Design for co-creation with interactive montage2011In: Proceedings, 4th Nordic Design Research Conference, Nordes2011, School of Art and Design, Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland
May 29th - June 1st, 2011: Making Design Matter / [ed] Jung-Joo Lee, School of Art and Design, Aalto University, 2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Montage in cinema means to mount images andsounds from different sources, that are interpreted together and whose oppositions drive the storyfurther. In this paper we develop the montage concept further for co-creation in interactive, tactile, spatial cross-media. As case we use the design of the interactive, tangible, cross-media installation ORFI. ORFI is developed to facilitate collaboration and co-creation between children with severe disabilities and their care persons. In this paper we focus on how we have designed for interactive montage. We present two main types of interactive montage, close and shifted in three dimensions (spatial, temporal and actorial). With the first we mean spatial and temporal closeness, depending on the roles users take and the interpretations they make. With shifted we mean how to use spatial and temporal shifting and distance between the media elements in space and over time, depending on the users’ roles and interpretations. All this to encourage co-creation over time, between a variety of users in different situations.

From designing objects to designing fields: from control to freedom2003In: Digital Creativity, ISSN 1462-6268, E-ISSN 1744-3806, Vol. 14, no 2, p. 74-90Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we want to explore Field as a concept and as a metaphor for understanding interactive systems. By interactive systems we mean both systems and artworks, where the user by interacting changes the course of events. We intend to show why we need new terms and why we consider Field to be a fruitful concept and term. Further we will show how the Field concept changes both our understanding of what we do as designers and composers and how we acknowledge our audience. We will exemplify the design consequences of the Field concept by going through some design considerations we made when designing the audio tactile installation Mufi.

The oldest old: patterns of adjustment and dependence1991In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 93-100Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study was to investigate how dependence was experienced by 129 non-institutionalized 85-year-old persons, who previously had been categorized into seven different patterns of adjustment. The participants' subjective experiences of dependence were expressed in in-depth interviews and additionally, mobility, self-maintenance and need of help in daily living was conventionally assessed. When the results from these two methods were compared, it was found that subjectively experienced dependence did not generally correspond with the scorings on dependence. The in-depth interviews revealed that subjects with poorer adjustment could be most affected by minor impairments, while physical impairments were of a subordinate importance to those who were better adjusted. For appropriate caring interventions, it is therefore suggested that conventionally assessed dependence needs to be supplemented with documented subjective experiences of dependence.

    Abstract [en]

A qualitative method was used to study the life experiences and the adjustment to very old age of a non-institutionalized population of 129 85-year-olds living in Gothenburg, Sweden. In-depth interviews were analyzed and categorized and seven patterns of adjustment emerged: Self-Realizing, Mature Aging, Adapting, Dependent, Resignedly Accepting, Despairing and Withdrawing. Additionally, a coping strategy—ritualization of time and occupations—was revealed in the interviews. These results reflect the heterogeneity among this age group and indicate that the subjective reality should be seriously considered both in further research and in the care of the elderly.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The image of teachers' work situation as presented in the media is usually negatively biased. For example, a survey shows that only a third of the teachers perceive their psychosocial work environment as well. About half of the perceived problems with the work environment can be traced to the administrative workload. Despite this experience the majority of teachers in primary schools finds their work meaningful and feel support from their colleagues. There are thus two parallel and sometimes contradictory images of how teachers perceive their work situation .

The purpose of this study was that from a salutogenic perspective examine the healthy and risk factors teachers on an F-6 school experienced in their workplace and how these factors can affect teachers' perception of health in their work. This may be the basis for continued health promotion efforts at teacher workstations. The method used in the data collection was qualitative individual interviews with six teachers. The results showed a split image of teachers' perceptions of their work environment. The health factors that were strongest and that the teachers were most consistent about was teaching and the meaningfulness around the work with the pupils, the duties and the support they experienced from work colleagues and managers. The majority of teachers felt that they perceived imbalance between the work with the pupils and other work. The teachers felt that documentation and other tasks took up more space in their working time than what they wanted and many of them expressed a desire to have more time for planning lessons. The conclusion is that teachers feel good and like teaching and want more time for this.

