification, those three are, that immersion can affect people, that user interfaces are critical links between the gamer and the game and that the genre is significant in the development of a user interface. The purpose of the study has been to a research current theory which has expanded my knowledge in the fields of immersion, user interfaces and video games. A qualitative oriented research with hermeneutics as the methodology has been applied in the execution of the study.

I then present, in the results chapter, three examples of games in the FPS-genre where it is found that two of these games have a user interface that supports immersion with the third game having a user interface that breaks immersion. The results have then been extracted into four guidelines with the purpose to give user interface designers clear instructions about what applies in the development of user interfaces that supports immersion in the FPS-genre. The conclusion of the study has then been that user interfaces can affect immersion in both a positive and in a negative way.

Work experience and school worker's health evaluated by salutogenic health indicators2011In: Acta Medica Lituanica, ISSN 1392-0138, Vol. 18, no 2, p. 86-91Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background. The aim of the study was to establish relations between work experience and health, evaluated by salutogenic health indicators, among school workers.

Materials and methods. Teachers (n = 180) and other school workers (n = 154) from randomly selected Panevėžys district schools were questioned using instruments developed by scientists of the Kristianstad University: the Work Experience Measurement Scale (WEMS) and Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale (SHIS). The questionnaire of personal data contained questions about sociodemographic and work-related characteristics.

The differences among the mean values were tested by the independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to check the internal consistency. The significance level was accepted at p = 0.05.

Results. In the teachers’ group, 86.7% were females (75.3% among others), 20.4%were older than 55 years (30.7% in other goups), 18.9% held an executive position(8.5% among others). Teachers, as compared with other school workers, scored higher the domain of internal work experience, (76.9 vs. 62.8, respectively), while other school workers gave higher standardized scores for the time experience domain (71.9 vs. 63.7, p < 0.001 respectively). The SHIS scores among teachers varied from 54.7 (worst experience) to 78.0 (best experience), p < 0.001. In the group of other school workers, the SHIS mean scores varied from 51.9 to 80.0, p < 0.001.

Conclusions. Teachers more positively evaluated the domain of internal working

experience, while other school workers were more satisfied with time experience at the workplace. The established strong correlation between work experience and health, measured by salutogenic health indicators, encouraged the idea to implement workrelated health promotion at school.

Psychosocial work experiences related to health: a study of Lithuanian hospital employees2015In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 53, no 3, p. 669-677Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Research in the area of workplace health promotion from a salutogenic perspective is lacking in Eastern Europe.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between psychosocial work environment and health from a salutogenic perspective among Lithuanian hospital workers.

METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design a questionnaire was distributed to staff in a large hospital in Lithuania. Out of 811 employees, 714 completed the survey: 151 physicians, 449 nurses and 114 other staff members (e.g., psychologists, technicians, therapists). A response rate of 88.0% was achieved. The Work Experience Measurement Scale (WEMS) and the Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale (SHIS) were linguistically adapted and used for the first time in a Lithuanian context. Logistic and multiple linear regression models were used for the analyses.

RESULTS: Supportive working conditions, positive internal work experiences and time experience contributed the most to good health, defined as a high SHIS index. Having an executive post was significantly related to good work experiences, i.e. a high WEMS score, while being at the age of 40-54 years was associated with a low WEMS score. Physicians had the highest score on supportive working conditions; while nurses had the lowest scores on autonomy.

CONCLUSIONS: A salutogenic approach enables an organisation to identify how to improve working conditions for the employees by focusing on possibilities and resources. Individual activities for workplace health promotion among different work groups seem necessary.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our study is to research what the future help-needs and expectations on the civilian society are among Swedish soldiers before they are sent on their first deployment abroad, especially to Afghanistan. The fact that Sweden sends soldiers to a warzone is something that is new nd research according the help-needs from the returning soldiers are missing.

