Abstract [en]

Fluoride has been identified as a neurotoxin with rising demands for new global prevention strategies. The study has been three-folded with an integrated approach: First, to review scientific literature regarding the use of fluoride and adverse health aspects; second, to examine policies & guidelines for the use of fluoride in Sweden; and, third, to explore the view of fluoride among dental hygienist students in Sweden using a survey of questions. The synopsis mainly agreed to science related to the field of dentistry and oral health, but were surprisingly far away from scientific results in respect to fluoride and adverse health aspects. There were both differences and similarities when comparing the students' awareness with scientific evidence and their knowledge in regard to policies and guidelines. Student knowledge of dental fluorosis was high, while knowledge of scientific evidence of adverse health aspects in relation to fluoride was low. The most important factor found influencing student restrictions with fluoride was if drinking water contained high amounts of fluoride. There was no significant association between students’ level of education and their knowledge of fluoride and adverse health effects. New global prevention strategies are of importance in the development of the dental hygienist education.