Om trygghet och övervakningssystem: Enkätstudie om medborgares attityder till kamera- och IT-baserad övervakning2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Family intervention sessions: one useful way to improve schoolchildren's mental health2008In: Journal of Family Nursing, ISSN 1074-8407, E-ISSN 1552-549X, Vol. 14, no 3, p. 289-313Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the effectiveness of therapeutic conversations with families (through family sessions) in alleviating health complaints among adolescent girls in a school setting. Four girls with recurrent, subjective health complaints and their families were included in the study. Three sessions were held with each family, using genograms, ecomaps, interventive questions, and other family nursing interventions; practicing school nurses were also present. A therapeutic letter was sent to each family at the end of the sessions. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was used as a pre- and posttest measure. Evaluative interviews were carried out with the families and with school nurses. The families reported feeling relief and described positive affective, behavioral, and cognitive changes as a consequence of the interventions. The school nurses experienced the family sessions as time-saving and easy-to-use tools in their work. Involving the family when schoolchildren's recurrent mental health problems are addressed may reduce future suffering.

Ethical challenges for school nurses in documenting schoolchildren's health2008In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 40-51Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explored Swedish school nurses' experiences of school health record documentation. Fifty per cent of a representative sample of Swedish school nurses (n = 129) reported difficulties with documenting mental and social health problems in family relationships, schoolchildren's behaviour, and school situations. Ethical considerations concerning fears of misinterpretation and practical barriers to documentation were expressed as reasons for their worries. Mental and social ill health is an increasing and often dominating problem among schoolchildren, thus proper documentation is a basic issue, both for individuals and for the population as a whole. School nurses obviously need professional guidance regarding documentation and ethical challenges. Systematic effort should be directed towards recognition and support of these nurses' unique opportunities to consider, follow and promote all aspects of schoolchildren's health.

Schoolchildren's health as judged by Swedish school nurses: a national survey2008In: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1403-4948, E-ISSN 1651-1905, Vol. 36, no 7, p. 690-697Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS: To use school nurses' knowledge and experience for a better understanding of schoolchildren's health problems and their association to socioeconomic background and gender. METHODS: Mail questionnaires were sent to a nationally representative, random sample of Swedish school nurses (n=129). The questionnaire included structured and open-ended questions asking for school nurses' judgement of schoolchildren's health status; changes over the previous two years; estimation of schoolchildren's most common reasons for consulting the school nurse; and estimation of factors influencing schoolchildren's health. RESULTS: Swedish school nurses judged schoolchildren's mental health to have deteriorated during the previous two years with increasing health complaints, especially among girls and in disadvantaged housing areas. Disturbed family relations were considered as one important explanatory factor. Girls were more inclined to consult school nurses with subjective health complaints. Boys more often consulted the nurses with physical injuries. CONCLUSIONS: School nurses work closely with the children and meet them continuously during the school age period. They have a genuine knowledge of schoolchildren's health, which should be used even more, both in research and practice. The results may be applicable in other countries with similarly organized school health systems.

School nurses' view of schoochildren's health and their attitudes to document it in the school health record: a pilot study2003In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 17, no 4, p. 392-398Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study highlights school nurses' view of schoolchildren's health and their attitude to document it in the school health records. A strategic sample of 12 school nurses was interviewed. The interviews were semistructured and analysed with qualitative content analysis. The findings showed that the school nurses' viewed schoolchildren as physical healthy although they called attention to growing problems related to a changed lifestyle. Psychosocial ill-health was however increasing and the most common reason for visiting the school nurse was psychosomatic expressions. According to the nurses' descriptions, health was related to the individual, the school and the family situation. The family situation was mentioned as one of the most important factors of schoolchildren's health. The nurses described no problem to document schoolchildren's physical health. Ethical consideration, tradition, lack of time and the structure of the record were however factors that were said to hinder the documentation of the psychosocial health. In order to promote, protect and recover schoolchildren's health, more research is needed about how beliefs, experience, ethical consideration and resources influence the school nurse's daily work with schoolchildren's health.

