Dual learning – a challenge for higher education in the new landscape of governance2015In: Tertiary Education and Management, ISSN 1358-3883, E-ISSN 1573-1936, Vol. 21, no 4, p. 277-292Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In many countries, practice-oriented programmes have been recast as university programmes, fuelling debate on the purpose of higher education. We highlight two ways of talking about the challenges for higher education we think are already familiar to readers. We label them ?political-worry discourse? and ?academic-worry discourse?. We argue for a third position that gives due recognition to the turn in governance. Professional work today is performed in a new landscape where maintaining the conditions for autonomy and discretionary work is more important than ever. This has implications for the pedagogic focus of higher education institutions. The proposed ?dual learning? concept addresses this challenge through educating students about governance and allowing students to position themselves in relation to the governance of their professions. By discussing governance, we contribute to a previously neglected field and support the position that higher education may indeed be the best place to provide professional education.

Implementing supervised placement: diversity and change in different professional programs. Paper presenterat vid Professionsnätverkets konferens Kunskap profession och expertis i Växjö, Sverige, 28 – 29 september2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to start a discussion about the variation in how work-based training is described and performed in different academic programs. Every year, for three years, heads of academic programs have been interviewed about their implementation the local reform for supervised placement. The interviews have been conducted at a university that aims to have supervised placement in all programs. Our findings suggest that there are major differences in how to think ”where professional education is good”. Placement may take the form of training at campus, virtual placement and training at work. Different programs have varying resources to support placement. The ideas about what students should do vary from observation to practical work.

    Abstract [sv]

Preparing higher education students for the new landscape of governance2016In: Tertiary Education and Management, ISSN 1358-3883, E-ISSN 1573-1936, Vol. 22, no 3, p. 249-265Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Studies have demonstrated that neoliberal governance dismantles professionals' will to critique, counteracting efforts to improve quality by preventing professionals in all sectors of the labour market from grounding work in their professional convictions. Managing attempts at governance has therefore become an important professional competence. This paper investigates how higher education prepares students for work under neoliberal forms of control. How are they trained to analyse and describe the effects of governance and prepared to work with the standards, manuals and documentation that influence quality in their lines of work? 'Interruptive focus group conversations' were performed with students from various professional programmes at a Swedish university. Student reasoning about governance is explored using theories of governance and subjectification. The results demonstrate that students are aware of the ways in which their professions are governed, the need to conduct discretionary work, but do not have skills to deal with governance critically. This latitude for pedagogical intervention is underutilized.

Rehearsing accountability: how pre-school teachers go about appearing professional2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Today’s professionals appear to be under constant pressure to be able to account for their actions and to do boundary work because there are not any evidently borders for what can be a work task. We want to contribute to a discussion about what demands pre-school teachers has to handle to perform as good professionals in these specific circumstances. From our example I pre-school settings we want to answer the question: what do professionals need to rehearse? And what new forms for this rehearsing accountability are growing up. In a seminal article Lyman and Scott argued that accounting for ones actions is a basic human activity and we use Goffman’s theory about team performance to understand these types of accounting in professional settings.

Standardization meets practice: the case of integrating research-based work placement2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A local reform, with the vision to educate Sweden’s most employable students was adopted by the board at a Swedish university. An important means for reaching the vision was a work placement. Students in all 28 programs at the university should be guaranteed at least five weeks supervised research based practice and learning in companies and organizations. Following the decision, activities were initiated in all Higher education programs to implement the placement reform. To document strategy work, yearly interviews were conducted with the head of the programs, course heads and teachers. Syllabi were collected and changes kept track of. Program dialogues were followed using ethnographic field work methods. University and program strategizing is explored from three questions: 1/ how did staff make sense of and turn strategy into practice? 2) what resources became important to strategy work? and 3) what kind of placement, what kind of examinations, what kind of supervision etcetera were the result. A strategy as practice-perspective is used to explore what became of the standardized model for placement envisioned in the university boards strategy. The result show that standardized placement was not possible for the programs. Instead different understandings of the reform based on the programs different conditions, led to a variation in what kind of placement they introduced.