This study is based on a qualitative method where the data consists of four focus group interviews with at least two participants in each focus group from three different military bases in Sweden. The results indicate that the soldiers´expectations on the civilian society are low but that they would like to have more support from the civilian society. An important notice during the study, we encountered the fact that the participants in some way feel stigmatized. The results also show that they want the Swedish armed forces to be in charge and provide the care for the soldiers where health professionals involved have som military background. In the results found we also see that they are in different extent thinking and aware of the risks with deployment in Afghanistan and that they are thinking more on the physical risks rather than the psychological.

One of the final conclusions is that if they really are stigmatized this might be a new group of people for the Swedish social services to work with.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Overweight increases among Swedish children and school nurses have an important part to reduce overweight among children. Aim: Describe school nurses experiences of their health promotion for overweight in students. Method: Nine school nurses were interviewed individually by semi-structured interviews. The interviews were analyzed based on a content analysis, categories and subcategories were designed to provide an overview of the school nurses experiences. Results: School nurses usually meet students during a health conversation, this meeting is usually the foundation of their health work. The school nurses strive to individualize the support they give the students and they often use the method of motivational interviewing to motivate students to make a change. They can also assist with various diet and exercise advice. The school nurses explain that there is often a need for collaboration in order to get students to become active and lose weight. Both within their own profession but especially inter professional collaboration in the school environment. The parents get involved in this work by some of the school nurses while others believe that the student needs to feel independent. Conclusion: This study thus suggests both differences and similarities in health promotion for overweight among student. To develop a united strategy and guidelines for their work can therefore be a part of the improvement of their health promotion against overweight among students.

Distriktssköterskans hälsofrämjande och förebyggande arbete relaterat till stress: En kvalitativ intervjustudie2015Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The number of people suffering from stress-related mental and physical health problems increase. The basis of district nurses work is to prevent illness and promote health. Aim: The purpose of this paper was to describe how the district nurses experience their health promotion and preventive work related to stress. Method: A qualitative study was conducted through interviews with 16 district nurses, working in nine different health care centers in Skåne. Data analysis was carried out with qualitative content analysis based on an inductive approach. Results: The results showed that the district nurses worked with health promotion and prevention related to stress either by providing "self-help" or as a result of lack of time, opportunity and guidelines, handed over responsibility for stress management of patients by referring them to a more suitable healthcare provider. District nurses worked actively by providing self-care advice, encouraged and gave the patient tools to change their situation. Conclusion: To strengthen the district nurses' health promotion and preventive role and encourage more stress prevention requires to make the district nurses' work visible. National guidelines and recommendations that support the stress prevention, and the time and training to broaden their knowledge is also necessary. If not, patients suffering from stress will be referred to colleagues in other disciplines to a greater extent than is necessary.

Sjuksköterskans stöd vid smärtbehandling av patienter med cancerrelaterad smärta: En litteraturstudie om sjuksköterskans omvårdnadsåtgärder2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A good insight in the economic market leads to a favorable position from which we can maximize the profits of our investments. Is it possible to make such investments with regards only to the size of the companies we are considering? Numerous studies have been made on the small firm effect as an anomaly of the capital market. The effect supposedly tells us that, given the same period of time, small companies generates a higher percentage return than large companies. This contradicts the Efficient-market hypothesis, and the purpose of this research is to analyze whether this could be true, or not. The research study is made with regards to micro-size companies in the Swedish capital market during the years 2005-2014, thus, this is an extreme version of the small firm effect. A quantitative statistical analysis is used to measure the average return of three different stock portfolios; Large Cap, Small Cap and Aktietorget. Three different hypothesis are tested and the results analyzed with the help of statistical T-tests in SPSS are used. The results of the study is that there is no solid statistical proof that there is a difference in profit between the three different markets during the time period. Nor could an effect be seen during any smaller time period within the given time frame.

