    Abstract [sv]

Ethical considerations of refusing nutrition after stroke2008In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 15, no 2, p. 147-59Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to analyse and discuss the ethically problematic conflict raised by patients with stroke who refuse nutritional treatment. In analysing this conflict, the focus is on four different aspects: (1) Is nutritional treatment biologically necessary? (2) If necessary, is the reason for refusal a functional disability, lack of appetite or motivation, misunderstanding of the situation or a genuine conflict of values? (3) If the latter, what values are involved in the conflict? (4) How should we deal with the different kinds of refusal of nutritional treatment? We argue that patients' autonomy should be respected as far as possible, while also considering that those who have suffered a stroke might re-evaluate their life as a result of a beneficial prognosis. However, if patients persist with their refusal, health care professionals should force nutritional treatment only when it is clear that the patients will re-evaluate their future life.

Heteronormativa ideologier: i det motsägelsefulla gränslandet En studie om femininitet(er) och maskulinitet(er)2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study has been to examine women's participation in the reproduction of the system of heteronormative expectations of femininity and masculinity through narrative method, analyze books within the erotic women’s literature, as well as interviews with females. The study's focus was on the presentation and representations of the femininity(s) and masculinity(s). Through the questions

, How represents heteronormative femininity(s) and masculinity(s) in the erotic women´s litterateur? How portray women, their views on femininity(s) and masculinity(s)? The study were linked with the radical feminist theory regarding the male patriarchate's role as a hegemony in society, as well as one of queer theory's definitions of the gender and heteronormativity. The study also included elements of feminist research on popular culture. On the basis of my purpose and the research question I have come to the conclusion that women are involved in the reproduction of the system of heteronormative expectations of femininity and masculinity. But the study also shows a shifting duality of " ideal woman" and "ideal man".

The performance of policy networks: the relation between network structure and network performance2008In: Policy Studies Journal, ISSN 0190-292X, E-ISSN 1541-0072, Vol. 36, no 4, p. 497-524Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The importance of policy networks has long been emphasized within the field of policy analysis. However, few attempts have been made to investigate the explanatory power of policy networks using the tools and theoretical concepts provided by social network analysis (SNA). This paper aims to address this need by determining if a relationship exists between the structural features of policy networks, their organizing capacities, and their performance. A comparative case study of four networks within the higher education policy sector confirms the assumption related to the existence of such a relation. It is proposed that an efficient and innovative policy network consists of a heterogeneous set of actors that are centrally and densely integrated. Furthermore, while the level of network heterogeneity is positively related to the function of resource mobilization in the process of policymaking, the level of centralized integration promotes the function of prioritizing. These findings are believed to contribute to our understanding of policymaking in contemporary society. The current paper indicates that a significant explanatory power exists in the concept of policy networks and that SNA is one way of advancing its possibilities.

Styrelsens ersättningar - en studie i svenska publika företag2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte

    Abstract [sv]

Using service rationalisation to build a research network: lessons from the centralisation of UK services for children with cleft lip and palate.2012In: British Dental Journal, ISSN 0007-0610, E-ISSN 1476-5373, Vol. 212, no 11, p. 553-5Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the UK around a thousand children are born annually with a cleft lip and/or palate that requires treatment. In the last decade services have been centralised in the UK reducing the 57 centres operating on these children in 1998, down to 11 centres or managed clinical networks in 2011. While the rationale for centralisation was to improve the standard of care (and in so doing the outcome) for children born with cleft lip and/or palate, research was central to this process. We illustrate how research informed and shaped this service rationalisation and how it facilitated the emergence of a research culture within the newly configured teams. We also describe how these changes in service provision were linked to the development of a national research strategy and to the identification of the resources necessary to support this strategy.

Internationalisation in Theory and Reality - a Study of Five Companies2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A great deal of research has been made within the field of companies’ internationalisation processes by many famous researchers in the last four centuries. This dissertation will mainly focus on three modern theories of internationalisation; transaction cost theory, the network approach and the Uppsala Internationalisation model. The purpose of the dissertation is to examine whether these models are applicable to the process of internationalisation. Further, our purpose is to investigate if there are other factors influencing a company’s internationalisation decision process. In order to answer the research questions we developed eight hypotheses and conducted a study on five international manufacturing companies in Skåne; Alfa Laval, Backer AB, Furninova, Kron International and Perstorp AB.

