Naturvetenskapens bärande idéer för förskollärare2016 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

"I drew first then I wrote": nine-year old students' apprehensions of sociosemiotic resources and conceptions of assessment when creating multimodal texts2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this interview study is to analyze what modalities the nine-year old students in public school prefer to use in their meaning making in multimodal text productions which will be evaluated by their teacher.

Theoretically, the study is based on linguistic sociocultural, sociosemiotic and second language research.

The included interviews with nine-year old students (n=15) focus on what sociosemiotic resources the students’ have used in their multimodal texts each about the theme Stone Age.

The analyses show that most of the students - regardless of linguistic background - express that they prefer using images instead of written text for text production. If they are able to choose, one third prefers to use the computer and one third prefers to express them by making a drama or a movie. Most of the students have difficulties in verbalizing their thoughts on assessment and do not understand how or in what way the teacher will evaluate their text productions, even if the teacher has formulated what is being asked for from the students.

"I drew first then I wrote": nine-year old students' ideas on their choice of sociosemiotic resources and conceptions of assessment when creating multimodal texts2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research focusing multimodal aspects of children's literacy development exists, but there are few studies investigating students' own perspectives on their choice of semiotic resources and conceptions of assessment, when creating multimodal texts at school. The study presented therefore aims at analyzing what modalities the students prefer to use in their meaning making when producing multimodal texts that will be evaluated by their teacher.

Theoretically, the study is based on linguistic sociocultural (Vygotskij, 1978; Säljö, 2014), sociosemiotic research (Kress 2003; Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2006; Løvland, 2006) and second language research (Axelsson, 1998; Cummins, 2001; Damber, 2010).

The aim of this interview study is to analyze what modalities the students prefer to use in their meaning making in multimodal text productions which will be evaluated by their teacher. The material discussed includes texts and interviews produced by nine-year old students attending mainstream classrooms during the school year 2012/2013, while they were producing one multimodal text each about the Stone Age. Since the text productions already have been analyzed and reported (Borgfeldt and Lyngfelt 2014), the study presented here includes interviews with the individual students (n=15) and a discussion related to the earlier analysis on the sociosemiotic resources in the students' text productions.

The interviews show that most of the students - regardless of linguistic background - express that they prefer using images instead of written text for text production. If they are able to choose, one third prefers to use the computer and one third prefers to express themselves by making a drama or a movie. Most of the students have difficulties in verbalizing their thoughts on assessment and do not understand how or in what way the teacher will evaluate their text production, even if the teacher has formulated what is being asked for from the students. Thus, there seems to be a risk for discrepancy between the students' preferences and ideas of qualities in their multimodal meaning making, and the teacher's evaluation of their works. To decrease this risk the students need to understand more of what is being asked for, and why, when creating multimodal texts for their text productions.

The research illustrates that most of the students – regardless of linguistic background – prefer to express themselves through images instead of written text in their text productions. If the students can choose, one third prefers to do the assignment using a computer, another third by playing it out as a play, and the rest like to complete the assignment either by making a movie or by drawing and writing with paper and pencil. Most of the students have difficulties in verbalizing their thoughts about how they will be evaluated. Even when the teacher has formulated what is being asked for from the assignment, the students do not understand how, or in what way, the teacher will evaluate their text productions. Thus, there is risk for discrepancy between the students' preferences and ideas of qualities in their multimodal meaning making, and the teacher's evaluation of their works. To decrease this risk, the students need more thorough instructions in order to understand better of what is being asked for and how the assignment will be assessed.

    Abstract [sv]

Multilingual third-year students' text production and the role of multimodality when developing literacy2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How do young, multilingual students develop their text production and to what extent do they express themselves using multimodality? Is there a difference between multilingual students’ use of semiotic resources and other students? If that is the case, what kind of semiotic resources do the multilingual pupils prefer, and in what ways can the resources be said to create meaning? And if the multilingual students prefer these semiotic resources, how are their texts being valued within the school culture, and used for developing literacy? The study presented includes texts produced by third-year multilingual students attending ‘mainstream’ classrooms during the school year 2012/2013. It consists of qualitatively oriented  sociosemiotic, multimodal text analyses and teacher interviews. Theoretically, the study is based on linguistic and sociosemiotic research (Jewitt, 2009; G. Kress, 2003; GR Kress, 2010; GR Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2006; Løvland, 2006; Tønnessen, 2010) and second language research (Axelsson, 1998; Cummins 2001; Otterup, 2005). Fundamental is the fact that homogenisation characterizes the perception of multilingual students (Feinberg, 2000). Also, the idea that multilingual students literacy development benefits from meaningful negotiation, focusing on a variety of semiotic resources, is a basic argument in the study.

