Förändringar för företag efter konvertering till IFRS: en kvalitativ studie ur medarbetarnas perspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Creating dialogical pop-up installations in public spaces2017In: Murmurations: Journal of Transformative Systemic Practice,, ISSN 2516-0052, Vol. 1, no 1, p. 1-17Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we share reflections from our research into spontaneous coordinations through the creation of pop-up dialogical installations. We offer a collage of anecdotes from our professional practice, from our personal lives and from dialogical installations. These episodes highlight themes from our everyday practice and show us what we do and what we value, but through new doorways. From our work on the streets, we see how i) making something with, and for, people requires daring; ii) we are always involved in reconfiguring dialogical space as we go; iii) we exchange planning for preparation; iv) dialogue is always influenced by, and influencing of, context; v) collage in writing and mixed media allows us to experiment with new configurations of words, and share some mo(ve)ments from the installations.

Serum IgG to heat shock proteins and Porphyromonas gingivalis antigens in diabetic patients with periodontitis.2002In: Journal of Clinical Periodontology, ISSN 0303-6979, E-ISSN 1600-051X, Vol. 29, no 6, p. 551-562Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Past studies have reported a correlation between the presence and severity of periodontitis and serum antibody titers to species-specific antigens of Porphyromonas gingivalis or to cross-reactive antigens, such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and heat shock proteins (HSP), shared between P. gingivalis and other bacteria. Our recent study of periodontal treatment outcome in insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes mellitus patients with severe periodontitis (IDDMI/periodontitis) resulted in two key findings: 1. serum glutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibody (GAD65 Ab) levels were significantly associated with periodontal pocket depth change (PDC) and 2. serum IgG titers to P. gingivalis cells were positively associated with GAD65 Ab level in seropositive (GAD65 Ab +) patients. We have therefore hypothesized that profiles of serum autoantibody levels and IgG titers, to P. gingivalis-specific antigens may be useful in assessing risk for refractory periodontitis in such patients.

AIM: To determine whether PDC resulting from non-surgical periodontal treatment can be predicted using profiles of baseline IgG titers to P. gingivalis-specific antigens, human HSP, and GAD65.

METHODS: PDC was assessed two months after non-surgical periodontal treatment of 7 GAD65 Ab + and 11 GAD65 AbIDDM/periodontitis patients. Pretreatment titers to GAD65, recombinant human heat shock proteins (HSP90, HSP70, and HSP60), and various P. gingivalis antigens were measured using radioligand precipitation or enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assays and compared to the same measurements for 154 recent-onset IDDM patients and 46 non-diabetic controls.

    RESULTS: Median titers (ELISA units) to HSP90 and HSP70 were significantly higher than non-diabetic controls for GAD65 Ab + (p degrees = 0.002) and GAD65 Ab- (p = 0.034) IDDM/periodontitis patients, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis indicated significant partial correlation of PDC with log-transformed titers to HSP90 (r = - 0.62, p = 0.008), HSP70 (r = + 0.62, p = 0.009), GAD65 (r = - 0.60, p = 0.01) and P. gingivalis LPS (r = - 0.5 1, p = 0.04). Furthermore, hierarchical clustering of baseline profiles of log-transformed HSP90, HSP70, and GAD65 Ab titers sorted patients into two distinct clusters with significantly different median PDC (1.45 min, n = 10 vs. 0.65 min, n = 8; p = 0.016, Mann-Whitney).

