The Male Body fights back: the intermedial relations between body, autobiographical graphic novel and film in American Splendor2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation takes as its staring point two kinds of intermedial genres: the autobiographical graphic novel, with a male protagonist, and films based on comic books. The graphic novel has been studied, in different perspectives, for example in Baetens (2001); film adaptations based on comicshave been scrutinized by (e. g.) Christiansen (2000), Hofstede (1991), and Hughes (2003). This presentation focuses on the American author Harvey Pekar’s autobiographical comics (illustrated, among others, by Robert Crumb) and the film, directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, based on Pekars’s work, American Splendor (2003). The autobiographical comics or graphic novels are often associated with a typically gendered (male) kind of introspection, reflectivity, and self-analysis. In most cases the autobiographical content focuses on the misgivings, the social phobias, and the exaggerated dullness of the life of the protagonist. The lacks in social skills are in most cases manifested by an unusual interest in the limitations of the own, male body, and sometimes by very self-conscious and deliberate antiaesthetics. The lifestyle and physical looks of the protagonist, as it is depicted in image, and told in words, are thus connected to anti-sociality, neuroticism, and to different kinds of physical deformity (illusionary, of course), a slight overweight and illness. An analogy is hereby made between the social and psychological factors and the male dysfunctional body, an analogy that is underlined by the intermedial qualities of the genres. This analogy is even further amplified in the film adaptation by the studied use of mise-en-scène, the use of the actors’ persona, special effects and, in this case, the fact that the autobiographical subject (Harvey Pekar) makes an appearance in the movie “as himself”. Even though the male body is shown as recalcitrant, passive and cancerous, it is simultaneously used as a sign of resistance against the norms and standards of society, a kind of “anti-ecological physical entity”, as I will have it. Indepth studies of the representations of the male body, that my presentation in part is based on, is found in Ervø och Johansson (2003, two volumes).

The nature of nature writing: the politics of environmental education and the necessity of spiritual commitment in the writings of Stefan Edman2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The nature writing of Swedish author/biologist Stefan Edman (1946 –) is shaped by a mainstream political agenda. Simultaneously it gives voice to aesthetic and spiritual reflections on nature’s processes and on environmental change. This paper focuses on how Edman’s texts function, through rhetoric, scientific clarification and ethical positioning, as both an integral part of an established political context, and as a reflective and critical instance, addressing environmental issues. Edman has for several years upheld a position at the center of Swedish politics; apart from being one of the major nature writers of this and the last century, he is the author of governmental investigations, and closely associated to the Social Democratic Party and one of the originators behind ‘the green welfare state’ during Prime Minister Goran Persson’s reign (1996-2006). In this paper analyses are made of Edman’s nature writing and his work is  contextualized with the intent to demonstrate the specific political significance of the texts’ different modes, with particular attention taken to the key concepts ‘limited resources’ and ‘sustainable development’. The theoretical basis of my paper includes Ursula Heise’s ‘Sense of Place and Sense of Planet’ and Satterfield and Slovic (eds.) What’s Nature Worth’, as well as models of discursive analysis.

Anna i världen: om Anna Rydstedts diktkonst2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

With her 1953 debut Anna Rydstedt (1928-1994) immediately became part of a strong tradition of Swedish women poets, a tradition represented by authors such as Karin Boye and Edith Södergran. The debut was a furious attack on those who had thwarted her attempts to become a minister in the Church of Sweden. Rydstedt’s poetry is always existential, both in its content and process. Writing, for her, is an attempt to create a form, which makes the surrounding world real and possible to hang on to. Writing is also a way of communicating with other people in order to break the isolation of the individual.

Rydstedt’s poetry has the aim of trying to find an existential position – a spot – in life and in the world. This dissertation identifies Rydstedt’s most important thematic and biographic positions in time and space. The arrangement is roughly chronological: it starts with the debut and ends with the posthumously published book. At the same time the first two chapters are explicitly geographical. Rydstedt was very much a poet of place.