Multimodal text production, multilingualism and assessment: teachers' perspectives on multimodality when evaluating textproductions in third grade2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Why is it important to discuss multimodality in school? In what ways do teachers focus on how various multimodal aspects work together and strengthen each other? Why is it important that students receive instruction in the use of different multimodal semiotic resources? This qualitative semi-structured interview study examined how and in what ways a primary school teacher focuses on multimodal aspects when evaluating and assessing her 9-10-year-old students’ text productions.Theoretically, the study is based on linguistic sociocultural (Vygotskij, 1978; Säljö, 2014), socio semiotic research (Kress 2003; Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2006; Løvland, 2006) and second language research (Axelsson, 1998; Cummins,2001; Damber, 2010). The aim of this interviewstudy is to analyze what modalities the teacher stresses when evaluating her students’ meaningmaking in their multimodal text productions. The material discussed includes texts and interviews produced by 9-10-year old students (n=15)attending a mainstream classroom in a multicultural area during the school year 2012/2013, while they produced one multimodal text each about the Stone Age. Since the text productions and the interviews with the students already have been analyzed and reported (Borgfeldt and Lyngfelt 2014, 2015), this study presents interviews with the teacher and a discussion related to the earlier analysis on the socio semiotic resources in the students' textproductions. The interviews show that the teacher begins by reading their images. Then she realizes how the students combine their images with written text and other semiotic resources when creating meaning in their multimodal texts. She is surprised that all students will choose the image whether they are native or second language speakers. Based on the criteria for the specific task, the teacher focuses on the semiotic resources, image and color, when evaluating the text productions. Her assessment then extends further to account for that the students are graded based on; "accuracy", "detail", "colormeaning" and "the overall quality of the text". In the interviews, the teacher describes in a positive way how the literacy development is progressing among most of the students both in and outside the classroom. It is important that the students –regardless of linguistic backgrounds – have the ability to utilize multiple semiotic resources when expressing themselves in multimodal texts. The teacher claims that there is not enough time to discuss the test productions with each student separately. This suggests there seems to be a problem between the formulation of the assignment and how to read and comment the text productions in a multimodal way.

    Abstract [sv]

Robotics and early-years stem education – the botSTEM project2021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

botSTEM is an ERASMUS+ project aiming to raise the utilisation of inquiry-based collaborative learning and robot-enhanced education. The project outputs are specifically aimed to provide in- and pre-service teachers in Childhood and Primary Education, and children aged between 4 and 8, with research-based materials and practices that use integrated Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) and robot-based approaches, including code-learning, for enhancing scientific literacy in young children. This presentation presents initial results in terms of a collection of tested educational practices summarized in a freely downloadable Toolkit, and results from a qualitative analysis of implemented activities in Swedish preschools. The preliminary analysis of the implementations indicates that robots function as motivation factors in young children’s inquiry of science and engineering design technology, in both teacher and children initiated learning situations.. Also, when compared, digital programming with a use of robots promotes discussions among teachers and children that involve more versatile robotic words then un-plugged programming does.

Att upptäcka naturvetenskap: i förskolan2021 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Teaching chemistry and physics in preschool: a matter of establishing intersubjectivity2019In: International Journal of Science Education, ISSN 0950-0693, E-ISSN 1464-5289, Vol. 41, no 17, p. 2542-2556Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes analysis of teaching instances that are part of an in-service preschool teachers programme about chemistry and physics in preschool. The aim is to develop knowledge about the communication established between teacher and children in relation to an object of learning, specifically the role of intersubjective communication in relation to an object of learning. A set of science activities with a specified object of learning was developed in groups of teachers and researchers. A qualitative analysis of the communication in relation to the chosen object of learning was performed. The focus of the analysis was excerpts representing differences in intersubjectivity related to the object of learning and what can be said to characterise the communication between teachers and children in these situations. The results show that intersubjectivity can occur in different ways with different consequences for children’s opportunities to experience the intended object of learning. In connection to this, the importance of teachers having a mutual simultaneity in the communication with children about a specific content is highlighted. The teachers have to create links between the child’s perspective and the object of learning. Intermediary objects of learning are discussed as supporting elements in the conquest of new knowledge.