Svenska baljväxter från förr: en sensorisk beskrivning2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Legumes have many favourable health and environmental benefits and are predicted to be the diet of the future. Sweden sits on a cultural treasure when it comes to legumes from the past that have been collected by The programme of cultivated diversity, POM. A sensory description would be a valuable tool to reach the consumer and a way to increase the consumption and value of the product.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to identify and bring forward sensory descriptive words for six Swedish legumes from the past. This thesis will also describe the Swedish legumes using the sensory descriptive words to evaluate whether there are sensory differences.

Method: Six different types of legumes were used in the two surveys. The first survey consisted of a qualitative group discussion and the goal was to bring forward sensory descriptive words for the legumes. The second survey consisted of a quantitative intensity evaluation of the legumes. Both surveys were made by a panel of experts, chosen for their knowledge of legumes.

Result: The sensory words which best describes the legumes are sweet, sour/acidic, bitter, chestnut, nutty, buttery, fresh, rich taste and with variations in aftertaste. The mouthfeel can be described as mealy, crisp, solid and tender. The evaluation of intensity proved the legumes to have few taste varieties, but despite the sensory descriptions each of the six legumes were possible to distinguish.

Conclusion: The sensory descriptive words that this thesis have lead to can help the consumer to chose the right product, increase the value of the product an at the same time preserve a cultural treasure of Sweden. It is also possible for the consumer to create a cultural identity with all the good benefits that the legumes possess.

Problematizing parents: representations of multi-ethnic areas, youth and urban unrest2017In: Reimagineering the nation: essays on twenty-first-century Sweden / [ed] Aleksandra Ålund, Carl-Ulrik Schierup, Anders Neergaard, Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang Publishing Group, 2017, p. 209-233Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The causes of and solutions to juvenile delinquency and social unrest amongthe youth in so-called Swedish multi-ethnic urban areas are frequently represented inpublic-institutional discourse as related to migrant parents. These are, the authors argue, consequently exposed to policies for ‘activation’, ‘responsibilisation’ and ‘normalisation’.

Governing suburban youth: discourses on suburbs, parents and other subjects in multi-ethnic Sweden2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The paper focuses on current debates on youth in deprived suburbs in Sweden. In the article, interviews withrepresentatives of different organisations involved in managing the situation of suburban youth are analysed. One recurring theme in the interviews is problem discourses representing the parent as a problem. Departing from Foucault´s understanding of governmentality, we analyse the construction of problems, problematization, and solutions, as depicted by the interviewees. The main problematizations are the deficiency of urban space, dysfunctional family relations and parents as passive and culturally different. On the basis of such problematizations the interviewees propose solutions in various ways fostering the parents to become responsible and active subjects, who have internalised current norms and values. In the article, these problematizations are set in genealogical perspective, through relating them to other historical discourses: namely the Philanthropic discourse of poor relief and the policing of families during the late 19th  century and the discourse of problematic suburban youth in the 1980s. These different historical situations illustrate both similarities and differences in the problematizations of the early 2000s. With adopting this genealogical approach we do not claim  that history repeats itself unchanged, but rather we wish to investigate how historical discourses are re-‐activated and acquire new meanings in new historical epochs. An important conclusion in the article is that the way of developing solutions to the problems of suburban youth in the early 2000s tends to focus on the transformation of individual parents, while structural dimensions get out of focus. What appears is a desire to foster parents and thus to produce a certain kind of subject, namely an active, responsible and cooperative individual, involved in the local community. Such a desire isboth similar and different from the desire found in the late 19th Century and in the 1980s.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine consumers and producers view on beverages and it’s meaning for Skåne (a region in southern Sweden) and how to create a strong culinary region using beverages. It gets more common to connect food and tourism, where food and beverages can be used to attract visitors. The research methods used were qualitative and quantitative and the data was collected by survey and semi-structured interviews. The respondents weren’t aware of current beverage projects in the region. Most of the respondents expressed that products from Skåne brings added value, the informants shared the same view. The informants also expressed the importance of collaboration and solidarity, the problems of communication and visibility by the customers and finally the importance to experience the beverages as more than just a ‘drink’. There are many advantages by marketing beverages and region together, and it can be positive for both parts.