In tension between organization and profession: professionals in Nordic public service2007Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

What is it like to be a professional in today's Nordic Public sector organisations? In Tension between Organization and Profession describes everyday problems experienced by individuals in offical positions. The authors' analyses are set against a background of rising rates of sick leave, more cases of mental burnout, decreasing resources and constant demand for professional improvement. Rapid changes in organizations, such as new forms of leadership, new technology and management by documents and the call for client-oriented practices are part of the professional working life.

The individual professional is the prime focus of this book. Tensions that arise between the individual and the organization/profession are illustrated by a range of examples of problems that public officals, such as teachers, policemen and nurses, are confronted with on a daily basis. The authors discuss subjects such as increased individualization, complexity in relationships, intensified pace and fragmentation of work.

The title In Tension between Organization and Profession intends to signal an invitation to further the research about a dynamic field where today's professionals meet the requirements of their professions and organizations.

Mentorskap: att organisera skolans möte med nya lärare2003Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

How do teachers think quality? Poster presented at 16th Biennial Conference on Teachers and Teaching July 1-5, 2013 - Ghent, Belgium2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How do teachers think quality? This question is important since the teaching profession seems to be characterized by constant work intensification (Sarfatti-Larson, 1980). Repeated research show a steady increase in the number of tasks teachers are expected to perform (Apple 1989, Faber 1991, Hargreaves 1994, Day 2000, Grundy & Bonser 2000, Sutton 2007, Day & Gu 2007, Aili & Brante 2007, Chang 2009, Steen-Olsen & Eikseth, 2010). Teachers must therefore constantly prioritize between competing tasks and (to the extent they are pursuing quality of teaching) the question that arises is - how do they construct  realtions between tasks that are performed before the lesson and the teaching quality.

In this paper we present an explorative study of how teacher formulate themselves about their daily work tasks in relation to the quality of their teaching. 60 teachers were invited to answer a semi structured web-questionnaire about work tasks they had perform during the day, once a day during two weeks. They were asked to choose two tasks that, from their perspective, had impact on the quality of their teaching in the nearest future. In addition to this they were asked to give each task a name, describe its content and under which circumstances it had been performed, and to specify in which way the task had impact on the teaching nearby. The material includes total 325 respectively 12 received questionnaires.

The analysis focus is on teachers’ meaning-making of what quality is, and the relation between the work before teaching and the outcome of the teaching. A grounded content analysis was performed. The seven tasks identified by the teacher teams in the second questionnaire were analyzed in conjunction with a random sample of answers from the individual questionnaire regarding the same tasks. These tasks are labeled by the teachers name for the work task: Work with individual development plans, Planning of next day’s teaching, Planning of thematic work, Planning a school cinema visit, Production of material and Pupils’ choice.

Some categories for the type of quality impact the teachers report have been construed such as for example “Absolute conditions” for links to a work task to the teaching such as the necessity to have ordered the groceries  before a lesson in cooking or ordered a bus for the transport to a school cinema visit. Another example is “Quality in a presentation” for links between high concentration works such as putting pedagogical considerations into a specific content. The way the teachers construe the reasons for tasks being important to quality are discussed in relation to earlier research about teachers’ professional language, characterization of teacher work, and teacher thinking.

The Validity of Cultural Dimensions in the Development Process of International Advertising2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Culture drives how people communicate and what they communicate. In addition,

culture influences the people’s perception of advertisements. Understanding the

consequences of cultural differences is, therefore, crucial for marketing and

advertising people when it comes to the development of international advertising.

The main purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the approach of

advertising agencies towards cultural differences during the development process

of international advertising. Furthermore, the authors wanted to find out, if

advertising agencies know and apply the cultural theories of Geert Hofstede and

Edward T. Hall during this process, and whether it would be possible to expand

their cultural theories by using the insights gained from the practical work of the

agencies. In order to answer this paper’s research questions, four interviews with

account managers and CEOs in three advertising agencies were conducted and

documentary data were collected. Based on the research findings, one can

conclude that even though advertising agencies are constantly aware of cultural

differences during their development process, there is no structural knowledge or

a structured approach to it. Furthermore, the cultural dimensions of Hofstede and

Hall or any other scientist are not known to the agencies and also not applied, as

they are for various reasons not regarded as supportive and useful guidelines for

the development of suitable ads for culturally different target groups. In addition,

the authors have learned that culture is not a dominating issue during the

development process of international advertising. Thus, instead of adding further

cultural dimensions to the existent theories, a model was developed which

depicts the influencing factors on international advertising and puts cultural

    considerations in relation to them.

