Feeling well by being together: study of Swedish auditors2016In: Work: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment & Rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, Vol. 54, no 1, p. 79-86Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: As guardians of the public interest, auditors represent a unique occupational group. The group that has shown to experience high level of stress and overload often being associated with environmentally imposed responsibility as well as organizationally imposed performance demands. It is the later aspects, represented by the concept of organizational culture, that is being highlighted in this papers and its relationship to auditors well-beingOBJECTIVES:The paper aims to explore organizational culture as an antecedent of auditors' well-being, which is assumed to have important consequences for the quality of auditors' work. Methods: This study is based on a survey of 207 Swedish auditors. Using established and validated instruments measuring aspects of organizational culture and personal well-being, the study employed correlations and multiple regression analysis in testing the relationship between the two. Results: The results of the study suggest that increasing the degree of collectivistic organizational culture has a positive relationship with three aspects of well-being: Job satisfaction, life balance and life satisfaction. Conclusions: This study is the first attempt to explore well-being of auditors and its antecedents represented by organizational culture. Contrary to the expectation that auditors take an individualistic approach to their work, this study establishes that auditors feel best in a work environment characterized by a collectivist organizational culture.

Ethnic and gender diversity, process and performance in groups of business students in Sweden2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the complex interrelation between ethnic and gender diversity, process and performance in groups of business students. The paper is based on an empirical survey of business students working on a complex assignment in groups of two to five in a small Swedish university. The results indicate that gender diversity leads to positive group outcomes, while ethnic diversity appears to create negative group outcomes. Intervening process variables, such as group communication, conflict and problem solving were found to be strongly influenced by diversity, or to strongly influence group outcomes. While the non-influence of intervening variables can probably be explained by methodological difficulties, the negative outcome for ethnic diversity indicates a need to help students better manage ethnic diversity in order to reap its benefits.

Digitalisation in the banking industry and workers subjective well-being: contingency perspective2018In: International Journal of Workplace Health Management, ISSN 1753-8351, E-ISSN 1753-836X, Vol. 11, no 6, p. 411-423Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how bankers perceive digitalisation relating to their subjective well-being. The paper seeks to further explore how this relation is contingent on the aspect of structural organisation represented by the concept of individualist/collectivist organisational culture.

Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on the survey distributed to employees of 18 bank offices in the south of Sweden, which 161 employees answered. The analysis of the data was performed by descriptive statistics, principle component analysis, Pearson correlations, multiple linear and moderating multiple linear regression analyses.

Findings – The study indicates that bankers’ experience digitalisation as a four-faceted construct: a tool for information management, and work optimisation, customer relation management and as a change agent. The study suggests that the use of digital tools for work optimisation has a positive relation to the work- related dimensions of subjective well-being as well as a spillover effect on the life balance and life satisfaction dimensions. It also indicates that the information management dimension has a positive relation to the life satisfaction aspect of subjective well-being. Finally, the study found that increasing the degree of collectivist organisation culture has a positive moderating effect on the relation between the use of digital tools for work optimisation and life balance and subjective well-being, respectively.

Originality/value – The study reveals a new way of operationalising digitalisation in banks and is the first study of its type to explore the relationship between digitalisation different facets and banker subjective well-being.

Isolated islands in the upper apex of organisations: in search of interaction between the board of directors and the top management team2013In: Corporate Ownership & Control, ISSN 1727-9232, E-ISSN 1810-3057, Vol. 10, no 2, p. 80-90Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on the interaction of compositional effects of boards of directors (BoD) and top management teams (TMTs) on firms' financial performance. Composition of both groups is investigated for cultural, age, tenure and gender diversity. We explore effects of demographic diversity in the two power groups on performance in interaction with each other by bringing in the similarityattraction paradigm to argue for the relationship. Study data are from consolidated financial statements in annual reports of listed Swedish corporations. Our findings suggest that while differences in gender, age and tenure diversities have no effect on firm performance, close alignment of cultural diversities of the BoD and TMT does have a positive effect of firm performance.