CONCLUSION: Pretreatment profiles of serum antibody titers to HSP90, HSP70, GAD65, and P. gingivalis LPS may be useful for predicting which patients with IDDM/periodontitis will have a poor response to non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Hur mår gymnasieflickorna?: en kvalitativ studie om flickors tankar kring kroppsideal, levnadsvanor och utseende2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mental illness is increasing among high school girls. At the same time the use of social media is increasing which is considered to be a major part of Western society. Increased body weight is considered to be associated with dissatisfaction whit the appearance. A dissatisfaction whit body perception can lead to problems such as depression, anorexia nervosa, self-injury and drug abuse. Never before has it been considered as difficult as it is today to fit into the today's society regarding apperance and it has been a negative trend over recent years. Through increased self-confidence and physical activity can body perception be improved. The purpose of the study was to investigate the thoughts of high school girls regarding how body perception, body ideals and living habits affect their health. Through semistructured interviews of six high school girls the study's empirical content was obtained from which further a inductive qualitative concentanylsis was conducted. The results of the study showed that the thoughts differ and aspects which affect the health most are considered to be the circle of friends and social media. Furthermore, the result showed that the individuals need to find factors in life to create and maintain good health, these factors differ from each individual. In addition to this, the result showed that physical activity, in excessive amounts, did contribute to a better health. From a public-health perspective is it important to increase the health of the population and prevent mental illness, especially among the young people who are the future of Sweden. Further studies on the subject can lead to more and better methods and strategies to prevent mental illness among high school girls.

Psykiska övergrepp inom äldrevården2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Background: Physological abuse consists of threats, harassment, humiliation, telling off, refuse to talk, social isolation, abandonment as well as attitudes that lead to a feeling of insecurity and desperation. Institutional elder abuse is very elusive and an overall picture is still considered missing.

Aim: The purpose of this essay was to review psychological abuse within the elderly care.

Method: This essay is based on a literature study with systematic search.

Result: This article review led to main categories and the result of the study is presented after these. The first ones gives a picture of the kind of psychological abuse that occured within the the elderly care. The second one deals with the possible explanations for psychological abuse within elderly care. The result showed that verbal assault was the most common form of psychological abuse against elderly. A more discreet form of abuse took place when caregivers used depersonalization or infantilization. Isolation and threats occured at a lesser extent.

Conclusion: A caregiver with an inappropriate behavior towards elderly often means well basically but could psychologically abuse elderly patients because of one´s stress, fear, ignorance or anger. Stereotyped attitudes towards eldery (so-called ageism) could also, consciously or unconsciously, influence attitudes in institutional settings. The banalisation of psychological abuse, if the abuse is not questioned, will continue. Therefor we must ensure that carers have access to adequate knowledge in order to develop an appropriate attitude towards elderly.

Do preschool children not forget over time?2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Th result of recognition tests on 4- and 6-year-olds resulted in a forgetting curve for 6-year olds over 48 h, but not for 4-year-olds, who kept the same level of correct recognition.

A tentative exmplanation is that the older children were more mentally active during the longer retention intervals, causing more false trails than the youger children. The older children, may be more active over time in processing  the material to a much greater degree, for instance in categorizing the animals. Thereby, the 6-year-olds may loose some of the specificity of the perceptual traces over time, making presented and distraction animals less distinct from one another. Thememories of the  4-year olds are then thought to remain more stabe, as they do not get re-processed in the same manner.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Undersökningen ger ett resultat om hur en lärare bemöter barn med diagnosen ADHD i en skola för alla. Efter genomförandet av denna studie vill vi särskilt belysa följande punkter att ha i åtanke då man bemöter barn med ADHD i en skola för alla;

    • Att ha kunskap om vad ADHD är, och gärna gå fortbildning.
    • Att ha en bra och tydlig struktur över den dagliga verksamheten.
    • Att anpassa undervisning med lättare uppgifter, kortare och mer konkreta.

