    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediators' views on their work; mediation by reason of the breach. The starting point was to find out the mediator's approach and attitude in relation to the perpetrator and victim, and the prevailing regulatory framework. After review of the literature, we came to the realization that knowledge of this area was very limited and thus presents an unexplored topic. It emerged from the results that the mediators emphasize the importance of maintaining impartiality and neutrality in the process of mediation and that it is important to create a good relationship with both parties. The methods used by the mediators is not so different much about, but the mediators apply Crime Prevention Council handbook. Since mediation is a rather lonely profession when they are not very many, are the mediators to network with other municipalities to exchange experiences and knowledge and through this develop their professional role and mediation activities.

Stolthet eller fördom: en studie om svenska konsumenters attityd till svenska viner2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Introducion

Southern Sweden is an emerging wine region. Two things have made wine growing possible on our latitude: slowly rising temperature and new crossings of hereditary grape varieties. Grapes is a culturally new product in the Swedish farming landscape, which requires an introductory period. Consumers in an emerging wine region are faced with a tough choice between more familiar, non-local wines and new locally produced wines. This work is aimed at researching Swedish consumers attitude towards locally produced wines.

    Background

Despite the importance of understanding new markets, it is often assumed that local residents automatically accept local products. However, this is not always the case. Consumers' attitude to local wines in the emerging wine region is of great value to local wine producers, as their attitude affects whether positive information about new products will spread among potential customers.

    Purpose

The purpose is to examine Swedish consumers' attitude to Swedish wines.

    Method

    Web survey

    Results

Result shows that there are more women than men who have tasted Swedish wines. 47% of those who have tasted have positive attitude, 29% did not think it is woth the money and 13% did not like the taste.

    Conclusion

The majority of respondents have a positive attitude towards Swedish wines.

    Abstract [sv]

Independent innovation in the evolution of paddle-shaped tails in viviparous sea snakes (Elapidae Hydrophiinae)2012In: Integrative and Comparative Biology, ISSN 1540-7063, E-ISSN 1557-7023, Vol. 52, no 2, p. 311-320Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The viviparous sea snakes (Hydrophiinae) comprise ∼90% of living marine reptiles and display many physical and behavioral adaptations for breathing, diving, and achieving osmotic balance in marine habitats. Among the most important innovations found in marine snakes are their paddle-shaped (dorsoventrally expanded) tails, which provide propulsive thrust in the dense aquatic medium. Here, we reconstruct the evolution of caudal paddles in viviparous sea snakes using a dated molecular phylogeny for all major lineages and computed tomography of internal osteological structures. Bayesian ancestral state reconstructions show that extremely large caudal paddles supported by elongated vertebral processes are unlikely to have been present in the most recent common ancestor of extant sea snakes. Instead, these characters appear to have been acquired independently in two highly marine lineages of relatively recent origin. Both the Aipysurus and Hydrophis lineages have elongated neural spines that support the dorsal edge of their large paddles. However, whereas in the Aipysurus lineage the ventral edge of the paddle is supported by elongated haemapophyses, this support is provided by elongated and ventrally directed pleurapophyses in the Hydrophis lineage. Three semi-marine lineages (Hydrelaps, Ephalophis, and Parahydrophis) form the sister group to the Hydrophis clade and have small paddles with poorly developed dorsal and ventral supports, consistent with their amphibious lifestyle. Overall, our results suggest that not only are the viviparous hydrophiines the only lineage of marine snakes to have acquired extremely large, skeletally supported caudal paddles but also that this innovation has occurred twice in the group in the past ∼2–6 million years.