Top management teams’ shared leadership and ambidexterity: the role of management control systems2018In: International Review of Administrative Sciences, ISSN 0020-8523, E-ISSN 1461-7226Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The study explores how top management teams’ shared leadership is related to organizational ambidexterity in public-sector organizations, theoretically and empirically considering how this relationship is contingent on the management control system. Using a sample of 85 Swedish municipal housing corporations, we find that shared leadership has a positive relationship with organizational ambidexterity in public-sector organizations. Moreover, increasing use of new public management control systems, based on combined reward and performance controls, positively moderates this relationship. The study also finds that traditional public management control systems, based on combined planning and administrative controls, do not moderate the relationship between top management teams’ shared leadership and organizational ambidexterity. Accordingly, this article contributes to the public and strategic management literature, as well as to managerial practice.

Preventing lipid oxidation during recovery of functional proteins from herring (Clupea harengus) fillets by an acid solubilization process2005In: Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, ISSN 0021-8561, E-ISSN 1520-5118, Vol. 53, no 14, p. 5625-5634Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It has previously been found that a process based on solubilization at pH 2.7 gives high yields of herring muscle proteins with good functionality. In this study, the development of lipid oxidation during acid processing of herring mince was studied. It was tested how modifications of the process conditions and/or additions of antioxidants could prevent lipid oxidation during the actual process and then during ice storage of the protein isolates. Processing parameters evaluated were prewash of the mince, exposure time to pH 2.7, inclusion or exclusion of a high-speed centrifugation, and addition of antioxidants. Antioxidants tested were erythorbate (0.2%, 9.3 mM), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP; 0.2%, 5.4 mM), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA; 0.044%, 1.5 mM), and milk proteins (4%). The first three antioxidants were added in the prewash or during the homogenization step, whereas milk proteins were added to the final precipitate. At time 0, all isolates were analyzed for pH, moisture content, and thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS). Selected isolates were also analyzed for lipid and protein content. Stability during ice storage was followed in terms of odor, TBARS, and color (a*/b* values). Extensive lipid oxidation took place using the "control" process without high-speed centrifugation. This was not significantly (p <= 0.05) affected by a prewash or varied exposure time to pH 2.7. Including high-speed centrifugation (20 min, 10000g) significantly (p <= 0.05) reduced TBARS values, total lipids, a* values and b* values. Erythorbate alone, or in combination with STPP/EDTA, significantly (p <= 0.05) reduced lipid oxidation during processing if added in the prewash or homogenization step. During ice storage, better stability was gained when antioxidants were added in both of these steps and when EDTA was used instead of STPP.

Handledning som verktyg för skolutveckling2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Since a few years back the mental health has deteriorated among the Swedish adolescents. Two of many health and safety factors that prevent mental health are social support, especially by peers and a good basic self-esteem. Therefor was the purpose of this survey to examine adolescents’ social support in relation to body shape/weight and self-esteem. The survey also analyzes differences between boys and girls. The method of the survey was executed with a quantitative approach which made it possible to map the health factors, analyze if there exist any correlations between the health factors and if there occur gender differences. Earlier research and theories describe a connection between social support and self-esteem, which this survey could not confirm. The result of this survey showed instead that a bigger part of the respondents had a low self-esteem but high social support in relation to body shape/ weight and that there were no correlations between these variables. The main findings of the survey showed that about three quarters of the respondents had low self-esteem, more girls than boys had a low self-esteem and both girls and boys had a relatively high social support. The low self-esteem among adolescents can have a damaging effect on their health in both short and long term therefor it is in both society and individuals best interest working to encounter this issue.

Ett sätt att leva - en livsstil: En kvalitativ studie om hur familjehemsföräldrar ser på sitt uppdrag2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study was to investigate how foster-parents regard their task based on the following:

    • Which motives and expectations do foster-parents have to become a foster-home?
    • How does the task as foster-home influence the relations of the family?
    • Do the foster-homes have any need of alleviance from their task?
    • Do the foster-homes have any need of guidance in their task?
    • How do foster-parents think regarding the financial part of their task?

The study was carried out from the basis of qualitative interviews, in which we together interviewed 9 different foster-homes connected to the council of Kristianstad. In 7 of the interviews, both foster-parents participated, in 2 interviews one of the foster-parents participated; in total 16 responders. The interviews were transcribed, analysed and thereafter presented in two different ways. From coding categories, the result was presented both in idealtypes and thematically from quotes.