Populär historia - historiesyn kontra kursplan2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Kollegialitet och individualism: en identitetskonflikt i revisorers vardag?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research of organizational structure and control in the audit profession suggest that there is a contradiction in that auditors should both nurture collegialities while they at the same time have their own responsibility for their individual development and career. This creates a competitive situation among colleagues who in return are expected to maintain a good social relationship and team spirit with each individual. Subsequently, being part of the collegiality and being highly individualistic, gives rise to a theoretical dilemma where these opposing forces are supposed to coincide with each other. The purpose of this paper is to create a bigger understanding of how auditors at major accounting firms can handle the conflict that arises. In order to explore this dilemma, we conducted a qualitative study based on an abductive approach. We have made seven semi-structured interviews from a localistic view. In addition, we have limited our sample to auditors in the Big 4 of southern Sweden.Furthermore, we have chosen to analyse the conflict from an identity perspective to better understand how auditors can relate to both collegiality and individualism. Through this study we have concluded that it only looks like a paradox in theory. Our empirical evidence suggests that this is not a practical problem. This principal contradiction dissolves in the everyday chaos where one is automatically suppressed by the other. Our conclusion that auditors do not see this as a practical problem, does not lead to that the theoretical dilemma is unimportant. It rather requires a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. The conclusion also results into questioning what this means for the theory of control and organizational structure. This phenomenon can also be applied to other parts of society. Today's labour market is considered increasingly individualized where each individual is responsible for their own success, while they at the same time are supposed to consider the collegiality and collaborate with others as well as the company at large. Therefore, our study provides a social contribution in the form of increased understanding of how individuals deal with the conflict between collegiality and individualism.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Smoking is a health problem with a negative impact on virtually all body organs. Smoking can cause, for example, lung cancer, cancers in other organs and cardiovascular disease. There is also a social aspect of smoking. If individuals have many smokers in their environment, the risk to start smoking is increased, and for those who already smoke the chance of quitting will be less. Many municipalities today face smoke-free working to reduce smoking and passive smoking adverse effects. The Kristianstad municipality has not introduced smoke-free working. The purpose of this study was to investigate the employees in Kristianstad municipality attitudes to smoke-free working hours as a basis for a change. The method used was a quantitative cross-sectional study by questionnaire. The data collection was conducted in four administrations with a web questionnaire and the number of respondents was 207. The results showed that a majority of the employees in Kristianstad municipality wants to introduce smoke-free working. It was concluded that smoke-free working has strong links with smoking habits, the social environment and education.

Keywords: Smoking, attitude, social, educational attainment, participation.

Utvärderingsrapport för projektet Medarbetare i fokus2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Background: Health is an important concept that there are many different definitions of. There are definitions of Health believes that health is about feeling good and having a good ability to act. The concept highlights the importance of that every individual should have the opportunity to do what she values as important. People which are mentally retarded have limits they can no do what they want and live their lives in the same way as normal gifted can. These limitations are physical, mental and social. People which are mentally retarded are aging faster than normal gifted people. It is relevant to work to promote residents' health and work for a healthy aging to happen. Literature Review: Literature in the fields of mentally retarded, health and aging show that there is a need to work to promote healthy aging of the mentally retarded and therefore we find it interesting to work with this subject. Aim: To find out how a healthy life can be promoted with disabilities according to staff attitudes towards the mentally handicapped. Method: The study is qualitative and individual interviews were carried out at eight people who work on housing for the mentally retarded. The interviews were recorded on tape and then transcribed. The material was treated confidential. Results: Staff in the housing for mentally retarded emphasize the importance of eating healthy and being physically active. They mean that a good social life increases the chance of a healthy aging and that cultural activities have good effect on health. They also see that they themselves have an important part in promoting healthy aging of the mentally retarded. Discussion: Mentally retarded living in housing for the mentally retarded is dependent on the staff working there. Therefore the staff has an extremely important role in encouraging the residents' healths and works towards healthy aging. This they can do in a variety of ways both in terms of physical, mental and social health.

    Abstract [en]

The digitalization continues influencing the banking sector, which leads to increased competition, similar products provided by the banks and low switching barriers. The cost of recruiting a new customer is claimed to be five times more than retaining an existing one and customer loyalty is a key determinant for the banks long-term financial performance. Hence the ability to create lasting relationships is a competitive advantage in the banking sector. The importance of customer loyalty has long been acknowledged, however previous research has been limited in exploring customer loyalty in online banking to the same extant, due to the possibility for customers to use various online-banking services being limited until 2015. Previous studies have often described customer loyalty from the banks perspective and is conducted outside of Sweden. Unlike previous research, this study focuses on how customer loyalty is created in online-banking among Swedish SMEs. Since SMEs are assumed to grow and contribute to the banks long-term performance and since they stand for 99,9% of the firms operating in Sweden, there’s a great interest to the banks to understand which factors that influences the customer loyalty in online-banking among SMEs.

