Social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility in team sport clubs: two cases from Sweden and Finland2019In: Sport entrepreneurship and public policy: building a new approach to policy-making for sport / [ed] Vanessa Ratten, Cham: Springer, 2019, p. 7-21Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Small and large sport clubs, in big cities or in the countryside, need to respond to external pressures created by social, financial and environmental factors. These pressures may come from the commercial environment, communities, national governing bodies, or political stakeholders. This chapter introduces the reader to the current pressures faced by Nordic sport clubs and the entrepreneurs’ role in the clubs’ development through the lens of entrepreneurship, and especially social entrepreneurship. This chapter addresses the role of the entrepreneur in relation to the triple bottom line of corporate social responsibility (CSR)—economy, environment, and society—in the context of Finnish and Swedish team sport clubs by using two football clubs as examples.

Increased realism in eyewitness confidence judgments: The effect of dyadic collaboration2003In: Applied Cognitive Psychology, ISSN 0888-4080, E-ISSN 1099-0720, Vol. 17, no 5, p. 545-561Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigated to what extent, and under what circumstances, pair collaboration influences the realism in eyewitness confidence in event memory. The participants first saw a short film clip and then confidence rated their answers to questions on its content. A condition (the Individual–Pair condition) where individual effort preceded pair collaboration showed better calibration compared with a condition (the Simple Pair condition) where no individual effort took place. Furthermore, within the Individual–Pair condition, better calibration, and lower overconfidence, were found in the pair phase compared with the individual phase. The eyewitnesses in the Individual–Pair condition made more realistic judgements of the total number of questions answered correctly. In a control experiment no effect on realism in confidence was found when individuals performed the same task twice. The improved realism in the Individual–Pair condition may partly be explained in terms of the increased accuracy and lowered confidence found for such items where the pair members’ had given different answers in the individual phase, and by a risky shift effect for such items where they had given the same answer.

Actor-Observer differences in realism in confidence and frequency judgments2004In: Acta Psychologica, ISSN 0001-6918, E-ISSN 1873-6297, Vol. 117, no 3, p. 251-274Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Taking a social psychological approach to metacognitive judgments, this study analyzed the difference in realism (validity) in confidence and frequency judgments (i.e., estimates of overall accuracy) between one’s own and another person’s answers to general knowledge questions. Experiment 1 showed that when judging their own answers, compared with another’s answers, the participants exhibited higher overconfidence, better ability to discriminate correct from incorrect answers, lower accuracy, and lower confidence. However, the overconfidence effect could be attributable to the lowest level of confidence. Furthermore, when heeding additional information about another’s answers the participants showed higher confidence and better discrimination ability. The overconfidence effect of Experiment 1 was not found in Experiment 2. However, the results of Experiment 2 were consistent with Experiment 1 in terms of discrimination ability, confidence, and accuracy. Finally, in both experiments the participants gave lower frequency judgments of their own overall accuracy compared with their frequency judgments of another person’s overall accuracy.

Hiv - En förstummande sjukdom?: socionomstudenters och socialsekreterares attityder till hiv-positiva2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine social workers' and social work students' attitudes towards people living with hiv in Sweden. I will also examine if there is a connection between knowledge and attitudes. The questions at issue are how social workers' and social work students' attitudes can assume to influence on their professional practice and what causes can affect their attitudes towards people living with hiv. The study is based on a qualitative method. The methods have been: conversational interviews with five social workers, who work with family issues and integration, and a focused group interview with four social work students. Both forms of interviews were combined with the vignette method. The theoretical framework of this study is symbolic interactionism.

The result of the study indicates that both the social work students and the social workers lack adequate knowledge about hiv, however, the respondents are capable of reflecting and are able to put themselves into others' situations and therefore they will not discriminate their clients because of their disease. Results of the study also indicate that there is a great ambiguity among all of the respondents because of the lack of knowledge and adequate education.

CSR in aid organizations: facing scandals and criticism2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a term that is developing and becoming more relevantover the years. The increased demand among consumers is driving organizations to be moresocially responsible and involved in environmental and social issues. Moreover, since aidorganizations implement CSR in their everyday work, this study will include how aidorganizations use CSR to achieve their social mission. What is more relevant for this study ishow scandals and critique are faced in aid organizations and how CSR can be used in order toregain a respectful position. Therefore, the research question for this dissertation is “How canCSR be used when facing scandals and critique in aid organizations?”