    Abstract [sv]

Facebook- ett brottspreventivt verktyg?: Polisens brottspreventiva arbete på Facebook2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Internet use increases and so does the notifications that the of crime have been "online". The purpose of this paper is to examine how the police crime prevention looks on Facebook. The essay shows through a mailing of questionnaires on what police have to practice when it comes to Facebook. Previous research suggests that crime has become increasingly "online". Results collected suggest that it is difficult to prevent crime via Facebook today. Respondents considered primarily to prevent crimes meant to publish general information, which they also considered to be the most effective way. The police shows that they are available to the public, which leads to a higher sense of security and a better trust from the society. Through Facebook you can create a kind of communication between the police and the public. Partly, to ensure that no crime is committed but also to create a better contact with the public.

Löneanspråk: Ett språk som skiljer kvinnor från män2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: There’re not many areas that affect so many people that provisions and provisional consumption does. We all consume different provisions in one way or another, even if it is with very different perspectives. Neither is what you consume calculable, but is changing at the different situations life brings. Consumption meets the different needs of different individuals and is very affecting in one's choice. The road from the farmer to the consumer is getting longer which means that consumers want more information about the final products to be able to evaluate the product within their own frames of references.

Background: Provisions that are produced and sold in the store should be obvious to consumer as safe to consume. But because of previous provisions scandals in Europe where traceability has been scarce, and with increased consumer awareness the safety also comes into question. It is assumed that the provisions produced are safe to ingest.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe how food companies look at internal and external traceability. The EC regulation aimed at food companies have to rely on external traceability by always checking one step forward and one step back in the grocery chain. The regulation does not, however, require internal traceability.

Method: With a phenomenographically approach four qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted in personal and via phone to get the detailed information about the current traceability as a phenomenon.

Results: The results indicated that the food companies' view on traceability and internal traceability was similar but the approach was different depending on what part of the grocery chain they belong to and the operational layout of each individual company. The regulation was nothing strange for the companies since it was natural wanting to produce safe provisions. However, there were outsiders claim to stay constantly updated, customer and consumer demands, media and other climatic conditions that were much more extensive than the regulation the companies worked towards in order to not lose important customers and consumers.

Discussion: The external demands towards the regulation produced results showing that the companies are doing more than what is required by the regulation. Some parts of the grocery chain, in this case retail put greater demands on their suppliers that also affected other companies, such as delivering comprehensive solutions and services to these suppliers to retail.

Conclusion: In a constantly changeable phenomenon such as traceability companies are keeping themselves up-to-date and constantly working towards satisfying its customers and consumers, enabling them to act more than regulation ordains. The procedure for complaints, flow of returns and withdrawals showed participants were more than eager keep the trust of its customers and consumers.