Finding the CSR Sweet Spot: Establishing a Measurement for the Consumer Demand for CSR2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The concept of CSR is increasingly important in society, and firms are expected to be profitable while ethical. Deciding how to best engage in CSR activities can be difficult, but using a supply-and-demand framework can help firms to maximize their CSR activities. However, the demand for CSR has been proven difficult to measure, but can perhaps be established when dividing the demand into different components. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate how consumer awareness, attitude, and buying behavior, in relation to CSR, affect each other; to establish a measurement for consumer demand for CSR. To find an answer, an explanatory and a deductive research approach was used and consumers were surveyed in a quantitative study to establish a measurement for the consumer demand for CSR. This study provides both managerial and theoretical implications to the field of CSR. The theoretical implication lies in contributing empirical evidence into the discussion of supply-and-demand for CSR. Practically, this study informs managers, in the fast fashion industry, that consumer attitude can be used as a measurement when establishing the consumer demand for CSR. It is suggested for future research that it would be interesting to use other control variables to further elaborate on the findings of this study.

What does it take to make them stay?: how place satisfaction relates to willingness to stay of the creative class2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Swedish students in smaller university host cities leave in favor of more attractive places after having completed their studies. Failing to retain newly graduated students is a problem for university host cities as educated people are associated with the group referred to as the creative class. Members of the creative class are drivers of regional economic growth, and have historically proven to be important for creating and developing the well-being of cities. Different place attributes have been found to affect place satisfaction and consequently willingness to stay; while place attachment, more specifically social bonds, has been found to be important for the creative class when choosing a place to reside. The purpose of this study is therefore to explain how place satisfaction, moderated by place attachment, relates to the willingness to stay of the creative class. The study used a quantitative research approach by surveying students at Kristianstad University, where the validated Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) was used to measure place satisfaction; resulting in a total of 306 responses. The result demonstrates that there is a strong positive relationship between place satisfaction and willingness to stay of the creative class, but also that the relationship is positively moderated by place attachment. The theoretical implications are that urbanity and diversity are the least important place attributes for the creative class. The managerial implications for Kristianstad are that the city needs to promote or develop its cost-efficiency and job situation to make creative people more willing to stay.

    Abstract [en]

A difference of opinion exists regarding the issue of relatives being present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in hospital. Despite international guidelines from the Emergency Nursing Association stating that relatives should be offered the opportunity to be present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, this is generally not the case. The aim: of this study was to describe relatives' experiences of being present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in hospital. Method: A literature review in which 13 scientific papers have been reviewed. Results: Relatives preferred to be given the option to attend the cardiopulmonary resuscitation or not. Most relatives were satisfied with their decision to attend and would do it again even though the situation was perceived as difficult. Relatives experienced an emotional connection with the patient and felt that they handled the situation better if they were given continuous information on the events and had a support person at their side. Relatives also felt it easier to cope with the grieving process when they had shared their loved ones last moment. Conclusion: The attendance of relatives during cardiopulmonary resuscitation is still a relatively unexplored area. To be given the option to attend or not is important, as is continuous information during the resuscitation as well as a support person throughout the process. Relatives who were present during resuscitation showed lower tendency to experience negative psychological effects, and that the grieving process felt easier to go through.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe non-surgical treatment options for the diseases mucositis and peri-implantitis found in present literature. The literature review also illustrates the effect of the treatment opptions on soft tissue with mucositis and peri-implantitis surrounding dental implants. The study reviews twelve scientific articles that have been processed from the aim of the study. The result shows six therapy options, Er:YAG laser, air abrasive, ultrasonic device, hand instruments, hand instruments in combination with antibiotics and hand instruments in combination with clorhexidin. The following methods are described according to how they are used and how they affect the soft tissue surrounding dental implants. The therapy options showed some improvements with reduced pocket depth, bleeding on probing (BOP) and gain in clinical attachment level (CAL). Several studies accentuate the importance of good self-care and regular visits for supportive care which have an impact on the survival of the implants and in avoiding progress of disease. All of the therapy options have positive effects but to different extent and it is not concluded how long the positive effect remains in the soft tissue.