The foster-parents in our study appear to have a common view as couples in how they regard their task, and that they work well together. In our study we found 5 different idealtypes, who illustrate how they regard various issues. The foster-homes felt that their task had become a way of living, a life style. There were also foster-homes that viewed their task as a profession, where the placed children at the same time were a part of the family.

The foster-homes in our study had taken on the task as foster-home because of personal experiences and contact with other foster-homes in their vicinity. Regarding their view of guidance, the foster-parents agreed that they were in need of guidance mostly in the beginning of a task. The opinions are somewhat varied among foster-parents, regarding alliviance. The foster-parents think that the financial part of their task comes natural.

Screening av risk för undernäring med MEONF: analys av tillförlitlighet2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Rationale: Analyse the criterion related validity, interrater reliability and the usefulness of MEONF, an instrument for undernutrition risk screening. Methods: 100 patients were included and assessed with Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) regarded as golden standard and screened with Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) as well as Minimal Eating Observation and Nutrition Form (MEONF). Results: Nurses regarded MEONF instructions and questions easy to understand, easy to answer (100%) and questions as being important (98%). It had acceptable sensitivity (0.83) and specificity (0.78) in relation to MNA. Sensitivity was higher than found between MUST and MNA (0.57). Replacing BMI with Calf Circumference (CC) gave equivalent results (sensibility 0.83, specificity 0.79) in relation to MNA. Interrater reliability was high (kappa 0.81). Conclusions: MEONF has good validity in relation to MNA and high interrater reliability. If replacing BMI with CC the precision is maintained, which is important in cases were weight or height is difficult to obtain. Having high sensitivity is a major concern for nutritional screening instruments and in that respect MEONF works better than MUST. One fundamental gain with MEONF is that the instruments criteria are experienced as clinically meaningful, in that some observed difficulties can be managed by nursing interventions.

Validity and user-friendliness of the minimal eating observation and nutrition form version II (MEONF II) for undernutrition risk screening2011In: Food & Nutrition Research, ISSN 1654-6628, E-ISSN 1654-661X, no 55, p. 5801-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective To analyze the criterion-related validity and user-friendliness of the Minimal Eating Observation and Nutrition Form – Version II (MEONF – II) and Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) in relation to the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). In addition, the effect of substituting body mass index (BMI) with calf circumference (CC) was explored for the MEONF-II. Methods The study included 100 patients who were assessed for nutritional status with the MNA (full version), considered here to be the gold standard, and screened with the MUST and the MEONF-II. The MEONF-II includes assessments of involuntary weight loss, BMI (or calf circumference), eating difficulties, and presence of clinical signs of undernutrition. Results The MEONF-II sensitivity (0.73) and specificity (0.88) were acceptable. Sensitivity and specificity for the MUST were 0.57 and 0.93, respectively. Replacing the BMI with CC in the MEONF-II gave similar results (sensitivity 0.68, specificity 0.90). Assessors considered MEONF-II instructions and items to be relevant, easy to understand and complete (100%), and the questions to be relevant (98%). MEONF-II and MUST took 8.8 and 4.7 minutes to complete, respectively, and both were considered relevant and easy to finish. In addition, MEONF-II was thought to reveal problems that allows for nursing interventions. Conclusions The MEONF-II is an easy to use, relatively quick, and sensitive screening tool to assess risk of undernutrition among hospital inpatients, which allows for substituting BMI with CC in situations where measures of patient height and weight cannot be easily obtained. High sensitivity is of primary concern in nutritional screening and the MEONF-II outperforms the MUST in this regard.

    Abstract [en]

INTRODUCTION: The Nobel Direct implant (Nobel Biocare AB, Göteborg, Sweden) was developed to minimize marginal bone resorption and to result in "soft tissue integration" for an optimized aesthetic outcome. However, conflicting results have been presented in the literature. The aim of this present study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiologic outcomes of Nobel Direct implants.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten partially edentulous subjects without evidence of active periodontitis (mean age 55 years) received 12 Nobel Direct implants. Implants were loaded with single crowns after a healing period of 3 to 6 months. Treatment outcomes were assessed at month 24. Routine clinical assessments, intraoral radiographs, and microbiologic samplings were made. Histologic analysis of one failing implant and chemical spectroscopy around three unused implants was performed. Paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for the evaluation of bone loss; otherwise, descriptive analysis was performed.

