The nurse's experience in communicating with patients from other cultures (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Immigration to Sweden has increased in recent years. The nurse will therefore encounter many patients from different cultures. It is important to provide an equal and proper care to the patient no matter what culture he/she comes from. Good communication is the key factor in making patients more involved in their care. Aim: To highlighting nurses' experience in communicating with patients coming from another culture related to hospital care. Method: A general literature study was performed with search engines such as PubMed, Cinahl och Psycinfo. Results: Four categories were formed: linguistic barriers, interpreting, cultural differences, education and development. Discussion: The nurses felt that they had difficulties communicating with these patients and that cultural differences could affect their assessments. They tried to make use of professional interpreters to facilitate information exchange. Due to the fact that it was difficult to get hold of professional interpreters, they sometimes used family members as interpreters. Conclusion: It is therefore important to prepare health workers in these challenges. The availability of an interpreter and education of health personal will lead to a better care and increases patients safety.
