    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: One of today's problems is that health professionals in meeting with parents of children with self-harm, has a lack of understanding of their experiences. Parents' experiences are important for healthcare professionals to know about in order to provide good care without being judgmental. Objective: The objective was to describe parents' experiences of having a child with self-harm. Method: The study was done as a literature study based on seven qualitative articles. Results: The literature study revealed four main categories: The parents felt helpless, the parents directed their anger against the child, the parents felt it was their fault and the parents experienced a lack of help. They also found that many parents experienced a lack of help from health care. They did not know where help was to look or where to turn for support. Parents think they are more able to deal with life if they received help from health care. Discussion: The lack of parental experiences of care may be due to misallocation of resources. Had more funding priority in the care of relatives, was perhaps shortened the duration of treatment for the child. The parents had also felt more meaningful and involved in treatment. They found that parents' reactions are similar to those encountered in a crisis. Shock phase, reaction phase, processing phase and reorientation phase is the part that occurs in a crisis. Conclusion: The family perspective is important to remember when professionals encounter a child with self-harm and their relatives. The nurse should have knowledge of other agencies that can provide support to patients and families in a crisis if they do not have expertise in the area. Research would be desirable with focus on how the medical staff can provide better care to the parents.

Samma eller likartad verksamhet: ordalydelsens nya skatterättsliga tolkning2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sex och samlevnad i ämnet naturkunskap: samtal i en lärargrupp kring nytt innehåll i ämnesplanen2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Relations in palliative care2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Background: Relation means the relationship between two parts. By creating a good relation between nurse and patient you can conduce a better caring. Aim: The aim of the study was to illustrate the relation within palliative care from nurse- patient perspective. Method: The study is a literature review where ten articles were analysed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The findings showed that knowledge, communication, continuity, silence and availability were the most important thing for the nurse in the relationship. Energy, regular contacts, having time and the nurse being able to listen was most important for the patient. In the encounter between the nurse and patient, communication is fundamental for understanding in the conversation where the patient tried to find information about treatment, medicament and the illness. The most valuable was being able to talk about feelings. You must get to know the patient as the person he is to be able to know his interests and what he considers important. Continuity is a prerequisite to make the patient feel safe and secure. Conclusion: Being able to pay attention to unspoken needs and understanding why the patient reacts the way he does is a proof that knowledge has appeared.

Keywords: Relationship, relation nurse – patient, communication, palliative care.

    Abstract [sv]

In search of legitimacy – registered nurses’ experience of providing palliative care in a municipal context2013In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 27, no 3, p. 651-658Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background:  The palliative care approach was originally developed for hospice care and for persons with cancer diseases, but has gradually expanded to embrace other contexts and people of all ages, with various life-threatening diseases. The palliative care concept thus also applies to older people and the context of municipal care, where Registered Nurses (RNs) hold key care provision positions. The municipal context is not, however, focused primarily on advanced nursing care, and it is important to highlight RNs’ prerequisites for care provision. Aim:  The study’s aim was to describe RNs’ experience of providing palliative care for older people in a municipal context. Data were collected through focus group discussions with 20 RNs from four different municipalities in southern Sweden and were analysed using conventional content analysis. Findings:  The results showed that the nurses experienced that it was they who cushioned the effects of unclear responsibilities between different organizations, but had limited legitimacy in the municipal context and in relation to other care providers. The results also showed that nurses lacked proper support and prerequisites for providing high-quality palliative care to older dying patients. Conclusion:  The results pinpoint the importance of increased acknowledgement of nurses’ knowledge and skills and a critical view on the effects of moving towards an organization composed of different consultants, which can lead to even more unclear responsibility for nursing care provision.

    Abstract [sv]

The overall aim of this thesis was threefold; first, to explore resources associated with work-life balance (WLB), with a focus on the work and private lives of human service employees. Second, to develop a workplace health promotion (WHP) intervention with a WLB focus. Third, to explore the participants’ experiences of the developed WHP intervention done in the workplace. A mixed method approach was used to answer the research questions. The thesis is based on two qualitative studies, one quantitative study and one paper that describe the content and development process of the intervention. The qualitative studies were based on individual interviews and focus group interviews (I, IV). Thirteen semi-structured individual interviews and two focus group interviews were conducted with home help service nurses in Sweden (I). Eight focus group interviews and eight semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with participants in the intervention (IV). A qualitative content analysis was used for the analyses in the qualitative studies. The quantitative study was based on a questionnaire survey to a population of two municipality departments (n = 631, response rate 76%) (II). A linear regression model and logistics regressions models were used for the analyses. The planning and development of the intervention was done using an intervention mapping approach (III). The findings showed a complex picture of resources related to WLB. Resources could be found in the work domain, the private domain and the individual domain (I, II). In the work domain, it seems to be important to have a positive time experience and a meaningful job, but also to work part-time and do shift work. In the private domain, a positive time experience and social support was highlighted. Individual resources such as good health, well-being, reflection and satisfaction with one´s life situation were seen as essential to WLB. The development process of the intervention resulted in the “Balance in Everyday Life Empowerment” (BELE) program (III). The findings showed that a majority of the participants taking part in the BELE program experienced a process of change, often enhanced by an increased awareness, support and inner strength, which promoted well-being and balance in their everyday life (IV). In conclusion, it seems important to use a holistic approach where resources in the employees’ overall life situation are included for the enhancement of WLB. The BELE program was an attempt to contribute to WHP with a WLB focus, and the result indicates that the program was effective with regard to promoting employee well-being.