    Abstract [sv]

The role of first line managers in healthcare organisations: a qualitative study on the work life experience of ward managers2015In: Journal of Research in Nursing, ISSN 1744-9871, E-ISSN 1744-988X, Vol. 20, no 4, p. 280-295, article id 1744987114564258Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The role of a first line manager (FLM) in Swedish healthcare has gone through major changes, from a divided role involving both nursing work and supervision to a pure management role. Along with these changes, the experienced core work and meaning of work have been altered. This also means that conditions for work that could regenerate the invested resources of the FLMs have been altered as well. The aim of this study was to describe the ward managers’ experiences of their professional role, their work and how they are handling their everyday practice. Furthermore, the aim has been to interpret these experiences through the lens of regenerative work. Five ward managers at a Swedish hospital setting were followed for approximately four years. The study has had an interactive and pragmatic approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations and a continuous dialogue forum (three years). Four themes are presented in this paper: from supervisor to manager; loyalty; talking about it and dialogue forum. These themes are then discussed in order to understand basic conditions for the regenerative work of the FLM. The most central finding is the importance for the FLMs to make sense of their world through narratives and that the organisation does not provide for this.

    Abstract [en]

Based on one-to-one interviews and focus group interviews with management representatives, trade union representatives, and blue- and white-collar workers this article investigates how the global financial crisis was handled in Swedish industry. In the light of the crisis agreement signed between trade union IF Metall and company representatives how can the implementation of the agreement be described? How were these new conditions interpreted and how were they experienced? Three conceptual themes emerged, trust, loyalty, and principle of fair-play. Large differences were shown that were related to attitudes towards blue- and white-collar workers, recognition of work, and the size of the town.

Housing support workers as equilibrists between instrumentality and situation: a qualitative study in congregated housings for people with smi2014In: Vulnerable Groups & Inclusion, ISSN 2000-8023, E-ISSN 2000-8023, Vol. 5, article id 23755Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Community-based psychiatry as an arena for studying work efforts is relatively unexplored. The professional role of a housing support worker (HSW) in congregated supported housings for people with severe mental illness (SMI) is fairly new. The role has emerged due to major changes in Swedish mental care and services. Our aim was to describe the work experiences of HSWs and to understand the conditions provided when work assignments are being constructed. By doing this we provide an important piece of the puzzle in understanding the processes in contemporary congregated supported housings for people with SMI. Four focus group interviews were conducted and included 25 participants. Four different facilities of congregated supported housings for people with SMI were represented in the material. The interpretation of the material was inspired by a constructionist approach. The work of an HSW is experienced as complex and ambiguous. Together with different significant actors (including objects), the HSWs are negotiating the content of the responsibilities. Thus, different actors help co-construct the work content. Furthermore, the HSWs are caught between two different logics, one that is related to a complex practice and one that is related to instrumental and routine-based ideas. The complex emotional work of an HSW is often not supported by the principles of the organization. The findings can be helpful when organizing the work in congregated supported housings for people with SMI. This paper highlights the importance of bridging the gap between organizational demands and expectations and the individual preconditions and basic needs.

Med minnen av en framtid - integration och etablering som meningsskapande processer2017In: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv, ISSN 1400-9692, Vol. 23, no 1, p. 8-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Managing for results in social services: Key professionals lived experience2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study illuminates eight key professionals' lived experience of managing for results in social services. Managing for results, in human service organizations, as social services are complex and research is still limited. The lived experience of using managing for results is still missing. Thus to illuminate the key professional´s experiences, individual interviews were performed. A phenomenological- hermeneutical method inspired by Paul Ricoeur was used to interpret the texts. A naive reading was performed first and then a structural analysis, which revealed three themes: 1) having mixed feelings as professional regarding performance measurement in social work, theme 2) feeling questioned regarding professional competence and theme 3) feelings of being in an organization far from the core of social work. The comprehensive understanding was interpreted as meaning that managing for results in social services mimic the experience of putting a jigsaw puzzle together where each piece has its own special place. Findings reveal that the puzzle still lacks pieces andthat it is first when the puzzle is solved that the wholeness can be understood.

