A study on ESL writing anxiety among Chinese English majors: Causes, effects and coping strategies for ESL writing anxiety2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 60 credits / 90 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to measure the level of ESL writing anxiety experienced by Chinese English majors. The effects of ESL writing anxiety on English writing performance, the students’ perception of the main causes of ESL writing anxiety and their learning style preferences in ESL writing class were also examined, which provided pedagogical implications of successful learning and teaching strategies for reducing ESL writing anxiety. This study was based on quantitative research and three questionnaires were used to collect data. The results of the SLWAI showed that there is a high level of ESL writing anxiety among Chinese English majors, and the Cognitive Anxiety is the most common type of ESL writing anxiety. The differences in the level of English writing anxiety between the groups of freshmen and sophomores reached the level of statistical significance. The sophomores were found to suffer significantly higher levels of English writing anxiety than the freshmen. Correlation analysis results suggested a negative relationship between measure of ESL writing anxiety and measures of writing performance (course grade and timed writing grade). An in-depth analysis of the causes of ESL writing anxiety revealed that linguistic difficulties, insufficient writing practice, fear of tests (TEM), lack of topical knowledge and low self-confidence in writing performance constitute the main sources of ESL writing anxiety experienced by Chinese English majors. Furthermore, suggestions on learning and teaching strategies for reducing ESL writing anxiety were provided on the basis of the acknowledge of sources of ESL writing anxiety and students’ learning style preferences in ESL writing class.

Understanding the characteristics of cellular data traffic2012In: CellNet 2012 / [ed] Li Erran Li och Morley Mao Zhuoqing, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Because of rapidly growing subscriber populations, advances in cellular communication technology, increasingly capable user terminals, and the expanding range of mobile applications, cellular networks have experienced a significant increase in data traffic, the dominant part of which is carried by the http protocol. Understanding the characteristics of this traffic is important for network design, traffic modeling, resource planning and network control. In this study we present a comprehensive characterization study of mobile http-based traffic using packet level traces collected in a large cellular network. We analyze the traffic using metrics at packet level, flow level and session level. For each metric, we conduct a comparison between traffic from different applications, as well as comparison to traffic in a wired network. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for better resource utilization in cellular infrastructures.

Understanding HTTP flow rates in cellular networks2014In: Networking 2014 / [ed] Bjarne Helvik, Deep Medhi och Bin Liu, IFIP , 2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Data traffic in cellular networks increased tremendously over the past few years and this growth is predicted to continue over the next few years. Due to differences in access technology and user behavior, the characteristics of cellular traffic can differ from existing results for wireline traffic. In this study we focus on understanding the flow rates and on the relationship between the rates and other flow properties by analyzing packet level traces collected in a large cellular network. To understand the limiting factors of the flow rates, we further analyze the underlying causes behind the observed rates, e.g.,network congestion, access link or end host configuration. Our study extends other related work by conducting the analysis from a unique dimension, the comparison with traffic in wired networks, to reveal the unique properties of cellular traffic. We find that they differ in variability and in the dominant rate limiting factors.

    Abstract [en]

Title: Explaining the Growth of an Industrial Cluster

    - Theories Tested on the Ningbo Die & Mould Cluster

    Authors: David, Eagle & Chris

Purposes: The aim of our dissertation is to find an applicable theoretical framework that could explain the growth of the Ningbo Die & Mould Industrial Cluster. The theoretical framework is also expected to be applicable in the Ningbo Endogenous Industrial Clusters.

Theoretical framework: Mainly based on Porter Diamond Model, supplemented by other relevant models and our working experience, we have set up our own theoretical model, in which a factor hierarchy with five category factors and 29 sub-factors was structured. Meanwhile, a specific cluster, the Ningbo Die & Mould Cluster, was selected to conduct the survey of questionnaires. The different managers of the enterprises were chosen as respondents and we tried to test the validity of our own theoretical model.

Results: The collected data from the survey was analyzed through the SPSS program, we adopted Factor Analysis, Descriptive Statistics, Correlation Analysis to draw conclusions. The findings of our dissertation suggest the local government should put more emphases on different factors in the course of clusters’ growth.