In order to answer our question, a qualitative method will be conducted. Interviews with fourdifferent aid organizations will be used as the method of our data collection, in order todiscover different aspects of working with CSR.

The results of our research is that critique occurs, since the social attitude among individualsis changing. The difficulty of separating aid organizations from each other is a fact, whichindicates an inefficient knowledge and awareness among society. A scandal that occurs in oneaid organization, affects the other aid organizations trustworthiness within the same market. Moreover, the brand suffers and CSR is therefore used when rebranding and wining backsocieties trust.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how violence in close relationship in seven cases of gross violation of women's rights can be understood from Messerschmidt's theory on construction of masculinity and criminality. The purpose of this study is to examine the explanations for the violence in the cases as well as how the perpetrators describes the victim’s role in the violence. The problem statements in this study are 1) What does the working situation look like for the woman and man in the analysed cases? 2) How are the violence explained in the cases and how does the perpetrators describe the women's part in the violence? and 3) How can these explanations be understood from Messerschmidt's theory on masculinity and crime? The used method is a qualitative content analysis. The results show that the perpetrators unemployment has an effect, though not a causal relationship, on the occurring of the violence. Three themes emerged from the analysis that showed that control, jealousy and authority are central when describing the violence. It also emerged that the perpetrators tried to place the blame on the victim by describing how she provoked him to violence. Conclusions of this study are that the analysed descriptions can be understood and explained through the construction of masculinity and the violence mainly occurred when the masculine identity was perceived as being questioned by the victim.

Hyllad, ratad eller anonym: en studie om svenska konsumenters attityder till opastöriserad mjölk2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, all milk needs to be pasteurized. Unpasteurized milk [ OPM ] may only be sold in a smaller scale directly from the farmer to the consumer. The law was introduced in 1939, to prevent tuberculosis, which poses no threat today. There are other reasons, such as keepability and risk of pathogenic bacteria, why milk is pasteurized. Despite these risks, many consume OPM. The Swedish food agency proposed 2013 a new law to prohibit all sales of OPM. This proposal received numerous opinions from proponents of OPM. There is limited research on Swedish consumers' attitudes and values regarding OPM. Praised, rejected or anonymous: a study of Swedish consumers' attitudes on unpasteurised milk is a bachelor thesis in food and meal science, Kristianstad University. The study was carried out with a questionnaire designed to explore the attitudes to OPM of Swedish milk consumers, and what they are based on. The results showed that the consumers attitudes about OPM was connected to a higher value. Amongst others, the attitudes were more critical and OPM was seen as a risky product. Most of the consumers oponions were based on childhood, memories and social connections. Despite OPMs higher values, the study shows that due to precationary OPM may not be ready to emerge in this caution and health conscious society Sweden is today.

”Jaha, då har jag blivit vegetarian”: Tonåringars ändrade kostval ur ett föräldraperspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction Sweden has a strong tradition regarding meat, as it has been the most important part of a meal. At the same time, the population of young people choosing to remove meat from their diet has increased in later years. But, when a young person that still lives with their family makes this choice, it not only affects their own life but also the whole family, especially the parents. Purpose To analyze how a teenager’s vegetarian food choice affected the family meal process and how the parents experienced the possible changes. Background The research background used for the study was food culture and communication, foods, as well as nutrition and health - why do we eat as we do, what is included in the meal process, and how do our choices affect our wellbeing? Material and method Semi-structured interviews in group and by phone with qualitative content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman. Results The parents expressed the same initial concern for their children's nutrition and their own ignorance when it comes to vegetarian food. At the same time, they felt their responsibility and made sure to help the children solve it by finding out more for themselves. Although the families previously had similar meal patterns, there was a difference regarding how extensive the changes were. The parents experienced that their teenagers became more involved and better at cooking. Conclusion Based on current research, this study shows that extensive change in diet choices can affect several factors in the family meal process, but also that more research on the subject must be done to get better understanding.