The need for control of transactions was more of an obstacle in small companies’ internationalisation process than in large companies. The main reasons to engage in networks were to reduce costs and to gain market shares. Further influencing factors for networking were R&D and protection of environment. The companies in our study followed the Uppsala internationalisation model to some extent. Large companies had a higher propensity than small companies to deviate from the traditional establishment pattern of the Uppsala internationalisation model. Other influencing factors in the internationalisation process were coincidence and political changes. The conclusion to be drawn from our study was that the chosen internationalisation theories were applicable to some extent for the studied companies and that a couple of new factors outside the studied theories were to be found.

Samtidskonstens möjligheter: Att arbeta med samtidskonst i bildundervisning2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstrakt

Uppsatsen belyser samtidskonstens förekommande i bildundervisningen.

Health system capacity: maternal health policy implementation in the state of Gujarat, India2013In: Global Health Action, ISSN 1654-9716, E-ISSN 1654-9880, Vol. 6, p. 19629-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: The Government of Gujarat has for the past couple of decades continuously initiated several interventions to improve access to care for pregnant and delivering women within the state. Data from the last District Family Heath survey in Gujarat in 2007-2008 show that 56.4% of women had institutional deliveries and 71.5% had at least one antenatal check-up, indicating that challenges remain in increasing use of and access to maternal health care services.

Objective: To explore the perceptions of high-level stakeholders on the process of implementing maternal health interventions in Gujarat. Method: Using the policy triangle framework developed by Walt and Gilson, the process of implementation was approached using in-depth interviews and qualitative content analysis.

Result: Based on the analysis, three themes were developed: lack of continuity; the complexity of coordination; and lack of confidence and underutilization of the monitoring system. The findings suggest that decisions made and actions advocated and taken are more dependent on individual actors than on sustainable structures. The findings also indicate that the context in which interventions are implemented is challenged in terms of weak coordination and monitoring systems that are not used to evaluate and develop interventions on maternal health.

Conclusions: The implementation of interventions on maternal health is dependent on the capacity of the health system to implement evidence-based policies. The capacity of the health system in Gujarat to facilitate implementation of maternal health interventions needs to be improved, both in terms of the role of actors and in terms of structures and processes.

Acute effects of alcohol on regional cerebral blood flow in man1993In: Journal of Studies on Alcohol, ISSN 0096-882X, E-ISSN 1934-2683, Vol. 54, no 3, p. 369-376Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Acute effects of alcohol in a low (0.7 g/kg) and a high dose (1.5 g/kg) on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were measured with 133Xe inhalation technique at resting conditions in 13 normals. Mean hemisphere CBF increased globally by 12% at the lower dose and 16% at the higher dose. A normal hyperfrontal flow pattern was seen in both alcohol conditions. There were, however, significant regional differences in response to alcohol. The largest rCBF increase was observed in prefrontal regions at the lower dose, and in temporal regions at the higher. Expressed in relative values (% of the whole brain CBF), the temporal rCBF increased linearly with increasing alcohol dosage, while the prefrontal rCBF showed a increase at the lower dose followed by a decrease at the higher dose. It is concluded that alcohol has two types of acute effects on rCBF, a global vasodilatory effect and some regional effects, most clearly seen in prefrontal and temporal regions. The prefrontal flow augmentation following acute alcohol intake may be related to a transient arousal reaction, which has been reported by others. The temporal flow increase may be related to effects of alcohol on emotions and mood.

Ett elevperspektiv på sex- och samlevnadsundervisning i grundskolan: En retrospektiv enkätstudie bland gymnasielever2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Public health is a concern of many important areas of society and it is therefore of great importance to examine and expand the goals of public health work within different sectors, e.g., school. Sexually transmitted diseases, sexual violence and mental health problems related to sexual orientation are some of the public health problems in society today. Throughout childhood and teenage years, norms and attitudes regarding sexuality and coexistence are formed, which means that school is an important arena when it comes to creating proficient conditions for    coexistence and sexual health. The quality of sex and coexistence education in Swedish schools differs in quality; for content and magnitude vary greatly among schools. It is, therefore, of interest to study how students experience sex and coexistence education, like prioritizations and desires. The purpose of this study is to describe how high school students experience sex and coexistence education in primary school, and which parts the students consider significant affecting coexistence and sexual health. A quantitative survey (n=113) was conducted at a high school in northeast Skåne. The survey consisted of ten standardized questions regarding experiences and magnitude of sex-and coexistence education in primary school. The results showed that 58,3 percent of the students were dissatisfied with the teaching, and the students prioritized aspects of sexuality and coexistence were included to a lesser extent than the content that was included in the sex- and coexistence education. The teachings in school focused primarily on biological aspects whilst the students prioritized aspects of coexistence. The participants did not consider the school as the main source of information about sex and coexistence. Instead, the students considered friends and family as the primary sources. To decrease the difference between the school and students approach to sex-and coexistence education, an collaboration with external resources should be established. A regional collaboration with affiliates that work with teaching sex and coexistence, like RFSU, could be established in order to gain a larger and abundant content that satisfies the needs of the students.

