A comparison between a traditional and an online environmental educational program2006In: The Journal of Environmental Education, ISSN 0095-8964, E-ISSN 1940-1892, Vol. 37, no 4, p. 45-54Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The authors compared traditional and Web-based versions of an environmental education program in terms of their effectiveness in raising knowledge and promoting attitudes of environmental issues. They used a pretest?posttest nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental design. Results showed a statistically significant increase of knowledge scores for both groups. The junior high students who received computer-assisted instruction (CAI) significantly outscored their peers who were taught traditionally in posttest knowledge scores. In addition, the CAI group demonstrated a significant increase in attitudes scores. The authors found the correlation coefficient between knowledge and attitudes to be statistically significant but low.

Cata - a former homeland village affected by Betterment, Eastern Cape, South Africa2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study focus on the house ruins and land use in Nyokana, a former village section in Cata, by looking at their location, number and the people who lived there and their living before the Betterment plan was carried through. This is done by studying an old map and documents of Cata, field studies with GPS-using and by interviewing mostly old inhabitants. The result is a basis for the development of the planned tourism track within the heritage project, wich runs by BRC and University of Fort Hare.

A flyway perspective of foraging activity in Eurasian Green-winged Teal, Anas crecca crecca2007In: Canadian Journal of Zoology, ISSN 0008-4301, E-ISSN 1480-3283, Vol. 85, no 1, p. 81-91Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Time-activity budgets in the family Anatidae are available for the wintering and breeding periods. We present the first flyway-level study of foraging time in a long-distance migrant, the Eurasian Green-winged Teal, Anas crecca crecca L., 1758 ("Teal"). Behavioral data from early and late spring staging, breeding, and molting sites were collected with standardized protocols to explore differences between the, sexes, seasons, and diel patterns. Teal foraging activity was compared with that of the Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos L., 1758 and Northern Shoveler, Anas clypeata L., 1758, and the potential effects of duck density and predator-caused disturbance were explored. In early spring, foraging time was moderate (50.5%) and mostly nocturnal (45%). It increased dramatically in all three species at migration stopovers and during molt, mostly because of increased diurnal foraging, while nocturnal foraging remained fairly constant along the flyway. These patterns adhere to the "income breeding" strategy expected for this species. No differences between the sexes were recorded in either species studied. Teal foraging time was positively correlated with density of Teal and all ducks present, but negatively correlated with predator disturbance. Our study suggests that Teal, in addition to being income breeders, may also be considered as income migrants; they find the energy necessary to migrate at staging sites along the flyway.

Experimental functional response and inter-individual variation in foraging rate of teal (Anas crecca)2007In: Behavioural Processes, ISSN 0376-6357, E-ISSN 1872-8308, Vol. 75, no 1, p. 66-71Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The functional response, i.e. the change in per capita food intake rate per time unit with changed food availability, is a widely used too] for understanding the ecology and behaviour of animals. However, waterfowl remain poorly explored in this context. In an aviary experiment we derived a functional response curve for teal (Anas crecca) foraging on rice (Oryza sativa) seeds. We found a linear relationship between intake rate and seed density, as expected for a filter-feeder. At high seed densities we found a threshold, above which intake rate still increased linearly but with a lower slope, possibly reflecting a switch from filter-feeding to a scooping foraging mode. The present study shows that food intake rate in teal is linearly related to food availability within the range of naturally occurring seed densities, a finding with major implications for management and conservation of wetland habitats.

    Ecology of spring-migrating Anatidae: a review2006In: Journal of Ornithology = Journal fur Ornithologie, ISSN 0021-8375, E-ISSN 1439-0361, Vol. 147, no 2, p. 167-184Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Spring migration is generally considered as a crucial period of the year for many birds, not the least due to its supposed importance for subsequent breeding success. By reviewing the existing literature for Anatidae (ducks, geese, and swans), we show that little is known about their ecology in spring, although some goose species are exceptions. Another general pattern is that the ecology of Anatidae at staging sites is particularly neglected. Existing studies tend to focus on questions dealing with acquisition of nutrient reserves, whereas almost nothing has been published about stopover habitats, time use, microhabitat use, foraging behaviour, food availability, food limitation, diet selection, and interspecific relationships. Besides summarising present knowledge, we identify taxonomic groups and topics for which gaps of knowledge appear the most evident, thereby also highlighting research needs for the future.