Design for co-creation with interactive montage2011In: Proceedings, 4th Nordic Design Research Conference, Nordes2011, School of Art and Design, Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland
May 29th - June 1st, 2011: Making Design Matter / [ed] Jung-Joo Lee, School of Art and Design, Aalto University, 2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Montage in cinema means to mount images andsounds from different sources, that are interpreted together and whose oppositions drive the storyfurther. In this paper we develop the montage concept further for co-creation in interactive, tactile, spatial cross-media. As case we use the design of the interactive, tangible, cross-media installation ORFI. ORFI is developed to facilitate collaboration and co-creation between children with severe disabilities and their care persons. In this paper we focus on how we have designed for interactive montage. We present two main types of interactive montage, close and shifted in three dimensions (spatial, temporal and actorial). With the first we mean spatial and temporal closeness, depending on the roles users take and the interpretations they make. With shifted we mean how to use spatial and temporal shifting and distance between the media elements in space and over time, depending on the users’ roles and interpretations. All this to encourage co-creation over time, between a variety of users in different situations.

From designing objects to designing fields: from control to freedom2003In: Digital Creativity, ISSN 1462-6268, E-ISSN 1744-3806, Vol. 14, no 2, p. 74-90Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we want to explore Field as a concept and as a metaphor for understanding interactive systems. By interactive systems we mean both systems and artworks, where the user by interacting changes the course of events. We intend to show why we need new terms and why we consider Field to be a fruitful concept and term. Further we will show how the Field concept changes both our understanding of what we do as designers and composers and how we acknowledge our audience. We will exemplify the design consequences of the Field concept by going through some design considerations we made when designing the audio tactile installation Mufi.

Om trygghet och övervakningssystem: Enkätstudie om medborgares attityder till kamera- och IT-baserad övervakning2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Images of antiracism and the crisis of white patriarchy in Swedish primary school textbooks2021In: Textbooks and Educational Media: Perspectives from Subject Education: Proceedings of the 13th IARTEM Conference 2015, Berlin / [ed] Péter Bagoly-Simó & Zuzana Sikorová, Cham: Springer Nature Switzerland AG , 2021, p. 101-118Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter starts with a textbook evaluation that was originally carried out by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate in 2010, focusing on fundamental values in chemistry textbooks used in 14 primary schools (students aged 10–11 years). The aim is to discuss the results of this analysis in relation to national values and a national (Swedish) self-image, with respect to certain patterns and perceptions that were discernible in the textbook material, showing some cultural identities and discourses. In addition, parts of the material that were not included in the official report are presented in this chapter. The method used is eclectically used discourse analysis carried out within the fields of critical race and whiteness studies, as well as in relation to worldwide social changes, sometimes referred to as the crisis of multiculturalism, or the end of patriarchy. The first image to be identified in the textbook material, that was the foundation of the evaluation, is a so called reverse gender hierarchy, where men tend to be subordinated, whereas the second image is an imbedded white structure in the textbooks.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Santa Maria is part of the Finnish food Company, Paulig. Santa Maria is the largest actor in the Nordic region of Mexican food (Tex-Mex)and sees its future expansion there Santa Maria has four production sites in Sweden, in Mölndal the spice and taco chips/shell factories and in the south Vadensjö and Landskrona produce Tortillas. Manufacturing Tortillas without preservatives is a challenge which requires advanced ventilation technique and expensive, complicated machinery. For the analysis was chosen a 10” Wheat Tortilla, Santa Marias second largest best seller, and one machine it’s made on.

Manual work on a Tortilla line can be separated into two categories, preventative and corrective. In the preventive errors and faults are corrected before they happen or lead to major stops. The corrective work is bound to alarms, stops or raw material running out and need refilling. By moving one line and merging two sites the management would like the Baker to get more time available for supervision of the line rather than added corrective tasks, the management also wishes to reduce costs tied up in inventory by reducing the amount of time raw material and finished goods stay in stock.

In the report the days in stock (DIS), value stream mapping (VSM) and Spaghetti diagrams are shown during the move and merger. One part of the report is sectioned according to DMAIC.

All analysis was made in parallel to the project without being part of it and the results reflect on this fact. The result was communicated to the management when the merger/move was completed. The value of the work and analysis was to teach parts of the organization the skill of value stream mapping (VSM), Spaghetti diagram and the advantage of working with the DMAIC methodology and show suggestions of improvement.