A semiotic analysis of the disciplinary affordances of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram in astronomy2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One of the central characteristics of disciplines is that they create their own particular ways of knowing the world. This process is facilitated by the specialization and refinement of disciplinary-specific semiotic resources over time. Nowhere is this truer than in the sciences, where it is the norm that disciplinary-specific representations have been introduced and then refined by a number of different actors. As a consequence, many of the semiotic resources used in the sciences today still retain some traces of their historical roots.

In this paper we analyse one such disciplinary-specific semiotic resource from the field of Astronomy—the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We audit the potential of this semiotic resource to provide access to disciplinary knowledge—what Fredlund et al (2012) have termed its disciplinary affordances. Our analysis includes consideration of the use of scales, labels, symbols, sizes and colour. We show how, for historical reasons, the use of these aspects in the resource may differ from what might be expected by a newcomer to the discipline.

We suggest that some of the issues we highlight in our analysis may, in fact, be contributors to alternative conceptions and therefore propose that lecturers pay particular attention to the disambiguation of these features for their students.

    Abstract [en]

Becoming part of a discipline involves learning to interpret and use a range of disciplinary-specific semiotic resources (Airey, 2009). These resources have been developed and assigned particular specialist meanings over time. Nowhere is this truer than in the sciences, where it is the norm that disciplinary-specific representations have been introduced and then refined by a number of different actors in order to reconcile them with subsequent empirical and theoretical advances. As a consequence, many of the semiotic resources used in the sciences today still retain some (potentially confusing) traces of their historical roots. However, it has been repeatedly shown that university lecturers underestimate the challenges such disciplinary specific semiotic resources may present to undergraduates (Northedge, 2002; Tobias, 1986).

In this paper we analyse one such disciplinary-specific semiotic resource from the field of Astronomy—the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. First, we audit the potential of this semiotic resource to provide access to disciplinary knowledge—what Fredlund et al (2012) have termed its disciplinary affordances. Our analysis includes consideration of the use of scales, labels, symbols, sizes and colour. We show how, for historical reasons, the use of these aspects in the resource may differ from what might be expected by a newcomer to the discipline. Using the results of our analysis we then created an online questionnaire to probe what is discerned (Eriksson, Linder, Airey, & Redfors, in press) with respect to each of these aspects by astronomers and physicists ranging from first year undergraduates to university professors.

Our findings suggest that some of the issues we highlight in our analysis may, in fact, be contributors to the alternative conceptions of undergraduate students and we therefore propose that lecturers pay particular attention to the disambiguation of these features for their students.

On the disciplinary affordances of semiotic resources2014In: Book of abstracts: The First Conference of the International Association for Cognitive Semiotics(IACS-2014), September 25-27, 2014 Lund University, 2014, p. 54-55Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the late 70’s Gibson (1979) introduced the concept of affordance. Initially framed around the needs of an organism in its environment, over the years the term has been appropriated and debated at length by a number of researchers in various fields. Most famous, perhaps is the disagreement between Gibson and Norman (1988) about whether affordances are inherent properties of objects or are only present when they are perceived by an organism. More recently, affordance has been drawn on in the educational arena, particularly with respect to multimodality (see Linder (2013) for a recent example). Here, Kress et al. (2001) have claimed that different modes have different specialized affordances. Then, building on this idea, Airey and Linder (2009) suggested that there is a critical constellation of modes that students need to achieve fluency in before they can experience a concept in an appropriate disciplinary manner. Later, Airey (2009) nuanced this claim, shifting the focus from the modes themselves to a critical constellation of semiotic resources, thus acknowledging that different semiotic resources within a mode often have different affordances (e.g. two or more diagrams may form the critical constellation).

