The Storyline approach: promoting learning through cooperation in the second language classroom2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the Storyline approach a fictive world is created in the classroom. Learners create and take on the role of characters in a story (lasting typically for four to six weeks), which develops as they work in small groups on practical and theoretical tasks linked to the curriculum. The approach offers conditions considered to promote second language development in young learners, namely an engaging, meaningful and motivational context in which communicative language skills are practised holistically. The word learners most commonly use to describe learning English through Storyline is `fun´; one aspect of the work which rates particularly highly is group collaboration. This presentation is based on a research study, Storyline, Our Sustainable Street, in which a class of Swedish 11-13 year olds created families who moved into a new street in a fictive English town. During the course of the Storyline the families took part in a project to live in a more sustainable way, and also had to deal with the problems of illegal rubbish dumping and anti-social neighbours. I will demonstrate how cooperative principles are integral to group tasks in Storyline and how, through cooperation, communicative language skills are developed.

The storyline approach in teacher education2016In: Lärarlärdom 2016: Högskolan Kristianstad / [ed] Claes Dahlqvist & Stefan Larsson, Högskolan Kristianstad: Kristianstad University Press , 2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

For many primary student teachers, English at school was characterized by a diet of textbooks, public teacher correction and peer ridicule. Such students approach English in teacher education with a lack of enthusiasm, even dread. If we are to produce competent, enthusiastic professionals, this must change. In English didactics, the objectives at Kristianstad University are 1) that students develop language proficiency and theoretical knowledge 2) understand how English can be taught creatively and be able to demonstrate this in practical and written assignments.

Classroom relationships are often said to lie at the heart of successful language learning (Stevick, 1980). One example of a relational pedagogy, which fosters cooperation and mutual support, is Storyline, in which a fictive world is created in the classroom. A story develops as learners, in small groups as characters in a story, work on a range of meaningful tasks, combining theoretical and aesthetic subjects. At Kristianstad University, student teachers work for two weeks intensively on a Storyline about families moving into a new street in a fictive English town, using English in different ways. At the same time, they analyse what they are learning and how. This has a number of benefits. By working with Storyline, as opposed to just reading about it, the students experience its pedagogical benefits, and not just for the teaching of English. At the same time, their proficiency develops, not least because they are working closely and intensively together on motivating tasks in a supportive classroom atmosphere.

Hattie (2009) contends that achievement is higher where there is enjoyment. Storyline helps to raise achievement levels because it engages affectively and cognitively, helps to forge closer classroom relationships and through practical work makes visible abstract content (for example, educational and linguistic theories), thus facilitating student learning, as this paper will demonstrate.

    Abstract [en]

In the Storyline approach a fictive world is created in the classroom. Working in small groups, the learners create characters to people a story, speaking and writing in role. The story develops as the learners work on open key questions, based on curriculum content and integrating linguistic and practical skills. A word often used by participants in a Storyline topic is `fun´. I investigated which features of the Storyline approach particularly appealed to a class of 11-13 year-olds who took part in Our Sustainable Street and what impact working in this way had on their learning of English This paper reports on that study, which concluded that the Storyline approach offers significant benefits for the development of communicative competence, and shows how Storyline can meet the requirements of the curriculum.

    Stories and storyline2015Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The role of stories is widely recognised in language teaching. Stories engage the imagination and expose the reader/listener to language patterns and to a rich array of vocabulary in context. Storyline shares these features. In the Storyline approach a fictive world is created in the classroom. Learners work in small groups over a period of typically four to six weeks as characters in a story. Working on open key questions, which drive the story and which carry the curriculum content, learners use and develop their language skills within a meaningful context. And they have fun! This book is about the power of story to engage and motivate, leading to effective learning: a programme of work based on stories and Storyline is truly learning-centred, allowing the teacher to adapt the level of the task to suit an individual learner's needs, enabling a sense of progress in the learner, enhanced motivation and continued learning. The book combines a wealth of practical ideas related to teaching with stories and Storyline, and at the same time also inspires teachers to undertake small scale explorations in their own classrooms. It is unique in its uncompromising attention to making links between everyday classroom practice, underlying theory and research opportunities that every teacher can take advantage of.