The report describes that the Trågare(baker) has in fact been given fewer possibilities to supervise and increased corrective work. The production line and the design of the workplace has caused double the movement tasks. Days in stock (DIS) for the product under review have deteriorated slightly after relocation and the value stream mapping (VSM) of the production flow through the production line was unaltered.

Two improvement and one appeal was drafted.

A small program change will reduce visits to the raw material room by 50%. By using a currently empty silo for one manual ingredient several tasks can be eliminated.

Appeal to use VSM and Spaghetti diagrams in future root cause analysis of DIS and project work when trying to find improvements.

Den kommunala måltidsutvecklaren: En studie om en framväxande profession2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Every day, about three million meals are served in the public sector, where Sweden is one of three countries offering a free meal in preschool, school and elderly care. The law states that the meal should be nutritious and it is the meal developer who, together with meal and diet manager, is working with the experience of the meal. As a tool for developing the meals, the FAMM model and the Food Agency's meal model are recommended to use. Over the years, the professional role as meal developer has emerged in the municipality and contributed with work related to the development of public meals. The profession as a meal developer in the municipality is relatively new and can be seen as quite unspecified regarding education, qualifications and tasks. For that reason, it was interesting to investigate the profession more closely.

The aim of this study is to examine the profession as a meal-developer with regard to the content and qualifications of the profession, as well as perceptions and expectations of the professional role of meal developers and diet / meal managers in Scanian municipalities. The aim is followed by four questions about the meal developer, linked to tasks, education, competence and challenges as well as their view on the public meal.

This study is based on four semi-structured interviews with meal developers and a questionnaire answered by diet / meal managers in Region Scanian.

The result of the study showed that the profession as a meal developer was multifaceted with regard to content, qualifications and education, but also tasks and expectations related to the profession. The profession was perceived as relatively self-directed, with different areas of responsibility, depending on the municipality, working methods and what management the meal developer belonged to.

There are perceptions and expectations that the meal developer should have a broad knowledge of the meal area. There were both pros and cons noticed of working in a politically controlled organization. The meal developers work with the meal from a broad perspective and believe that the meal is important for the society in terms of sustainability and health.

What drives climate action in Canada’s Provincial North? Exploring the role of connectedness to nature, climate worry, and talking with friends and family2021In: Climate, E-ISSN 2225-1154, Vol. 9, no 10, p. 1-19, article id 146Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Despite widespread calls to action from the scientific community and beyond, a concerning climate action gap exists. This paper aims to enhance our understanding of the role of connectedness to nature in promoting individual-level climate action in a unique setting where climate research and action are lacking: Canada’s Provincial North. To begin to understand possible pathways, we also examined whether climate worry and talking about climate change with family and friends mediate the relationship between connectedness to nature and climate action. We used data collected via postal surveys in two Provincial North communities, Thunder Bay (Ontario), and Prince George (British Columbia) (n = 628). Results show that connectedness to nature has a direct positive association with individual-level climate action, controlling for gender and education. Results of parallel mediation analyses further show that connectedness to nature is indirectly associated with individual-level climate action, mediated by both climate worry and talking about climate change with family and friends. Finally, results suggest that climate worry and talking about climate change with family and friends serially mediate the relationship between connectedness to nature and with individual-level climate action. These findings are relevant for climate change engagement and action, especially across Canada’s Provincial North, but also in similar settings characterized by marginalization, heightened vulnerability to climate change, urban islands within vast rural and remote landscapes, and economies and social identities tied to resource extraction. Drawing on these findings, we argue that cultivating stronger connections with nature in the places where people live, learn, work, and play is an important and currently underutilized leverage point for promoting individual-level climate action. This study therefore adds to the current and increasingly relevant calls for (re-)connecting with nature that have been made by others across a range of disciplinary and sectoral divides.