"The importance of awareness, support and inner strength to balance everyday life": a qualitative study about women's experiences of a workplace health promotion program in human service organizations in Sweden2019In: BMC Women's Health, ISSN 1472-6874, E-ISSN 1472-6874, Vol. 19, no 1, article id 7Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: In many European countries, women have a higher sickness absence rate than men. Women also report higher levels of work-life conflict, which has a negative impact on women's self-perceived health. Interventions studies on work-life balance literature are scarce. This research adds knowledge about work-life balance by examining female employees' experiences of a newly developed intervention program, the BELE program (Balance in Everyday Life Empowerment program), aiming to enhance the work-life balance and wellbeing of female employees.

METHODS: All participants in the BELE program were included in the sample (n = 55) of the study. The methods used for gathering data were focus group interviews (n = 8) and semi-structured individual interviews (n = 8). A qualitative content analysis was used for the analyses.

RESULTS: The results showed that a majority of the participants experienced a process of change for enhancement of wellbeing and balance in their everyday life when taking part in the BELE program. In the analyses, three main themes emerged. Reflecting and strengthening inner resource, Trying to change everyday patterns and habits and Experiencing more balance and well-being.

CONCLUSIONS: The results point out the importance of awareness and reflection on everyday life to promote work-life balance and wellbeing. The BELE program was described as a wakeup call to one's own life and as an enhancer of empowerment processes and equality in the homes. Moreover, the results showed the need for health education in the workplace focusing on both work and private life to enhance balance and wellbeing among female employees'. The findings indicate that it is important to work at individual and group levels in work-life balance interventions and not merely at the organizational level or in the workplace setting.

Shift work to balance everyday life: a salutogenic nursing perspective in home help service in Sweden2015In: BMC Nursing, ISSN 1472-6955, E-ISSN 1472-6955, Vol. 14, no 1, p. 2-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Nurses in Sweden have a high absence due to illness and many retire before the age of sixty. Factors at work as well as in private life may contribute to health problems. To maintain a healthy work–force there is a need for actions on work-life balance in a salutogenic perspective. The aim of this study was to explore perceptions of resources in everyday life to balance work and private life among nurses in home help service.

Methods: Thirteen semi-structured individual interviews and two focus group interviews were conducted with home help service nurses in Sweden. A qualitative content analysis was used for the analyses.

Result: In the analyses, six themes of perceptions of recourses in everyday life emerged; (i) Reflecting on life. (ii) Being healthy and taking care of yourself. (iii) Having a meaningful job and a supportive work climate. (iv) Working shifts and part time. (v) Having a family and a supporting network. (vi) Making your home your castle.

Conclusions: The result points out the complexity of work-life balance and support that the need for nurses to balance everyday life differs during different phases and transitions in life. In this salutogenic study, the result differs from studies with a pathogenic approach. Shift work and part time work were seen as two resources that contributed to flexibility and a prerequisite to work-life balance. To have time and energy for both private life and work was seen as essential. To reflect on and discuss life gave inner strength to set boundaries and to prioritize both in private life and in work life. Managers in nursing contexts have a great challenge to maintain and strengthen resources which enhance the work-life balance and health of nurses. Salutogenic research is needed to gain an understanding of resources that enhance work-life balance and health in nursing contexts.

The complexity of resources related to work-life balance and well-being: a survey among municipality employees in Sweden2017In: International Journal of Human Resource Management, ISSN 0958-5192, E-ISSN 1466-4399, Vol. 28, no 16, p. 2351-2374Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Increasing sickness absence rates among care and service employees in Sweden motivate health-promoting activities. It is crucial to employers and key stakeholders, like HRM departments, to have knowledge of resources related to employees' work life balance (WLB) to increase well-being at work. The aim of the study was to explore resources associated with WLB, with focus on work and private lives among care and service employees. A questionnaire survey to a total population of two municipality departments (n = 631, response rate 76%) was conducted. A linear regression model showed five significant main resources related to WLB: a positive life situation, recovery, a positive time experience at work, a positive time experience in private life and wellbeing. Logistics regression models further exploring the main resources showed essential sub-resources such as health-promoting leadership, supportive home environment and reflection on everyday life. This two-step analysis with a salutogenic perspective points out a holistic and complex picture of possibilities to promote employees' WLB and wellbeing. These findings can be used as a supportive framework for HR departments in charge of competence development for managers. Moreover, the results are important in both policy-making and as a foundation for workplace health promotion (WHP) interventions.