In this theoretical paper the concept of disciplinary affordance (Fredlund et al., 2012) is suggested as a useful analytical tool for use in education. The concept makes a radical break with the views of both Gibson and Norman in that rather than focusing on the discernment of one individual, it refers to the disciplinary community as a whole. Put simply, the disciplinary affordances of a given semiotic resource are determined by those functions that the resource is expected to fulfil by the disciplinary community. Disciplinary affordances have thus been negotiated and developed within the discipline over time. As such, the question of whether these affordances are inherent or discerned becomes moot. Rather, from an educational perspective the issue is whether the meaning that a semiotic resource affords to an individual matches the disciplinary affordance assigned by the community. The power of the term for educational work is that learning can now be framed as coming to discern the disciplinary affordances of semiotic resources.

In this paper we will briefly discuss the history of the term affordance, define the term disciplinary affordance and illustrate its usefulness in a number of educational settings.

    Abstract [en]

The authors compared traditional and Web-based versions of an environmental education program in terms of their effectiveness in raising knowledge and promoting attitudes of environmental issues. They used a pretest?posttest nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental design. Results showed a statistically significant increase of knowledge scores for both groups. The junior high students who received computer-assisted instruction (CAI) significantly outscored their peers who were taught traditionally in posttest knowledge scores. In addition, the CAI group demonstrated a significant increase in attitudes scores. The authors found the correlation coefficient between knowledge and attitudes to be statistically significant but low.

Employees´ Trust in Managers in a Downsized Organisation2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Trust is important to establish a good relationship between employees and managers in an organization. For the modern organization, trust is important to be able to survive and be successful in the long run. We believe that the employees are the key players, which the organization relies on to create value and to be competitive in the market. The purpose of the dissertation was to find out, how the managers worked with the internal factors affecting trust during a downsizing process and to compare the findings with the employees’ level of trust in the managers. To be able to measure the level of trust, we created the COCR-model, which we used when we analysed the data from the survey. The result of the survey showed that the employees had some trust in the managers, and that the managers had worked actively with almost all internal factors that were measured in the COCR-model. Our conclusion is that there are external factors affecting employees’ trust in managers as well. These external factors could be one explanation why the employees in our case study had some trust in their managers, even when they had experienced a downsizing. According to us this is an irrational behaviour, which becomes rational only when the external factors are considered.

Evaluation of titanium implants placed into simulated extraction sockets: a study in dogs1999In: International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, ISSN 0882-2786, E-ISSN 1942-4434, Vol. 14, no 3, p. 351-360Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of gap width on bone healing around implants placed into simulated extraction socket defects of varying widths in 10 mongrel dogs. All premolars were removed and the alveolar ridges were reduced to a width of 7 mm. Nine weeks later, a total of 80 implants, 10 mm long by 3.3 mm wide, were placed into osteotomy sites prepared to 3 different diameters in the coronal half, simulating extraction sockets. Three experimental sites, with gap sizes of 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, and 1.4 mm, were created; the control sites had no gap. The depth of each defect was measured at the time of implant placement. All implants were stable at the time of placement. The dogs were euthanized 12 weeks after implant placement, and blocks containing the implants and adjacent bone were submitted for histologic evaluation. Clinically, all control and test sites healed, with complete bone fill in the defect. Percentages of bone-to-implant contact were measured histologically. As the gap widened, the amount of bone-to-implant contact decreased, and the point of the highest bone-to-implant contact shifted apically. These changes were statistically significant (P < .001). No statistically significant differences in bone-to-implant contact were found between the sites when the apical 4 mm of implants were compared. Within the limits of this study, the simulated extraction socket defects healed clinically, with complete bone fill, regardless of the initial gap size. However, the width of the gap at the time of implant placement had a significant impact on the histologic percentage and the height of bone-to-implant contact.

