    Abstract [en]

Associations of dietary intake, anthropometric measurements and depression among three birth cohorts of 70-year-olds examined 1992-2016 Authors: Jessica Samuelsson¹, Ingmar Skoog¹, Anna Zettergren¹, Elisabet Rothenberg², 1Neuropsychiatric Epidemiology Unit, Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Sahlgrenska Academy, Centre for Ageing and Health (AGECAP) at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. ² Food and Meal Science, Kristianstad University, Kristianstad, Sweden Abstract Objectives: To examine associations between dietary intakes, anthropometric measurements and depression among three samples of 70-year-olds examined 1992-93 (birth cohort 1922), 2000-02 (birth cohort 1930) and 2014-16 (birth cohort 1944). Methods: Data was derived from the Longitudinal Gerontological and Geriatric Population Study in Gothenburg, Sweden and the Population Study of Women in Gothenburg. A total of 1524 individuals participated in both the psychiatric and the dietary examination (60% women and 40 % men). Major depression was diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Minor depression was diagnosed according to DSM-IV-TR research criteria. Dietary intake was determined by the diet history method, estimating food intake during the preceding three months. Height, body weight and BMI were also determined. Linear regressions were calculated and analyses were adjusted for gender. Results: In the 1992-93 examination (including only women) 19% were diagnosed with either major or minor depression, 13% (9% of the men and 15% of the women) in the 2000-02 examination were diagnosed with either major or minor depression and 8% (6 % of the men and 9% of the women) were diagnosed with either major or minor depression in the 2014-16 examination. There were no significant associations between depression and energy- and nutrient intake, height, weight and BMI among women examined 1992-93. There were significant associations between depression and higher energy-, carbohydrate- and iron intakes in the 2000-02 examination (≤p=0.05). There were a significant associations between depression and higher energy-, fat-, and calcium intakes in the 2014-16 examination (p=≤0,05). Conclusions: Preliminary results indicate that there could be an association between dietary intake and depression among older adults. Further analyses will be conducted examining the association between depression and dietary patterns, waist circumference, energy expenditure and physical activity. Analyses of longitudinal data will also be conducted on 85 year-olds examined 2016 (birth cohort 1930).

ESPEN 2018 Abstract Submission Topic: Nutritional epidemiology Abstract Submission Identifier: ESPEN18-ABS-1511 ALCOHOL AND DIETARY INTAKE AMONG 70-YEAR-OLDS – RESULTS FROM THE GOTHENBURG H70 BIRTH COHORT STUDIES J. Samuelsson*, 1, A. Zettergren 1, E. Rothenberg 2, F. Ahlner 1, I. Skoog 1 1Neuropsychiatric Epidemiology Unit, Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, Sahlgrenska Academy, Centre for Ageing and Health (AGECAP) at the University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, 2Food and Meal Science, Kristianstad University, Kristianstad, Sweden Rationale: A higher intake of alcohol has been associated with a lower quality of diet. There are indications that alcohol consumption is increasing in older adults, but studies examining the relation between alcohol and dietary patterns in older adults are limited. We aim to investigate the relation between diet quality and alcohol intake in two samples of 70-year-olds examined 2000-02 and 2014-16. Methods: Data was derived from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies and the Population Study of Women in Gothenburg, Sweden. A total of 1415 individuals participated in the dietary examinations (56% women). Alcohol and dietary intake was determined by the diet history method, estimating total food intake during the preceding three months. Determinants of a high quality diet and values of high and low alcohol intake were based on the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2012. Relations between alcohol consumption and dietary intake were investigated, within each birth cohort stratified by sex, using linear regressions adjusted for energy and BMI. Results: Alcohol intake has increased (p=< 0, 05), 15% of the women and 21% of the men had a higher alcohol intake in the 2000-02 examination and 33% of the women and 32% of the men had a higher intake in the 2014- 16 examination. There were less dietary intake differences in women within both birth cohorts, but the results indicate that men and women with a higher intake of alcohol had a higher intake of energy and fish/shellfish, but a lower intake of carbohydrates, fibre, fruits and vegetables, sweets and snacks (p=<0,05). Conclusions: Preliminary results support the notion that alcohol intake in older adults has increased, but results do not indicate that dietary intake overall is of lower quality in those with a higher intake of alcohol. Further analyses will be conducted and longitudinal data will be added. Disclosure of Interest: None Declared Keywords: alcohol, dietary pattern