RESULTS: Implants were functionally loaded after 3 to 6 months. At 2 years, the mean bone loss of remaining implants was 2.0 mm (SD +/- 1.1 mm; range: 0.0-3.4 mm). Three out of 12 implants with an early mean bone loss >3 mm were lost. The surviving implants showed increasing bone loss between 6 and 24 months (p = .028). Only 3 out of the 12 implants were considered successful and showed bone loss of <1.7 mm after 2 years. High rates of pathogens, including Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium spp., Porphyromonas gingivalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Tanerella forsythia, were found. Chemical spectroscopy revealed, despite the normal signals from Ti, O, and C, also peaks of P, F, S, N, and Ca. A normal histologic image of osseointegration was observed in the apical part of the retrieved implant.

CONCLUSION: Radiographic evidence and 25% implant failures are indications of a low success rate. High counts and prevalence of significant pathogens were found at surviving implants. Although extensive bone loss had occurred in the coronal part, the apical portion of the implant showed some bone to implant integration.

State of the art and research challenges in the area of autonomous control for a reliable internet of services2018In: Autonomous control for a reliable internet of services: methods, models, approaches, techniques, algorithms, and tools / [ed] Ivan Ganchev, R. D. van der Mei, Hans van den Berg, Springer Open , 2018, p. 1-22Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The explosive growth of the Internet has fundamentally changed the global society. The emergence of concepts like service-oriented architecture (SOA), Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Network as a Service (NaaS) and Cloud Computing in general has catalyzed the migration from the information-oriented Internet into an Internet of Services (IoS). This has opened up virtually unbounded possibilities for the creation of new and innovative services that facilitate business processes and improve the quality of life. However, this also calls for new approaches to ensuring quality and reliability of these services. The goal of this book chapter is to first analyze the state-of-the-art in the area of autonomous control for a reliable IoS and then to identify the main research challenges within it. A general background and high-level description of the current state of knowledge is presented. Then, for each of the three subareas, namely the autonomous management and real-time control, methods and tools for monitoring and service prediction, and smart pricing and competition in multi-domain systems, a brief general introduction and background are presented, and a list of key research challenges is formulated.

Implant therapy in partially edentulous, periodontally compromised patients: a review2005In: Journal of Clinical Periodontology, ISSN 0303-6979, E-ISSN 1600-051X, Vol. 32, no 5, p. 506-511Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to perform a review using a systematic approach to evaluate the long-term (>/=5 years) success of implants placed in partially edentulous patients with a history of periodontitis as evidenced by loss of supporting bone and implant loss.

MATERIAL & METHODS: An electronic search of the National Library of Medicine, Washington DC (Medline-PubMed) was performed using specific search terms to identify studies assessing, in periodontitis patients, the success of implants with regard to bone level outcomes. Search was performed on abstracts registered up to October 2003.

RESULTS: The searches identified 877 abstracts. Titles and abstracts were independently screened by two reviewers (G.A.W. & K.M.B.) to identify publications that met the inclusion criteria. Review of these abstracts resulted in 13 publications for detailed review. These papers were reviewed by the three authors. Finally four papers which met the criteria of eligibility were independently selected by the three reviewers.

CONCLUSION: Based on the limited data, it seems justified to conclude that the outcome of implant therapy in periodontitis patients may be different compared to individuals without such a history as evidenced by loss of supporting bone and implant loss.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the increasing importance of publication metrics in research. Four themes are addressed: the impact of journal metrics on issues like research funding and tenure; the unintended consequences of these metrics; whether the niche domain of public sector accounting journals is threatened by these metrics; and how researchers can best deal with the mania surrounding journal metrics. This article is part of an ongoing and larger research project about the identity shift of public sector accounting researchers due to an increasing importance of publication metrics.