Preschool Staff perception of the pedagogical meal: A mixed methods study of the pedagogical work with meals in Swedish preschools from 2005 to 20202020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Meals in Swedish preschools has undergone change between 2005 and 2020 regarding meals as important pedagogical tools. Due to new guidelines for conducting preschool meals presented by the Swedish Food Agency an increased focus has been placed on pedagogy during the meals to help develop the minds of young children. Previous research has shown that preschool staff had little to no education on food and meal or how to conduct pedagogical meals. To understand how the preschool staff, perceive the pedagogical meal and how it has changed over time, a convergent mixed method with a survey and interviews was used. The results showed that the staff does not have formal education on food, meal and how to conduct pedagogical meals, but instead rely on peer learning. They perceive themselves as role models in forming a positive relationship with the social and nutritional aspects of food and meal. While their job has many positive aspects, they face challenges with stress and increasing child groups. As the role of preschool staff has changed, from making sure children eat, to socially participating in the meal, the guidelines have changed alongside the role.

Åldrande i ett mångkulturellt samhälle: En kvalitativ studie av äldre invandrares tillgång till samhällsinformation och deras deltagande i aktiviteter riktade till äldre medborgare.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In light of the European Union`s 2012 theme year: Active aging and solidarity between generations I wished to gain an understanding of weather elderly immigrant are provided with equal possibilities and access to local community information as the majority population and their participation in activities arranged for senior citizens in the municipality where they live. I have done this by meeting with those who work in this capacity. I also chose to meet with representatives for immigrant organizations in the local community to enquire of their work with senior citizens within their own ethnic group. This is a qualitative study on a phenomenological ground based on nine interviews and four observations. I have had two theories to help me analyze my empirical material. Globalization theory is a good groundwork to understanding the changes in modern multicultural societies where I have looked at the work of Anthony Giddens first at hand. The theory of KASAM by Aaron Antonowsky explains how the sense of coherence helps people to remain positive and satisfied in old age despite their failing health and unfavorable circumstances at times. I have found that the municipality where this study is preformed has a multicultural focus in their manor of spreading information. Yet many ethnic groups seek information verbally from friends and family rather than seek it through the official channels which may be more common among the majority population and immigrants that have established themselves in the society. Still all those whom I interviewed agreed that spreading information through direct contact always is the most effective way to get information across to people. I found that the local community meeting places for senior citizens have no immigrants attending on a regular basis. I did meet a group of senior migrant citizens with their origin in various nationalities that gather under the supervision of a cooperation project that has integration and public health as its main goal. All the participants in their activities for senior citizens started coming through personal invitation from the project leader or other group participants. With regards to the theme year those working with senior citizens were aware of it but haven’t had any specific focus on it in their work except for a few that participate in a regional public health project. They all agree that a theme year for active ageing and solidarity is an important milestone to recognizing the needs for recreation and showing respect to those who are beyond the age for retirement.

Våld inom vården: En kvantitativ enkätstudie om neutraliseringen av våld inom vårdyrket2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Children are different and they live under different conditions, but one they have in common - the desire to play. Children's play is important for their health and wellbeing. The aim: was to highlight the knowledge and issues that preschool children's parents have about young children's health and wellbeing, with a focus on physical activity and play, to promote health. A further aim was to highlight the obstacles and opportunities that parents experience regarding physical activity for young children. Material and Methods: The main study two focus group interviews were used with eight parents of children of preschool age. The interview texts were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in two main categories and three sub-categories. Main categories were: “children's health and well being - different things” and “find the balance to promote health and wellbeing". Subcategories were: "a balance between different environments and arenas”,  "balance between freedom and organized activity and rest" and “the balance between different responsibilities ". Conclusion: The parents expressed that much were about "balance". The study highlights the parents constant "struggle" between the various demands and responsibilities and to keep daily life together with all the demands. To assist / advise parents to find a balance in everyday life could be seen as a health promotion and preventive intervention for childrens health.

Tårar i regn: En narrativ analys av ungdomars texter2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the Swedish Quality Handbook Project is to help Swedish libraries in all parts of the public sector to start conducting systematic quality management, by utilizing performance indicators. The project is intended to serve as a springboard for libraries interested in engaging in quality development. The cooperation is based on the collection of data for the twelve indicators over a period of three years and a comparison of the results over time and with those of other libraries. The most important outcome from the project is that it has led 50 Swedish libraries to start performing systematic quality management. The project is run by The Special Interest Group for Quality Management and Statistics within the Swedish Library Association, which plays an active role in encouraging Swedish libraries to engage in quality development and evaluation.