Key words: Porter Diamond Model Double Diamond Model Nine-Factor Model Factor The Ningbo Die & Mould Cluster Correlation Analysis

The Use of Vocabulary Learning Strategies by Good and Poor Language Learners: A case study of Chinese non-English major sophmores2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The use of vocabulary learning strategies is one crucial factor that affects the success of foreign vocabulary acquisition. This case study investigated a group of Chinese sophmores’ employment of learning strategies in their learning process in order to identify the most frequently used strategies and the least frequently used strategies, and compared good language learners with poor learners. A 26-item five-scale point questionnaire was employed for data collection. Through careful calculation and detailed discussion, it was found that both good and poor language learners used many effective strategies for vocabulary learning. This group of students were found that they tended to carry a pocket dictionary to look up new words while they were least likely to look up new words in an English-English dictionary. Good language learner were found to employ learning strategies more frequently than poor leaners in 21 strategies, which revealed that vocabulary learning strategies were positively related to learning outcomes.

Web site & customer value: from a marketing perspective2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this dissertation is to find the key factors of web site which influence customer value. Through literature review, we find the role of web site from a marketing perspective is a medium of marketing, enhancing the marketing mix and endowing the marketing mix with new features; we also find that customer value is a comparison of benefit and cost, having both psychic value and utility value and covering the whole customer activity. On base of these, we identify eight factors of web site which, we hypothesize, influence customer value: Attractiveness, Ease of use, Accuracy, Customization, Responsiveness, Community, Comparison and Assurance. Then a survey with questionnaire method was employed. As to the design and analysis of the questionnaire, the Kano model was used. The result of our survey showed that seven factors of web site - Assurance, Ease of use, Accuracy, Responsiveness, Customization, Attractiveness and Comparison, have positive influence to customer value while Factor of Community, has little influence to customer value. In addition, we introduced Importance index and Indifference index to evaluate influence during analyzing; under this way, we proved the validity and reliability of our investigation.

Learning how to Learn: a study of English vocabulary learning strategies among English major students at a Chinese university2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on the study of the strategy use of Chinese English majors in vocabulary learning; the individual differences between effective and less effective learners in employing vocabulary learning strategies and the relationship between their strategies and their outcome in English learning. In this research, 118 junior English majors inChineseUniversitywere investigated. The participants were asked to take a vocabulary test and complete a vocabulary-learning questionnaire.

The data collected was analyzed using the SPSS (the Statistical Package for Social Science) and the result indicates that there are significant differences between effective and less effective learners. Effective learners use strategies more frequently and flexibly, while less effective learners turn out to be rote learners. They employ repetition strategy more often and they rely more on their mother tongue, Chinese, in vocabulary learning. Thus the translation strategy was extensively used among them. The result also shows that seven strategies, namely applied, categorization, self-monitoring, cooperation, media, elaboration and dictionary strategy are positively correlated with the vocabulary test scores and the Test for English Majors (Grade 4) scores. The above findings have certain implication for both learners and teachers.

Comparison of Performance and Power Consumption Between GPS and Sigfox Positioning Using Pycom Modules2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sigfox is one of the newly-emerging LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technologies aiming to provide power-efficient solutions to the world of IoT. This study presents a comparison between Sigfox Geolocation and GPS (Global Positioning System) in terms of power consumption and performance which includes three metrics: accuracy and precision, response rate and response time. This study includes for the first part a series of lab tests where Sigfox Geolocation and GPS were studied in a single Sleep, Wake up, Idle, Tx/Rx cycle. For the second part, field tests with different geographical parameters (altitude, population, mobility) were conducted. Results of lab tests show that power consumption difference between Sigfox and GPS is a linear function of Idle time. In field tests, GPS presents a far superior performance than Sigfox in all metrics and marginally better power efficiency for relatively short Idle interval. For both GPS and Sigfox, a correlation between power efficiency and performance was observed. Results show that GPS operates best in rural environments while Sigfox stands out in urban ones. Payload size was observed to affect Sigfox in both power consumption and performance while different transmission rates only affect power consumption but do not seem to impact the other metrics. A solution based on the outcome of this study is suggested for a freight-monitoring system where geolocation is handled by GPS and the coordinates transmitted via Sigfox. As an emerging technology under constant development, Sigfox Geolocation is expected to have improved performance in the near future.