The role of bonus and commission schemes in value co-creation: exploring Tensions and Conflicts in Car Dealerships2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Bonus and commission schemes are common practice among firms as an incentive for the salesforce. Despite the growing body of literature on value co-creation and the practical relevance, it remains unknown how these management tools relate to each other. There is a gap in research on conflict theory but it is argued that they derive from a paradox. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of bonus and commission schemes and the potential tensions and conflicts that are caused by different paradoxes. It shows an exploration of how these paradoxes connect to value co-creation in car dealerships from a salesforce perspective. A theoretical framework is established to review the available literature. We have conducted six in-depth interviews to pursue rich qualitative data to fully grasp the dynamics of the dealership. We have found results that indicate a number of paradoxes that exist in the dealerships. We discuss that the variety of paradoxes bring tensions and conflicts forward, but also that some of the paradoxes are harmless. We also find that our respondents implicitly support value co-creation and that long-term relationships are essential. In our discussion a model is presented to present an overview.

Witness and suspect perceptions of working alliance and interviewing style2011In: Journal of Investigative Psychology and Offender Profiling, ISSN 1544-4759, E-ISSN 1544-4767, Vol. 8, no 2, p. 110-130Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Considerable emphasis is placed on the importance of building rapport when interviewing witnesses and suspects. Despite the abundant literature on the working alliance in therapeutic settings, however, few studies have addressed the topic of 'rapport' in investigative interviewing. Conceptual analysis revealed a number of similarities between the two constructs. This finding suggests the possible benefits of using the theoretical therapeutic construct and operationalisation of the working alliance in order to gain insight into the dynamics of investigative interviewing in a police context. The present study examines the perceptions of witnesses and suspects regarding the working alliance in actual interviews. It also considers their perceptions of interviewing style, which is another key element in investigative interviewing. In addition, the study investigates the relationship between the working alliance and the interview style. Self-report questionnaires completed by investigators and interviewees showed significant differences between investigators and suspects and between witnesses and suspects with regard to perceptions of interview style and the working alliance during interviews. The results showed perceived interview style to be a predictor of the working alliance.

Audiovisuell text och dess inverkan på elevers ordinlärning i engelska2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of the study was to describe the patients’ perception of and the dental hygienist students’ knowledge regarding bad breath (halitosis) in a University educational clinic in Kristianstad. The study is based on a waitingroom survey (n=100), and a studentpoll (n=40).

The result of the patientpoll showed that 58 % felt that they rather would not talk about bad breath, and that 44 % found it that embarrassing to talk about. However 81 % experienced that they were bothered by bad breath from other people. The majority 98 % felt that it was important to smell good from the mouth and 90 % would appreciate if someone could spoke to them that they had bad breath. The studentpolls demonstrated that 75 % was familiar with the term halitosis, and that 77 % knew how this could be treated. The conclusion of this study was, that bad breath is something that many individuals are bothered by, and that more then 58 % of the patients did not want to talk about. The studentpoll showed that the dentalhygienist students had god knowledge regarding halitosis and how halitosis could be treated. The majority of the students wanted more theoretical and practical education regarding the ethiology and treatment of halitosis.

Osteoprotegerin autoantibodies do not predict low bone mineral density in middle-aged women2017In: Bone Reports, ISSN 2352-1872, Vol. 7, p. 132-136Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

Autoantibodies against osteoprotegerin (OPG) have been associated with osteoporosis. The aim was to develop an immunoassay for OPG autoantibodies and test their diagnostic usefulness of identifying women general population with low bone mineral density.

    Methods

Included were 698 women at mean age 55.1 years (range 50.4–60.6) randomly selected from the general population. Measurement of wrist bone mineral density (g/cm2) was performed of the non-dominant wrist by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). A T-score < − 2.5 was defined as having a low bone mineral density. Measurements of OPG autoantibodies were carried by radiobinding assays. Cut-off levels for a positive value were determined from the deviation from normality in the distribution of 398 healthy blood donors representing the 99.7th percentile.

    Results

    Forty-five of the 698 (6.6%) women were IgG-OPG positive compared with 2 of 398 (0.5%) controls (p < 0.0001) and 35 of the 698 (5.0%) women had a T-score < − 2.5. There was no difference in bone mineral density between IgG-OPG positive (median 0.439 (range 0.315–0.547) g/cm2) women and IgG-OPG negative (median 0.435 (range 0.176–0.652) g/cm2) women (p = 0.3956). Furthermore, there was neither a correlation between IgG-OPG levels and bone mineral density (rs = 0.1896; p = 0.2068) nor T-score (rs = 0.1889; p = 0.2086). Diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of IgG-OPG for low bone mineral density were 5.7% and 92.9%, and positive and negative predictive values were 7.4% and 90.8%, respectively.