    Abstract [sv]

There are several ways to identify individuals with dry mouth, but there are few studies made in which the different methods have been compared with each other. The aim of this pilotstudy was to compare different methods for identifying individuals with dry mouth. Fifty individuals aged 50 to 75 years were included in this studie. These where randomly chosen among patients at the dental clinic at Kristianstad University College. Four different salivary measurements were conducted: 1) collection of unstimulated saliva, 2) collection of stimulated saliva, 3) the so called “mirrortest”, and 4) analyse using cottonrolls. The result showed a statistically significant correlation between collection of unstimulated saliva, collection of stimulated saliva and analyse with the help of cottonrolls. There were no statistically significant correlations between the mirrortest and any of the other tests. The statistical correlations between the tests were only obtained at high saivary secretion rates, as the studie had too few participants with low secretion rate to perform any comparisons between the methods at low secretion rates. There is a need for more research concerning standardization of the cottonroll method and to determine it’s values of low secretion rate. However, the overall feeling is that this method, if it’s preformed correctly and with a good scale, can be a suitably alternative for saliva measurments of people who has difficultys conducting the normal salivatests.

Är fyra år bättre än tre?: Hur påverkar akademisk bakgrund en revisors framtid?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

En hotad omvårdnad?: Sjuksköterskans arbete under hotbild2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cut your hair and get a job: A study of how Swedish employers see business graduates from an ambidexterity perspective2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Employability is a field of research and a concept that has developed considerably over the past century. Today, employability contributes to discussions in higher education, psychology and even labour market politics. What influences employability is thus of great importance to a number of stakeholders. Since employability consists of assets that make an individual employable, the employer’s perception of employability is essential. An area within organisational strategy called ambidexterity discusses the competitive advantage that can be obtained by hiring staff with certain characteristics, indicating that there could be a relation between ambidexterity and employability.

The purpose of this study is to explain how organisational ambidexterity influences employers’ preference in regards of employability. To do so, a conceptual model was developed from theoretical research. The model included: education, experience and personal characteristics. A questionnaire was used to collect data in order to explain the relation between ambidexterity and employability.

The findings of the study did not show that organisational ambidexterity influences employer preferences regarding employability considerably even though indications that a relation exists were found. Moreover, the study findings indicated that other factors such as gender and age of recruiter might have an influence on employer preferences instead.

    Abstract [en]

The original of this handbook is the Swedish Handbok i Sensorisk Analys, which was

an updated edition of an older sensory analysis handbook written by Birgit Lundgren

back in 1981. The handbook was revised in 2013 by Berit Albinsson, Karin Wendin

and Annika Åström. Both these handbooks were written at SIK – The Swedish Institute

of Food and Bioscience, which is now part of RISE – Research Institutes of Sweden.

The revised edition of the handbook has proved popular in both industry and in the

teaching world. At university level, it has been used by students as a complement to

the academic literature in sensory science programmes. There has been a growing demand

among international students at Swedish universities for the handbook to be

translated. In 2016, Kristianstad University entered into an agreement with the research

body RISE to translate the handbook into English. The translation was made

    by Patrick O’Malley.

The handbook was translated and printed with permission from the co-authors.

Musik som pedagogisk resurs i förskolans tidigare år2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cause related marketing: how does a cause-related marketing shape consumer perception, attitude and behaviour?2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

American Express initiated a new marketing strategy twenty-five years ago. Forevery new card user the company donated one cent for the recovery of the Statueof Liberty. The success of the campaign exceeds the expectations. This strategywhere a company declares to spend a defined amount of money for a special causein order to push up its sales is called Cause-Related Marketing. Now more andmore companies use the cause-related marketing strategy as a way out of saturatedmarkets and growing consumer awareness. Billions of dollars are spent every yearin cause campaigns.

Because it is a relatively new approach many researches has shown interest in thismarketing communication strategy. However, there is still lack in the field ofcause-related marketing and especially in the consumer part.

This is also the field of interest for this dissertation and in particular how doescause-relates marketing strategy shape consumer attitude, perception and buyingbehaviour? In order to find out the answer of this question we relied on differenttheories and in addition we conducted a questionnaire among international students.

The results, even though restricted trough the sample, showed that there is aconnection between the cause-related marketing and buying behaviour andattitude. Consumers are more likely to support companies which are engaged incause campaigns and tend to develop positive attitude toward this company and itsproducts. The research was limited to sample of students who took part in thequestionnaire. A further investigation in this field could deliver deeperinformation and be useful for companies and researchers in the field of marketingcommunication and marketing strategies.