Aipysurus mosaicus, a new species of egg-eating sea snake (Elapidae: Hydrophiinae), with a redescription of Aipysurus eydouxii (Gray, 1849)2012In: Zootaxa, ISSN 1175-5326, E-ISSN 1175-5334, no 3431, p. 1-18Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We describe a new species of egg-eating sea snake, Aipysurus mosaicus sp. nov., from northern Australia and southern New Guinea. This species was previously considered to be an allopatric population of A. eydouxii, which occurs throughout the Sunda Shelf and in New Guinea. Molecular analyses reveal these two species to be sister lineages with fixed nucleotide substitutions at three independent mitochondrial and nuclear loci, and a deep phylogenetic divergence exceeding that of all other sampled species pairs in Aipysurus. Aipysurus mosaicus sp. nov. is also distinguished from A. eydouxii by morphological characters relating to scalation (e.g. number of ventral scales), colour pattern (e.g. number and shape of transverse body bands), internal soft anatomy (e.g. position of heart in relation to ventral scales), and skeletal morphology (e.g. shape of nasal and caudal neural spines). Additional sampling is needed to clarify the extent of geographic contact between A. eydouxii and the new species in New Guinea where they appear to be sympatric. It is likely that the boundaries between these taxa will be mirrored in other coastal sea snakes with ranges spanning the deep waters of the Timor Trench; discovery of such cryptic species will have important implications for conservation of this highly diverse but relatively poorly studied group of marine vertebrates.

Recent rapid speciation and ecomorph divergence in Indo-Australian sea snakes2013In: Molecular Ecology, ISSN 0962-1083, E-ISSN 1365-294X, Vol. 22, no 10, p. 2742-2759Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The viviparous sea snakes (Hydrophiinae) are a young radiation of at least 62 species that display spectacular morphological diversity and high levels of local sympatry. To shed light on the mechanisms underlying sea snake diversification, we investigated recent speciation and eco-morphological differentiation in a clade of four nominal species with overlapping ranges in Southeast Asia and Australia. Analyses of morphology and stomach contents identified the presence of two distinct ecomorphs: a ‘macrocephalic’ ecomorph that reaches >2 m in length, has a large head and feeds on crevice-dwelling eels and gobies; and a ‘microcephalic’ ecomorph that rarely exceeds 1 m in length, has a small head and narrow fore-body and hunts snake eels in burrows. Mitochondrial sequences show a lack of reciprocal monophyly between ecomorphs and among putative species. However, individual assignment based on newly developed microsatellites separated co-distributed specimens into four significantly differentiated clusters corresponding to morphological species designations, indicating limited recent gene flow and progress towards speciation. A coalescent species tree (based on mitochondrial and nuclear sequences) and isolation-migration model (mitochondrial and microsatellite markers) suggest between one and three transitions between ecomorphs within the last approximately 1.2 million to approximately 840 000 years. In particular, the macrocephalic ‘eastern’ population of Hydrophis cyanocinctus and microcephalic H. melanocephalus appear to have diverged very recently and rapidly, resulting in major phenotypic differences and restriction of gene flow in sympatry. These results highlight the viviparous sea snakes as a promising system for speciation studies in the marine environment.

Förskolans hälsofrämjande arbete mot barnövervikt och fetma2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ecological Politics in Swedish Poetry of the 1980s2006In: Poetry & Politics: abstracts, 2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the ‘70s and ‘80s the environmental movement grew strong in Sweden – mainly due to the results of an ongoing discussion concerning nuclear power, which resulted in a referendum in 1981. This occasion coincided with the ending of fifteen years of left wing domination of the Swedish literary debate and production. Politically, though, the leftist activist authors – often of a Maoist or Leninist creed – became more engaged in questions concerning sustainable development, and national and international questions of pollution and unbalanced ecology. This new sphere of political debates and activity were taken up by poets that had made their marks as progressive in the 60s and 70s. One of them is Göran Palm (1931 - ), who in 1984 published the first part of his book length blank-verse poem, Sweden: A Winter’s Tale. The poem is inspired by Heinrich Heine’s 1844 epic poem Deutschland: Ein Wintermärchen; a text saturated by Heine’s own experiences of the repressive German policies that had forced him into exile.

This paper will use Palm’s poem that was completed in 2005, as a paradigmatic example of the ecological turn in Swedish Poetry of the late 20th century. The methodological and theoretical base of the paper is the discussions about an ecocritical literary criticism, sprung from the environmental movements in Western Europe and in the US. Main thinkers of this theory that I will use as a tool for my historical interpretations are (e. g.) Jonathan Bate, Terry Gifford, and Sheryl Glotfelty.