Perceptions of challenges affecting research ethics committees’ members at medical and health science colleges in Omani and Jordanian Universities2021In: Journal of Academic Ethics, ISSN 1570-1727, p. 1-15Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years there has been an increase in research conducted in the Middle East, with a corresponding increase in the challenges faced by members of the Research Ethics Committees (RECs). This study compares the structures of Omani and Jordanian RECs and investigates the perceptions of the challenges affecting the work of the REC members in Oman and Jordan. A convenience sample of 34 Omani and 66 Jordanian participants from 21 universities was recruited in this cross-sectional study. Almost 70% disagreed that the members of RECs are unqualified, providing comments without justification; half believed that members have limited experience in research, and almost three-quarters that they have different opinions regarding some ethical issues. No significant differences were found between Omani and Jordanian REC members regarding their perception of the challenges, except for the perception that reviewing proposals is a time-consuming task (p = 0.048) and that multi-REC centres are less available (p = 0.026). The regression model showed that there were significantly more male members of Jordanian RECs, and that Jordanian members were less likely to receive formal training. In conclusion, the current structure of RECs and the challenges faced by members need to be re-evaluated by decision makers to improve the overall quality of research activities, and to ensure that current REC members’ practices adhere to international standards.

Student engagement in hybrid taught large introduction courses during COVID-192021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

To build student engagement and belonging early in the education is crucial for retention and student success. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, universities worldwide were forced to seek for alternative and complementary teaching approaches. In Sweden, universities adopted hybrid teaching since the end of the spring in 2020. The traditional face-to-face teaching facilitates immediate, real-time engagement with activities such as discussion and instant interaction between instructors and students and/or among students which encourages active learning, while an online teaching allows the students to watch videos and read requested materials many times, to complete the assignments at their suitable time and place, to enable good discussion and interaction via online forum and messaging. A hybrid approach combines the advantages of both face-to-face and online approaches. Research shows several challenges with online teaching, for examples, students´ engagement [1], communication between student(s) and teacher(s) [2], connection with/within the group, study groups, study buddies [3] as well as social engagement [4]. When a hybrid approach is applied to the First-Year courses due to the COVID-19, these challenges might have even more serious implications on the retention and success. This study explores two successful cases of how active learning, togetherness and engagement can be created among First-Year students. The study is based on two large introductory courses for the first-year students in Computer Science and in Business Administration at Kristianstad University, Sweden. Both programmes provide the Introduction courses for larger number of students (135 respective 195 students). Various methods and tools were used in the course design to engage students and create an active learning [5] environment using the hybrid approach. The results and experience were also presented. We experienced that students had actively participated in the arranged activities and the course passing rate was higher compared with the face-to-face teaching. The course evaluation also showed that the students were satisfied with course contents and various course activities.

Övervakning – elektronisk kontroll: en jämförelse av London och Stockholm 2002-20112012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Participatory practice : community-based action for transformative change2009Book (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

Participatory Practice explores the core ideas of participatory practice and how theory and practice can be integrated to achieve transformative change.

The ideas in the book are founded on two premises: firstly, that transformative practice begins in the everyday stories that people tell about their lives and that practical theory generated from these narratives is the best way to inform both policy and practice. Secondly, that participatory practice is a tool for examining this knowledge in that it allows practitioners to examine the way they view the world and to situate their local practice within bigger social issues.

The book  is expected to be of interest to both academics and community-based practitioners.

Professor Springett commented: “Writing the book was a transformative experience in itself because we had to cross the divide between our different professions. The idea to write it came from our joint concern for the appropriation of the language of participation by many politicians and agencies without a real examination of what true participation actually consists of."

Narratives and the semiotic freedom of children2021In: Sign System Studies, ISSN 1406-4243, E-ISSN 1736-7409, Vol. 49, no 1, p. 216-234Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Both adults’ habits-of-thought and their understanding of children’s stories shape how adults interpret children’s participation in conversations. In the light of the requests on children’s rights that follow from the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) this paper stresses the relevance of authorities having semiotically informed knowledge on children’s meaning-making within conversations with adults. In Article 12, the CRC stipulates the right of children to participate in and to be heard about decisions that affect their everyday lives. According to the same Article, however, these rights can be restrained, based on the authority’s judgements of the child’s age and maturity. Sociological studies have highlighted the importance of adopting the child’s perspective in judging matters that concern her. The present paper further suggests that narrow conceptualization of the sign can help one to observe different levels of meaning in adults’ and children’s conversations better. Although Paul Ricoeur did not investigate children’s narratives per se, his theory of narratives and narrativity offers a phenomenological approach to development that allows for better theoretical discriminations of narrative as a semiotic resource, and can thus assist adults in truly listening to children.