IELTS Preparation Courses in China: the Reading Comprehension Task2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

More and more private language schools provide IELTS preparation courses for candidates who want to sit the test for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English-speaking countries. This essay investigates whether the IELTS preparation course in a language school in China offers an adequate preparation for candidates. The study focuses on one preparation course for the IELTS reading test (other modules are beyond the scope of the present study). A questionnaire and interview questions concerning both the IELTS reading test and the preparation course were given to 20 candidates and two teachers by e-mail.This study first analyzed the reading skills tested in the IELTS reading test and discussed possible test difficulties. It then investigated the IELTS reading preparation course by means of candidate feedback on course expectations, course structure, teaching materials and teaching methods. The feedback shows that the course fulfilled the candidates’ expectations, i.e. it taught them useful test-taking techniques and reading skills. The teachers’ responses indicate that the course achieved its objective to familiarize candidates with the IELTS reading test. The study results demonstrate that the preparation course is test-based, teaching candidates IELTS test-taking strategies, which effectively prepare candidates for the IELTS test. Candidates and teachers also offered suggestions for future course improvement.

Automated Supply-Chain Quality Inspection Using Image Analysis and Machine Learning2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

An image processing method for automatic quality assurance of Ericsson products is developed. The method consists of taking an image of the product, extract the product labels from the image, OCR the product numbers and make a database lookup to match the mounted product with the customer specification. The engineering innovation of the method developed in this report is that the OCR is performed using machine learning techniques. It is shown that machine learning can produce results that are on par or better than baseline OCR methods. The advantage with a machine learning based approach is that the associated neural network can be trained for the specific input images from the Ericsson factory. Imperfections in the image quality and varying type fonts etc. can be handled by properly training the net, a task that would have been very difficult with legacy OCR algorithms where poor OCR results typically need to be mitigated by improving the input image quality rather than changing the algorithm.

The break remains: elderly people's experiences of a hip fracture 1 year after discharge2010In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 32, no 2, p. 103-113Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. To explore experienced long-term consequences of a hip fracture and conceptions of what influences hip fracture recovery among community-living elderly people 1 year after discharge. Method. Fifteen subjects (13 females and 2 males), aged 66-94, were interviewed. The phenomenographic method was used for analysis. Results. Experiences of insecurity and restricted life dominated the interviews. The descriptive categories within experienced consequences of a hip fracture were: (1) isolated life with more restricted activity and fewer social contacts, with the two sub-categories (a) more insecure and afraid and (b) more limited ability to move, (2) disappointed and sad that identity and life have changed and (3) satisfied with the situation or feeling even better than before the fracture. The categories within conceptions of what influences hip fracture recovery were: (4) own mind and actions influence recovery, (5) treatment and actions from others influence recovery and (6) you cannot influence recovery. Conclusion. The findings accentuate that the negative consequences of a hip fracture are substantial and long-lasting. As it strikes mostly elderly people, who may have experienced earlier losses and growing disabilities, a hip fracture could add to the risk of losing important life values. Furthermore, the findings indicate that all health care professionals who meet the patients need to consider the patients' own experiences and possible fear and not merely focus on the physical injury and disabilities.

A life-breaking event: early experiences of the consequences of a hip fracture for elderly people2008In: Clinical Rehabilitation, ISSN 0269-2155, E-ISSN 1477-0873, Vol. 22, no 9, p. 801-811Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To explore and describe the consequences of an acute hip fracture as experienced by home-dwelling elderly people shortly after discharge from hospital.Design: Semi-structured interviews using the phenomenographic method.Subjects and setting: Eighteen subjects were interviewed in their own homes one month after discharge. Results: The interviewees described experiences of changes in their relation to the body, themselves, to others and to their whole life situation. These experiences were described as being limited in movement, having lost confidence in the body, becoming humble and grateful, respecting oneself and one's own needs, becoming more dependent on others, gaining more human contact and being treated in a friendly way by others, being secluded and trapped at home, feeling old, closer to death and having lost their zest for life, and taking one day at a time and being uncertain about the future. Conclusion: Experienced consequences of a hip fracture were multidimensional and involved dramatic changes in the interviewees' life situation, including existential thoughts and reappraisal of the years of life that remained. The results indicate that the fracture seemed not only to break the bone but also to cause social and existential cracks, as experienced in the early phase after the injury.