    Conclusion

Elevated OPG autoantibody levels do not predict low bone mineral density in middle-aged women selected from the general population.

A novel triple mix radiobinding assay for the three ZnT8 (ZnT8-RWQ) autoantibody variants in children with newly diagnosed diabetes2011In: JIM - Journal of Immunological Methods, ISSN 0022-1759, E-ISSN 1872-7905, Vol. 371, no 1-2, p. 25-37Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background and aims: Autoantibodies against the zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8A) are common in type 1 diabetes (T1D). ZnT8A analyses are complicated by the fact that there are three variants of the autoantigen at amino acid position 325 representing ZnT8-R (Arginine), ZnT8-W (Tryptophan) and ZnT8-Q (Glutamin). The aims of the study were: 1) to develop an autoantigen triple mix Radio-Binding Assay (RBA) for ZnT8A: 2) to identify the individual ZnT8-R,-W,-QA reactivity and 3) to validate the triple mix ZnT8A RBA in children with newly diagnosed T1D.

Methods: Serum samples were obtained from 2664 (56% males, n = 1436) patients in the Swedish nationwide Better Diabetes Diagnosis (BDD) study representing patients with T1D (97%, n = 2582), T2D (1.7%, n = 46), MODY (1.0%, n = 28) and secondary diabetes (0.3%, n = 8). cDNA coding for the C-terminal end of each variant was prepared by site-directed mutagenesis and subcloned into a high efficiency in vitro transcription translation vector. The ZnT8 variants were labeled with 35S-methionine and used in a standard RBA separating free from autoantibody-bound autoantigen with Protein A-Sepharose.

Results: ZnT8-TripleA was detected in 1678 (65%) patients with T1D, 4 (9%) T2D, 3 (11%) MODY and in none (0%) of the patients with secondary diabetes. Among the T1D patients ZnT8-RA was detected in 1351 (52%) patients, ZnT8-WA in 1209(47%) and ZnT8-QA in 790(31%) demonstrating that 1661 (64%) had one or several ZnT8A. The ZnT8-TripleA assay showed a false positive rate of 1.9% (n = 49). Only 1.2% (n = 32) of the T1D patients were false negative for ZnT8-TripleA compared to 0/46(0%) of the T2D patients. The precision (intra assay CV) and reproducibility (inter assay CV) of the ZnT8-TripleA assay did not differ from the RBA of the individual ZnT8 variants.

Conclusion: We conclude that the ZnT8-TripleA assay had low false positive and false negative rates. The ZnT8-TripleA assay would therefore be highly suitable not only to analyze patient with newly diagnosed diabetes but also for screening the general population since this assay demonstrated high sensitivity and very high specificity.

Factor H binds to washed human platelets2005In: Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, ISSN 1538-7933, E-ISSN 1538-7836, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 154-162Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Factor H regulates the alternative pathway of complement. The protein has three heparin-binding sites, is synthesized primarily in the liver and copurifies from platelets with thrombospondin-1. Factor H mutations at the C-terminus are associated with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, a condition in which platelets are consumed. Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate if factor H interacts with platelets.

Methods: Binding of factor H, recombinant G or N-terminus constructs and a C-terminus mutant to washed (plasma and complement-free) platelets was analyzed by flow cytometry. Binding of factor H and constructs to thrombospondin-1 was measured by surface plasmon resonance.

Results: Factor H bound to platelets in a dose-dependent manner. The major binding site was localized to the C-terminus. The interaction was partially blocked by heparin. Inhibition with anti-GPIIb/IIIa, or with fibrinogen, suggested that the platelet GPIIb/IIIa receptor is involved in factor H binding. Factor H binds to thrombospondin-1. Addition of thrombospondin-1 increased factor H binding to platelets. Factor H mutated at the C-terminus also bound to platelets, albeit to a significantly lesser degree.