The role of intermediary objects of learning in early years chemistry and physics2020In: Early Childhood Education Journal, ISSN 1082-3301, E-ISSN 1573-1707, Vol. 48, no 5, p. 585-595Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of the present study is to study model-based teaching and collaborative inquiry learning of chemical processes and physical phenomena in preschool, with a specific focus on the verbal communication established between teachers and children (4-5 years old). According to variation theory, learning is always directed at a specific content, called the object of learning. This study aims at highlighting what ‘threatens’ the teacher’s and preschool children’s intersubjectivity during the teaching of chemistry and physics content, and at discussing possible ways to continue the teaching of an object of learning, once sufficient intersubjectivity in a teaching/learning situation has been lost. The result shows the need for the teacher to divide and split a larger object of learning, such as e.g. water purification, into smaller learning steps ‘on the way’ in order to hinder breaks in intersubjectivity that otherwise may arise. We introduce the notion of ‘overarching object of learning’ and ‘intermediary object of learning’, and the intermediary objects of learning identified in this study are categorized as belonging to three different themes: the role of words, the role of theoretical models and science concepts and the role of analogies and abstractions. The teacher’s awareness of intermediary objects of learning as critical aspects for children’s individual learning is crucial for the teaching of everyday science in a preschool setting.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Teachers’ and children’s use of words during early childhood STEM teaching supported by robotics2021In: International Journal of Early Years Education, ISSN 0966-9760, E-ISSN 1469-8463, p. 1-16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With science and digitalisation emphasised further in the new Swedish preschool curriculum, there is a need to clarify teachers’ role in educating children in and about these areas. With research pointing out the importance of a conscious language use in STEM teaching, we here focus on words used by teachers and children during inquiry-based STEM activities in five different preschools. Bers’ powerful ideas about early childhood computational thinking (Bers 2018. Coding as a Playground. New York: Routledge.) were used for analysis and results highlight how digital programming and use of robots can promote a more versatile use of robotic words, compared to analogue, ‘unplugged’, programming without robots. Furthermore, it is also found that use of precise decontextualised language by the teacher seems to stimulate children’s use of words related to STEM and the object of learning. The findings add to the discussion about how teachers can scaffold children’s learning by inquiry teaching of STEM supported by robotics.

Spanish and Swedish teachers’ perspective of teaching STEM scaffolded by robotics in preschool: results from the botSTEM project2021In: International journal of technology and design education, ISSN 0957-7572, E-ISSN 1573-1804Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article describes outcomes from the Erasmus+ project botSTEM, involving a theoretical framework for Science, Technology, Engineering & Technology (STEM) and robotics and teaching activities for preschool teachers and teachers educating children four-eight years old. Spanish and Swedish preschool teachers’ self-efficacy and views of teaching STEM and robotics are presented, using a mixed methodology based on a questionnaire and focus group interviews. The three-year long project has improved the preschool teachers’ self-efficacy in STEM and robotics teaching, as described in a questionnaire answered by the preschool teachers after the project. Possibilities in STEM and robotics teaching experienced by them include an increase in children’s agency, knowledge and interest, and the obstacles are mainly structural or technical. Robotics teaching also supports children with special needs when interacting with peers. The results from the botSTEM project point to the benefit of supported long-term professional development for STEM and robotics teaching in preschools.

    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on a project aiming to extend the current understanding of how emerging technologies, i.e. tablets, can be used in preschools to support collaborative learning of real-life science phenomena. The potential of tablets to support collaborative inquiry-based science learning and reflective thinking in preschool is investigated through the analysis of teacher-led activities on science, including children making timelapse photography and Slowmation movies. A qualitative analysis of verbal communication during different learning contexts gives rise to a number of categories that distinguish and identify different themes of the discussion. In this study, groups of children work with phase changes of water. We report enhanced and focused reasoning about this science phenomenon in situations where timelapse movies are used to stimulate recall. Furthermore, we show that children communicate in a more advanced manner about the phenomenon, and they focus more readily on problem solving when active in experimentation or Slowmation producing contexts.