Drivers for the voluntary adoption of consolidated financial statements in local governments2019In: Public Money & Management, ISSN 0954-0962, E-ISSN 1467-9302Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

IMPACT The study highlights the benefits of a testing period for local government politicians and managers when important accounting reforms, such as implementing consolidated financial statements (CFS), are being introduced. A testing period can enhance knowledge on the accounting standards, as well as improving employees' skills and citizens' perception of local government performance. Central governments are encouraged to provide technical assistance to local governments through training or providing manuals to facilitate the implementation of CFS. Moreover, feedback from the testing period could support the revision of accounting rules and standards.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review and analyze the literature on consolidated financial statements (CFS) in the public sector published from 1980 to 2015 in public sector accounting and management journals, and propose a future research agenda.

    Design/methodology/approach

Adopting a structured literature review methodology, the authors investigate how the CFS literature is developing and what its focus is.

    Findings

The authors identify five major topics: the definition of the consolidation area; the identification of the reporting entity; the private vs public sector accounting standard dichotomy; the relationship with the statistical rules; and the usefulness of CFS.

    Originality/value

The authors analyze these topics, highlighting the growing implementation of CFS in different contexts (mainly focusing on governments outside the USA) and provide suggestions for future research.

Clinical research on peri-implant diseases: consensus report of Working Group 4.2012In: Journal of Clinical Periodontology, ISSN 0303-6979, E-ISSN 1600-051X, Vol. 39, no Suppl 12, p. 202-6Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Two systematic reviews have evaluated the quality of research and reporting of observational studies investigating the prevalence of, the incidence of and the risk factors for peri-implant diseases and of experimental clinical studies evaluating the efficacy of preventive and therapeutic interventions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the improvement of the quality of reporting for both observational and experimental studies, the STROBE and the Modified CONSORT recommendations were encouraged.

RESULTS: To improve the quality of research in peri-implant diseases, the following were recommended: the use of unequivocal case definitions; the expression of outcomes at the subject rather than the implant level; the implementation of study validation tools; the reporting of potential sources of bias; and the use of appropriate statistical methods.

CONCLUSIONS: In observational studies, case definitions for peri-implantitis were agreed. For risk factor determination, the progressive use of cross-sectional and case-control studies (univariate analyses), to prospective cohorts (multilevel modelling for confounding), and ultimately to intervention studies were recommended. For preventive and interventional studies of peri-implant disease management, parallel arm RCTs of at least 6-months were encouraged. For studies of non-surgical and surgical management of peri-implantitis, the use of a composite therapeutic end point was advocated. The development of standard control therapies was deemed essential.

The revitalization of Elfdalian2017In: Proceedings of the 21st FEL Conference: Communities in Control:Learning tools and strategies for multilingualendangered language communities / [ed] Nicholas Ostler, Vera Ferreira and Chris Moseley, 2017, p. 50-57Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article depicts the process of language revitalization of the endangered Elfdalian language spoken in Sweden. Having witnessed a language decline, Ulum Dalska was founded in 1984 with the ambition to revitalize Elfdalian. In 2004, these efforts were boosted due to the joining of the academia and the Municipality of Älvdalen to the revitalization process. Still not recognized as an official language in Sweden, in 2016, Elfdalian acquired an ISO language code and was introduced into the school system. Elfdalian was further empowered by publications in and about the language, as well as a standard orthography, and can thus be seen as both an abstand and an ausbau language. Whether these factors will be sufficient to reverse the language shift and to grant Elfdalian.

Introduktion till älvdalska2015 (ed. 2)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Sommaren 2005 hölls första akademiska kursen i älvdalska någonsin. Kursen hölls i Älvdalen i Uppsala universitets regi. Verket användes även i vuxenkursen i älvdalska i Älvdalen sommaren 2006.

