“The criminals have taken possession of the neighborhood” : A study of how the news media highlights crime in four of Sweden’s particularly vulnerable areas (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study is about how the Swedish media highlights crime in four of Sweden's most mentioned vulnerable areas. With the help of three Swedish newspapers, Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet and Expressen, the purpose of this study is to investigate how these illustrate the problem of crime in the problem of crime in four geographically located areas in Sweden; Vivalla, Tensta, Gottsunda and Rosengård. The study also aims to investigate whether it is possible to see that news reporting around these areas can affect society's view of them. A qualitative method, in the form of content analysis, was chosen to get a deeper insight into news articles relevant to the study. The results from selected news articles have been analyzed with previous research and the theories that the study includes, Becker's labelling theory, Wacquant's theory of territorial stigma and McCombs and Shaw's agenda setting theory. The results show that there are mainly reports of gun violence/shootings, crime of violence and explosions in the four vulnerable areas. The news articles are about everything from when the crime is committed to the conviction. We have been able to see that there are reports of social vulnerability and how gang crime has a negative impact in these four areas. It also appears that it’s mainly the police that are mentioned in the news reporting as external actors, but also social services, rescue services and politicians are mentioned to a lesser extent.
