Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: I Sverige insjuknar årligen ca 30 000 personer i stroke.

Abstract [en]

Background: Approximately 30 000 people in Sweden are diagnosed with stroke every year. Due to emergency care measures mortality and stroke related severe disability have declined. Relatives, especially those living near to stroke survivors are important factors in rehabilitation and need more attention from the health care service. Aim: To identify the families´ need of support when relatives are diagnosed with stroke. Method: Research review based on 17 scientific studies. Results: Family members felt that their need of support was not met to the desired extent. Lack of information, education and care co-ordination was highlighted by the relatives. They felt taken for granted and yet still felt no involvement in the care of the stroke victim. Relatives wanted to be seen and be provided with personal emotional support. Discussion: Three findings are emphasized: firstly lack of information to the relatives, secondly the relatives´ need of emotional support in order to attain physical and psychological well-being and thirdly the relatives´ need for participation. Conclusion: Relatives have a great need for support, which should be appreciated nurses and other professionals.