"Det ska löna sig att plugga": En studie av lärares uppfattningar om vad en mer differentierad betygsskala innebär2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Implementation of knowledge-based palliative care in nursing homes and pre-post post evaluation by cross-over design: a study protocol2018In: BMC Palliative Care, ISSN 1472-684X, E-ISSN 1472-684X, Vol. 17, no 1, article id 52Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: The demography of the world is changing as the population is ageing. Because of this change to a higher proportion of older people, the WHO has called for improved palliative care for older persons. A large number of all deaths in the industrialised world occur while older people are living in nursing homes and therefore a key question becomes how the principles of palliative care can be implemented in that context. The aims of this study are: a) to describe a model of an educational intervention with the goal of implementing knowledge-based palliative care in nursing homes, and b) to describe the design of the evaluation of the effectiveness regarding the implementation of knowledge-based palliative care.

METHODS/DESIGN: A complex intervention is evaluated by means of a cross-over design. An educational intervention concerning palliative care consisting of five seminars during 6 months for staff and managers has been developed and conducted in 20 nursing homes in two counties. Before the intervention started, the feasibility was tested in a pilot study conducted in nursing homes not included in the main study. The intervention is evaluated through a non-randomized experimental design with intervention and control groups and pre- and post-assessments. The evaluation includes older persons living in nursing homes, next-of-kin, staff and managers. Data collection consists of quantitative methods such as questionnaires and register data and qualitative methods in the form of individual interviews, focus-group interviews and participant observations.

DISCUSSION: The research will contribute to new knowledge about how to implement knowledge-based palliative care in a nursing home setting. A strength of this project is that the Medical Research Council framework of complex intervention is applied. The four recommended stages, Development, Feasibility and piloting, Evaluation and Implementation, are combined for the educational intervention, which functions as a strategy to achieve knowledge-based palliative care in the nursing homes. Implementation is always a question of change and a good theoretical understanding is needed for drawing valid conclusions about the causal mechanisms of change. The topic is highly relevant considering the world's ageing population. The data collection is completed and the analysis is ongoing.

Den hälsosamma kosten: uppfattningar, resonemang och livsmedelsval2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Most consumers today are very health conscious and wish to eat a healthy diet, but they are faced with several problems in their everyday lives. Food and product choices can be about taking a stance and showing your identity, whether that is as a price conscious or environmentally conscious customer. As such many factors are in play when the consumer decides what a healthy diet is. The choice of diet and food thus becomes a complex everyday challenge. This is influenced by the debate around food and health in what is termed the mass media. The purpose of the study was to show how a sample of Swedish consumers percieve a healthy diet, the relation of said perception to comming nutrition reccommendations and the consumers’ views of diet and health. The study used semi-structured interviews as well as a web-based food frequency questionnaire with fourhundred respondents. Interviews centered on concepts of healthy diet and unhealthy diet, as well as the meaning of words frequently used in the debate around diet and health in mass media. The consumer’s view of a healthy diet mainly coincides with Swedish Nutritional Recommendations from 2004 and the proposal for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations from June, 2012. There are differences in the opinions of male and female subjects between self-estimated food consumption, the view of what a healthy diet should look like and on how often the defined food items should be consumed. A higher frequency of consumption of food items that the proposal for the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations have recommended be reduced, such as sausages, snacks and sweets was more acceptable to men than to women. Women’s perception of a healthy diet included a higher frequency of consumption of food items that the proposal for the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations have recommended be increased, such as fruits, berries and vegetables. Over all, the subjects were well informed and knowledgeable about what constitutes a healthy diet.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Previous financial crises have resulted in a greater focus on bank’s risk taking. The crises have shown how the bank’s instability may create a devastating effect on the global market, which has given rise to several studies focus on bank’s risk. Bank’s attitude towards risk taking can be explained by its ownership structure where the owners may have different risk preferences.