Populärkulturens roll i förskolan: intervjuer med två pedagoger2012Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Emerging streams of intitutional theory in accounting research: current status and future directions2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

More than 30 years have passed since first calls to see accounting as social and institutional practice (Burchell et al., 1980; Hopwood, 1987; Hopwood & Miller, 1994). During these years, a significant number of theories have been striving to extend and challenge the hegemony of particular ways of seeing accounting (Jacobs, 2012) with acknowledging the need for inter-disciplinary approach and theoretical pluralism in contemporary studies. Within this theoretical pluralism, the institutional theory was recognized as one of the dominating theories in accounting research during last decades (Jacobs, 2012; Lounsbury, 2008; Modell, 2015).

However, despite acknowledging the paradigmatic developments of institutional theory into several streams in organisational science (DiMaggio, 1988; Lawrence et al., 2009, 2011; Oliver, 1991; Thornton et al., 2012), few attempts were done to make a separate review of these  streams and their value for accounting literature (Modell, 2009). Here, influential work of Lounsbury (2008) rather reflected organizational science literature with seeing accounting as a context which can give crucial insights into institutional and practice theories rather than vice versa. Jacobs (2012) in his study of theoretical pluralism in accounting research during 1992-2008 acknowledged the institutional theory domination but made few reflections on its progressions and implications for seeing accounting as social and institutional practice. And finally, more recent studies of Modell and his colleagues (Modell, 2015; Modell et al., 2017) made overviews of two streams of institutional theory (e.g. logic and work) and institutional theory combination possibility with other theories. While giving the valuable insights into understanding of issues related to theories combinations in accounting, these studies hardly review the accounting literature related to institutional theory streams which were criticised for apolitical nature but at the same time acknowledged as self-sufficient.

Therefore, it seems that current studies rather ignore or criticize specific institutional theory streams, jumping into possible theory combinations agenda without revealing the value of these streams for accounting research. Such tendency may potentially lead to marginalization of accounting knowledge (Jacobs, 2016; Jacobs & Cuganesan, 2014) with the use of these streams under the quest for contribution to the interdisciplinary literature.

In this regard, this paper aims to reflect upon the emerging streams of institutional theory, their application and influence on the accounting research of the last decade. Specifically, the paper’s ambition is to review and understand the role of institutional logics (IL), institutional entrepreneurship (IE) and institutional work (IW) in accounting research. These streams of institutional theory become increasingly valuable in accounting research for their explanatory capacities. But at the same time, but their application, especially in a combined form,  can also raise criticalities within theoretical pluralism agenda. Therefore, we construct our research questions as:

    • How have the emerging stream of institutional theory (IL, IE and IW) been used by accounting scholars?
    • How have these streams influenced accounting research?
    • What could be done in the future accounting research using emerging streams  of institutional theory?

In order to answer these research questions, we compile a structured literature review (Massaro et al., 2016) of articles published in scientific journals in the accounting field (levels 4 and 3 in ABS list). As a frame for analysis of the paper, we use conceptual clarification and analytical framework proposed by Lukka and Vinnari (2014) who made a distinction between domain theory and method theory in order to capture the relations between common knowledge about accounting as a social practice and the theories used to extend this knowledge. Applying to our paper, domain theory refers particularly to a set of knowledge about accounting as social and institutional practice. Method theory (i.e. IL, IE, IW) is a meta-level conceptual system, which can offer alternative perspectives and add new understanding/insights into domain theory. Following this analytical distinction, we examine the way how current accounting literature utilizes the selected institutional streams in domain-method dimension, how the theory or their combination (if any) are justified and used in a flow of argument for understanding of accounting practice.