A study-case on a project course: seminars, project, feedback and reflections in the context of a student's active learning2016In: Lärarlärdom 2016: Högskolan Kristianstad / [ed] Claes Dahlqvist & Stefan Larsson, Högskolan Kristianstad: Kristianstad University Press , 2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The paper presents a case-study at Kristianstad University, with the focus on the Software Engineering project based course, given on the second academic year of the programmes within computer science.

This paper discusses the course design with regard to two main parts of the course: seminars and project, and how those were organized in order to facilitate student’s active learning.

The active learning here is focusing on several main factors: course design, course design and its relation to the programme, academic loop (i.e. academic loop is part of a couple of selected courses that develop student’s academical skills), seminars forms, individual feedback and course feedback, as well as documented reflections on project work.

More in deep, the paper presents examples on the pedagogical findings when it comes to seminars organization and how the changes made in the course helped to an increased student active learning. Such information includes: best practice on course design, best practice on seminars exercises, and project work. The results presented are empirical and are based on observations, as well as on a formal and informal feedback.

Moreover, the paper addresses also the theme of the importance of feedback in students’ active learning. Here, feedback is discussed in terms of: student-course instructor feedback, course instructor-student feedback, individual vs. group feedback, and peer-review.

Finally, the paper shows reflections on a two dimensional (2D) survey where the results from 2015 and 2016 are compared and discussed, in order to suggest further improvements for an increased student active learning.

How to increase the students' degree of involvment and participation in project based courses?2016In: Lärarlärdom: 2015, Växjö: Linnéuniversitetet , 2016, p. 182-211Conference paper (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

The degree of students’ involvement and participation in non-examinatory parts of courses at higher level, such as lectures, is often significantly lower than in the examinatory parts. This can especially be seen in project based courses, where the main examination form is done through the application of the-ory into a practical project, rather than through a written examination. More spe-cific, this paper focuses on two such courses, from the area of software engineer-ing. The courses are given on the second, respectively third year, of the Bachelor Programme in Software Development, at Kristianstad University. These are also part of the academic loop of the programmes. Here, the lectures were replaced by seminars based teaching, with the purpose of raising the students’ degree of ac-tive- involvement and participation into the courses, ensuring a better learning quality, enabling more interaction between the groups of students, and finally fa-cilitating a higher application of the theory into the practical project. Through concrete examples, the paper will showcase the changes that were made in these two courses, with regard to the learning outcomes, the academic loop, and forma-tive examination forms, such as seminars, with the purpose of increasing the qual-ity of teaching and learning. Finally, the immediate positive effects of these changes show we need to look further on how we can find more innovative ways of teaching and learning, especially in the project based courses, in order to in-crease student’s degree of involvement and participation.

The analysis of antecedents of bank-SME loyalty: professionalism, relationship quality, corporate image & switching barrier as a moderator2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to combine the various concepts, in the field of SME in service based industry, being developed independently by researchers. The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview on the rules and interactions of the involved factors. An investigation of the influence of corporate image and relationship quality on customer loyalty, among SMEs in the banking sector, is carried out. The moderating role of switching barrier is investigated. Furthermore the background variables, affecting relationship quality and corporate image, are investigated. This provides a deeper understanding on how customer loyalty is achieved. Such a deeper understanding on achieving customer loyalty can be regarded as a competitive tool especially in the banking sector with many financial providers and the products being alike. This article is based on 335 valid questionnaires returned from SME customers established in Sweden. The negative impact of Switching barrier on customer loyalty indicates that switching barrier should be avoided thus it decreases customer loyalty and does not have a moderating role. Instead focus should be put on delivering high professionalism which will contribute to higher level of relationship quality and positive perception of corporate image. This, in turn, will eliminate the moderating role of switching barrier and lead to customer loyalty.

Studenters val av bank: demografiska skillnaders påverkan på konsumentbeteenden vad gäller banktjänster2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Students today, in the banking system, are the least loyal group. Students are also the most costly group due to the large investments, made by the banks, for them. Banks have generalized all students in one category and have adapted their offering regardless of students’ social statues. As the students banking needs are dependent on their position in their lifecycle, generalizing them in one group is not optimal.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate those factors which influence students’ choice of bank. Students are divided into two subcategories namely traditional students and non-traditional students. Non-traditional students are those who are married, cohabiting, having children, or studying part time. Students which do not fall into these four conditions are regarded as traditional students. The difference in banking needs of these two subcategories of students is also investigated.

A model, based on the secondary data, was built and subsequently tested on raw data resulting in a quantitative study. The primary data was collected through visitor surveys from students at Lund University. A total of 306 questionnaires were collected during three days whereas 280 of them were used as the basis of the results.