Rhetoric of containment in the nature writing of a political activist2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The nature writing of Swedish author/biologist Stefan Edman (1946-) is shaped by a mainstream political agenda. Simultaneously it gives voice to aesthetic and spiritual reflections on nature's processes and on environmental change. This paper focuses on how Edman's texts function, through rhetoric, scientific clarification and ethical positioning, as both an integral part of an established political context, and as a reflective and critical instance, addressing environmental issues.

Edman has for several years upheld a position at the center of Swedish politics; apart from being one of the major nature writers of this and the last century, he is the author of governmental investigations, and closely associated to the Social Democratic Party and one of the originators behind "the green welfare state" during Prime Minister Goran Persson's reign (1996-2006). In this paper analyses are made of Edman's nature writing and his work is  contextualized with the intent to demonstrate the specific political significance of the texts' different modes, with particular attention taken to the key concepts 'limited resources' and 'sustainable development'.

It is interesting to note that the Social Democrats are the political platform Edman have chosen to forward his message. The effects of this is that the public areas in which he acts as a writer are closely associated with a political power that eagerly supported (e.g.) the industrial exploitation of forests. This complex relationship is based on a merging of, rather than a collision of, two discourses â€" the ethical stance of nature writing, and a political discourse that calls for change of the existing social structures. To some extent, this merging of discourses is uniquely Swedish due to the fact that the Social Democratic Party during much of the 1900s and the first years of the 2000s were basically monopolistic in their exercise of power. For the environmental writer Edman this meant he had to work inside of the given power structures, and utter his criticism of the prevailing environmental agenda within the (then) governing party.

Stefan Edman is also active in 'the Fraternity Movement', a Christian formation closely connected to the Social Democrats. His Christian faith finds its way into his texts as a spiritual feeling and awareness. The awareness relies on the Christian idea of a certain human responsibility for the earth, but also in the Reformed churches often radical political agenda in the Northern European secular societies. The type of nature writing created in connection to these religious and political manifestations is challenging 'recognizing the need to transform society's way of life' but yet not so challenging or questioning that they may be perceived as problematic in relation to political power.

The texts of Edman that I will pay attention to in this paper are drawn from his later work and provide examples of how he is using rhetoric and multimodal effects to combine environmental expertise with political activism and spiritual experience. 'Gläntor'[Glades] of 1997 takes as its starting point the Swede as a forest dweller and the importance of the forest glade as a natural room for contemplation and of being a place where ecological richness is given space to thrive. 'Västerut' [Westbound] (2000) has a similar theme, while 'Solvarv' [Solar Cycle] (1993) is based on seasonal wanderings and thus contemplates nature's circular processes. I will further explore into texts which more explicitly describe the spiritual experiences made by the protagonist on nature walks, such as 'Förundran' [Amazement] (2006), 'Darwin och Vår Herre' [Darwin and our Lord] (2009) 'Jorden och själens överlevnad' [The Earth and the Survival of the Soul] (2008) and the essay 'Guds hjärtslag i skapelsen' [God's heartbeat heard in the creation] in the anthology 'Gå med Gud' (1999).

The theoretical basis of my paper includes Ursula Heise' 'Sense of Place and Sense of Planet' and Satterfield and Slovic (eds.) 'What is Nature Worth', as well as models of discursive analysis.

The intermediality of field guides2007Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Being a true, border-crossing genre, the field guides to birds provides a hitherto unexplored field for the scholar of intermediality. In the field guide descriptive prose is combined with images, maps, and transcriptions of birdsong. The images show a variety of attitudes towards birds as objects of art, ranging from very straight-forward paintings modelled on stuffed specimens, to vivid free-hand sketches capturing the birds in their natural habitat. The stances of the texts also differ – from anthropocentric views on the life of certain birds, to more or less scientific micro-articles. A certain, very peculiar form of transcription, offers the different examples of the author to transfer bird-song to text, a try that sometimes approach the domains of concrete poetry. This presentation primarily focuses on two Swedish field guides: Erik Rosenbergs Fåglar i Sverige (The Birds of Sweden), and Lars Jonsson’s Fåglar i Europa (The Birds of Europe), and explores the contextual differences and similarities that exist between them. Theoretical background for this presentation is the contemporary field of ecocriticism, as specified by scholars like Jonathan Bate, Terry Gifford, Cheryll Glotfelty, and Greg Garrard. Articles and longer studies by Thomas J. Lyon will also be referred to, as will intermedial studies on the connection between image and text by, among others, J. Hillis Miller, Jon Lykke, and W. J. T. Mitchell. Certain historical and anthropological aspects of birdwatcher’s community are taken into account by a reference to the essays of Mark Cocker.