The empirical data was collected with a questionnaire, and the result of the study, based on 209 respondents, indicates that service quality and customer satisfaction have a significant positive influence on customer loyalty. This study concludes that in order to create long-lasting relationships, the Swedish banks should for example focus on developing user-friendly digital services and treat SMEs as valuable customers.

    Abstract [sv]

2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hur personer med ångest upplever taktil massage som behandlingsmetod2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background:Touch is an important part of nursing that the nurse applies naturally. Touch has a calming function and tactile massage can therefore be applied to calm patients with anxiety problems. Aim: The aim was to highlight how people with anxiety experience tactile massage as a treatment. Method: A literature review with a systematic approach was applied. The study is based on eleven scientific articles. Results: Individuals with anxiety disorders experience life as immense suffering. The massage brings a feeling of well being for body and soul into the person's chaos which also assists with scope to escape from time, space and thoughts. The massage entailed feelings of affirmation and respect which, however, also was seen as an infringement of the personal sphere. Discussion: To be experienced as chosen was seen as extremely valuable. Body and mind was significant for individual self-development and overall harmony. Privacy was important to point out since the body was perceived as a personal and private area. Conclusion: It is important that the nurse notes the effects of tactile massage. This leads to greater understanding and knowledge regarding the treatment that will allow a better and more optimal care offered.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden there has been an increase of suicide attempts for the last 20 years and every year almost 1 million people in the world die due to suicide. Many of these people have been in contact with healthcare personnel in the past because of previous suicide attempts. According to Ida Jean Orlando's theory of interaction, nurses react emotionally in the encounter with the patient and acts on these emotions, which directly influences the interaction. The aim of this essay was to examine nurses' attitudes towards patients who have tried to commit suicide. The study conducted was a literature review based on 13 articles checked using the audit template of Röda Korset. The themes of the study were: treatment: positive attitudes and negative attitudes, communication, environment and feelings. The findings discussed were the connection between experience and a positive attitude, that the nurses´ attitudes affected the patient and that open, direct communication of the suicide attempt was important. The nurse´s attitude does affect the interaction with the patient and it is important to work on improving nurses' and health-care personnel's attitudes toward this certain group of patients.

Density dependent survival of mallard ducklings in boreal lakes: a field experiment2003Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

From earlier field studies and experiments we have found that the nutrient status of lakes in the boreal region of northern Europe might influence the production of ducklings among dabbling ducks. For ducks, this might be important in the choice of breeding strategy. In this study we created a 2-year cross-over field experiment in northern Sweden where mallard hens and broods (10 ducklings) were introduced on 10 oligotrophic lakes (i.e. poor lakes) in two different densities; 4 hens with broods (high density) on 5 lakes and 1 hen with brood (low density) on the remaining 5 lakes. The adult ducks were wild birds, caught and brought to a game farm where they hatched their eggs. Within a few days after hatching they were released on the lakes in the beginning of June when wild mallards have their hatching peak. After introductions the survival of broods, ducklings and hens were monitored daily the first 12 days and then every third day until day 24. The second year there was a switch of treatments in the lakes. The results after one year indicate that the survival rates of broods, ducklings and hens are density dependent. In lakes with high densities of introduced mallards the survival rates was higher compared to low density lakes.