Social rekrytering: en kvalitativ studie som behandlar fyra organisationers och fyra professionella aktörers tankar om rekrytering oc sociala medier.2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Perception of elder abuse in Sweden: voices of older persons2005In: Brief Treatment and Crisis Intervention, ISSN 1474-3310, E-ISSN 1474-3329, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 213-227Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of elder abuse held by older persons in Sweden. Six focus group interviews were conducted. Through qualitative content analysis, the text revealed four themes: causes of elder abuse, conceptions of elder abuse, consequences of elder abuse, and coping with elder abuse. Changing society and families, as well as individual determinants, were believed to be causes of elder abuse. The main conception of elder abuse was that of robbery or assault, and the main consequence was fear. Coping with abuse included individual strategies and improvements in society. Issues of age discrimination were intrinsic in the findings. Gender differences were evident in the group dynamics. Nurses and other health care personnel need to be aware of what older persons believe to be the cause of elder abuse and what they consider abusive. Awareness of the results of this study can help in refining interview and assessment techniques and in designing training manuals.

Ett kvinnligt perspektiv på work-life balance: samhälleliga förutsättningar, jämställdhet och strategier2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Santa Maria is part of the Finnish food Company, Paulig. Santa Maria is the largest actor in the Nordic region of Mexican food (Tex-Mex)and sees its future expansion there Santa Maria has four production sites in Sweden, in Mölndal the spice and taco chips/shell factories and in the south Vadensjö and Landskrona produce Tortillas. Manufacturing Tortillas without preservatives is a challenge which requires advanced ventilation technique and expensive, complicated machinery. For the analysis was chosen a 10” Wheat Tortilla, Santa Marias second largest best seller, and one machine it’s made on.

Manual work on a Tortilla line can be separated into two categories, preventative and corrective. In the preventive errors and faults are corrected before they happen or lead to major stops. The corrective work is bound to alarms, stops or raw material running out and need refilling. By moving one line and merging two sites the management would like the Baker to get more time available for supervision of the line rather than added corrective tasks, the management also wishes to reduce costs tied up in inventory by reducing the amount of time raw material and finished goods stay in stock.

In the report the days in stock (DIS), value stream mapping (VSM) and Spaghetti diagrams are shown during the move and merger. One part of the report is sectioned according to DMAIC.

All analysis was made in parallel to the project without being part of it and the results reflect on this fact. The result was communicated to the management when the merger/move was completed. The value of the work and analysis was to teach parts of the organization the skill of value stream mapping (VSM), Spaghetti diagram and the advantage of working with the DMAIC methodology and show suggestions of improvement.

The report describes that the Trågare(baker) has in fact been given fewer possibilities to supervise and increased corrective work. The production line and the design of the workplace has caused double the movement tasks. Days in stock (DIS) for the product under review have deteriorated slightly after relocation and the value stream mapping (VSM) of the production flow through the production line was unaltered.

Two improvement and one appeal was drafted.

A small program change will reduce visits to the raw material room by 50%. By using a currently empty silo for one manual ingredient several tasks can be eliminated.

Appeal to use VSM and Spaghetti diagrams in future root cause analysis of DIS and project work when trying to find improvements.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The main aim was to develop recipes and prepare sustainable and vegetarian lunch alternatives based on a mixed diet menu. Ten vegetarian dishes were developed with creative design and the main focus was that the meals should be tasty and nutritious according the Nordic recommendations (2012). The nutritional value was estimated through the program dietist Net and an appreciation test and a group discussion was performed with 19 high school students. The resulting feedback was used to improve the taste and appreciation of the dishes among the adolescents. It was concluded that by planning the menu after dishes and vegetables that adolescents already enjoy, there would be no reason why they would not enjoy the dishes. There were also no difficulties in developing vegetarian recipes, but it was difficult to meet the Nordic recommendations (2012) regarding vitamin D, zinc and iron, and it was difficult to avoid high levels of salt in the dishes. To generate cost-estimates there were no noticeable differences, generally vegetables are cheaper than meat.   Oatlys enriched oat drink and iMat was important to ensure adequate amounts of B12 and vitamin D in the meals, however they were also the most costly ingredients in the vegetarian dishes. Economically, it can be easily adjusted depending on the goals the school set out with the vegetarian diet. By combining the vegetable meals with mixed diet meals or using dairy products in the recipes instead, it is possible to bring down the prices of the meals.