Validering av turbidimetrisk metod för koncentrationsbestämning av albumin i cerebrospinalvätska2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sömnvanor bland patienter på sjukhus2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Sleep is the most important human recovery process and research supports assumptions that sleep is an important component in the healing process. Lack of sleep can be the onset of certain diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Sleep is an integral part of basic nursing. It is important for nurses in hospitals to form a correct understanding of the patients’ sleep since they among other things are responsible for administering ad lib hypnotic medication. Aim: To examine the sleep habits of inpatients in two hospitals in southern Sweden, and to compare these with the patients’ sleeping habits in the home a month before hospitalization. Method: Statistical analysis of a part of a Point Prevalence Study among inpatients in southern Sweden. Results: Patients in hospitals reported that they had slept poorly and had lower sleep quality than at home. Forty percent experienced sleep during hospitalization as poor or very poor. The use of hypnotics was significantly higher in-hospital than at home, and the increase was gender related. Conclusion: The study supports previous findings with respect to sleep disturbances, but also with respect to how nurses relate to sleep and sleep disturbances in patients. A thorough self-reflection is stipulated as a way to pass the symbolic barrier to the implementation of existing knowledge.

Nervledningsstudie av suralisnerven och dess anatomiska variation2015Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Understanding communicative intentions and semiotic vehicles by children and chimpanzees2013In: Cognitive development, ISSN 0885-2014, E-ISSN 1879-226X, Vol. 28, no 3, p. 312-329Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Developmental and comparative studies of the ability to understand communicative intentions using object-choice tasks raise questions concerning the semiotic properties of the communicative signals, and the roles of rearing histories, language and familiarity. We adapted a study by Tomasello, Call, and Gluckman (1997), in which a “helper” indicated the location of a hidden reward to children of three ages (18, 24, and 30 months) and to four chimpanzees, by means of one of four cues: Pointing, Marker, Picture and Replica. For the chimpanzees, we controlled for familiarity by using two helpers, one unfamiliar and one highly familiar. Even 18-months performed well on Pointing and Marker, while only the oldest group clearly succeeded with Picture and Replica. Performance did not correlate with scores for the Swedish Early Communicative Development Inventory (SECDI). While there were no positive results for the chimpanzees on the group level, and no effect of familiarity, two chimpanzees succeeded on Pointing and Marker. Results support proposals of a species difference in understanding communicative intentions, but also highlight the need to distinguish these from the complexity of semiotic vehicles and to consider both factors.

Steroid hormone determination in water using an environmentally friendly membrane based extraction technique2008In: Journal of Chromatography A, ISSN 0021-9673, E-ISSN 1873-3778, Vol. 1192, no 1, p. 1-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, a method was developed for determination of steroid hormones (17beta-estradiol, estrone, 17alpha-ethynylestradiol) in tap and sewage water samples from Sweden. Sample preparation and analysis were performed by a hollow-fibre microporous membrane liquid-liquid extraction (HF-MMLLE) set-up combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In this approach, only the organic liquid in the lumen (10microL) of the hollow-fibre membrane was utilised for depleting extraction. Several parameters were studied, including: type of organic solvent, sample pH, salt and humic acid content. The optimised method allowed the determination of the analyte at the low ngL(-1) level in tap and sewage water. A linear plot gave correlation coefficients better than 0.995 and resulted in a method limit of detection of 1.6, 3 and 10ngL(-1) for 17beta-estradiol, estrone, and 17alpha-ethynylestradiol, respectively, in sewage water. Enrichment factors were over 1400 after derivatisation. The repeatabilities at 50 and 600ngL(-1) were better than 10% and 6%, respectively.