Should I stay or should I go?: A study exploring how service influence e-loyalty2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Being an e-retailer within the Swedish fashion e-commerce industry while the biggest change in relationship marketing since the industrial revolution takes place, e-loyalty can be claimed to be more crucial than ever before. The ability influencing customer being loyal is claimed to be harder within e-commerce compared to traditional physical stores and also claimed to be more expensive. With this presented, knowing what influences e-loyalty can be a decisive advantage.

Previous research has been conducted and showed as stated, customer trust and satisfaction have a positive relationship to customer loyalty and profitability of organizations. But in order to achieve a higher level of e-loyalty, this study aims to develop an understanding of how service can influence e-loyalty.

Based on the theoretical framework in addition with the conducted informal discussion with practitioners within the studied industry, a conceptual model has been created. To test this model, a questionnaire was created and answered by 95 students at Kristianstad University. Through this, the collected data was evaluate and brought the conclusion that some factors previous literature has identified can be questioned. Therefore, more extensive research can be necessary in order to better understand the scientific gaps in the field.

As the results indicate a variation within the control variable shopping frequency, we suggest that future research focuses on evaluating this variable further. With better understanding the different potential customers, a higher level of e-loyalty can be achieved.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Among nurses in emergency department is a difference of opinion regarding the issue of relatives being present during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This can depend on the nurse have positive or negative experience of the situation. Since several years international guidelines are written to recommend relatives being present but in general they are not used. The aim: Of this study was to explain nurse’s experiences of relative’s presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in emergency department. Method: A literature review in which 12 qualitative and quantitative scientific papers have been reviewed. Results: During the last years most parts of the nurses changed their opinion from negative to positive regarding to relatives being present at CPR. If relatives been present when CPR wasn´t successful the nurses believed could help the coming grieving process. Nurses believed that relatives easier could accept the sudden death if they were able to touch, to say goodbye and share the last moments in life with their family member. Conclusion: To maintain the nurse positive experience of relative presence during CPR in emergency department needs development- and improvement work. This work needs both theoretical and practical education. And also there are needs to establish the international guidelines to local guidelines.

    Abstract [en]

Active death help is today a current matter. As a nurse, she will, in her career meet dying patients who want active death help. The nurse's main task is to prevent disease, promote health, restore health and alleviate suffering. Aim: The aim was to elucidate the nurse's experience around active euthanasia in countries where it is now allowed, as in the Netherlands and Belgium. Method: The work is structured as a literature study, which a systematic selection of ten scientific articles selected from the databases Cinahl, PubMed and PsykINFO. These were analyzed and presented in three categories. Results: Three categories emerged from the articles' results that became this study's results. The nurses' experience from active euthanasia was an individual experience. The experience varied depending on the patient and the situation. While the nurses experienced conflict with their moral values and laws around active euthanasia, she wanted to at the same time do a good job by ensuring that the patient experienced a good and dignified death as possible. Some nurses felt that the meeting with the patient's relative was not always so easy; however, they felt that it was their duty to take care of them. Conclusion: When the nurse put her personal views to the side, it creates a sense of security in her profession. A good relationship between the two parts is created by open communication. If discussions about the current matter of death and the death process start already in the nurse education, this can cause the knowledge and understanding increases.

    Abstract [en]

Since the last decade the supply of ethical funds has grown on the global fund-market. In Sweden both the supply and demand are growing of investing in companies with social- and ethical responsibilities. But in scientific research there are ambiguities between the performances of these ethical funds where some argues that ethical funds are inferior in terms of risk and return – meanwhile others arguing for the opposite. The purpose with this research is to examine how funds with ethical restrictions perform in terms of risk and return compared with the performances of conventional funds with no restrictions on the Swedish fund-market. The data, which the study is based on, will be analysed through the modern portfolio theory and other theories about restrictions, in particular theories from Markowitz research on diversification in portfolios. The data will further on be examined through three different risk-adjusted measurements, average risk and the funds daily return of five years. The result show that ethical funds generate less return compared to conventional funds. But the study can not prove a significant difference between risk and risk-adjusted return between the two fund-types. On the other hand, the study concludes that the restriction which follows ethical investments does not have a significant impact on the diversification to be able to say that ethical funds perform less than conventional funds in terms of risk and risk adjusted return. The assumption in this study has been that every restriction has the same impact. This approach can be further discovered in future research to examine which of the various restrictions that have the most impact on the performance of risk and return the most.