Average mass of seeds encountered by foraging dabbling ducks in western Europe2007In: Wildlife Biology, ISSN 0909-6396, E-ISSN 1903-220X, Vol. 13, no 3, p. 328-336Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Many dabbling ducks Anas spp. are largely granivorous, consuming a variety of seeds chiefly from aquatic plants. To assess the relative value and carrying capacity of wetlands for dabbling ducks, species-specific information about seed mass is needed, but it is still largely missing or scattered in the literature. By combining weights of seeds collected in the field with a literature review, we provide a reference table for seed mass of 200 western European plant taxa frequently encountered by foraging dabbling ducks. Seeds collected in the field were sampled in microhabitats and at depths at which ducks were observed to forage, and study sites represent wintering, staging as well as breeding areas within a flyway in western Europe. When combined with calorimetric data, the present reference table will aid managers and scientists in assessing the importance of seed food resources at different sites and during different parts of the annual cycle.

From a necessary evil to a nature type worth protect - a studie of the Calluna heath of Sandsjöbacka & Grönabur2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

In the middle of the 19th century was Calluna heath the major nature type in Halland, but the remaining parts today is only 1 500 hectares which is a 99 % decrease of the Calluna heath mainly due to an increase in forest plantations and arable fields. I have made a quantitative study how the Calluna heath of Grönabur & Sandsjöbacka has changed between 1841 and 2005 and why it didn’t disappear in the same manner, as it did in other parts of Halland.

The studying of original sources as historical maps, literature and by doing field visits has been significant for the final result. The main reason for the different development of the Calluna heath in the investigation area (69 % decrease), compare to elsewhere in Halland, is the establishment and management of a nature reserve.

    Abstract [sv]

This rapport handles the presence of two kinds of watermills in the Swedish landscape. The first is a small type with a horizontal shovel blade and the other a bigger kind with a vertical standing shovel scoop. The rapport seeks for information of their capacity and how long they existed as flour producing units. A important issue is how small can a brook be and still run a mill. Finally the reasons for their disappearance in one selected parish is shown.

Development and application of an analytical protocol for evaluation of treatment processes for landfill leachates: I. Development of an analytical protocol for handling organic compounds in complex leachate samples2007In: International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, ISSN 0306-7319, E-ISSN 1029-0397, Vol. 87, no 1, p. 1-15Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A strategy is presented for evaluation of treatment procedures for landfill leachate with emphasis on organic pollutants. An analytical scheme, the LAQUA protocol, was developed as a guide for the analytical work. The protocol includes organic as well as metals,. inorganic ions, water-quality parameters, and toxicity. The proposed strategy considers the behaviour of both polar and non-polar organic substances at trace levels. For polar substances, phenols were chosen as markers and determined with an automated supported liquid membrane extraction device, coupled on-line to HPLC with a diode-array detector. For non-polar substances, PCBs and 10 unidentified compounds were chosen as markers and analysed by solid-phase extraction combined with supercritical fluid extraction with GC analysis. The chosen measurement strategy, based on the use of marker substances, difference measurements, and versatile data-handling procedures, provided essential information about complex systems at relatively low cost.

Rening av oljeförorenat vatten med torvabsorbent2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Faecal contaminants in edible bivalves from Maputo Bay, Mozambique: seasonal distribution, pathogenesis and antibiotic resistance2008In: Open Nutrition Journal, ISSN 1874-2882, Vol. 2, p. 86-93Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In Maputo, Mozambique marine bivalves considerably contribute to the diet of the population. This study aimed to investigate seasonal distribution of Escherichia coli and Salmonella in clams from Maputo Bay, and examine their pathogenesis and antibiotic-resistant patterns. Standard multiple tube method revealed that the concentration of coliforms in all samples exceeded the limit for direct consumption, according to EU standards. Thirty-eight percent of the samples contained >60,000 MPN per 100 gram flesh. The occurrence of E. coli did not differ significantly due to season, while Salmonella was present in 100% of the samples during the rainy period and only in 30% during the dry. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction showed that 45% of E. coli isolates were positive for the virulent indicator gene fimA. The Salmonella isolates were identified as S. enterica serovar Typhimurium. Among other isolated coliformic Enterobacteriaceae, Shigella sp. (specie), which in low doses can cause severe gastrointestinal infections, was identified. Antimicrobial susceptibility, recorded by the disk diffusion method, showed resistance to the most commonly used antibiotics. This high levels of faecal contaminants in the clams points out the need for risk assessment and sanitary improvements.