The results showed a significant difference between traditional and non-traditional students’ banking needs. The two sub-categories are influenced by different factors when choosing a bank. The results are graphically and numerically presented in graphs and tables respectively.

As opposed to previous studies on this field, treating all students as a homogenous group, this thesis have considered students’ social statue also into account. The results of this thesis can therefore be of benefit, for the banks, to understand the different banking needs among students.

Professionalism and relationship quality in banks: SME perspective2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the paper is to understand how SMEs perceive professionalism its influences on the customer loyalty of the banks they work with. This is being explored through investigating the black box found in the relationship between these two concepts. The paper hypotheses that corporate image and relationship quality are the intervening variables in the professionalism relationship to customer loyally, while switching barriers are then serve as moderators of the relationship between corporate image and relationship quality and customer loyalty. The paper is based on a survey answered by 335 owners of SMEs in Sweden. The findings of the paper indicate that 1) increasing perception of banks’ professionalism has a positive impact on banks’ corporate image and on the relationship quality SME possesses, 2) increasing positive perception of the banks’ corporate image and increasing relationship quality leads to higher customer loyalty, 3) switching barriers do not moderate the relationship between perceived corporate image and relationship quality of the bank SME works with, 4) that perceived corporate image and relationship quality mediate the relationship between perceived professionalism of the bank in its influence on customer loyalty of SME to its bank.

    Abstract [sv]

What Clippy and Tux can teach us: incorporating affective aspects into pedagogy2012In: Högskolepedagogisk debatt, ISSN 2000-9216, no 1, p. 47-56Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is an umbrella domain for many areas of study. This paper will look at those topics of HCI known as affective aspects. Affective aspects investigate emotional responses that the user communicates, both verbally and physically, when working with a computer including before and after the work is done. This paper examines the question of improving pedagogy and curriculum, if teachers are more aware of some HCI affective aspects. Clarified and discussed are three areas of affective aspects known as affordances, constraints, and anthropomorp- hisms. Posited is the need to aim for positive emotions as a learning task goal, as well as increasing positive backwash when working with computers and computer pro- grams, as opposed to any engagement resulting in negative ones. Another aspect con- sidered is how and why a user will give underlying human properties to objects, in this case the technology used. Finally, a reflection is given on how consideration of affective aspects can help teachers imbue technological pedagogy when creating a curriculum for a more positive student experience.

First record of soft-shelled turtles (cryptodira, trionychidae) from the late cretaceous of Europe2012In: Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, ISSN 0272-4634, E-ISSN 1937-2809, Vol. 32, no 5, p. 1027-1032Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Fossil soft-shelled turtles (Trionychidae) have so far been recognized in all continents except Antarctica, based largely on remains preserving their diagnostic sculptured shell bones. The origin of the group is generally assumed to be in the Early Cretaceous of Asia, whereas they first appear in North America and Europe during the Late Cretaceous and Paleocene, respectively. Here we describe the first record of an indeterminate trionychid from the late early Campanian from southern Sweden, a part of the paleobiogeographically isolated Fenno-Scandian Shield, thus extending the stratigraphic record of the group in Europe back about 15 Ma into the Late Cretaceous. Our finding provides evidence against the currently favored dispersal scenario in which trionychid turtles are interpreted to have come to Europe first during the Paleocene either directly from North America or via Asia. The described indeterminate trionychid possibly represents a relic of a pre-Cretaceous endemic radiation of North European trionychids living mainly on the Fenno-Skandian Shield or it may indicate a potential lower latitude dispersal route of trionychids from Asia to North America via Europe during the Late Cretaceous.