Participatory budgeting as a form of dialogic accounting in Russia: actors' institutional work and reflexivity trap2018In: ACCOUNTING AUDITING & ACCOUNTABILITY JOURNAL, ISSN 0951-3574, Vol. 31, no 4, p. 1098-1123Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how participatory budgeting (PB), as a form of dialogic accounting, is produced in practice. Design/methodology/approach This is a qualitative case study of PB development for the period 2013-2016 in one Russian municipality. Based on triangulation of in-depth semi-structured interviews, documentary analysis, videotape data and netnographic observation, the authors employ ideas of dialogic accounting and institutional work. Findings The study shows that the PB experiment, which began with dialogic rhetoric, in reality, had very limited dialogic effects. However, the authors also observed that the PB dynamics over time made the practice neither inherently monologic nor dialogic. The authors explained such transformations by the way in which the individual reflexivity of actors altered when carrying out institutional work. Curiosity reflexivity was the most essential, triggering different patterns of institutional work to set up the PB experiment. However, further, the authors demonstrated that, over the course of the experiment's development, the institutional work was trapped by various actors' individual reflexivity forms and in this way limited PB's dialogic potential. Originality/value The study shows the importance of understanding and managing individuals' reflexivity, as it shapes the institutional work performed by different actors and, therefore, influences the direction of both the design and materialization of dialogic accounting experiments such as PB. In a broader sense, this also influences the way in which democratic governance is developed, losing democratization potential.

Boksamtal, fungerar det? Hur lärare använder boksamtal för att utveckla elevers läsförståelse.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bakom deras ryggar: En studie om intern kontroll2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

After the big scandals of the 21st century, internal control became a crucial role amongst most companies. According to previous research, strong internal control can protect companies from frauds, errors and mistakes. This study clarifies the variation in companies’ information concerning internal control. Furthermore, a quantitative method is used to successfully respond to this purpose and the information is composed from the annual reports of 235 listed companies in Sweden. This study has a theoretical framework that is based on previous research and several different theories. The theories that are used is legitimacy theory, agent theory, positive accounting theory and institutional theory. Consequently, based on this outline, five hypotheses are developed. Further, these hypotheses are tested using various statistical analyzes. The result of this study indicates that there are numerous of factors that may affect the company's information regarding internal control in the annual report. Conclusively, the study indicates that size, ownership structure and the application of the COSO framework affect the amount of disclosures in the company's annual reports. In addition, the study indicates that the quantity of information disclosed in the annual reports is not depended on the industry or audit firms used.

Kommunal samverkan - för kommuner i tiden: En fallstudie av Skåne Nordost2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Decoupling in the age of market-embedded morality: responsible gambling in a hybrid organization2017In: Journal of Management and Governance, ISSN 1385-3457, E-ISSN 1572-963X, Vol. 22, no 2, p. 285-313Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper contributes to the understanding of hybrid organizations by refining the concept of decoupling as a strategic response to conflicting objectives and institutional expectations (Meyer and Rowan in Am J Soc 83:340–363, 1977). In today’s popular responsibility discourse one notes a hopeful “win–win” ideal that invites attempts, by companies in particular, to realize and balance conflicting values and to strive to fulfil both profit objectives and responsibility objectives. Although institutional theory has long acknowledged the strategic response of decoupling in organizational contexts, the potential of exploring and refining how this concept may be used to analyse strategic responses in the contemporary era of market-embedded morality has yet to be explored (Shamir in Econ Soc 37:1–19, 2008). There are good reasons to do so as the present-day discourse on the relation between the economy and morality offers a new set of options and challenges for legitimately responding to institutional demands. This paper draws on an explanatory, rich ethnographic and longitudinal case study of a Swedish fully state-owned company operating in the post 1990s gambling market. We suggest that contemporary hybrid organizations positioned at the crossroads of bureaucratic and market schemes of organizing, may find themselves in a particularly tight spot and seek legitimacy by decoupling—not only by adopting certain legitimizing structures, but also and increasingly with reference to market-embedded morality, a commoditizing of responsibility in their contested market setting. Based on the case findings, we suggest a distinction between organization-based decoupling and market-based decoupling and propose that market-based decoupling may be attractive to hybrid organizations owing to it being less sensitive to scrutiny and accountability claims. But at the same time, our findings indicate that market-based decoupling poses a risk to hybrid organizations, as it does not offer the same degree of legitimacy with key stakeholders/the general public as organization-based decoupling does.

Återvändarna: en studie om problematisk skolfrånvaro och vägen tillbaka2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