The Male Body fights back: the intermedial relations between body, autobiographical graphic novel and film in American Splendor2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation takes as its staring point two kinds of intermedial genres: the autobiographical graphic novel, with a male protagonist, and films based on comic books. The graphic novel has been studied, in different perspectives, for example in Baetens (2001); film adaptations based on comicshave been scrutinized by (e. g.) Christiansen (2000), Hofstede (1991), and Hughes (2003). This presentation focuses on the American author Harvey Pekar’s autobiographical comics (illustrated, among others, by Robert Crumb) and the film, directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, based on Pekars’s work, American Splendor (2003). The autobiographical comics or graphic novels are often associated with a typically gendered (male) kind of introspection, reflectivity, and self-analysis. In most cases the autobiographical content focuses on the misgivings, the social phobias, and the exaggerated dullness of the life of the protagonist. The lacks in social skills are in most cases manifested by an unusual interest in the limitations of the own, male body, and sometimes by very self-conscious and deliberate antiaesthetics. The lifestyle and physical looks of the protagonist, as it is depicted in image, and told in words, are thus connected to anti-sociality, neuroticism, and to different kinds of physical deformity (illusionary, of course), a slight overweight and illness. An analogy is hereby made between the social and psychological factors and the male dysfunctional body, an analogy that is underlined by the intermedial qualities of the genres. This analogy is even further amplified in the film adaptation by the studied use of mise-en-scène, the use of the actors’ persona, special effects and, in this case, the fact that the autobiographical subject (Harvey Pekar) makes an appearance in the movie “as himself”. Even though the male body is shown as recalcitrant, passive and cancerous, it is simultaneously used as a sign of resistance against the norms and standards of society, a kind of “anti-ecological physical entity”, as I will have it. Indepth studies of the representations of the male body, that my presentation in part is based on, is found in Ervø och Johansson (2003, two volumes).

The nature of nature writing: the politics of environmental education and the necessity of spiritual commitment in the writings of Stefan Edman2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The nature writing of Swedish author/biologist Stefan Edman (1946 –) is shaped by a mainstream political agenda. Simultaneously it gives voice to aesthetic and spiritual reflections on nature’s processes and on environmental change. This paper focuses on how Edman’s texts function, through rhetoric, scientific clarification and ethical positioning, as both an integral part of an established political context, and as a reflective and critical instance, addressing environmental issues. Edman has for several years upheld a position at the center of Swedish politics; apart from being one of the major nature writers of this and the last century, he is the author of governmental investigations, and closely associated to the Social Democratic Party and one of the originators behind ‘the green welfare state’ during Prime Minister Goran Persson’s reign (1996-2006). In this paper analyses are made of Edman’s nature writing and his work is  contextualized with the intent to demonstrate the specific political significance of the texts’ different modes, with particular attention taken to the key concepts ‘limited resources’ and ‘sustainable development’. The theoretical basis of my paper includes Ursula Heise’s ‘Sense of Place and Sense of Planet’ and Satterfield and Slovic (eds.) What’s Nature Worth’, as well as models of discursive analysis.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

How managers, academics and students use performance information under conditions of conflicting institutional logics and ambiguity: A case study of a Swedish university2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A “new public sector” arose during 1980-1990s because of the pressure to utilize public funds more efficiently. The change is commonly known as New Public Management (NPM) and initiated a change towards private sector accounting technology, logics and a series of other management tools. The aim is increased transparency, accountability and performance. The universities are not exempt from the change. The measuring of performance and the use of performance information are ambiguous as universities have an intertwined net of actors with separate interests to accommodate. The actors subscribe to different institutional logics to further complicate the matter. The study explores how managers, academics and students use performance information under conditions of conflicting institutional logics and ambiguity.