Occurrence and removal of pharmaceuticals in a municipal sewage treatment system in the south of Sweden2009In: Science of the Total Environment, ISSN 0048-9697, E-ISSN 1879-1026, Vol. 407, no 8, p. 2760-2770Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The occurrence and removal rate of seven pharmaceuticals (ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, fluoxetine, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin), two metabolites (norfluoxetine, clofibric acid), one degradation product (4-isobutylacetophenone) and 3 estrogens (17alpha-ethinylestradiol, 17beta-estradiol, estrone) were studied in the inlet and outlet of a tertiary sewage treatment plant (STP) in Sweden as well as between different treatment steps in the STP which includes a conventional activated sludge step. Pharmaceuticals in raw household and raw hospital sewage streams leading to the STP were as well investigated. Hydraulic retention times (HRT) of each treatment step was considered for sampling and for the calculation of the removal rates. These rates were above 90%, except for diclofenac, clofibric acid, estrone and ofloxacin. However, only diclofenac and naproxen showed significant effluent loads (>145 mg/d/1000 inh). Diclofenac was not eliminated during the treatment and in fact even higher concentrations were found at the effluent than in the inlet of the STP. 17alpha-Ethinylestradiol was not detected in any of the samples. Results indicate that a STP such as the one in Kristianstad, Sweden, with a tertiary treatment is sufficient to remove significantly most of the investigated pharmaceuticals. The chemical treatment improved the removal of several pharmaceuticals especially the antibiotics, which showed step removal rates between 55 and 70%. The expected concentration levels of the pharmaceuticals in the surface water (dilution 1 to 10) close to the outlet of the STP are below the no-observed effect-concentration (NOEC). However, despite that this would imply no important effects in the aquatic environment one cannot rule out negative consequences nearby the STP because most of the NOEC values are derived from acute toxicity data. This may underestimate the real impact of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic ecosystem.

Hollow-fibre supported liquid membrane extraction for determination of fluoxetine and norfluoxetine concentration at ultra trace level in sewage samples2007In: Journal of Separation Science, ISSN 1615-9306, E-ISSN 1615-9314, Vol. 30, no 15, p. 2513-2521Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, a method was developed for determining the concentration of the pharmaceutical fluoxetine and its metabolite, norfluoxetine, in sewage water samples. Sample preparation was performed by hollow-fibre supported liquid membrane (HF-SLM) extraction with final analysis using liquid chromatography with UV detection. Several parameters were studied including type of organic solvent, sample and acceptor pH, and salt and humic acid content. The optimised method allowed determination of the analyte at the ng/L level in sewage water. A linear plot gave a correlation coefficient better than 0.991 for both analytes and resulted in limits of detection in sewage water of 11 and 12 ng/L, for fluoxetine and norfluoxetine, respectively. The enrichment factor was over 1700 for both analytes in sewage water. The repeatability and reproducibility were better than 8% and 17%, respectively. The developed methodology was used to study daily variations of fluoxetine and norfluoxetine in municipal sewage streams. Norfluoxetine has been detected for the first time in sewage water and a preliminary analysis gave average concentrations of 150 and 225 ng/L for norfluoxetine and fluoxetine, respectively.

Effects of Plantago major L. leaf extracts on oral epithelial cells in a scratch assay2012In: Journal of Ethnopharmacology, ISSN 0378-8741, E-ISSN 1872-7573, Vol. 141, no 3, p. 825-830Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim of study The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects from different leaf extracts of the traditional medicinal herb Plantago major L. (plantain) on cell proliferation and migration in vitro, as a test for potential wound healing properties. Materials and methods Water and ethanol-based extracts were prepared from Plantago major fresh and dried leaves, and tested in vitro in a scratch assay with oral epithelial cells. Results The scratch assay produced reliable results after 18 h. Most of the tested extracts increased the proliferation/migration of the oral epithelial cells compared to the negative control. A concentration of 1.0 mg/mL (on dry weight basis) appears to be optimal regardless of type of extract, and among the alternatives, 0.1 mg/mL was always better than 10 mg/mL. Ethanol-based extracts with a concentration of 10 mg/mL had very detrimental effects on cell proliferation/migration. At the other two concentrations, ethanol-based extracts had the most beneficial effect, followed by water extracts of fresh leaves, ethanol plus water extracts of dried leaves and, finally, water extracts of dried leaves. This study suggests that both the water extracts and the more polyphenol-rich ethanol-based extracts of Plantago major leaves have medicinal properties. Further research is, however, needed to determine what compounds are responsible for the wound healing effects.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Barn och stress: förskollärares tankar kring stress hos barn i förskolan2014Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