Research studies have found a relationship between the concentration of ownership and bank risk, but without any consensus on the sign of the relationship. The purpose of this study is to investigate how ownership concentration affects bank’s default risk. The study has been performed on banks within the EU countries. Furthermore, the nature of the bank’s largest shareholders has been taken into consideration to distinguish whether they have an impact on the relationship between ownership concentration and risk. In addition, six hypotheses were formulated which aim to investigate the relationship between ownership concentration, agency costs and the default risk, based on the agency theory and theories on corporate governance. For this study’s survey a quantitative method has been used in conjunction with a deductive approach.

Our findings show that there exists a relationship between ownership concentration and bank risk. More specifically, our study shows that the relationship is different depending on the nature of the owner. For some types of owners, we have identified a positive relationship between ownership concentration and bank’s default risk, while for other types of owners we have instead identified a negative relationship. Finally, this study shows that agency costs are greater when shareholders perform a lower degree of monitoring of the management.

Vilka faktorer förekommer, och hur utförligt beskrivna är de, i kommuners beslutunderlag vid fastställande av VA-taxan?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose:

The aim of this study is to analyse the factors that occur in decision-making purposes in the determination of VA-fee and the detailed description of what these are. This is to give a fully recognition of the basis for decision data that is based on the municipalities in Sweden.

    Method:

Inferring the hermeneutic philosophy probably a greater understanding realized when we test the knowledge gained by conducting a pilot study. This means that during the course of the study we moved between theory and empirical data, and obtained an adbuctive reaearch approach.

    Theory:

The study is based on previous research in the area that has been used to identify our traditional and non-traditional factors.

    Empiric:

The data collection method we have used is a semit-structured depth interview based on five different municipal water and sewage operations, all traditional forms.

    Analysis:

We performed a comprehensive analysis to identify differences and similarities between the municipalities and the existence of the factors. All municipalities are taking account of traditional factors when they occur but it varies between the non-traditional factors, and its occurrence.

Faktorer som påverkar hur patienter med lungcancer upplever sin smärta och mötet med sjuksköterskan2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Lung cancer is the fifth most common form of cancer and a cancer-related cause of death in Sweden. The majority of patients suffering from lung cancer are around 70 years old, barely a hundred people each year become ill before the age of 50 years. Purpose: To describe the factors that affect how patients with lung cancer experience their pain and the contact with the nurse. Method:  A systematic literature study was conducted in which both qualitative and quantitative articles were reviewed. Conclusion: The result showed that pain perception and the meeting with the nurse is individual and depends on many factors. The physical and mental pain went together and influenced each other. Patients felt that nurses' lack of time, could create misunderstandings, meaning that they could receive inadequate information and that their pain could be underestimated. Discussion: The results were discussed based on Travelbees nursing theory. The nurse should see the patient as an individual and treat his pain with respect, giving him the time, the understanding and the information he needs.

Aktievärdering: aktievärderingsmodeller och dess tillämpning vid privatplacering2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background The stocksaving has during the last century increased and become more popular in Sweden and during the last 20 years the number of Swedes who save in stocks has more than doubled. While the interest in stocksaving has increased so has the interest in private saving. Today there is a group of people who live of the income which is generated from the stockmarket, they are called “Daytraders” and they do “Daytrading”.  They constantly observe the stockmarket and act as soon as new information that can affect the stockrate is revealed. And then there is also a group which makes purchases a few times a week or more seldom.

The valuationmodels have through time changed and there are several models to choose from. The models are built by many complex assumptions that can affect the outcome of the valuation.

Purpose The purpose of this essay is to examine which of the theoretical stockvaluationmodels are used in private saving, and to find the reasons for the choice of model. In cases when the stockvaluationmodels are not used as a main valuationmodel a part of the purpose is also to find other factors that can affect the outcome of the valuation.

Method Based on the purpose the choice was made to use a qualitative method with personal interviews as a tool. The choice of method and tool was based on that depth information was needed to fulfill the purpose. My examination comprises five persons who do private saving in stocks. Their activity on the stockmarket varies, meaning that some buy more frequently and some more seldom.