Experimentally manipulating early and late breeding in mallards2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We used imprinted ducklings and wing-clipped female mallards with broods as a complement to observational field studies. Because mallard ducklings search for food by themselves, the food searching efficiency and behaviour of imprinted ducklings and ducklings together with a wing-clipped female ought to reflect the general conditions in the lake they search for food, if not in a strict quantitative way, at least it should reflect the relative differences in conditions for the lakes used in the experiments. We were interested in why mallards start breeding so early and how climate change might influence early and late breeding ducks. In a cross over experiment conducted 2004 and 2005, we studied the result of releasing two sets of female mallards with ducklings. The first one was done close to the same time as wild mallards normally started their breeding season in the region. The other set of broods was delayed 12 days. The eggs for the late release of ducklings were kept at low temperature and 12 days later they were put under sitting mallard females. The hens and broods were subsequently released with an interval of 12 days (one brood in each of 10 lakes in the first release, and the late release in ten other lakes). The next year the lakes were reversed. Survival of ducklings was followed every day during the first 12 days, and later every 4 days up till 24 days. Invertebrates in the lakes were sampled as well (of both benthic and pelagic origins). The data are analyzed in relation to food abundance during the early and late part of the two breeding seasons.

Born to cope with climate change?: experimentally manipulated hatching time does not affect duckling survival in the mallard Anas platyrhynchos2011In: European Journal of Wildlife Research, ISSN 1612-4642, E-ISSN 1439-0574, Vol. 57, no 3, p. 505-516Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Two main hypotheses proposed to explain the seasonal decline in reproductive performance in birds are (1) deterioration of environmental conditions and (2) lower parental quality of late breeders. Previous experimental work addressing these hypotheses generally have problematic biases pertaining to delay of hatching, costs of re-laying and incubation, as well as variation in the quality of eggs, territories, offspring and parental traits. We address these biases in an experimental test of the timing hypothesis (i.e. (1) above) in a precocial bird. Using a 2-year cross-over design and game-farm mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) eggs originating from a number of hens and a standardised delay procedure, we introduced early and late broods with a foster female onto boreal oligotrophic lakes and monitored subsequent duckling survival. Standardised invertebrate sampling was done concurrently to get a measure of lake-level abundance of aquatic prey, a likely causative agent of putative seasonal difference in duckling survival. Survival data and covariates (duckling age; days) were analysed by an information theoretic approach. There was no effect of treatment (i.e. manipulation of hatching date) on duckling survival, which was higher in 2005 than in 2004. In contrast to observational studies from more seasonal wetlands, our experiment demonstrates that duckling survival on boreal lakes was not affected by a 12-day delay in hatching date. Since we did not find any consistent trends in abundance of aquatic prey, i.e. neither clear peaks nor differences between treatment periods, we hypothesise that moderate climate change has minor effects on resource abundance and hence also on mallard duckling survival in boreal environments.

Response of Mallard ducklings to variation in habitat quality: an experiment of food limitation2000In: Ecology, ISSN 0012-9658, E-ISSN 1939-9170, Vol. 81, no 2, p. 329-335Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Occurrence of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) pairs and broods was studied on 86 boreal lakes in two areas in south Finland during 1988-1997 (35 lakes) and 1989-1996 (51 lakes), and field experiments were conducted to determine whether food limitation is an important factor regulating population densities. In general, pairs and broods used and avoided the same lakes, but in both study areas, the proportion of lakes that were unoccupied every year was higher for broods (71% and 69%) than for pairs (26% and 31%). We hypothesized that lakes without breeding Mallards, and especially broods, were too poor to raise young in, and we tested that in field experiments on 22 lakes in boreal Sweden. Based on concentration of total phosphorus in the water, these lakes were divided into two groups: 11 "poor" lakes and 11 "rich" lakes. Mallard ducklings imprinted on humans were used to address brood-stage food limitation by studying mass change. Thirty-one individually marked ducklings were divided into three experimental groups: 12 ducklings were used in poor lakes, 12 ducklings in rich lakes, and 7 ducklings were used as controls receiving no experimental treatment in the field. Each group was studied in 11 daytime trials on 11 different lakes, except the control group which was kept in a pen with free access to food. Ducklings of all groups spent nights together as a big 31-individual group in the same pen and with free access to food. Ducklings foraging on poor lakes gained significantly less body mass than those feeding on rich lakes. At night, when ducklings of both groups had equal and free access to food, ducklings that had been feeding in a poor lake that day gained more mass than those that had been feeding in a rich lake. Overall, similar to 95% of daily mass gain was accounted for by daytime gain in the control group, the corresponding percentage was 35% in the rich-lake experimental group and 11% in the poor-lake experimental group. Thus, we have observational, as well as experimental, evidence to conclude that many boreal lakes are inferior breeding habitat for Mallards, especially during the brood stage. Our results suggest (1) that it is important to recognize at what stage of the yearly reproductive cycle food limitation may occur, (2) that brood stage may be more important than nesting stage for possible population limitation and regulation in breeding Mallards, and (3) that the reason why so many lakes in the boreal region lack breeding Mallards may be food limitation.