Impact of chronic heart failure on elderly persons' daily life: a validation study2006In: European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, ISSN 1474-5151, E-ISSN 1873-1953, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 137-145Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about how elderly persons perceive the impact of chronic heart failure (CHF) on daily life is important when planning nursing care. For this purpose, disease specific instruments are needed. However, few instruments have been developed or tested specifically on elderly persons. AIM: To validate a Swedish version of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (LHFQ) on elderly persons with CHF, and use it to describe the impact of CHF on daily life in the same population. METHODS: The sample comprised of 357 persons, aged between 65 and 99, diagnosed with CHF. A questionnaire including background data, the LHFQ and the SF-12 was used. RESULTS: A factor analysis resulted in four dimensions: physical, emotional, treatment and pleasure. LHFQ showed convergent validity and ability to discriminate between known groups. Cronbach's alpha for the total scale was 0.94. Impairments in the physical dimension were most common, especially fatigue (88%) and shortness of breath (87%). CONCLUSIONS: The LHFQ showed satisfying psychometric properties in an elderly Swedish population with CHF and can, with minor alterations, be recommended for research and clinical use. The impact of chronic heart failure on daily life was mostly physical, but other impairments were also common.

Predictors for health related quality of life in persons 65 years or older with chronic heart failure2007In: European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, ISSN 1474-5151, E-ISSN 1873-1953, Vol. 6, no 2, p. 112-120Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

A main goal in nursing care of persons with chronic heart failure (HF) is to strengthen their health related quality of life (HRQoL). This presupposes knowledge about the relation between heart failure and HRQoL. Existing studies have shown incongruent results about whether HRQoL is affected differently depending on age or sex of elderly persons with chronic HF.

    Aim

This study aimed to investigate if age, sex, disease severity, comorbidity and living conditions predict health related quality of life among persons 65 years or older with chronic HF.

    Methods

The study included a sample of 357 persons. HRQoL was measured by the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire and the Short Form-12 Health Survey Questionnaire. Multiple regression analyses were performed to analyse the relation between the predictors and HRQoL.

    Results

The main finding was that self-rated disease severity was strongly associated with HRQoL, but also age, sex, diabetes and respiratory diseases was associated with some of the dimensions of HRQoL.

    Conclusions

Interventions aimed at delaying the progress of the disease, assist persons' to cope with the disease and maintain the domains of HRQoL that are still feasible could be important to improve HRQoL in elderly persons with chronic HF.

    Abstract [en]

Every day, about three million meals are served in the public sector, where Sweden is one of three countries offering a free meal in preschool, school and elderly care. The law states that the meal should be nutritious and it is the meal developer who, together with meal and diet manager, is working with the experience of the meal. As a tool for developing the meals, the FAMM model and the Food Agency's meal model are recommended to use. Over the years, the professional role as meal developer has emerged in the municipality and contributed with work related to the development of public meals. The profession as a meal developer in the municipality is relatively new and can be seen as quite unspecified regarding education, qualifications and tasks. For that reason, it was interesting to investigate the profession more closely.

The aim of this study is to examine the profession as a meal-developer with regard to the content and qualifications of the profession, as well as perceptions and expectations of the professional role of meal developers and diet / meal managers in Scanian municipalities. The aim is followed by four questions about the meal developer, linked to tasks, education, competence and challenges as well as their view on the public meal.

This study is based on four semi-structured interviews with meal developers and a questionnaire answered by diet / meal managers in Region Scanian.

The result of the study showed that the profession as a meal developer was multifaceted with regard to content, qualifications and education, but also tasks and expectations related to the profession. The profession was perceived as relatively self-directed, with different areas of responsibility, depending on the municipality, working methods and what management the meal developer belonged to.

