Bakgrund: I Sverige är det mer än 160 000 personer som insjuknat i demens och hälften av dem har Alzheimers sjukdom, som är den vanligaste demenssjukdomen. När diagnosen Alzheimers sjukdom ställts förändras patientens och anhörigas livssituation. Anhöriga tar på sig ett ökat omvårdnadsansvar och känner en större ängslan och oro för framtiden. Syfte: Att belysa anhörigas upplevelser av att vårda en person med Alzheimers sjukdom. Metod: Studien utfördes som en allmän litteraturstudie och sju vetenskapliga artiklar som motsvarade syftet granskades kritiskt och analyserades. Resultat: Består av fem huvudkategorier med subkategorier. I resultatet framkommer att anhöriga upplever stress, sorg, social isolering, glädje och personlig utveckling. Slutsats: Anhöriga upplever stora förändringar och påfrestningar vid vård av anhörig med Alzheimers sjukdom. Sjuksköterskan måste därför ha förståelse för hur anhöriga upplever sin situation. Ett värdefullt redskap i sjuksköterskans omvårdnadsarbete med familjen är att hon/han skapar sig en bild av hur familjeförhållandena ser ut.

Abstract in English:

Background: In Sweden more than 160 000 people are suffering from dementia and half of them have developed Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common of the dementia diseases. When the diagnose Alzheimer’s disease has been set the life situation changes for the patient and his/her family. The family members take a greater responsibility for the care and feel more anxious about the future. Purpose: To illuminate family member’s experiences to care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease. Method: This study was written as a common literature review and seven scientific articles were critically reviewed and analysed. Result: It consists of five main categories and subcategories. The result enlightens that family members experience stress, sorrow, social isolation, joy and personal growth. Conclusion: The family experience enormous changes and strains. When caring for the family member suffering from Alzheimer’s disease the nurse therefore needs to understand how the family members experience the situation. A valuable tool when the nurse is working with the family is if she/he can get a picture of what the family structure looks like.