During the last decades the consciousness regarding sustainable development has grown. As a part of this growing consciousness some companies choose to implement sustainability work into their corporations. The companies that choose to do this can also report their sustainability work in a Sustainability report. But as well as with financial information there is an uncertainty regarding the reliability in the information, which could be fixed if the companies would let the sustainability report be assured by an independent third party. The assurance of sustainability reports are not as regulated as for the financial information, this is shown in that the assurance is voluntary and that there are different types of assurance providers.

The purpose of this study was to see if certain factors influence companies concerning assurance of sustainability reports and concerning the type of assurance provider chosen. Do to the purpose of the study a quantative method was chosen, in which the data was collected through documents such as sustainability reports and annual reports from 2013.

The data that was collected was then analyzed and tested in relations to the formed hypothesis regarding the corporate factors; profitability, size, use of GRI and industry. Corporate factors in companies that had assured their sustainability reports were; low profitability, a high number of employees, high number in sales and high number in total assets. The same factors were found in the companies that had chosen an auditor as assurance provider. Regarding the industries, it was not companies in social-and environmental industries that assured their sustainability reports but those industries did choose to hire an auditor as the assuranceprovider.

Since similar studies regarding companies on Stockholmsbörsen are scarce, this study may contribute to further knowledge concerning assurance of sustainability reports for these companies.

    Abstract [en]

Explanatory pictures and models are frequently used in teaching and learning situations. However, it seems to be simply assumed that they are always beneficial. In this article results from an investigation with 16 Swedish pupils aged 7–9 year are presented based on an analysis that has examined how well this assumption holds up. Concepts from multi-modal theory have been used to investigate how young learners deal with illustrations and text from an early reader booklet about composting domestic refuse. The analysis suggests that expectations that illustrations facilitate the meaning-making of young pupils may be exaggerated. Although the booklet claimed to provide interactive support between image and text most of the examples show pupils ignoring pictures or misinterpreting vital information about composting in both the verbal and non-verbal material. The illustrations did not compensate for the most crucial deficiencies in the written text.

    Abstract [en]

Teaching and learning situations nowadays typically build on richly illustrated material or multimodal presentations. Under these circumstances, the transparency of images and models used for explaining various phenomena becomes central. The present study deals with 20 Swedish children, 9–12 years old, discussing an illustration meant to show the cause of the different appearances of the Moon in the sky. The students’ task was to place eight numbered moon phases in the lunar orbit in the image. The illustration in question was chosen (a) because it was of a kind frequently used to explain the lunar phases and (b) because the phenomenon is known to be difficult to understand for students of all ages. The analysis leans on historical and sociocultural approaches as well as on multimodal semiotics. The results show that a majority of students were able to make sense of the most central features of the illustration but that very few spontaneously reasoned in a way that could be interpreted as the intended meaning-making of the cause of the lunar phases. The results also indicate that the simultaneous adoption of two perspectives necessary for understanding the phenomenon was a stumbling block for most of the students.

What lies behind graphicacy?: relating students' results on a test of graphically represented quantitative information to formal academic achievement2006In: Journal of Research in Science Teaching, ISSN 0022-4308, E-ISSN 1098-2736, Vol. 43, no 1, p. 43-62Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on studies carried out on qualitative data an instrument was constructed for investigating how larger numbers of students handle graphics. This test, consisting of 18 pages, each with its own graphic display(s) and a set of tasks, was distributed to 363 students, 15–16 years of age, from five different schools. The format of the questions varied, as did the format of the graphics. As students' performance was expected to be multidimensional, confirmatory factor analysis was carried out with a structural equation modeling technique. In addition to the identification of a general graphicacy-test factor (Gen) and an end-of-test effect (End′), a narrative dimension (Narr′) was vaguely indicated. This model was then related to a six-factor model of students' formal academic achievement measured by their leaving certificates from compulsory education. The strongest correlation obtained was between the general graphicacy-test dimension (Gen) and a mathematic/science factor (MathSc′) in the grades model. In addition, substantial relationships were detected between the Gen factor and both an overall school achievement factor (SchAch) and a language factor (Lang′) in the grades model.