SUN-P049: Nordic Healthy Diet and Mortality in a Cohort of 70 Year-Old Swedes: What is the Contribution of Dairy Intake?2017In: Clinical Nutrition, ISSN 0261-5614, Vol. 36, p. S71-Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Rationale: Several definitions of the Nordic Healthy Diet havebeen proposed, but there is no consensus on the role of dairy products. We aim to study the impact of the Nordic diet on all- cause mortality in a population of 70 year-olds, exploring different versions of a Nordic Healthy Diet Score (NHDS) with focus on the specific role of key dairy products.

Methods: Cox proportional hazard models, adjusted for potential confounders, were used to assess the prediction of all-cause mortality using two NHDS definitions (calculated either including low-fat or without dairy products). In separate Cox models, cheese intake and the combined intakes of milk, soured milk and unsweetened yoghurt were tested as well as intake of fat from these two sources.

Results: Neither of the standard versions of NHDS was associated with mortality. However, cheese intake was pro- tective of total mortality, whereas milk products (including soured milk and unsweetened yoghurt) predicted increased risk of mortality. Cheese fat intake was also inversely associated with mortality, whereas fat from the other dairy products positively predicted the outcome only when the model was adjusted by energy intake.

Conclusion: The NHDS, as previously defined, was not associated with all-cause mortality in this population of elderly[GT1] Swedes. Intake of milk, soured milk and/or unsweetened yoghurt was positively associated with all-cause mortality whereas cheese intake was inversely associated with this outcome.

Potatisfibers inverkan på bröd: hur påverkas deg och bröd av potatisfiberns malningsgrad?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: The potato fiber constitutes about 1 % of the weight of the potato and is a residual product in the manufacture of potato starch. Today, several well-known companies add potato fiber to their products. The main reason for this is because the fiber can bind liquid 7–12 times its own weight, which gives an economic advantage.

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate how the grind of potato fiber affects selected characteristics in dough and bread, with particularly focus on the storage stability of the bread.

    Method:

    • Pilot tests
    • Observations of dough characteristics
    • Measure of water exchange and bread volume
    • Instrumental color measurement with a colorimeter
    • Sensory evaluation of storage stability

Results: Pilot tests with both grinds of potato fiber showed that when comparing pre-treatments such as scalding, soaking and direct addition into the dough, a direct addition resulted with the most advantages, mainly regarding the softness of the dough. During the observations there was a visible difference in color between the potato fiber loaves and the reference loaf, which was not ensured in the instrumental color measurement. The volume and water retention in the bread was not affected by an addition of potato fiber. The sensory evaluation showed a perceived dryness for bread with added potato fiber (both grinds), when tested against a reference bread. The finely ground fiber affected the storage stability more than the coarse grounded fiber did.

Conclusion: The grind gave no notable differences on the selected properties of dough and bread. The impact that grind had on dough characteristics and the finished bread were small.

    Abstract [en]

In 1934 Torsten Fogelqvist, a prominent member of the Swedish Academy and a well-known journalist and intellectual, visits Nazi Germany. He writes about his visit to the Third Reich in 17 articles published in the Stockholm daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. The author, highly critical of the Hitler regime, scrutinizes several aspects of the nazified German society such as the attempts to re-educate the German citizen in accordance with the ideology of the new regime, the hero cult in the Nazi movement, and the relationship between the German state and the churches. In order to further an understanding of political and social developments in Germany Fogelqvist uses a specific strategy. He “translates” them into an imaginary Swedish context. This paper compares his views with those of other Swedish visitors.