En kartläggning av funktionsbrister i First Class – Med fokus på användbarhet 2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Density-dependent breeding success in mallards Anas platyrhynchos on a eutrophic lake2003In: Wildlife Biology, ISSN 0909-6396, E-ISSN 1903-220X, Vol. 9, no 1, p. 67-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Census data from a eutrophic lake collected in 1987-1999 were used to study nesting and breeding success in mallards Anas platyrhynchos. In each year there were 6-19 pair counts and 13-34 brood counts. The maximum combined count of single males and pairs (i.e. on any day in any of three census periods in May) provided the best fit with subsequent estimates of breeding success. Nesting success (average brood:pair ratio = 0.52), brood size of older ducklings (mean = 5.7) as well as fledgling success (2.86 juveniles per nesting pair) were higher than in many previous mallard studies. Per capita brood production as well as per capita fledgling production was negatively density dependent, but the latter was not statistically independent of the former. There was no correlation between per capita fledgling success and duckling mortality on a year-by-year basis, hence the density-dependent pattern in breeding success appears to be mediated through variation in nesting success. The number of paired females at the start of the breeding season correlated positively with the production of fledged juveniles the year before.

Manipulated density of adult mallards affects nest survival differently in different landscapes2007In: Canadian Journal of Zoology, ISSN 0008-4301, E-ISSN 1480-3283, Vol. 85, no 5, p. 589-595Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Breeding success in many birds including wildfowl is mainly determined by nest predation. Few studies address cues used by predators to find duck nests, and the same is true for spacing patterns that ducks might use to reduce predation. We designed a crossover experiment in agricultural and forested settings to test the assumption that nest predation rate is related to density of adult birds on a lake. We used introduced wing-clipped mallards (Anas platyrhynchos L., 1758) to increase local pair density and semi-natural nests to assess predation rate. Depredation patterns were analyzed by model fitting in program MARK, using introduction and landscape type as main effects and abundance of avian predators and wild waterbirds as covariates. Depredation was higher at agricultural lakes than at forest lakes. Nest survival decreased with increasing abundance of wild waterfowl, whereas it tended to increase with the abundance of "other waterbirds". There was a landscape-dependent effect of increased mallard pair density: positive at agricultural lakes and negative at forest lakes. Avian predators found 91% of depredated "known-predator" nests at agricultural lakes and 25% at forest lakes; mammals found 9% at agricultural lakes and 75% at forest lakes. The landscape-dependent density effect may in part be due to different predator communities in these landscape types.

Within-season sequential density dependence regulates breeding success in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos)2005In: Oikos, ISSN 0030-1299, E-ISSN 1600-0706, Vol. 108, no 3, p. 582-590Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Density dependence in vital rates is a key issue in population ecology but remains largely unexplored experimentally. We studied breeding success, lake use, and prey availability in wild mallards Anas platyrhynchos on small nemoral lakes in a replicated, two-year cross-over experiment in which pair density was increased. The number of wild mallards that settled on lakes prior to introductions of extra pairs did not differ between control and introduction years. Introductions led to a lake-level reduction in the number of broods observed. However, the number of stage 2+ (almost fledged) ducklings did not differ between treatments, nor did lake utilization by nonbreeding adults, broods and ducklings. Prey resource availability differed greatly among lakes, but it did not correlate with breeding success. Partialling out the possible effect of food competition from wild adult nonbreeding mallards did not change this conclusion. Our study demonstrates sequential density dependence in breeding success; introductions caused a decrease in brood number, but despite fewer broods a similar number of nearly fledged ducklings were produced. We suggest that predation and/or lake change of broods soon after hatching created these patterns. We conclude that using a single and late measure of breeding success such as fledged birds can mask regulatory processes. Implications of density dependence and its relation to individual reproductive success are understood better if breeding success is decomposed into nest success, duckling survival and fledgling survival.

Early breeding teal Anas crecca use the best lakes and have the highest reproductive success2005In: Annales Zoologici Fennici, ISSN 0003-455X, E-ISSN 1797-2450, Vol. 42, no 1, p. 37-43Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Teal (Anas crecca) broods were studied in 1988-2003 in a boreal watershed comprising 51 permanent wetlands. Brood size of near-fledged ducklings was negatively related to the hatching date, i.e. early pairs had higher reproductive success than late pairs. However, brood size of newly hatched ducklings was not related to the hatching date, implying that the advantage of early breeding is due to processes operating during the brood stage rather than during nesting. Half of the lakes never produced a brood, and among the 26 lakes that actually did, two `preferred' lakes generated 44% of the broods and 55% of the near-fledged ducklings. Early broods were over-represented on such `preferred' lakes, and late broods over-represented on `less preferred' lakes. Our study suggests that lake selection and early nesting may have important fitness consequences in teal.