    Abstract [en]

The veterans in Sweden is a group that is steadily growing, one of the reasons is the new employment agreement that requires the soldiers and officers to commit to Foreign Service. The Swedish Armed Forces have received critique from the government in their investigations concerning the Swedish veteran politics. Since then the Swedish government has introduced a new law that gives the Swedish Armed Forces an utmost responsibility concerning the veteran’s physical and mental health. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively investigate “The Peace berets”, a non-government organization which have had, and is still having a cooperation with the Swedish Armed Forces as a result of the investigation conducted by the Swedish government. We investigate their social work with the veterans and their perspective on the cooperation between them and the public sector.

The study is based on qualitative interviews with four voluntary workers in the organization. In our analysis we have applied a theoretical perspective from the new institutional theory and the collaboration theory, that enlighten our data collected from the interviews. The result shows, as mentioned above, that the organization has a strong collaboration with the Swedish Armed forces, but not with the social workers which could depend on several facts. One of the reasons could be a result of the reigning confusion concerning the Law concerning the Swedish Armed Forces staff at international military interventions (SFS 2010:449).  As a result of the confusion it is uncertain if the Swedish Armed Forces have an utmost responsibility concerning the veterans, which is confirmed by the interviewed persons. As represented in the result, they share different perspectives on whether the utmost responsibility belongs to the Swedish Armed Forces or the commune/ county council where the veteran is domiciled.

Everyday ethical problems in dementia care: a teleological model.2006In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 13, no 4, p. 340-359Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, a teleological model for analysis of everyday ethical situations in dementia care is used to analyse and clarify perennial ethical problems in nursing home care for persons with dementia. This is done with the aim of describing how such a model could be useful in a concrete care context. The model was developed by Sandman and is based on four aspects: the goal; ethical side-constraints to what can be done to realize such a goal; structural constraints; and nurses' ethical competency. The model contains the following main steps: identifying and describing the normative situation; identifying and describing the different possible alternatives; assessing and evaluating the different alternatives; and deciding on, implementing and evaluating the chosen alternative. Three ethically difficult situations from dementia care were used for the application of the model. The model proved useful for the analysis of nurses' everyday ethical dilemmas and will be further explored to evaluate how well it can serve as a tool to identify and handle problems that arise in nursing care.

    Abstract [en]

The usage of computers and Information and Communication technologies (ICT) has changed the way people communicate and share information in many areas, and education is the one of the sectors where ICT plays a major role.

Over the past few years educational sector introduced many new technologies to support teaching and learning methods. To maintain competitiveness at international level, the investment in ICT in schools has grown constantly.

Due to the growing influence of ICT on educational sector the view of people has changed drastically on teaching and learning. Previous research points out that ICT develop students’ different abilities, such as increased learning, abilities to process and handle huge amount of data, as well as intellectual growth. It is also helps students to achieve better academic results by performing better in some of the academic courses. ICT also erases previous limits and allows doing things that were not possible to do before. Some of the examples are flexibility in work and studies, distance learning. According to my study many teachers and students, believe that the investment in ICT is very important because it helps to increase the number of IT- skilled citizens as well as makes school more flexible thus, improves the quality of learning. This work investigates also the possibilities that can be explored with ICT in education, such as importance of investment in ICT in schools, importance of ICT in education and learning in general. My study has shown that, both teachers and students sometimes will be involved in their work and studies even at leisure time. My study has found that ICT improves and facilitates the ways of teaching and learning, as well as learning improves. ICT with these portable technologies make students life more flexible. My interviews indicate that flexibility is good, though there are some risks or disadvantages with ICT in education, including increased plagiarism, as well as superficial learning may be increased. Information search with help of ICT has become easier, according to earlier research, though less than half of all respondents in my study doubt this. The study demonstrates that it is important to invest in education and guidance of information search. Wastage of time is also common problem in school and sometimes this happens because students are not able to use the technology efficiently.