Different ways of handling learning objects in science when pre-school children and their teachers are visiting nature2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to contribute to knowledge about pre-school teachers´ qualitative different ways of handling a learning object in science when children 4-5 years old are visiting nature. Learning is here seen as a change in the learners’ possibility to experience the world in a certain way and it takes place everywhere. It can be both planned and unplanned. The framework used, variation theory, states for learning to occur, critical aspects of the learning object have to be simultaneously discerned and focused on. The learning object is seen as a capability and it can be defined by its critical features. When playing and interacting with others, a space of variation is constituted that decides what is possible to learn concerning a delimited learning object. When teachers make differences in the children’s´ earlier experiences visible it may contribute to, critical aspects that the learner has not been previously able to discern becomes visible. The data is collected by video observations (20 hours). A group of children and their teachers were videotaped during their stay in nature (a total of 9 days). The research builds on ordinary preschool activities and is not an experiment designed by the researcher. A qualitative analysis seeks to discern how teachers can maintain children’s interest of the phenomena and contribute to develop the children´s knowledge. All parents were informed and had to give their written permission for the children to take part in the research. Every time when starting the video recording the children were asked if it was OK to observe them and they were informed it was freely for them to stop the recording whenever they wanted. The teachers were informed they also had permission to stop the observation whenever they wanted. All participants were guaranteed preservation of anonymity. Three qualitatively different ways of dealing with a learning object is found. In the presentation possible reasons for the teachers´ different ways of handling the learning object will be discussed. Implication for practice is to show the teacher´s role in children’s learning of science. The curriculum points out science learning as an important question for pre-school teacher to handle, but teachers often lack a strategy for this mission.

Learning in pre-school – building on variation2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe qualitatively different ways in which teachers offer children (aged 4-5) to learn about phenomena in nature when visiting nature. The empirical data consist of video observations of children and teachers communicating with one another.

Variation theory is presented as a framework for analysing the data. The theory assumes that variation is needed to support learning. However, the variation is not in methods but in variation of critical aspects needed to understand the object of learning. This means that how the specific content of learning is dealt with has effect on student learning. The object of learning can be differentiated in three types, the intended object of learning, the enacted object of learning and the lived object of learning. In this study the interest is about the enacted object of learning, i.e. what it was possible for the students to learn.

The study identifies two qualitatively different ways to present the object of learning to the students. One way is based on the principle of opening up dimensions of variation and the second way is built on presumed shared previous experience as a resource for making sense of a novel observation.

The implication of the different approaches for children´s learning is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish school system offers curriculum-based early childhood education (ECE) organised as preschool (for 0–5-year-olds) and preschool class (for 6-year-olds). The intention to create a playful and educational environment based on children’s perspectives, interests, and questions is strongly based on historical and cultural traditions. This article develops knowledge of ECE teachers’ approaches to science-learning situations. The study applies a phenomenographic approach. The analysis is based on approximately 9.5 hours of video documentation of teacher-led and child-initiated Swedish ECE science activities. We identified two descriptive categories and four subcategories dealing with science-learning situations: (A) making anything visible, containing the three subcategories (Aa) addressing everyone, (Ab) addressing everything, and (Ac) addressing play and fantasy; and (B) creating a shared space for learning (Ba) addressing common content. These categories are related to how efforts to take advantage of children’s perspectives are interpreted and addressed in educational practice. The article discusses and exemplifies the use of various categories and their potential implications for ECE learning practice.

    Abstract [en]

This empirical study analyses the qualitatively different ways in which teachers approach children’s learning in and about nature. The empirical data consists of video observations of children and teachers communicating with one another around natural phenomena found during excursions into a forest. Variation theory is presented as a framework for analysing the opportunities teachers provide for children’s learning. The study identifies three qualitatively different ways in which teachers communicate with children: one based on the principle of opening up dimensions of variation, the second building on presumed shared previous experience as a resource for making sense of a novel observation and the third involving children through using a make-believe playful approach. The implications of these three different approaches for children’s learning are discussed.