Nyhetsmediernas rapportering om mördare: En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av svenska tidningsmedier2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to create a deeper understanding about how male- and female murderers are depicted in the news and to see if there is any difference in the depiction. The focus is to see if there is a pattern between four murderers, two female and two males, and how they are depicted in the media. We also want to see if there is a difference between male and female murderers who committed similar crimes. Previous research shows that there is a difference in how the depiction of male and female murderers. Female offenders are more often befouled then their male counterpart. To examine how the media depict the murderers this study originates from a qualitative content analysis. The material that we base our study on is 40 Swedish articles from different media, ten articles on each murderer from different newspapers. The results we found were that the female murderers are portrayed by media by their crime and norm-breaking behavior. The male murderers are portrayed only after their crime. The conclusion is that we can see a pattern in how media depict male and female murderers and that there is a differs in-between male and female murderers. Swedish newspapers tend to describe female murderers in a more complex way by depicting their crimes and norm braking behavior which leads to a bigger focus and more articles revolving female murderers in the news then male murderers.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay focuses on how trafficking in human beings for sexual exploitation is defined and dealt with in the Nordic countries. Agreements on how trafficking for sexual exploitations should be dealt with is presented in reports and Action plans from the European Union and United nations amongst others. In this essay we will compare four national Action plans made by governments by Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway between 2005- 2011 to each other. Mainly we have been looking at similarities and differences in the different Action plans. The essay is based on Discourse theory and discursive struggle and we have been looking at similarities and differences in how trafficking is dealt with through language. The result shows that there are signs of hegemony in how the phenomenon “trafficking” is dealt with in the Nordic countries. All countries that we have studied see trafficking for sexual exploitation as a huge international and national issue and it is a global issue that has to be dealt with. Even if there´s a great deal of hegemony in the Action plans we have studied we have also seen that different meanings in the interventions makes the trafficking discourse antagonistic and contested. Finally we have discussed how the laws of prostitution have come to affect the countries differences in actions in trafficking for sexual exploitations.

”Jag känner mig svensk när jag äter svenskt”: En kvalitativ studie om migrerande barns upplevelser i mötet med en ny matkultur2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Nature reserves are the most common type of protected landscape designation in Sweden. Many of theise landscapes are protected as nature reserves based on the distribution of specific species. Further, some nature reserves have more visitors than others. These differense lead to interesting qestions. For example, what makes a nature reserve a popular destination? This question is at the base of this researchreport, based on a research in two Swedish nature reserves, Skurugata and Stuverydsbäcken, in Eksjö municipality, Jönköpings province. Visitors at these sites have been counted and many of the visitors have answeed questions about what motivates them to make a visit in the reserve. Also questions about how they travelled to the nature reserve and how they obtained information about the place wereas answered. The result of an analysis of this data shows that Skurugata has more visitors. The result of the questions shows that the motivations and visitor preferences areis not, however, very different. Most of the visitors of both sites reported enjoying being in the nature and and seeing specific features of the particular reserves (canyons). The key difference noted from the survey results was that many visitors to Skurugata did not have any knowledge about Stuverydsbäcken at all, while most of the visitors in Stuverydsbäcken had a knowledge about Skurugata. These similarities and differences are discussed.

