Intensive Intervention in Mathematics in Number Sense : A study of the effects five months after the intervention occurred (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study was to determine whether there are long-lasting effects of an intensive intervention in mathematics with regards to the students' knowledge, confidence in their ability, and attitude towards the subject of mathematics. For background, mathematics is the subject where most students obtain the grade F in, when they are leaving primary school. Four students were observed for this study, two from year 2 and two from year 9, each grade from one of two different schools, and all of whom were identified as needing explicit intervention in mathematics. Initially, detailed tests were administered to assess their knowledge and any misconceptions the students may have had and the reasons behind these perceptions. Once a baseline was established, an intensive intervention program was set. This entailed meeting 3 to 4 times a week for a period of 10 weeks with the goal being to get all of the students to feel that mathematics is both manageable and meaningful. For the grade 2 students the focus was number sense; for the grade 9 students the focus was fractions. There was a formal data collection before, then directly following this intervention and five months after the intervention occurred, the first and third were accompanied by semi-structured interviews with the students. This approach was modeled after the framework of was Sense of Coherence (SOC) by Aaron Antonovsky. The test results and interviews were analyzed with regards to comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness. The results confirmed that intensive mathematics intervention had positive effects on these students' knowledge, confidence in their ability, and attitude towards mathematics. Based on follow-up interviews the effects lasted five months after this intensive intervention occurred and was inclusive of a summer leave. As a result of this intensive intervention, the students gained greater self-confidence as the approach to seeking manageability and meaningfulness extended beyond the formal study of mathematics. Based on the result we believe that intensive intervention is effective for students in mathematical difficulties.