Education for sustainability in Early Childhood Teacher Education (ECTE)2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Early Childhood teacher education (ECTE) in Sweden is a 3½ year long education on an academic level. In Sweden the Parliament and government have overall responsibility for higher education. They decide on which rules are to apply to higher education and they also set out goals and guidelines. However universities have a great freedom of movement within the regulatory framework set out. They are e.g. free to decide how to organise their studies. The aim of the study presented here is to discuss how students answer on a survey concerning education for sustainability. In the first and fourth semester the ECTE students at Kristianstad University are particularly directed to learning about sustainability and education for sustainability. Critical aspects of sustainability and education for sustainability are pointed out by the teachers and by the textbooks. The survey will give answer to questions about what aspects of sustainability the students had discerned in the fifth semester. The first results of the survey indicates that the students’ experience is that the ECTE had developed their knowledge about sustainability although we can see there still are aspects that are not yet discerned. This indicates the importance of problematizing sustainability from a didactic perspective in relation to ECTE.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the research project is to analyze and describe how pre-school teachers during an in-service training period develop theoretical knowledge about focusing the content when planning for teaching science in pre-school. The variation theory is used for analysis as well as for the planning for teaching in pre-school. The theory can be described in terms of learning object, critical aspects, discernment, simultaneity and differences. 30 pre-school teachers from nine different municipalities participated in the project. The empirical material consists of a questionnaire as the preschool teachers answered in the beginning and in the end of the training period and of group reports. The results can be discussed as a number of critical aspects in relation to teachers'learning as: ways of understand the concept of variation, to discern the object of learning and to discern o shared space of learning.

    Abstract [sv]

Book talks as an approach to nature of science teaching in early childhood education2020In: International Journal of Science Education, ISSN 0950-0693, E-ISSN 1464-5289, Vol. 42, no 12, p. 2095-2111Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on the need for increased attention to content issues and working methods for science teaching in Early Childhood Education (ECE). Science education research emphasises the importance of not only focusing on specific phenomena, but also on the Nature of Science (NOS). NOS teaching deals with questions about what science is, how scientific knowledge is developed and in what ways humans are involved in these processes. An inclusion of such issues is important if common stereotypical images of science and scientists are to be challenged. Previous research has suggested that NOS can be taught through book talks connected to trade books. However, there is a lack of empirical studies at the ECE level supporting this suggestion. Thus, this article reports from the first part of a project in which researchers and teachers explored book talks as a possibility to introduce NOS in early years science (children between 1 and 5 years old). Data consists of book talks (N=48) around two picture trade books led by five preschool teachers preceded by a teacher-researcher workshop on NOS and NOS teaching. The results show that discussions on a variety of NOS issues is possible in an ECE context. These results are discussed in relation to previous literature on both NOS teaching and science in the early years.

Introducing nature of science in early childhood education: results from a project in collaboration with teachers2021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We report from a project performed in collaboration between researchers and early childhood education (ECE) teachers. The idea of the project was to introduce ‘nature of science’ (NOS) in the ECE setting through using book-talks connected to trade books (narratives as well as expository books). Much research on NOS teaching has been done, but very scarcely targeting the youngest children. The empirical data in this project consists of audio recordings of book-talks (N=152) with children aged 2-6 led by five teachers, audio recordings of focus groups and workshops (N=9) with the teachers, documentation of children’s drawings as well as of artefacts used by the preschool teachers. The results show that discussions about a variety of NOS issues are possible in an ECE context. It also shows that attention can be directed towards NOS during book talks regardless of genre or if the books contain explicit NOS references or not. However, book-talks connected to books without explicit NOS references require that the teacher finds other ways to direct attention towards NOS.  The teachers involved in this project managed to do this with only a short introduction to NOS. This shows that book-talks has great potential as an approach to introducing NOS to the youngest children. The results further showed that the teachers experienced that the NOS book-talks had spin off-effects such as increased curiosity, new questions, and engagement in investigations among the children. These results point to the potential for NOS teaching to contribute to empowerment and agency for the children, and positions NOS as an important part of science in ECE that values democracy and social justice as central. Building on the results, we present a didactical model that can support teachers when introducing NOS to young children.

Nature of science in early years science teaching2021In: European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, ISSN 1350-293X, E-ISSN 1752-1807, p. 1-13Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The research field of science education has gathered questions about what science is, how scientific knowledge is developed and in what ways humans are involved in these processes under the umbrella concept ‘nature of science’ (NOS). Previous research has suggested that teaching ought to focus much more on these issues, but so far the focus has been on older children and students, while there is a lack of research on NOS teaching for the youngest children (up to six years). In this conceptual article,we suggest that NOS should be taught from the outset, and thus be part of science teaching in the early years. We put forward arguments as to why this early introduction coupled to the overall values and aims of democracy and social justice is important, and elaborate on the kind of NOS issues that could be included in science teaching aimed at the youngest children.
