Nurses' experiences of work-related stress : an interview study (English)
Abstract [en]

Introduction: Stress is common in healthcare. How we perceive and handle a stressful situation may differ from individual to individual. Some may see stress as a challenge, others see stress as a threat. By having a sense of control and feel the meaningfulness of their work, it can lead to a reduction in the perceived work-related stress. Objective:The purpose of this study was to investigate the nurses' experiences of work-related stress. Method: The method used was qualitative in nature. The metod that had been chosen was beacuse the purpose of the study was to investigate the nurses' individual experiences of work-related stress. Result: The result showed that an important part of managing stress in the workplace was to have an understanding boss and sympathetic colleagues who they could talk to and get constructive criticism from. Many nurses experienced stress because of the overcrowding and the lack of control. The nurses felt inadequate when they could not keep up with all the patients. They also lacked opportunities for recovery. The conclusion: Despite the nurses' work-related stress, they enjoyed their workplace because of the good relationship with colleagues. The nurses felt that their colleagues were there to assist when needed. Many thought the boss was a good support and stood up when it was needed. Although the contact with the patients was an important part of being a nurse. The nurses themselves had begun to create a change in order to reduce work-related stress and enhance recovery. Another reason why some nurses could handle the stress could possibly be because they had a higher SOC (sense of coherence).