The first chapter starts with an examination of the literary life in Lund in the early 1950s, its local, historical, and sociological conditions, and it ends with interpretations of poems from the end of the Lund period in the early 1960s. In general, the 1950s are considered to be a neoromantic period in Swedish literature, but an exception is Lundaskolan (the Lund School), which also emerged during this decade. Rydstedt was then a member of a student literary society, out of which this Lundaskolan grew.

In the second chapter Rydstedt is placed in a context of the theoretical discussion about poetry of place – and the place of poetry. Two poems are interpreted. In the first, it is shown how Rydstedt forms both an existential and lyrical – or literal and literary – structure in time and space. In the second, it is made clear that although Rydstedt combines inner and outer worlds, there is no simple separation between material landscape and immaterial soul.

Öland is also the geographical space of the last three chapters. These chapters primarily follow a thematic development. Central themes such as mother/daughter-relationships, death, and poetic creativity are entangled as they are transposed from a physical to a psychological and eventually to a mythical drama.

The third chapter discusses the symbolic and the biographical role of the father, the daughter, and the mother in Rydstedt’s life and poetry, and the fourth chapter discusses the sun as the central and self-reflexive symbol of Rydstedt’s authorship. The sun represents both life and literature, and, in a way, is a symbiosis of the two.

The fifth and final chapter deals with Rydstedt’s last book and its version of the ancient Greek myth of Demeter and Kore/Persephone. Rydstedt stresses the mother/daughter-relationship and also shows concern for the environment. Most of all, however, this last book of hers is about growing old, about dying, and about various forms of not dying, of living in eternity.

Gösta Berling på La Scala: en transmedial och transnationell kulturkrock iscensatt2011In: IASS 2010 Proceedings: Föredrag vid den 28:e studiekonferensen i International Association of Scandinavian Studies (IASS) i Lund 3-7 augusti 2010 / [ed] Claes-Göran Holmberg, Per Erik Ljung, Lund: Lunds universitet , 2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The article presents literary criticism of the book "Antikrists mirakler" by Selma Lagerlöf. It explores the relationship between Sweden and Italy as seen in Lagerlöf's depictions of Sicily, Italy and in the choices made by Italian translators of the novel. According to the author, Lagerlöf attempted to depict Sicily and its culture as seen by Sicilians themselves, but her perspective remained that of an outsider. Details on the reception of the novel in Italy are also presented.

Likt ett brustet halleluja: trons och tvivlets tematik i Christine Falkenlands prosa2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is a study of the Christian thematics in the novels of Christine Falkenland. It has two basic aims. First, to demonstrate how Christine Falkenland writes herself into, and becomes a distinct voice in, a Christian literary tradition, while simultaneously breaking with this tradition by staging and portraying modern people’s questioning of the Christian worldview. Second, to uncover, examine, and bring together the recurring thematics, motifs, and imagery in Falkenland’s novels. Four novels – Släggan och städet (The Hammer and the Anvil; 1996), Skärvor av en sönderslagen spegel (Fragments of a Broken Mirror; 1997), Min skugga (My Shadow; 1998) and Själens begär (The Soul’s Desire; 2000) – provide a focus for the study. The novels are not seen as separate works, but as parts of a whole; they display a notable consistency in inner as well outer composition.

The theoretical foundations of the study come together under three headings: thematics, intertextuality, and dialogism. By uncovering and mapping the occurrences of repeated symbols, motifs, and themes, a pattern can be discerned – a pattern which is characteristic for the oeuvre as a whole. When it comes to Christine Falkenland, it is obvious that the use of certain recurring words, symbols, and metaphors is connected to the thematic unity of the works. It is also clear that Christine Falkenland is connected to a rich textual tradition through her thematics. Through quotations and allusions, the Bible stands out as her principal intertext, but other sources can also be found, such as sadomasochistic erotic literature and Classical myth. The different voices in the texts are not in accord, but in constant discussion, fighting each other and pulling in opposite directions.

Falkenland’s novels display a traditionally Christian set of problems with basic theological oppositions such as heaven–earth, body–soul, and law–gospel, oppositions which can contain praise as well as lamentation. In this manner, Christine Falkenland displays a literary portrayal of an existential position in the thematics of faith and doubt: the solitary person who fights for her faith, someone who ceaselessly sings her broken hallelujah to a hidden God.