How are health and sustainability adressed in studies of public meals?2021In: Sustainable development goals in food systems - challenges and opportunities for the future / [ed] Margarida Vieira, Paola Pittia, Cristina L.M. Silva, Florence Dubois-Brissonnet, Rui Costa Foteini Chrysanthopoulou, Wien: ISEKI-Food Association , 2021, p. 199-199, article id 322Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The world is facing a number of challenges related to food consumption. Food conduces to far-reaching health effects as well as environmental impact. System changes are needed tomeet a sustainable, healthy food production and consumption. Public and institutional mealsplay a vital role in promoting health and sustainability. In many countries public meals, in this study defined as meals taking place in institutional settings, constitutes a substantial part offood consumption, and may exert a a normative influence on peoples’ food habits. The aimof this study was to exploratively review how, and if, health and sustainability are addressedin the European scientific literature dealing with public meals. Of >3000 papers, 20 werefound to satisfy the criteria and included in the review. The results showed that schools andhospitals are the most dominant arenas where both health and sustainability have beenaddressed. Three different approaches in combining health and sustainability. In the first“Health as embracing sustainability” health is the point of departure and sustainability isincluded as part of health. This is emphasized in relation to health promotion initiatives andhow these could also be more sustainable, claiming that health should embrace both aspects. In the second, “Sustainability as embracing health” sustainability is in focus and health is seenas part of sustainability. This was for example illustrated when focusing on sustainable foodprocurement which is then also motivated by better nutrition in terms of knowing where thefood comes from and how it is produced. Last, for “Health and sustainability as separateconcepts” the link between heath and sustainability was unspecified or undefined. This couldbe exemplified by the stated, but not inter linked or combined, role of the school meal totackle societal challenges related to health and sustainability. In general, a clear motivationfor addressing both health and sustainability is most often missing. This indicates a need formore research within all public meal arenas regarding issues of health and sustainability, forexample in order to provide a more comprehensive foundation for decision-making.

”Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t”: a study on crime workers’ experience with multi-agency cooperation and information exchange in Sweden2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Multi-agency cooperation has been considered a very important aspect of crime investigation and crime prevention in modern time. The aim of this study was to explore the realities of multi-agency cooperation as experienced by Swedish crime workers from the police, the Prison and Probation Service and the Social Service. Previous research has shown that inter-agency cooperation’s success and/or failure is controlled by factors such as time, resources, amount of guidance and so on, however very little research has explored the modern Swedish crime workers’ perspective in the subject. Semi-structured interviews were conducted regarding the topics of cooperation between agencies, information exchange and secrecy. The results showed that while cooperation within the Swedish Judicial System was operating well, collaborative efforts with external agencies like the Social Service, was severely lacking. Collaborative efforts were experienced as less actual cooperation and more information exchange, which in turn was heavily controlled by secrecy laws and therefore often seen as one-way communication with external agencies. Additionally, when well-planned collaborative projects funded by the government are in place, the cooperation tends to work easier, however workers are less inclined to prioritize such efforts when the agencies’ own resources are being used.

Måltidspedagogik: mat- och måltidskunskap i förskolan2013Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Food as a tool for learning in everyday activities at preschool: an exploratory study from Sweden2016In: Food & Nutrition Research, ISSN 1654-6628, E-ISSN 1654-661X, Vol. 60, no 1, article id 32603Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: There is a need for research both in relation to food education at preschools and in relation to how the individual teacher can handle and relate to the many different scientific facts and paradigms that are prevalent in relation to food, health, and a sustainable lifestyle.

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the experiences and meanings that preschool teachers associate with involving food as a tool for learning in planned educational activities.

Design: An exploratory study was conducted in 14 preschools with 131 teachers. Twenty semi-structured individual or group interviews with 45 preschool staff were conducted, and 10 interviews were selected for analysis.

Results: According to participants, both children and teachers developed a sensory language; children became more positive towards tasting and teachers discovered new possibilities for interdisciplinary work. However, the results also show that an allowing system, with both an interested and confident teacher who recognises the competent child and a supportive organisation, is needed in order to make food a meaningful tool for learning in preschool.

Discussion: According to previous studies, food has the potential to play an important part in everyday activities at preschool, both in planned educational activities as well as at meal situations. Our results imply that a holistic understanding of food in preschool is required for long-term work with food as a natural part of the everyday activities.

Conclusion: The results imply that it is fun and meaningful for both children and teachers, and quite possible, to work with food as a tool for learning in everyday activities at preschool. In order to include food as a way to work with the preschool curriculum for a sustainable lifestyle, an allowing system is needed.

Emotioner i domstol: en studie om känslors betydelse vid sexualbrottsdomar2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Matematikångest: En empirisk studie utifrån ett elevperspektiv2021Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]