Conclusions: This study reports a novel property of factor H, i.e. binding to platelets, either directly via the GPIIb/IIIa receptor or indirectly via thrombospondin-1, in the absence of complement. Binding to platelets was mostly mediated by the C-terminal region of factor H and factor H mutated at the C-terminus exhibited reduced binding.

Phenotypic expression of factor H mutations in patients with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome2006In: Kidney International, ISSN 0085-2538, E-ISSN 1523-1755, Vol. 69, no 6, p. 981-988Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We investigated the phenotypic expression of factor H mutations in two patients with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Factor H in serum was assayed by rocket immunoelectrophoresis, immunoblotting, and double immunodiffusion and in tissue by immunohistochemistry. Functional activity was analyzed by hemolysis of sheep erythrocytes and binding to endothelial cells. A homozygous mutation in complement control protein (CCP) domain 10 of factor H was identified in an adult man who first developed membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis and later HUS. C3 levels were very low. The patient had undetectable factor H levels in serum and a weak factor H 150 kDa band. Double immunodiffusion showed partial antigenic identity with factor H in normal serum owing to the presence of factor H-like protein 1. Strong specific labeling for factor H was detected in glomerular endothelium, mesangium and in glomerular and tubular epithelium as well as in bone marrow cells. A heterozygous mutation in CCP 20 of factor H was found in a girl with HUS. C3 levels were moderately decreased at onset. Factor H levels were normal and a normal 150 kDa band was present. Double immunodiffusion showed antigenic identity with normal factor H. Factor H labeling was minimal in the renal cortex. Factor H dysfunction was demonstrated by increased sheep erythrocyte hemolysis and decreased binding to endothelial cells. In summary, two different factor H mutations associated with HUS were examined: in one, factor H accumulated in cells, and in the other, membrane binding was reduced.

ZnT8 autoantibody titers in type 1 diabetes patients decline rapidly after clinical onset2010In: Autoimmunity, ISSN 0891-6934, E-ISSN 1607-842X, Vol. 43, no 8, p. 598-606Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Autoantibodies to the islet-specific zinc transporter isoform 8 (ZnT8) are detected in the majority of type 1 diabetes patients prior to and at clinical diagnosis. The presence of ZnT8Ab after diagnosis has not been investigated. This study analyzed the autoantibody response to ZnT8 in regard to age at onset and disease duration. Two new onset type 1 diabetes patient cohorts with different age distributions at onset (2-17 and 15-34 years of age at onset), a longitudinal subset of the younger type 1 diabetes patient cohort (n = 32), and a cohort of GAD65Ab-positive LADA patients (n = 47) was analyzed for the presence of autoantibodies directed to the two major isoforms, ZnT8-Arginine (ZnT8R) and ZnT8-Tryptophan (ZnT8W). The majority of type 1 diabetes patients tested positive for ZnT8Ab to both isoforms. ZnT8Ab titers were significantly higher in the younger type 1 diabetes patients as compared with the older cohort (ZnT8RAb at a median of 148 and 29 U/ml, respectively, p < 0.001) (ZnT8WAb at a median of 145 and 58 U/ml, respectively, p < 0.01). ZnT8RAb and ZnT8WAb titers were significantly lower in the LADA patients (ZnT8RAb at a median of 14 U/ml, ZnT8WAb at a median of 25 U/ml) as compared with either type 1 diabetes cohorts. In our longitudinal analysis of type 1 diabetes patients after clinical diagnosis, ZnT8Ab levels to both isoforms declined significantly during the initial year of disease (ZnT8RAb from a median of 320-162 U/ml, p = 0.0001; ZnT8WAb from a median of 128-46 U/ml, p = 0.0011). The antibody titers further declined during the following 4 years (p < 0.0001). We conclude that ZnT8Ab presents a useful marker for type 1 diabetes, especially in younger patients at disease diagnosis.