1 1/2 mil härifrån står världens största slag: Gustaf Hellström som korrespondent i första världskrigets Frankrike2014Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Motiverande samtal enligt MI-metoderna: användbarhet och begränsningar2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The reason of people visiting health care centers often depends on their health behavior. They often need to make a change. The aim of the study: The aim of the study was to describe in which way motivational interviewing has been successful to make lifestyle changes. Method: The study was carried out as a literature review. Associations were made with three of the theories which motivational interviewing is based upon: Bem’s "Self perception theory", Roger’s "Non-directive counseling theory" and "The transtheoretical model of behavior change". Result: The nurse made use of the MI techniques by actively listening, asking open questions and encouraging the patients to take their own responsibility. The limitations, from the nurse’s point of view were problems with the new way of thinking. Extended training and coaching in MI were important for the implementation activities. The studies included showed in most cases that MI as a method wasn´t more effective than any other type of counseling. Conclusion: In MI it´s crucial to put the focus on the patient, to help the patient find the motivation and confidence to make changes. For the implementation of MI it is important to include education, practice and coaching sessions.

    Abstract [sv]

Undersökningen genomfördes i fem niondeklasser i Etiopien.

    Abstract [en]

Background: The statistics for child vaccinations in Sweden are high, only a few parents choose not to follow the Swedish vaccination program. However, previous studies show that parents can have questions and opinions regarding the vaccines content and effects. From the BVC nurses experience of the parent´s questions and opinions in relation to the vaccination of their child at the BVC, a BVC nurse can through this study be better equipped to meet parents. This should be able to contribute to creating additional sense of security with regards to the vaccination of the child. Goal: The aim of this study was to analyse the BVC nurses experience of a parent´s questions and opinions in relation to the vaccination of their child at the BVC. Method: The study has a qualitative inductive approach. Fourteen semi-structured interviews were carried out with BVC nurses that have worked at a BVC for a duration of one to 37 years. The data material was analysed with the help of qualitative content analysis. Result: The result shows that a parent´s questions and opinions more than ever tend to revolve around both handling traditional questions regarding pain and side effects and an ever more trending challenge as the high information stream that parents meet today. The result is summarised in two categories; Questions and opinions regarding whether to vaccinate or not and Questions and opinions regarding the vaccine and its consequences. Conclusion: Previous studies show that BVC nurses have experience with regards to the parents that have questions and opinions about vaccines. The study can contribute with considerate knowledge of how parent´s search for information and in such case gice possibilities for improvement.

Inter-organizational cooperation: a rehabilitation project based on cooperation between health care and three social service agencies2014In: Health, ISSN 1949-4998, E-ISSN 1949-5005, Vol. 6, no 5, p. 342-349Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Cooperation between organizations is an often-suggested remedy for handling unsolved borderland problems. However, actual projects aiming at cooperation are seldom very successful. The purpose here is to highlight obstacles related to cooperation between different organizations based on a case study of a rehabilitation project where health care and several social service organizations (social insurance, social welfare, and the local employment agency) were involved. Data were gathered through participation and interviews. Findings: It seems that efficient cooperation requires an understanding of the participating organizations’ differences in work logic as well as work practices. Furthermore, only certain fairly standardized “normal” problems may be handled through organized cooperation while non-routine exceptional problem requires a more fully integrated work organization. Implications: Obstacles to cooperation are highlighted and ways to improve the possibilities of cooperation between organizations are suggested although such possibilities are generally hampered by differences in work logic.