There are perceptions and expectations that the meal developer should have a broad knowledge of the meal area. There were both pros and cons noticed of working in a politically controlled organization. The meal developers work with the meal from a broad perspective and believe that the meal is important for the society in terms of sustainability and health.

Faktorer som påverkar jämställdheten inom sjuksköterskans profession: rulltrappan eller glastaket2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The organization has a significant role in an employee’s work-life balance. There is much to gain for the employer by addressing problems and finding solutions that fit the employee. Studies of health promotion interventions at the workplace show that the best results are achieved if the intervention focuses simultaneously on both the individual and the organization. The aim of the study was to describe municipal employed managerial perceptions of an intervention study, that managers employees participated in, affected the workplace. The study also aimed to seek understanding of managers further thoughts on health promotion at an organizational level from a perspective where everyday life was included. The method used for data gathering was six individual interviews with managers in the social department in a municipality. The results of the study showed that managers were in favor of the intervention study, but the managers did not notice any change at the workplace or on participating employees. They thought that the manager was responsible for health at the workplace and that individuals were responsible for their own health. The conclusion from our study showed that managers attitude towards work-related health affects to which extent the organization can assimilate knowledge from a health intervention. The managers opinion of which factors are included in work-related health can be broadened through education and create better conditions for a healthier work environment. The literature review suggests that a shared ethos of the organization and the pursuit of work-life balance for employees is an important step in health promotion at the workplace. A positive effect of work-life balance interventions are more sustainable staff who stay longer, which makes the organization become more competitive and attractive to new staff.

En studie om frivårdens insatser.: Före detta kriminella och handläggares upplevelser av dess stödinsatser.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Taboo Language in Sex and the City: An Analysis of Gender Differences in Using Taboo Language in Conversation2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Taboo language is a broad definition, and researchers have defined it in various categories. Using taboo language, to a great extent, is widely considered as offensive and inappropriate, as well as a specialty of men rather than women. Men and women are often said to use taboo language differently. This study aims to analyze the use of taboo language in conversations of women’s, men’s and mixed-gender talk in some episodes from the American TV series Sex and the City. The study will examine the differences and similarities of using taboo language in male and female speech in terms of gender differences, and conversational strategies in general.

Sömn, medievanor och livsstil  hos barn och ungdomar2019In: Barnsliga sammanhang: forskning om barns och ungdomars uppväxt och livsvillkor / [ed] Eva K. Clausson & Bo Nilsson, Kristianstad: Kristianstad University Press , 2019, p. 103-113Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Måltidskvalitet i förskolan: bidrag till ett kvalitetsbedömningssystem2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The quality of meals is included in the constant improvement of each preschool. The study is carried out on behalf of the City of Malmö and Environmental Management and focuses on this quality work. By compiling a checklist of meal quality and by identifying what the meal quality means for persons working with the meal (managers, cooks, educators and parents), it is our wish that this will be a help in their quality work.

To inspire the composition various organizations working methods and ways to manage, evaluate and make use of different models and tools to improve the dining quality, has been studied.

In the literature, the work has received confirmation of theories that emerged during the analysis work of what a meal is and how quality can be measured. The results show that food quality is described as a complex concept consisting of different parts, where the food, atmosphere, service, together form the meal quality. The semi-structured interviews and the inquiry form, have given an indication of the preschool work with quality in the meal activities and it shows that on a wide range and large differences. When various occupational groups were asked, what ”meal quality” means, the responses are consistent to the food, that it was good, appetizing, organic or where locally produced.

It turned out that the cooperation between managers and other employees worked but that there were no directives "from above" which regulate the work concerning meals.

Teamwork between the kitchen and preschool teachers, which is so important in quality work, was very insignificant and they were looking for ways to solve this.

The criteria for the Check list that includes headings as, "Food and quality of raw materials", "Dining" situation", “Work environment and collaboration" and "Education and development" are based on the results we received from interviews, literature studies and field trips.