Integrative systematic studies on tardigrades from Antarctica identify new genera and new species within Macrobiotoidea and Echiniscoidea2016In: Invertebrate systematics, ISSN 1445-5226, E-ISSN 1447-2600, Vol. 30, no 4, p. 303-322Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Tardigrades represent one of the most abundant groups of Antarctic metazoans in terms of abundance and diversity, thanks to their ability to withstand desiccation and freezing; however, their biodiversity is underestimated. Antarctic tardigrades from Dronning Maud Land and Victoria Land were analysed from a morphological point of view with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and from a molecular point of view using two genes (18S, 28S) analysed in Bayesian inference and maximum-likelihood frameworks. In addition, indel-coding datasets were used for the first time to infer tardigrade phylogenies. We also compared Antarctic specimens with those from Italy and Greenland. A combined morphological and molecular analysis led to the identification of two new evolutionary lineages, for which we here erect the new genera Acanthechiniscus, gen. nov. (Echiniscidae, Echiniscoidea) and Mesobiotus, gen. nov. (Macrobiotidae, Macrobiotoidea). Moreover, two species new to science were discovered: Pseudechiniscus titianae,sp. nov. (Echiniscidae : Echiniscoidea) and Mesobiotus hilariae, sp. nov. (Macrobiotidae : Macrobiotoidea). This study highlights the high tardigrade diversity in Antarctica and the importance of an integrated approach in faunal and taxonomic studies.

Assessing attachment models using the implicit association test 2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Internal working models of attachment are claimed to be unconscious structures operating outside the conscious awareness. Existing measures of attachment are almost exclusively explicit, either self-reports or interviews and it is questionable whether these instruments are able to tap into unconscious attachment attitudes. The main purpose of the present study is to develop Implicit Association Test (IAT) tools for assessing adult attachment and to examine their construct validity. Two sets of implicit attachment measures, based on the two-dimensional attachment model (Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991), were developed. Convergent validity was assessed by examining (1) the relationship between implicit model of self and implicit self-esteem and (2) the relationship between the implicit model of other and implicit sociability. Divergent validity of attachment IATs was assessed by examining the relationship between the explicit and implicit attachment. The results showed support for convergent validity of the IAT Model of Self and for divergent validity.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sjuksköterskans atityder gentemot patienter som vårdas efter suicidförsök2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

    Abstract [sv]

Neuropsykiatriska diagnoser blir allt vanligare i dagens samhälle.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of women's violence against men in intimate relationships, get an idea of what forms of expression that this type of violence has and to highlight the men's experiences of violence.

There is little scientific research in the field in Sweden. Crime Prevention Council has determined that eight percent of all complaints involving domestic violence in 2010, reported by men over 18 years. You can only speculate on how large number of unreported cases is among abused men. The international studies highlight that the abused men feel ashamed of having been subjected to violence by a female partner.

I have been based this essay on two theoretical premises, Per Isdal theory of "violence perspective" and Elaine Bergqvist's definition of the suppression technique.

The study was conducted through a qualitative content analysis. This type of method used to interpret the various texts, and to this study, three autobiographies was analyzed.    The results from the survey highlights that all men have been subjected to extensive financial, material, latent and psychological violence. Two men have been subjected to regular physical violence and one of the men has been the victim of sexual violence. The discussion highlighted that violence against men in intimate relationships is undetectable and taboo and that the phenomenon must be recognized and made more visible. The conclusion of this study was that the abused men feel ashamed to seek help but that is also exists lack of adequate help and support to give to men which has been abused.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Yllesugning och ylleätning hos katter (Felis silvestris catus)2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Wool sucking and wool eating are comparatively unusual behavioral problems in domestic cats. They have not been studied much, despite having been known for a long time. There is a lack of well formulated hypotheses that can explain the results from the only published study about the subject thus far.  Because of that need, an internet-based survey with 205 cats was performed. According to the results, the natural suckling behavior can remain into adulthood when a kitten is taken from its mother before 5-6 weeks of age. The suckling behavior is directed towards fabric in the form of the oral stereotypy wool sucking. Wool eating turned out to be a stereotypic behavior too, but in this case associated with the degree of object play that a cat engages in. The degree of object play is higher in younger cats than in older cats, and also higher in breeds of Southeast Asian origin than in other breeds. The degree of wool eating turned out to follow the same pattern as the degree of object play. Wool eating thus seems to be a misdirected predatory behavior. It is still unclear if there is a connection between wool sucking and wool eating or not.