Food of tardigrades: a case study to understand food choice, intake and digestion2011In: Journal of Zoological Systematics and Evolutionary Research, ISSN 0947-5745, E-ISSN 1439-0469, Vol. 49, no Suppl. 1, p. 66-70Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mosses are an excellent habitat for tardigrades because of their ability to ensure a high humidity and to provide a rich food supply for both carnivorous and herbivorous species. Food choice can be correlated with the morphology of the buccal apparatus, and consequentially, their distribution is sometimes linked to food availability (nematodes, rotifers, plant cells, algae, yeast and bacteria). In many species, material containing chlorophyll is often observed in the midgut. However, little information has been available until now on the actual food preference of tardigrades. Since trophic interactions within soil food webs are difficult to study, here we use a polymerase chain reaction–based approach as a highly sensitive detection method. The study was carried out to investigate the presence of chlorophyll matter in the gut of active specimens, based on sequence analyses of the chloroplast ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit (rbcL) gene from mosses and algae. The sequences found in the gut of Macrobiotus sapiens were derived from the moss families Pottiaceae and Erpodiaceae, in Macrobiotus persimilis and Echiniscus granulatus from the moss family Grimmiaceae, and in Richtersius coronifer from the green algae genus Trebouxia. Furthermore, we show the emission of green autofluorescence from the chloroplasts in the algae within the gut of tardigrades and followed the progress of digestion over a 48-h period. The autofluorescent emission level declined significantly, and after 2 days, the signal level was similar to the level of the starved control.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND ITS INFLUENCE ON RISK PROPENSITY AND FIRM PERFORMANCE - An empirical study of their relations in the banking sector 2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to study the influence of differently composed boards of directors, on the firm performance and the companies’ risk propensity. Thereby, the boards of the fifty largest financial institutions worldwide over the period 2005-2008 are studied. The particular focus lies on the board composition variables percentages of female, ethnic minority and independent directors, as well as, average age of the board members and board size. The research is unique because the boards’ risk propensity is studied the first time. As its determinants act the measures debt-ratio and B.I.S. total capital ratio. Besides, the firm performance indicators return on assets and return on equity were completed by the share performance and the cost/income ratio.

The results of the empirical research indicates that gender and ethnic diversity on the board, as well as, a higher number of outside independent directors and a higher average board age influence firm performance positively. Contrary to this, an increased board size has a negative influence on a bank’s financial performance. Considering the risk, a higher average board age, as well as, greater ethnic diversity and an increased number of independent directors have a negative relation to the risk propensity. Female directors and the size of the board are not connected to this measure. Another result was that during the year of the financial crisis the relations between the variables changed and there is no specific board composition that can withstand a situation like this exceptionally well compared to others.

Stress och sociala medier bland gymnasister2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Frequent visitors at the psychiatric emergency room (PER) constitute a small subgroup of patients, yet they are responsible for a disproportionate number of visits and thus claim considerable resources. Their needs are often left unmet and their repetitive visits reflect their dissatisfaction as well as that of PERs' staff. Motivated by these dilemmas, this study systematically reviews the literature about frequent visitors at PER and seeks to answer two questions: What characterizes frequent visitors at PER in the literature? and What characterizes PER in the literature? Based on 29 studies, this paper offers answers to the two questions based on a strength weakness opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis. The results of the review and subsequent analysis of the literature revealed the multiplicity and complexity of frequent visitors' characteristics and how they appear to converge. Commonalities were more difficult to identify in PER characteristics. In some cases, this happened because the characteristics were poorly described or were context specific. As a result, it was not easy to compare the studies on PER. Based on SWOT and the findings of the analysis, the paper proposes new venues of research and suggests how the field of mental health might develop by taking into account its opportunities and threats.

Persons who frequently visit psychiatric emergency rooms (PERs) account for a disproportionately high number of total visits to PERs. They have needs just as any other human beings do. Yet in addition, they also have specific daily function needs, service needs, and needs for professional healthcare.  The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate who persons frequently visiting PERs in Sweden are and what needs they have. Both studies I and II were conducted in southern Sweden. Study I is a quantitative mapping study describing who persons who frequently visit PERs are, what characterizes them, and what characterizes their visits, while study II investigates their self-expressed and selfassessed needs using a mixed-methods design.  For data collection, a large-scale registry was used in study I, while in study II an interviewer-administered manual was applied consisting of open-ended questions and validated instruments covering the person-in-care’s needs assessment, alcohol and drug use, exposure to violence, and social network. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests (I, II) and qualitative data were analysed using qualitative content analysis (II).  The results indicate that persons who frequently visit PERs represented 8.1% of the total number of PER visitors but accounted for 38.3% of the total number of PER visits (I). They differed significantly from the rest of the PER visitors in terms of gender, diagnoses, hospital admissions, and temporal patterns of visits. Differences were also found in the distance between the PERs and the home municipalities of the visitors (I). In addition, they reported problems in many need areas in life, involving physical and psychiatric health problems as well as financial, emotional, and social problems (II). Results also indicate that they are often subject to violence and have limited social networks (II).  The results may be used for planning, developing, and evaluating interventions targeting the needs of persons who frequently visit PERs, which is in line with a person-centred approach. Such an approach might eventually address their needs better, reduce their suffering, and consequently result in fewer PER visits.