Likt ett brustet halleluja: trons och tvivlets tematik i Christine Falkenlands prosa2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is a study of the Christian thematics in the novels of Christine Falkenland. It has two basic aims. First, to demonstrate how Christine Falkenland writes herself into, and becomes a distinct voice in, a Christian literary tradition, while simultaneously breaking with this tradition by staging and portraying modern people’s questioning of the Christian worldview. Second, to uncover, examine, and bring together the recurring thematics, motifs, and imagery in Falkenland’s novels. Four novels – Släggan och städet (The Hammer and the Anvil; 1996), Skärvor av en sönderslagen spegel (Fragments of a Broken Mirror; 1997), Min skugga (My Shadow; 1998) and Själens begär (The Soul’s Desire; 2000) – provide a focus for the study. The novels are not seen as separate works, but as parts of a whole; they display a notable consistency in inner as well outer composition.

The theoretical foundations of the study come together under three headings: thematics, intertextuality, and dialogism. By uncovering and mapping the occurrences of repeated symbols, motifs, and themes, a pattern can be discerned – a pattern which is characteristic for the oeuvre as a whole. When it comes to Christine Falkenland, it is obvious that the use of certain recurring words, symbols, and metaphors is connected to the thematic unity of the works. It is also clear that Christine Falkenland is connected to a rich textual tradition through her thematics. Through quotations and allusions, the Bible stands out as her principal intertext, but other sources can also be found, such as sadomasochistic erotic literature and Classical myth. The different voices in the texts are not in accord, but in constant discussion, fighting each other and pulling in opposite directions.

Falkenland’s novels display a traditionally Christian set of problems with basic theological oppositions such as heaven–earth, body–soul, and law–gospel, oppositions which can contain praise as well as lamentation. In this manner, Christine Falkenland displays a literary portrayal of an existential position in the thematics of faith and doubt: the solitary person who fights for her faith, someone who ceaselessly sings her broken hallelujah to a hidden God.

Långtidssjukskrivningar ur ledare och medarbetares perspektiv: En studie i tre organisationer2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The perception on auditors’ involvement in tax evasion arrangements2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

For most, offshore company setups in countries such as Panama or Ireland are tied to thoughts of illegal activities leading to tax evasion. Although in many cases these preconceptions seem to be in order, in general we seem to miss a key point in reasoning of how and why these activities are possible. The conclusions this study provides are based on material derived from qualitative interviews conducted in Sweden and are used to argue against existing research findings which point the auditor as a key player in tax evasion arrangements and a reason of tax evasion existence. In addition, we argue that issues of tax evasion are of complex nature and therefore no individual profession can be pointed to as a scapegoat, instead additional research needs be done in order to map and understand the processes that are involved in setting up a tax evasion arrangement. Furthermore, the material gathered by this research suggests that a better understanding of tax evasion arrangements might form the ground for an international collaboration such as effective common regulation against tax evasion. The interviews which this study is based upon are conducted on auditor stakeholders who have an understanding in taxation issues and who work near auditors and therefore have an adequate understanding of the auditor profession.

Förnöjelse i en Kärleksrelation2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera is an endangered species. To survive, the young mussels demand a fairly coarse bottom material containing an appropriate quantity of organic substrate to survive without suffocating. In order to estimate if a bottom is suitable for juvenile mussels, samples of the sediment are needed. To obtain samples a sampling device called the Mulv collector has been developed within this project. Bottom samples were collected from 18 stations in 4 south Swedish streams, Vramsån, Kling-storpsbäcken, Brönnestadsån and Bräkneån. No rejuvenation of the mussel was found at the stations containing more than 25% fine material.

This article lays a research agenda for the studies of cultural diversity in top management teams, by reviewing models, methods and definitions utilised within this stream of research. It reviews three different models that are used in studies of cultural diversity of top management teams, as well as elaborates on different methods, and conceptualisation of culture. The article concludes with a discussion, and suggests the research agenda in studies of cultural diversity in top management teams, proposing the use and combination of models, methods as well as conceptualisation and measurement of culture. Key result of this paper is development of the analytical framework for the studies of cultural diversity in top management teams and proposition of the alternative ways of operationalisation of culture and exploration of the black-box of team processes.

Ethnic identity, power and communication in top management teams2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose − This study explores the “black box” of top management team (TMT) processes such as communication and power distribution, examining the example of ethnically diverse TMTs in Latvia.