The empirics were collected via 12 interviews at Kristianstad University. The respondents included four managers, four academics and four students. The results indicate that performance measurements are used as an indication of performance rather than actual performance. Moreover, the managers subscribe to managerial logic, the academics subscribe to managerial- and academic logic and the students subscribe to service logic. There were only a few signs of ambiguity in the performance measuring and use of performance information. In short, the managers use performance information to evaluate course performance and to allocate resources. The academics use performance information as a means of improving individual and organizational performance. The students use performance information to improve course-quality, prepare for courses and to gauge where they can receive the best educational service possible.

Matematik - ett kommunikationsämne: En intervjustudie om speciallärares syn på samtalets betydelse i matematik2012Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Ethical considerations of refusing nutrition after stroke2008In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 15, no 2, p. 147-59Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to analyse and discuss the ethically problematic conflict raised by patients with stroke who refuse nutritional treatment. In analysing this conflict, the focus is on four different aspects: (1) Is nutritional treatment biologically necessary? (2) If necessary, is the reason for refusal a functional disability, lack of appetite or motivation, misunderstanding of the situation or a genuine conflict of values? (3) If the latter, what values are involved in the conflict? (4) How should we deal with the different kinds of refusal of nutritional treatment? We argue that patients' autonomy should be respected as far as possible, while also considering that those who have suffered a stroke might re-evaluate their life as a result of a beneficial prognosis. However, if patients persist with their refusal, health care professionals should force nutritional treatment only when it is clear that the patients will re-evaluate their future life.

Heteronormativa ideologier: i det motsägelsefulla gränslandet En studie om femininitet(er) och maskulinitet(er)2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study has been to examine women's participation in the reproduction of the system of heteronormative expectations of femininity and masculinity through narrative method, analyze books within the erotic women’s literature, as well as interviews with females. The study's focus was on the presentation and representations of the femininity(s) and masculinity(s). Through the questions

, How represents heteronormative femininity(s) and masculinity(s) in the erotic women´s litterateur? How portray women, their views on femininity(s) and masculinity(s)? The study were linked with the radical feminist theory regarding the male patriarchate's role as a hegemony in society, as well as one of queer theory's definitions of the gender and heteronormativity. The study also included elements of feminist research on popular culture. On the basis of my purpose and the research question I have come to the conclusion that women are involved in the reproduction of the system of heteronormative expectations of femininity and masculinity. But the study also shows a shifting duality of " ideal woman" and "ideal man".

The performance of policy networks: the relation between network structure and network performance2008In: Policy Studies Journal, ISSN 0190-292X, E-ISSN 1541-0072, Vol. 36, no 4, p. 497-524Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The importance of policy networks has long been emphasized within the field of policy analysis. However, few attempts have been made to investigate the explanatory power of policy networks using the tools and theoretical concepts provided by social network analysis (SNA). This paper aims to address this need by determining if a relationship exists between the structural features of policy networks, their organizing capacities, and their performance. A comparative case study of four networks within the higher education policy sector confirms the assumption related to the existence of such a relation. It is proposed that an efficient and innovative policy network consists of a heterogeneous set of actors that are centrally and densely integrated. Furthermore, while the level of network heterogeneity is positively related to the function of resource mobilization in the process of policymaking, the level of centralized integration promotes the function of prioritizing. These findings are believed to contribute to our understanding of policymaking in contemporary society. The current paper indicates that a significant explanatory power exists in the concept of policy networks and that SNA is one way of advancing its possibilities.

Styrelsens ersättningar - en studie i svenska publika företag2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte

    Abstract [sv]

Using service rationalisation to build a research network: lessons from the centralisation of UK services for children with cleft lip and palate.2012In: British Dental Journal, ISSN 0007-0610, E-ISSN 1476-5373, Vol. 212, no 11, p. 553-5Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the UK around a thousand children are born annually with a cleft lip and/or palate that requires treatment. In the last decade services have been centralised in the UK reducing the 57 centres operating on these children in 1998, down to 11 centres or managed clinical networks in 2011. While the rationale for centralisation was to improve the standard of care (and in so doing the outcome) for children born with cleft lip and/or palate, research was central to this process. We illustrate how research informed and shaped this service rationalisation and how it facilitated the emergence of a research culture within the newly configured teams. We also describe how these changes in service provision were linked to the development of a national research strategy and to the identification of the resources necessary to support this strategy.