This article elucidates the professional dialogue between student teacher and supervisor and it´s conditions as a supervising method in professional academic education. The aim of the study is to discuss how students articulate the conditions of the professional dialogue and the positioning of themselves and supervisors are made. The student taped discussions were analysed. Inspired by positioning theory we analysed the students discussions in order to interpret and elevate patterns showing the conditions concerning the professional dialogues for the students teacher education. The main findings are the students positioning themselves as listener and the supervisor is positioned as communicator of rights, obligations and oughtness. The communicator is positioned to a great number of responsibilities in the professional dialogues and the listener is positioned themselves passive. The professional experienced knowledge and the scientific knowledge will integrate in professional dialogues to challenge the students in their future profession. The contents, form and function of the professional dialogue are situated the students workplace. The conditions of the professional dialogue may vary due to the specific terms that the supervisor have.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to describe how bank tellers have the opportunity to prevent money laundering by applying different decision theories. Theoretical and empirical method: The research method of the dissertation is qualitative, with an abductive approach. The chosen empirical method is semi-structured interviews where the respondents are selected with a subjective selction and a so called snowball selection. Theoretical approach: Behind the study are both international directives & recommendations and Swedish statutory laws of money laundering and financing of terrorism. We have also originated from existing theories about the importance of the regulation and theories about the risk-based regulation. The theoretical approach also contains three different decision theories. Conclusion: Our conclusion is that bank tellers think they have the right opportunities to prevent money laundering. But flaws in the management of money laundering show that the prerequisites are not sufficient.

Being disconnected from life: meanings of existential loneliness as narrated by frail older people2018In: Aging & Mental Health, ISSN 1360-7863, E-ISSN 1364-6915, Vol. 22, no 10, p. 1357-1364Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVES: This study illuminated the meanings of existential loneliness (EL) as narrated by frail older people.

METHOD: Data were collected through individual narrative interviews with 23 people 76-101 years old receiving long-term care and services. A phenomenological hermeneutical analysis was performed, including a naïve reading and two structural analyses as a basis for a comprehensive understanding of EL.

RESULT: Four themes were identified related to meanings of EL: (1) being trapped in a frail and deteriorating body; (2) being met with indifference; (3) having nobody to share life with; and (4) lacking purpose and meaning. These intertwined themes were synthesized into a comprehensive understanding of EL as 'being disconnected from life'.

CONCLUSION: Illness and physical limitation affects access to the world. When being met with indifference and being unable to share one's thoughts and experiences of life with others, a sense of worthlessness is reinforced, triggering an experience of meaninglessness and EL, i.e. disconnection from life. It is urgent to develop support strategies that can be used by health care professionals to address older people in vulnerable situations, thereby facilitating connectedness.

Being acknowledged by others and bracketing negative thoughts and feelings: frail older people's narrations of how existential loneliness is eased.2019In: International Journal of Older People Nursing, ISSN 1748-3735, E-ISSN 1748-3743, Vol. 14, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe how EL was eased, as narrated by frail older people.

BACKGROUND: Existential loneliness (EL) is an unavoidable part of the human condition. It is a complex phenomenon that has been described as disconnection from life. If EL is acknowledged in the care of older people, the experience of EL can be reduced.

DESIGN: In this qualitative study, we used an exploratory and descriptive design.

METHODS: The study was based on 22 narrative interviews with frail older people, 76 to 101 years old, who were receiving long-term care and services. We analysed the data using conventional content analysis.