Methodology/approach − The study relies on case studies of two multinational companies operating in Latvia.

Findings − The findings suggest that ethnic diversity in TMTs leads to more informal and open communication in the teams, but has no clear influence on power distribution in the teams. The results highlight the importance of studying variables that could moderate the effects of ethnic diversity on communication and power distribution; throughout the study, these variables were identified as, but not limited to, environment and shared goals.

Originality/value of paper − This paper uses case studies to explore the black box of team processes, and proposes an alternative operationalization of cultural diversity, measured as ethnic diversity. It also advocates an alternative conceptualization of TMTs expressed in terms of decision-making power. The paper’s major contribution is its opening up and exploration of team processes, usually avoided by researchers because of their assumed complexity. Moreover, the study contributes to TMT studies by presenting the Latvian environment as a unique research locus where ethnic identities are rich and various.

    Abstract [en]

This paper empirically investigates the relationship between cultural and gender diversity and performance in groups of business students working on complex assignments. The study finds that gender diversity in student groups has a positive influence on group outcomes, while cultural diversity, irrespective of its conceptualisation, leads to negative group outcomes. Process variables such as communication, conflict and effectiveness of problem solving were found not to be influenced by demographic diversity or to have any effect on group outcomes. While the non-finding in group process investigation might be attributed to methodological difficulties, the negative influence of cultural diversity in student groups on performance indicates the further need for facilitation of coaching students in intercultural communications and cross-cultural understanding among educators.

The bottom line of cultural diversity at the top: the top management team's cultural diversity and its influence on organisational outcomes2012Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates the relationship between cultural diversity in top management team (TMT) and organisational outcomes. The theoretical framework developed within this dissertation identifies three major concerns in this relationship. Firstly, the issues related to the lack of research on the contingencies, secondly problems associated with the method of inquiry, and thirdly the conceptualisation of culture. Adopting these issues as a guide for further investigation, this dissertation investigates the black box of the TMT process through the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods/concepts, adopting national and ethnic diversity as proxies for cultural diversity. The majority of the studies in the group and TMT research indicate that cultural diversity is usually associated with negative group and organisational outcomes. The finding of this dissertation, however, indicate that TMT cultural diversity has a positive effect on organisational outcomes albeit under two conditions. Firstly, when TMT cultural diversity mirrors cultural diversity of the Board of Directors, indicating the importance of TMT interaction in the upper apex of the organisation, and secondly, when TMT has a shared vision that reduces the perceived negative influence of cultural diversity on TMT process and subsequently on organisational outcomes.

This  paper examines the  influences of  cultural diversity in  the top management team (TMT) on organizational performance. The link between the two is investigated through the path dependency model, where firm ambidextrous orientation serves  an intervening role. The  results of  the  study suggest that TMT cultural diversity will have a negative influence on firm performance due to the decreasing degree of ambidextrous orientation being a result of TMT diversity. The study is based on the  survey  filled  out  by  82  CEO  of  Danish  and  Swedish  listed  corporations. Studies  theoretical contribution is expressed in uncovering the mediating role of firm’s ambidextrous orientation on the TMT diversity – performance relationship.

Organization culture and well-being of Swedish auditors2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper explores relationship between organizational context and auditors’ well-being. Where organizational context is explored through the prism of three types of organizational culture: clan, hierarchy, adhocracy and market and well-being represented by job satisfaction, life satisfaction and life balance. The study is based on the survey of 209 Swedish auditors performed in spring 2014, and explored the relationship between organizational context and auditors’ well-being by the means of correlations and multiple regression analysis. Results of the study indicate that clan organizational culture is the strongest positive driver of auditors’ well-being. Study also indicates that hierarchy culture has a positive effect on auditors’ job satisfaction, while market culture has a negative influence on auditors’ life balance. Findings of the study have implications for both theory and practice, in that it established the link between different aspects of organizational context and auditors’ well-being consequently suggesting human resource strategy of managing organizational context to auditing firms.

Feeling well by being together: study of Swedish auditors2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As guardians of the public interest, auditors represent a unique occupational group. The paper explores organizational culture as an antecedent of auditors’ well-being, which is assumed to have important consequences for the quality of auditors’ work. This study is based on a survey of 207 Swedish auditors. Using established and validated instruments measuring aspects of organizational culture and personal well-being, the study employed correlations and multiple regression analysis in testing the relationship between the two.The results of the study suggest that increasing the degree of collectivistic organizational culture has a positive effect on three aspects of well-being: job satisfaction, life balance and life satisfaction. This study is the first attempt to explore well-being of auditors and its antecedents represented by organizational culture. Contrary to the expectation that auditors take an individualistic approach to their work, this study establishes that auditors feel best in a work environment characterized by a collectivist organizational culture.