Breeding success of sympatric dabbling ducks in relation to population density and food resources2003In: Oikos, ISSN 0030-1299, E-ISSN 1600-0706, Vol. 100, no 2, p. 333-341Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Breeding success in sympatric mallard Anas platyrhynchos, teal A. crecca and wigeon A. penelope in a boreal watershed in Finland was studied for 12 years. Benthic and surface-emerging prey animals were trapped to obtain annual indices of food abundance. Mallard and teal were equally abundant over the years, being roughly twice as numerous as wigeon. Pair density, brood:pair ratio and duckling:pair ratio were used to test the hypothesis that per capita breeding success decreases in a density-dependent fashion as either pair density or the number of nesting pairs per available food unit increases. In mallard we found no density-dependent patterns at all. In teal per capita brood production decreased as prey animals became relatively scarcer, but this interpretation may not be robust. In wigeon, however, there were two independent significant patterns of direct density-dependence in a temporal succession, i.e. between pair density and per capita brood production in the early part of the breeding season, and then between per capita abundance of surface-emerging insect prey and the number of ducklings per pair. Despite wide dietary overlap and frequent co-occurrence on single lakes among species in the guild, we found no evidence for interspecific density-dependent effects. We hypothesize that there is no or infrequent food limitation for breeding dabblers in this system, and that behavior may be the process behind the pattern of density-dependence in wigeon.

The scientific basis for a new and sustainable management of migratory European ducks2006In: Wildlife Biology, ISSN 0909-6396, E-ISSN 1903-220X, Vol. 12, no 2, p. 121-127Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It is an axiom in ecology that knowing the sheer number of individuals in a population is of very little help if the objective is to understand future and past changes in population size. Yet, this is exactly how migratory European ducks are monitored, many of which are important quarry species in several countries. We argue that present monitoring is insufficient to address objectives of wise use and sustainability such as those emphasised in recent management directives and multilateral international agreements. The two main problems are the almost total lack of reliable data on recruitment and mortality. We advocate a pan-European monitoring system based on undisputed scientific principles; i.e. a long-term, coordinated and standardised scheme that produces data about vital rates of duck populations as well as about harvest size. Data from such a scheme can be used by game biologists to produce predictive tools, thus providing a functional basis for management decisions for adaptive harvesting and conservation alike.

Bernstorps mosse - historisk markanvändning och nutida skötsel2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The quality of lower secondary students' discussions during labwork in chemistry2008In: Eurasia Journal of Mathematics, Science & Technology Education, ISSN 1305-8223, Vol. 4, no 3, p. 247-254Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this project is to study the quality of the discussions in groups of students during laboratory work. The project builds on a study of the role of communication in science classrooms with students aged 14-15 years. An intervention with role-playing for example reporting to another group is carried out to foster discourses that focus students’ use of science knowledge. The discussions have been divided into sequences. In each sequence the students are discussing one separate part of the lab work activity. A revised version of the SOLO-taxonomy has been used in the analysis of tape recordings from students’ discussions during lab work and from the reporting to another group. The students talk about the experimental procedure as well as the science content. In most of the groups the analysis show a long-term development towards higher quality mixed with unistructural sequences. During the reporting to another group the students describe the experiment using new knowledge and new concepts. Almost all the reporting groups use two or more concepts well integrated. The reporting to another group stimulates students’ discussions. The SOLOtaxonomy makes it possible to assess group learning and interaction in lab groups.

    Abstract [en]

The main aim of this project was to study young people’s ability to use science knowledge when talking about and explaining everyday phenomena involving transformations of matter. Students’ individual knowledge was studied both as their spontaneous explanations and as their explanations with appropriate help in discussions with the researcher or with other students. The framework for learning in this study was a social constructivist perspective of learning. In the project students discussed everyday phenomena with peers and with the researcher. The role of the discourse was stressed in the interviews as well as the development of students’ use of their mental models when explaining everyday phenomena. Data were gathered through four interviews with each one of 40 students, between 9 and 11 years of age.. The development of the basic particle model was one of the themes during the instructional units. Other recurrent themes were states of matter, gases and chemical reaction. Most of the students were able to use knowledge of science when talking about known everyday phenomena. Almost all of the students in the group developed the use of their own mental models during the project.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Frågorna sätts genom konkreta exempel in i sitt sammanhang i nordisk matematikdidaktik.
