Communication between the patients with Asperger's Syndrome and the nurse (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The syndrome is characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication, mostly nonverbal. It has been shown that genetic factors are important and that brain injury may be an underlying cause of Asperser’s syndrome. Therefore they often fall outside of social contexts. Due to the low prevalence, the staff of the health-care has limited knowledge about meeting with people who have AS. The communication problems which is seen in AS may cause difficulties in their meeting with the health system. Purpose: To investigate what factors the nurse should take into account to create a communication in conversation with a patient who has Asperser’s syndrome. Method: The study is a general literature study in which fourteen articles were used. Results: The results showed that social disadvantage is one of the characteristics of AS that the nurse should take into account. Misunderstandings occur relatively easy when people with AS often perceive things very concretely. Integrity of communication between two people, body language and words, may not be linked to people with AS. Conclusion: The nurse should have a clear communication in interactions with patients, especially with patients with AS.