Result The result of my examination shows that several of the theoretical stockvaluationmodels are not used in private saving, there are only two models that the privatesavers actually use. There are mainly three arguments to why the theoretical stockvaluationmodels are not used in private saving. The first argument is that the responders consider several models not to be motivating, they are not relevant. The second argument is that some of the models are considered to complicated and the third argument is that in many cases there is a lack of useable data.

Förskollärares uppfattningar av fenomenet fysik som innehåll i förskolans verksamhet2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Uppfattningar av specialpedagogens roll i skolan2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Intervjuerna spelades in via Iphone.

Assessing sensory properties of the early modern medicine “Elixir amarum Hiaernei”2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

We are reworking the early modern medicine with focus on products, today known as Swedish Bitters or similar names, and historically as “Elixir amarum Hiaernei”. The history of the recipe dates back at least to mid-18th century. It was probably one of the Hiaerne-brothers, Ulrik Leonhard (1712-1758) or Christian Henric (1709-1794), who invented this universal medication. From a number of Linnaeus sources from later 18th century it is well known that odor, flavor and taste were used to assess pharmacological potential of medicinal herbals.

The purpose of this study was to assess ingredients of “Elixir amarum Hiaernei” from a sensory perspective.

    Methods

The ingredients in “Elixir amarum Hiaernei” according to the 18th century recipes: agarikon, aloe, gentian, myrrh, rhubarb, saffron, Theriac Andromachalis, zedoary together with alcohol and sugar.

These ingredients were assessed by a trained sensory panel using a slightly modified version of the Flavor Profile Method®. Each ingredient was evaluated with respect to odor, taste and flavor.

    Results

All ingredients were intense in taste, flavor and odor. The ingredients could be described due to its sensory characteristics, in which they differed largely. However, they had in common that they were high in bitterness.

    Discussion

The ingredients of this historic medication had intense tastes, flavors and odors in line with historical sources. It points for example out that the senses, especially olfaction, was of high importance for the apothecary during the 18th century. In order to find the right blend of ingredients the sensory profiles were of highest importance, both ingredients and blended medication were valuated due to this by physicians as well as patients. Sensory evaluation was also of major importance in the quality assessment of medical herbals by the early modern apothecary.

Sensory profiles of the medical ingredients will be presented at the Eurosense symposium.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In light of four welfare principles are family centres analyzed as they emerge in Sociomedical Journals special issue on family centers. The principles are: 1. welfare as a social compensatory 2. welfare as a social guarantee 3. welfare as social services, and 4. welfare as social investment. The question is whether and how they compete for attention and what impact it may have. The results shows that three of the four welfare principles appear as complementary in the vision of family centres while they appear as being in conflict when the texts are dealing with professionals everyday work. The organizational form, the form of family centres, seems to help the professionals in their dealing with conflicts between different principles in some types of work situations.

    Abstract [sv]

Quality driven teacher work: reflection on a concept2014In: NWLC 2014: Sessions and download of paper, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the concept of Quality driven teacher work and its usefulness. The concept is discussed from four different perspectives: 1) the teachers’ and school leaders' views; 2) the dominating quality discourse; 3) teachers' discretionary work; 4) by using results from sub‐studies in an ongoing research project. The concept helps focusing on teachers’ discretionary work and highlights new time‐consuming tasks that threaten the quality of teaching. This is consistent with new research that shows that professional work is changing. Professionalism is more conceptually framed as a matter of technical proficiency. Teachers must be able to follow guidelines from predefined cases in detail. Being skilled becomes a question of being update on laws, rules, guidelines, and obligation to do documentary work in different quality systems. Skill then is less a question on being competent within a knowledge field from where they analyzed and make discretionary judgments. The concept of Quality driven teacher work highlights teachers day to day work to improve quality in their lessons. In conclusion the concept helps visualizing daily work of teachers’ attempts in transforming plans, policies and strategies into good teaching practices. Furthermore it helps to highlight the competition from other work task some of them connected with the new technical proficiency professionalism.