Upplysningar om risker och osäkerhetsfaktorer2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Undersökningen delas in i fyra olika riskkategorier; finansiell risk, affärsrisk, operationell risk samt strategisk risk.

Because change happens!: analyzing the change agent in legitimizing integrated reporting2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how a sustainability manager, embodying the role of change agent, legitimizes the implementation of Integrated Reporting. By focusing on an Italian public utility, operating in the electricity sector and listed on the Italian stock exchange, which has recently implemented the Integrated Report, this paper unveils how a voluntary change (i.e. the adoption of the Integrated Report) can be achieved thorough the legitimizing work carried out by a sustainability manager driven by strong intrinsic engagement, availability of resources and intense networking.

Design/Methodology/Approach – The case study methodology was adopted to reach the purpose of this research. A longitudinal and explanatory case study was realized by analyzing data collected from different sources. Relevant information was extrapolated from various corporate documents, visit to the case organization and thirteen in depth interviews conducted with sustainability managers, finance managers, communication managers and human resources managers. After triangulating data, findings were analyzed through the lens of institutional entrepreneurship which is the branch of neo-institutional theory explaining how actors can drive substantial changes.

Findings – This study uncovered how the adoption of Integrated Reporting – which requires a substantial change in organizational structure, processes and thinking – can be achieved over time through the perseverance of a sustainability manager who strives to legitimize his individual position and strengthen the value of the whole Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) area within the organization. Such perseverance, necessary to initiate and achieve the desired change, can be successful when the change agent uses available resources and networking skills, to gain support from various groups with different power balances, and to enable people of different organizational areas to collaborate to the end of preparing the Integrated Report.

Research limitations/implications – This research highlights that when people belonging to different organizational areas perceive the added value of implementing a substantial change, they engage in alternative practices and show availability to collaborate. Still, the reluctance to share strategic information in the light of its disclosure in the Integrated Report is perceived, meaning that bridging the gaps between finance and sustainability managers requires more efforts. The true transformation of organizational values and beliefs, in line with the ideas of Integrated Reporting, requires the full acceptance and practice of integrated thinking on each level of the organization.

Practical implications – This paper shows that the voluntary implementation of Integrated Reporting is possible when the reporting tool is not only perceived as a disclosure document, but also as a vehicle that increases the awareness and sharing of corporate integrated value. People in different areas interact in a different way facilitating the horizontal integration of operational activities.

Originality/Value – as an emerging phenomenon, literature has focused on many aspects of Integrated Reporting. This paper adds value to recent debates by focusing on how individual actors legitimize their projects within their organization by highlighting tensions and how they can be overcome to achieve the desired change.

Competing logics in the expansion of public service corporations2016In: Utilities Policy, ISSN 0957-1787, E-ISSN 1878-4356, Vol. 40, p. 125-133Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper contributes to the current debate on the evolving nature and meaning of public service corporations. It draws upon notions of neo-institutional theory and adopts a case study methodology. The study focuses on the case of SMAT, an Italian water corporation, whose value has been recognized at home and internationally. Findings show how a public service corporation's priorities and activities, particularly commercialization and internationalization, are constrained by various factors. These include: the burden of regulatory frameworks, the public nature of the corporation and its governance, the expectations of users, and the need for infrastructural investment.