RESULTS: Being acknowledged by others, that is, being the focus of others' concern, eased the experience of EL, as did encountering intimacy and having meaningful exchanges of thoughts and feelings. Further, EL was pushed into the background and eased when participants could bracket negative thoughts and feelings, that is, when they could adjust and accept the present situation, view life in the rear-view mirror, be in contact with spiritual dimensions and withdraw and distract themselves.

CONCLUSION: Existential loneliness can be eased by experiencing meaningful togetherness with others and oneself when something else comes to the forefront, pushing EL to the background. Frail older peoples' opportunities to ease EL may be facilitated by health care staff (HCS) providing person-centred care and create possibilities for solitary time and meaningful togetherness.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: If frail older people's ongoing processes of adjusting and accepting their situation are understood and confirmed by people in their environment, for example, by nurses, family and friends, the experience of living a meaningful life can be supported, which, in turn, can ease EL.

Fria laborationer - en attitydundersökning2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Previous research shows that nature can contribute to health development and shows a correlation between people's level of activity, mental health and access to nature environments. Today we see a growing number of new operations in both the private enterprise and the public sector where nature is used as a resource for health promotion and prevention. Since the phenomenon is fairly new, descriptions of the area are poor. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate how the nature and health promotion work are carried out by different actors in Sweden. Method: Qualitative approach was chosen as the data collection method. Six interviews were conducted with actors working in the field of nature and health promotion. The interviews used semi structured interview guide. The interviews were analyzed by content analysis. Results: The results showed that the respondents use nature as a resource in their business operations, both as a room, a tool and as a symbol. The activities played a complex role since they both had a symbolic value and was used as a concrete tool. The actors however felt a strong personal wellbeing at their work and that it is a growing industry with good opportunities to conduct business in the future. Conclusion: The area of nature and health promotion occupations is a broad field and involves diverse activities regard to activities, offers and specializations. The study also shows that the area's pedagogical orientations, differs from previous educational approaches in similar areas by focusing on how nature can be used as a health promotion tool.

A qualitative study of women's experiences of home birth in Sweden.2006In: Midwifery, ISSN 0266-6138, E-ISSN 1532-3099, Vol. 22, no 4, p. 348-355Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: to illuminate the experiences of women who have given birth at home.

METHODS: a descriptive design with a qualitative approach based on interviews with 12 women. The text was analysed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic method.

FINDINGS: giving birth at home meant preserved authority and autonomy whereby the women themselves ruled the situation. The women's experiences of giving birth at home can be divided into three themes, with internal variations viewed as sub-themes. The main themes were as follows: 'having faith in one's own competence'; 'choosing support on one's own terms'; and 'being at home'. The experience embraced an earthly dimension, represented by reliance on inherent natural forces, and an existential, spiritual dimension, represented by faith in life itself, expressed in terms of the sacredness of giving birth, a heavenly experience, and wisdom about life itself.

CONCLUSION: the experience of giving birth at home seems to differ from findings of studies focusing on the experience of giving birth in hospital. A reasonable goal for maternity care in hospital could, however, be that all women should have the opportunity to give birth on their own terms in a supportive and calm environment, surrounded by people who can assist if needed.

A systematic study of gene mutations in urothelial carcinoma: inactivating mutations in TSC2 and PIK3R12011In: PloS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 6, no 4, p. e18583-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Our data demonstrate a significant association between FGFR3 and PIK3CA mutations in UC. Moreover, the identification of mutations in PIK3R1 further emphasizes the importance of the PI3-kinase pathway in UC. The presence of TSC2 mutations, in addition to TSC1 mutations, underlines the involvement of mTOR signaling in UC.