Tree and Shrub Expansion Over the Past 34 Years at the Tree-Line Near Abisko, Sweden2011In: Ambio, ISSN 0044-7447, E-ISSN 1654-7209, Vol. 40, no 6, p. 683-692Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Shrubs and trees are expected to expand in the sub-Arctic due to global warming. Our study was conducted in Abisko, sub-arctic Sweden. We recorded the change in coverage of shrub and tree species over a 32– to 34-year period, in three 50 × 50 m plots; in the alpine-tree-line ecotone. The cover of shrubs and trees (<3.5 cm diameter at breast height) were estimated during 2009–2010 and compared with historical documentation from 1976 to 1977. Similarly, all tree stems (≥3.5 cm) were noted and positions determined. There has been a substantial increase of cover of shrubs and trees, particularly dwarf birch (Betula nana), and mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii), and an establishment of aspen (Populus tremula). The other species willows (Salix spp.), juniper (Juniperus communis), and rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) revealed inconsistent changes among the plots. Although this study was unable to identify the causes for the change in shrubs and small trees, they are consistent with anticipated changes due to climate change and reduced herbivory.

Hue combinations in web design for Swedish and Thai users: Guidelines for combining color hues onscreen for Swedish and Thai users in the context of designing web sites2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Users can assess the visual appeal of a web page within 50 milliseconds and color is the first thing noticed onscreen. That directly influences user perception of the website, and choosing appealing color combinations is therefore crucial for successful web design. Recent scientific research has identified which individual colors are culturally preferred in web design in different countries but there is no similar research on hue combinations. Currently no effective, scientifically based guidelines on combining hues for web designers exist either, since recent research by Ou et al and Szabo et al, among others, proves the classic color harmonies invalid. Therefore this study aims to identify guidelines for culturally appropriate hue combination in context of web design. The study is limited to culturally appropriate combining of hues in Thai and Swedish web design.

Hue combinations for the web: towards a repertoire of design guidelines for combining color hues based on cultural background2019In: ICCTA 2019 Proceedings of the 2019 5th International Conference on Computer and Technology Applications, New York, 2019, p. 63-70Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Existing research shows that users tend to assess the visual appeal of a web page within 50 ms and color is the first thing that is noticed on a screen. This directly influences the user's perception of a website, and a choice of appealing color combinations may, therefore, be crucial in successful web design. This article aims to identify, formulate, and evaluate design guidelines to support designers in the process of combining color hues for websites in the context of the Swedish and Thai cultures. A quantitative approach was used to evaluate the proposed design guidelines. The results show that culture plays a role in the evaluation of color hue combinations; Thai participants rated Thai designs significantly more highly than the Swedish participants, but the reverse was not true, and Thai designs were rated more highly than Swedish designs by all participants. The results may have implications for practitioners working in the field of web design and for the broader debate of cultural influence on color preference.

Andraspråksinlärning – betydelsen av naturlig inlärning hos andraspråkselever 2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Gothenburg H70 Birth cohort study 2014-16: design, methods and study population.2019In: European Journal of Epidemiology, ISSN 0393-2990, E-ISSN 1573-7284, Vol. 34, no 2, p. 191-209Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

To improve health care for older persons, we need to learn more about ageing, e.g. identify protective factors and early markers for diseases. The Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies (the H70 studies) are multidisciplinary epidemiological studies examining representative birth cohorts of older populations in Gothenburg, Sweden. So far, six birth cohorts of 70-year-olds have been examined over time, and examinations have been virtually identical between studies. This paper describes the study procedures for the baseline examination of the Birth cohort 1944, conducted in 2014-16. In this study, all men and women born 1944 on specific dates, and registered as residents in Gothenburg, were eligible for participation (n = 1839). A total of 1203 (response rate 72.2%; 559 men and 644 women; mean age 70.5 years) agreed to participate in the study. The study comprised sampling of blood and cerebrospinal fluid, psychiatric, cognitive, and physical health examinations, examinations of genetics and family history, use of medications, social factors, functional ability and disability, physical fitness and activity, body composition, lung function, audiological and ophthalmological examinations, diet, brain imaging, as well as a close informant interview, and qualitative studies. As in previous examinations, data collection serves as a basis for future longitudinal follow-up examinations. The research gained from the H70 studies has clinical relevance in relation to prevention, early diagnosis, clinical course, experience of illness, understanding pathogenesis and prognosis. Results will increase our understanding of ageing and inform service development, which may lead to enhanced quality of care for older persons.