Exploring the receptivity to accounting regulation change: what information is being disclosed in Italian Management's Reports2012Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is aimed at investigating how regulatory change affects corporate disclosure. In particular, an analysis of the information disclosed in the Management’s Reports prepared by Italian listed companies is conducted. The Italian context is interesting because the 2007 reform has extended the contents to be included in Management’s Reports. Companies have to disclose information pertaining to risks and uncertainties, performance indicators, environment and personnel. These new requirements do not only lead to an increase of the information to be disclosed, but also to a change in the nature of the information made available. In addition to the more traditional financial information, also social, environmental and strategic information must be provided. The content analysis conducted on the 2008 financial year Management’s Reports prepared by the major Italian listed companies allows for formulating reflections on the receptivity to regulatory change. Research findings suggest that only few companies have been receptive to the reform.

IASB ED management commentary versus European regulation: the impact on Management’s Reports of companies listed on Italian stock exchange2014In: Accounting and regulation: new insights on governance, markets and institutions / [ed] Roberto Di Pietra, Stuart McLeay, Joshua Ronen, New York: Springer-Verlag New York, 2014, p. 291-309Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter aims to investigate how regulatory change affects corporate disclosure. The explanations are based on institutional theory which provides an understanding of how organizations may react to a change in the regulatory framework. By conducting a content analysis, the chapter focuses on the information disclosed in the Management’s Reports prepared by the major Italian listed companies after the enactment of the 2007 law. This law extended companies’ disclosure obligations since management has to disclose information pertaining to risks and uncertainties, performance indicators, environment, and personnel. The new requirements not only lead to an increase in the information to be disclosed, but also to a change in the nature of the disclosed information. In addition to the more traditional financial information, also social, environmental, and strategic information should be provided. The main results of the content analysis allow to formulate some tentative reflections on companies’ receptivity to the 2007 regulatory change.

    Abstract [en]

By applying the Foucauldian “governmentality” framework (Foucault, 2009), and its bio-political implications (Foucault, 2008), and following an interpretivist approach, this paper aims at exploring how municipalities drive smart city programs in the pursuit of governmentality goals spanning from efficiency to societal impacts.

We contend that cities striving for smart development engage in programs trying to direct or reorient practices towards desired aims, by adopting various tools (technologies of government) and involving a plurality of actors (governmental experts).

By conducting a longitudinal case study with interventionist elements with reference to the City of Helsinki, we have addressed both the benefits and criticalities faced in Helsinki’s programs introducing new performance measurement systems as a technology of government. Our findings show that such technologies of government are useful, but also problematic tools, especially considering the fragmentation in inter- and intra-departmental operations characterizing smart cities and related forms of resistance.

The "externalisation" of local public service delivery: experience in Italy and Sweden2010In: International Journal of Public Policy, ISSN 1740-0600, E-ISSN 1740-0619, Vol. 5, no 1, p. 41-56Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, the local government sector in European countries has undergone important changes involving, among other things, the externalisation of local public service provision through various forms of corporatisation, public-public collaboration, public-private partnerships and contracting out. An important consequence of these institutional changes has been the recasting of local governance systems through the need for increased cooperation between public and private actors. This article addresses these matters with comparative reference to the experience in Italy and Sweden. In doing so, it considers local governments in their constitutional and legal contexts, leading to more detailed discussions of their externalisation initiatives and resultant organisational forms and governance arrangements. Issues of ownership have been important concerning the significance of 'community' and 'place' in the management of public affairs.

Governance and control of externalized water service management: comparing solutions adopted in Italy and Sweden2011In: Corporate Ownership & Control, ISSN 1727-9232, E-ISSN 1810-3057, Vol. 8, no 3, p. 188-195Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper the challenges imposed on corporate governance of water services in Italy and Sweden are analyzed and compared. From the comparative analysis we notice that with externalization of services more stakeholders become involved in the provision of the services. These stakeholders have common as well as divergent interests and the challenges thus become to find an alignment of interest among stakeholders in order to secure a sustainable provision of the services. The comparative analysis indicate that such alignment is especially difficult when stakeholders have heterogeneous background (public and private sector).