The significance of walking from the perspective of people with Parkinson's disease2014In: Journal of Parkinson's Disease, ISSN 1877-7171, E-ISSN 1877-718X, Vol. 4, no 4, p. 657-663Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with progressive mobility and walking difficulties. Although these aspects have been found to be central from a patient perspective, the perceived significance of walking is less well understood. Objective: To explore the significance of walking as perceived and experienced by individuals with PD. Methods: Eleven persons with PD (seven men; median age, 71 years; median PD duration, 7 years) participated. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, which were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were qualitatively analysed by systematic text condensation. Results: The ability to walk had a complex and multifaceted impact on the participants, including physical, psychological and emotional aspects as well as on the ability to be active in daily life and to participate in society. The central role of coping strategies was prominent in filtering emotional reactions to physical changes, and when managing the activities and participation in everyday situations. The sense of unpredictability, uncertainty and loss of control were underlying phenomena in all categories. Furthermore, inability to manage walking difficulties had a negative impact on the participants' self-concept. Conclusions: The central meaning of being able to walk appears to be intimately linked to an individual's social identity, emotional well-being and integrity. Consequently, being able to walk independently was a prerequisite to an autonomous life and participation in society. This implies that rehabilitation and other mobility interventions also need to consider individual emotional, psychological, and social implications, and to facilitate appropriate compensatory and coping strategies.

    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: To identify motor and non-motor symptoms independently associated with distress in Parkinson's disease (PD).

METHOD: Clinical and patient-reported data from 118 people with PD (mean age and PD-duration, 64 and 8 years) were analyzed regarding associations with patient-reported distress using multiple regressions (controlling for age).

RESULTS: Non-motor symptoms independently associated with distress were pain, fatigue, sleep, depression and anxiety (R(2), 0.81). The only significant motor aspect was mobility (R(2), 0.31). When considering both motor and non-motor symptoms, fatigue, pain, depression and sleep showed independent associations with distress (R(2), 0.76).

CONCLUSION: Distress in PD is primarily associated with non-motor features.

Fall risk and its associated factors among older adults without home help services in a Swedish municipality2016In: Journal of Community Health Nursing, ISSN 0737-0016, E-ISSN 1532-7655, Vol. 33, no 4, p. 181-189Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During preventive home visits, the purpose of this study was, to identify the prevalence of fall risk and any associated factors. Participants (n=1471) were cognitively sound community-dwelling older adults (≥ 70 years) without home-help service, living in a Swedish municipality. The Downton Fall Risk Index and nine single items were used. Tiredness/fatigue, age ≥ 80, inability to walk one hour, inability to climb stairs and worrying were significantly associated with fall risk. Preventive home visits incorporating fall risk screening proved valuable, providing information for interventions aimed at preventing falls, maintaining independence and facilitating health among community dwelling participants.

Growing up with a disability following paralytic poliomyelitis: experiences from persons with late effects of polio2019In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To describe the experiences of growing up after acute paralytic poliomyelitis and strategies used to adapt to the new situation. Methods: Seven women and seven men (mean age 70 years, min-max 61-78 years) with late effects of polio, who had contracted paralytic polio in their childhood. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed by systematic text condensation. Results: Memories of contracting acute paralytic poliomyelitis involved being immobilized and sent away from home for surgical and physiotherapeutic treatment. Growing up in a social context that was often tough and unfriendly resulted in the development of strategies, such as optimistic thinking, trying to blend in, trusting one's ability to manage, and to handle the preconceptions and expectations of others. At the onset of late effects of polio, some of these strategies were still functioning, whereas overachieving, disregarding pain, and weariness were not. Conclusion: The challenges of growing up with a disability following paralytic polio led to the development of various psychological strategies for managing daily life. By understanding these experiences and strategies, knowledge may be gained in assisting rehabilitation professionals to better support persons with late effects of polio in adapting to the new situation. Implications for rehabilitation At the onset of late effects of polio, strategies developed earlier in life, such as overachieving, disregarding pain, and weariness, may not function anymore. Understanding the experiences of growing up with poliomyelitis can support rehabilitation professionals to provide targeted interventions for people with late effects of polio and enable them to develop new adaptive strategies. Developing new strategies, such as accepting increased symptoms, and augmenting self-esteem and self-efficacy, may improve daily functioning among people with late effects of polio.
